Celebrate Fall At A Harvest Fest BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Pleasant View Communities’ Harvest Fest and Craft Bazaar will be an opportunity for people to come together and celebrate fall, said Aubrey Smith, community engagement coordinator. “We want the residents and staff and their families, as well as the greater community, to come out for a fun day,” she said. The Harvest Fest and Craft Bazaar will be held on Saturday, Nov. 13, at Town Square and in

the Town Square North building on the Pleasant View campus, 544 N. Penryn Road, Manheim. The bazaar will begin at 9 a.m., and the festival will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. “We’re going to have live music from the Knuckle Dusters, who are a bluegrass band,” Smith commented. “We’ll also have live chainsaw carving from Shaun Coppersmith of Copperhead Carvings. He’ll also have some things he’s already carved for sale.” See Harvest pg 5

s an honor student and a Girl Scout who has earned her Gold Award, Ansley Ryan has her feet planted firmly on the ground. But the Manheim teen also has her head in the clouds - just not in the way that phrase is typically used. Ansley, who is a senior at Lancaster Catholic High School, has a passion for astronomy. She attended Advanced Space Academy at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Ala., earlier this year. “I found out about the program through Girl Scouts,” Ansley noted. “I’m really interested in astronomy and astrophysics, and it seemed like a really cool opportunity.” Ansley, who is a founding member of the astronomy club at Lancaster Catholic, said the weeklong

busy in a wide range of clubs and activities at school. She’s president of the Future Medical Leaders of America, is a member of Student Council and is chair of the finance committee of Mini-THON. She also serves as president of the Spanish National Honor Society and the astronomy club. She’s captain of the quiz bowl team, secretary of the National Honor Society and a member of the field hockey team. Outside of school, she’s a Girl Scout who earned her Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can earn, for creating masks during the beginning of the pandemic. “I set a goal of making 1,000 homemade cloth masks,” she stated, noting that she gave away 50 to 100 masks a day to her community. In her admittedly limited spare time, Ansley, the daughter of Tim and Gayle Ryan, loves to read and to bake.

Growing up in Manheim, April Lynn Gibble Downey always knew the town was a special place. Now she’s hoping to share the community’s story with others. Downey, who currently lives outside of Baltimore, has a made a video about Manheim that she hopes to turn into a full-blown series of videos spotlighting towns across the country.

camp provided hands-on opportunities to explore science, technology, engineering and math. “We did a lot of really fun projects,” she recalled, including making a “space suit” for an egg and then launching it 50 feet into the air in a rocket the campers created. While the launch went well, the landing was a different story. “Our rocket landed on this tiny square of sidewalk and completely missed this whole huge field of grass we were trying to land on,” she explained. “Our egg didn’t do well.” The camp offered Ansley an opportunity to meet teens from all over the country while experiencing with what it’s like to be an astronaut. Campers slept in quarters designed to resemble the International Space Station and trained in simulators like those used by NASA. When she’s not getting hands-on astronaut training, Ansley keeps

Sandra Jones and Paul Zenone’s first date in May of 2019 was a little unusual. “Our first date was a community meal,” recalled Zenone. The second date was even more unusual. “Our second date was a hike where we saw people living in homeless camps and under bridges,” he noted. From that beginning, Jones and Zenone have created Providing Hope, an organization that provides clothing and food to the homeless in the Reading area on a weekly basis, with the help of about 20 volunteers.

Partnering to feed the homeless are (from left) Sandra Jones, Paul Zenone, Mike Cherasaro, and Heather Cherasaro.

Zenone and Jones first connected when Jones, who grew up in the Donegal area, saw an ad on Craigslist seeking donations for homeless people in Reading. She reached out to Zenone, who had placed the ad, and the pair began serving the homeless community together. On Sept. 17, 2020, Providing Hope celebrated its second anniversary as an organization. The pair now works with several Lancaster County food stores, including the Grocery Outlet Bargain Markets. Their first partnership was with Justin and Ellie Maenner, who own the Spring Valley Road store, purchasing items at a deep discount. They have

starting at 3:30 p.m. The giveaway includes 15 food items. On Mondays, Providing Hope makes a snack bag run through the city with regular stops. To help homeless Reading residents to know where they can shower or do laundry, Providing Hope has created a flyer in English and Spanish that lists days of the week and locations of services. Now, the couple hopes to provide similar help in Lancaster County, where Jones, who works with autistic children, is already storing some of the clothing bank items she has collected. “At our house we have bins for male and female winter and summer shirts from small to extralarge,” said Jones. “I store plus sizes and kids’ clothes at my parents’ house in Lancaster.” Zenone, who owns a flooring business, added that Readingarea nonprofits now reach out to Providing Hope when they need clothing for a client. Both Jones and Zenone welcome donations of food and clothing and volunteers. Readers who would like to know more about the organization or would like to indicate interest in helping it expand into Lancaster may search for “Providing Hope” on Facebook.

Bazaar Will Offer Something For Everyone BY CATHY MOLITORIS

For two days this week, members of Chiques United Methodist Church (UMC) will be busy in the kitchen. They’ll be making 350 apple dumplings to sell at the church’s 49th annual bazaar, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 13, at the church, 1215 E. Main St., Mount Joy. “People come for our apple dumplings,” said Audrey Buckner, bazaar chair. “They are very popular.” This is the 49th year for the bazaar, and although the pandemic canceled the event last year, it didn’t stop the apple dumpling sale. “We did a drive-through

apple dumpling pickup last year,” Buckner recalled. While the event is organized by the Women in Mission at Chiques UMC, it’s really a group effort, said Georgia Myers, who added, “We call it an ‘all-church bazaar.’ Everyone helps.” The bazaar will feature a variety of donated and handmade items from church members, including cutlery, jewelry, knitted goods and Christmas items. Cookies, pies and cakes will be sold, along with the apple dumplings. A variety of soups, including chicken noodle and vegetable, will be for sale, and turkey and beef barbecue will be available as well. All food will be sold to-go only. The bazaar will also feature a white elephant room, full of what the committee members call “attic treasures.” “Our white elephant room is always a hit,” said Myers. Items in the white elephant room are for sale by donation and will include household items, toys, books and décor. No clothing will be sold. Myers emphasized that the bazaar offers an oppor-

tunity to pick up gifts for a bargain, adding, “Everything is low-priced.” Proceeds from the bazaar will benefit local organizations, including Water Street Mission, Align Life Ministries, Mom’s House of Lancaster and Samaritan’s Purse, as well as international missions. This year’s bazaar is dedicated to Lorraine Lutz, a longtime member and chair of the event. She is the mother of Buckner, who is the third generation in her family to help with the bazaar. Buckner noted that leftover

items that are not sold are picked up by GreenDrop and donated to Purple Heart. “There really is something for everyone at the bazaar,” Buckner remarked, but she emphasized that the event also serves another purpose. “For many people, it’s a chance to come and see friends they haven’t seen in a while. It’s a social event, and it’s a time for fellowship.” Mask wearing and social distancing are encouraged. For more information on the bazaar, call the church at 717-653-5175.

Chiques United Methodist Church members (from left) Elaine Bowersox, Sylvia Mueller, Evelyn Gundlach, Georgia Myers, Lisa Gibble, Audrey Buckner and Sue Groff display some of the items for sale at the church’s upcoming bazaar.

Harvest from pg 1 Students from the OneLife Institute, who live on campus, will host games for children and families. “We’ll have a ton of activities and lots of carnival-style games with prizes,” Smith noted. Face painting will also be offered. The auxiliary will sell food during the event as well. “They’ll have pork barbecue sandwiches, chicken corn noodle soup, hot dogs and whoopie pies,” Smith said. Pleasant View ’s on-site restaurant, Hearth and Harrow, will also be open and will serve its regular menu. “Our thrift shop will be open during the event, and we’ll have at least 18 vendors

at the bazaar,” she remarked. Items for sale will include jewelry, ornaments, birdhouses, dog treats, scarves and handcrafted wood items. “Our train club has a bunch of things they’re going to be selling as well,” Smith remarked, adding that the vendors will be a mix of residents and members of the community. Pleasant View held its first Harvest Fest and Craft Bazaar in 2019 but was unable to hold the event last year due to the pandemic. “This will be our first big community event in the last year and a half, so we’re really excited about it,” Smith said. Events will be held both indoors and outdoors. “We

want people to come out and enjoy anything at their comfort level,” she noted. “We’ll have our firepits going and our heaters will be on on our patio, so people can warm up if they choose to sit outside and eat. The music will be going on inside, but we’ll have our audio system set up so people can hear it outside as well.” She said the event will offer a day to celebrate being together as a community. “We had such a great time at our event in 2019, and we’re looking forward to another fun day,” she stated. “It’s something fun to do before the craziness of the holidays kicks in.”

This grant will make it possible for the ODC to realize its longtime goal of purchasing high-quality video equipment and software for the purpose of helping its participants acquire competitive and integrated employment within the community. The ODC provides highquality vocational training and employment for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). It seeks to transition participants to supported employment within the community. Helping these individuals gain

In addition to creating video resumes, the ODC also plans on using the grant to create an ongoing series of employment scenario training videos for prospective employers. These videos will help local businesses understand what it means to hire an individual with I/DD. Stars from pg 1 As she prepares to graduate in the spring, Ansley is still weighing her options for life after high school. She’s considering the Air Force Academy, the Naval Academy and several other colleges. A summer course she took with a Harvard professor introduced her to the idea of a career in astrobiology, which she says she might consider pursuing. She’s also thinking about becoming a surgeon, but she doesn’t plan on giving up her love of space any time soon. “I’ve been interested in

astronomy since I was a kid,” she stated, noting that her family used to visit the planetarium at Lancaster’s North Museum of Nature and Science regularly and would stargaze at home with a telescope. “I love the possibilities of space exploration. I love how infinite space is. We’ve only just scratched the surface of understanding what’s out there.” Asked if she’d ever consider space travel, Ansley didn’t hesitate to answer, noting, “I would really love to do that someday.”

“Miracle on 34th Street” will be performed at the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre from Thursday, Nov. 11, through Thursday, Dec. 23. Based on the film of the same name, the classic holiday story follows 6-year-old Susan Walker, who finds the idea of believing in Santa a childish notion. However, upon meeting a department store Santa whom she believes may be the real Kris Kringle, Susan takes New York City on a heartwarming journey that shows the difference one girl’s beliefs can make. Cella Berardi, debuting as Susan Walker, will employ her singing, acting and dancing skills for her first role on stage. Berardi’s association with the theater began last summer in Dutch Apple’s Theatre Camp, “Broadway Bound.” Dale Given, playing Kris Kringle, is back at Dutch Apple after his most recent performance playing various characters in “Grumpy Old Men.” Given also played Santa in last year’s production of “Elf.” There are separate prices for dinner and show tickets for adults, children under age 12 and students ages 13 to 18. Group pricing is available for groups of 16 or more. Prices will increase in the new year. Tickets are now on sale and can be reserved by calling 717-898-1900.

Barons Earn First District Win in 10 Years

BY ERIC G. STARK

Manheim earned its first District Three girls’ volleyball win in 10 years, beating Octorara in three games on Oct. 28. In a packed and loud gym at Octorara, the Lady Barons posted game scores of 25-23, 25-22 and 25-9 in the Class 3A tournament. “Yeah, was just a big confidence thing for everybody,” head coach Jason Moyer said about the win. “They (the girls) just went nuts after the game; it was awesome. The bus ride home was just it’s crazy. ...You can look at the girls and see that they believe in themselves.” The first game was very intense with the teams’ trading points. After taking the first game that came down to the wire, things unraveled a bit for the Barons in Game Two. The Braves got into good momentum swing with some tough serving and the Barons got into a funk finding themselves down 14-4. Manheim chipped away at the lead and tied the score at 18-18 and then just pushed ahead and were able to pull it out. “It took air out of the Braves,” Moyer said. “It was like us winning the Super Bowl. You could see they were

defeated, giving up that lead. We won that last game 25-9. At the point, we were in motion, man, it was great.” It was a team effort. Maddie Knier had 11 kills and four blocks. Emma Moyer and Rachel Nolt had seven and six kills, respectively. Moyer added four serving aces and Damon notched 12 digs. Grace Stoltzfus dished out 30 assists. In the quarterfinals, the Barons face top-seeded Spring Grove Tuesday and suffered a 3-0 loss on game scores of 2518, 25-14 and 25-11. “Our girls played well, but just could not keep up with all the weapons that Spring Grove has on their team,” Moyer said. “Spring Grove has a tremendous, well-balanced team.” He said his rotational defense, which is unique, as it takes the line away from better hitters when they are hitting outside. The strategy worked early for the Barons, but Spring Grove made adjustments. Damon had six digs and played great defense for the Barons, Moyer said. She was the team’s libero. He said Kneir blocked well and had nine kills. Natalie Seigrist finished with three blocks, Emma Moyer had six digs and Stoltzfus had two aces and 16 assists. The Barons finished

the season with a 13-7 record. For more photos, see www.townlively.com CROSS COUNTRY Barons’ coach Ryan Kennedy said the highlight of the day in the District Three girls’ cross country meet was Reagan Ibach, a freshman, who finished first on our team for the first time this season. “I thought overall our athletes performed well,” Kennedy said. “It was an accomplishment for them to qualify as individuals for a meet that is becoming increasingly more difficult to qualify for.” Ibach placed 127th overall with a time of 22:09. Jenna Mofett (22:17) was 135th, followed by Julie Lindberg (22:37, 152) and Olivia Sunderland (23:02, 170). Michael Greenwald represented the boys, running an 18:49, good for 161 overall. BOYS’ SOCCER The Manheim boys’ soccer team suffered a 2-1 defeat to Hershey in the District Three Class 3A quarterfinal tournament last Thursday night in Hershey. The Trojans, the No.1 seed in the tourney, had their hands full against Manheim, who finished the season with an 11-9 record. Hershey got on the board first, scoring two minutes

into the contest on a goal by Ben Zimmer, an all-state midfielder. Hershey, which had given up only six goals all year, gave up the tying score on a goal by Manheim’s Bradyn Dombach, who took a pass from teammate Gabe Redcay. Hershey led 2-1 at intermission, but Dombach, 20 minutes into the second half, got his second goal of the contest, tying the game at 2-2. Zimmer notched the second goal and the game-winner for Hershey with about eight minutes to play. FOOTBALL With its win last Friday against Cocalico, the Barons notched their 27th championship in school history. Manheim, playing in heavy rain at Rettew Stadium, defeated the Eagles 42-20, forcing a three-way tie for the Section Two title with Warwick and Cocalico, all finishing with 4-1 records. Senior quarterback Judd Novak finished 7-for-13 for 108 yards passing. He also ran for touchdowns of 11, eight and 16 yards, respectively, gaining 105 yards rushing. Running back Justin Heffernan scored twice and collected 102 yards on the ground. The Barons got on the scoreboard first when Owen

Sensenig returned the opening kickoff 93 yards. On the defensive side of the ball, Kahlen Watt, Nick Haas, and Novak played big roles in limiting the Eagles’ vaulted running game. With a 9-1 record, Manheim drew the No.2 seed for districts and a first-round bye. They will host a game Nov. 12.
