Jane Austen’s “Sense and Sensibility” was published in 1811, but the storyline is just as relevant today as it was more than 200 years ago, said the Manheim Central High School students who are cast in the play, based on the novel. The play will be performed at Manheim Central Middle School, 261 White Oak Road, Manheim, at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 18 and 19, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 20.
“Even though the story takes place a long time ago, people are still motivated by the same things today as they are in the play,” said Jonathan Wenger, a senior who plays Colonel Brandon. “It’s all about love and money.”
Set in late 18th-century England, “Sense and Sensibility” tells the story of sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, who find themselves penniless and alone after their father dies suddenly. The pair must learn to find happiness in a society where reputation is everything and money rules all.
Ava Graff, a sophomore who portrays Marianne Dashwood, said audiences can expect to relate to the characters on stage. “The issues of the struggle of women are still relevant today,” she shared. “The economic issues facing families are relevant, and the way women are perceived in society is still relevant.”
Although the play may sound like it covers serious topics, it’s full of humorous moments, said Lauren Huber, a senior who plays Elinor Dashwood. “It has some fun dancing and choreography on stage, which is a little bit unexpected and not typical in a play,” she remarked. “Come prepared for the unexpected in general. The way the show is done is very different from the book, or, if you’ve seen the movie of ‘Sense and Sensibility,’ it’s different from that as well.”
Ava noted that the play provided opportunities to get creative. “People get to form set pieces, and a lot of the action is very big and exaggerated,” she said. “Jane Austen was making fun of society when she wrote the book, so the play reflects that. It’s a commentary on society.”
Not only did the cast members have to learn to speak with a British accent for the show, said Ben Ginder, a senior who plays John Dashwood, but they also had to fully understand their characters - even if that character was very different from themselves. “In my case, my character is not a caring person, so learning how to deliver my lines in a way that is mean has been a challenge for me,” he said. “We’ve all been working not just on our accents, but on how our characters act, how they walk, how they interact with each other.”
He encouraged everyone to come to see the show and emphasized that people should not be intimated by the time period of the play. “It’s a very easy-to-understand show. It’s easy to get into the characters and what’s happening on stage,” he remarked. “It’s not like trying to read Shakespeare.”

On Thanksgiving morning, the streets of Elizabethtown will be overrun with people chasing turkeys. The Great Turkey Chase will be held on Thursday, Nov. 24, beginning at the Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church, 996 E. High St. Registration will open at 6:45 a.m., and the race will start at 8:15 a.m.
As race director Grace Wells explained, participants won’t really be chasing turkeys during the 5K run/walk. “We will have stuffed turkeys located throughout the course, and when people find one,
they can bring it to the end of the race and we’ll have frozen turkeys for them,” she shared.
The event was formerly called the Great Turkey Hunt, but Wells noted that the name was changed this year for clarity. “The feedback we received made it sound like it was a hunting event, and we wanted to be clear that it’s a race event,” she said.
Prizes will be awarded in various age groups, including age 14 and under and ages 15 to 19, and then in 10-year groups up to age 80-plus.
“We have gotten 80-plus-year-olds who participated in the past, and I want to be sure we recognize them for coming out,” Wells said.

Center To Host Jurassic World Live Tour
Jurassic World Live Tour, a live, family entertainment experience that brings the thrills of Jurassic World to fans, will return to Giant Center in Hershey. Showtimes are Friday, Nov. 25, at 7 p.m.; Saturday, Nov. 26, at 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.; and Sunday, Nov. 27, at noon and 3 p.m.
The show features dinosaurs from the movie franchise, including Blue the velociraptor and a Tyrannosaurus rex more than 40 feet in length. The production features more than 24 film-accurate, life-
sized dinosaurs operated by animatronics and performers.
Jurassic World’s score combined with projection and scenery will transform the arena into the dense jungles of Isla Nublar, where gyrospheres roll through the valley and scientists work to unravel a corrupt plan and save a new dinosaur from a terrible fate.
The Giant Center is located at 950 W. Hersheypark Drive, Hershey, All seats are reserved; tickets are available at www.ticketmaster.com or the venue box office.

New this year, the event will feature a kids’ run, beginning at 9:15 a.m. The kids’ course will feature an approximately 1-mile run, with the possibility of shorter distances as well, depending on the turnout. “I’ve always loved kids’ runs, and last year, we were working with ECHOS to set up the race, and they suggested adding one, so I decided to go for it this year,” Wells said. The kids’ run will be sponsored by The Tatted Toy Guys in Elizabethtown.
Although the event is not being coordinated with ECHOS this year, proceeds from the race will still benefit the organization, Wells remarked. ECHOS provides family and individual supportive services, information and resources, eviction prevention and diversion, emergency shelter programs, job readiness
frompg
and workforce development and more.
Last year, 169 runners participated in the race, and Wells noted that she hopes to reach 200 participants in this year’s event.
“It’s a very friendly course, very manageable,” she said. “It’s a fun family event that even the youngest ones can do. If they can’t do the 5K, they can participate in the kids’ run, or we also have a lot of parents who push their kids in strollers. It’s a nice thing to do with your family before you go home and eat your Thanksgiving meal.”
For more information on the Great Turkey Chase or to register, visit https://runsignup.com and search for “Great Turkey Chase 5K.” Online registration will end at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 23, but people may register in person at the event.

The students partnered with 34 local organizations, signing up for projects that interested them. “Some students worked in classrooms at preschools or the elementary or middle school level, helping teachers with lessons,” Fulmer remarked. “Some did groundskeeping, like raking leaves or cleaning up outdoor spaces. There was a wide variety of projects.”

Fulmer explained that Going Beyond offered service opportunities for students in 2018 and 2019 but had to pause during the height of the pandemic. As students returned to places this year or visited new locations, they fulfilled a goal of the program, he noted.
“We want our students to be engaged in the community,” Fulmer said. “We believe in giving back to others, and we believe that we are not meant to do life alone. We want them to learn about other perspectives and different life circumstances and develop empathy and understanding.”
He emphasized that the feedback he received from the organizations was overwhelmingly positive. “Everyone was incredibly excited and happy to work with us, and many of the organizations want us to come back next year,” he commented.
“They were impressed with the students’ attitudes and work ethics.”
Fulmer is in the process of creating a follow-up program, allowing students to create their own service projects by themselves or in small groups that will last beyond a onetime experience. “We want our students to have lasting, ongoing relationships with the people in our community,” he said. “We don’t want this to be just one day.”

Going Beyond projects included working in elementary school classrooms.
Students completed outdoor projects as part of the Going Beyond day.
Along with vendors, the show will feature lots of food, said Ruhl.
“My husband and I make chicken corn noodle soup,” she stated.
“We’ll also have hot dogs, baked goods and drinks. You can grab something to enjoy while you’re shopping, you can eat here or you can take it to go.” The soup will also be available to go by the quart.
This is the first time the show is
returning since the beginning of the pandemic, Eakman noted. “We had done this for five years, but 2019 was our last one,” she said. “We’re excited to do it again.”
Vendor entry fees and all proceeds from food sales will support the church’s mission team. Ruhl explained that a group from the church takes a mission trip somewhere in the United States annually.
Although this year’s destination is not finalized yet, the group will be going in June of 2023.
Eakman encouraged everyone to check out the craft show, adding, “Come out and start your holiday shopping. There is plenty of free parking, and the room is easily accessible for everyone.”

In the late 1980’s thru mid 1990’s Dan volunteered as a youth baseball and football coach for the CBAA in Columbia.
Dan worked as a forklift mechanic at the former Grinnell/ ITT in Columbia in the late 1970s thru 1987 and then at Lift Inc. in Lancaster from 1987 until his retirement in December of 2019. In retirement, Dan was a part-time driver for Buck Hill Construction.
Dan was very mechanically inclined and he enjoyed spending time in his garage working on and fixing many different things, including automobiles. He also enjoyed the many beach trips to Ocean City, New Jersey that he took with his family, including the most recent trip this past October. Dan could also be found watching some of his favorite things on TV such as the Philadelphia Phillies baseball games, NASCAR races, the TV show American Pickers, and TV programs about the Alaska Triangle. Barons Fall in PIAA- 2A Championship
BY ERIC PYLES
If we adapt the old saying ‘Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all’ to the Manheim Central field hockey team it would go something like this...’Tis better to have qualified, played and lost then to never have qualified.’
That would be a fancy way to say that the Central field hockey team qualified for the PIAA2A Championship but dropped out with a 6-0 first-round loss to Villa Maria, a top 25 state ranked team on MaxPreps, on November 8th. The loss ends Manheim’s season at 16-8-1.
“The girls played hard in this state playoff game but
unfortunately were outmatched by a faster pace of game and a team with a very high skill level,” said head coach Morgan Briggs, “We are proud of the team and all they accomplished this season.”
Manheim went down fighting, nearly doubling the Lady Hurricanes in corners, 11-6, but Villa Maria held the edge
in shots, 15-4, leading to nine Laci Nelson saves.
“It was encouraging to see us earn many corners, but we could not convert,” said Briggs.
The Lady Barons found themselves in the PIAA-2A bracket opposite Villa Maria, the winner of the District One Championship, courtesy of a 4-1 loss to Northern York in
their final consolation game of the District 3-2A Championship. That November 5th loss left Manheim as the sixth seed out of District 3.
“We played a great first and fourth quarter,” stated Briggs. “We struggled with our possession in the second and third quarters and got beat with their strong hits and passing through
the middle of the field.”
Despite the 4-1 final, Central posted a 15-13 shot advantage while finishing one off in the corner department where Northern held a 10-9 edge. Nelson posted another nine save game while Libby Urban accounted for Manheim’s lone score with help from Mikayla Appel.
UDS Seeks Volunteers, Sponsors For Fundraiser
United Disabilities Services (UDS) Foundation - a nonprofit committed to helping seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities lead more independent and fulfilling lives - has announced its 52nd annual gift-wrapping fundraiser. UDS’ gift-wrapping booth
can be found at Park City Center in Lancaster from Black Friday, Nov. 25, through Saturday, Dec. 24.
The gift-wrapping booth is one of UDS’ largest yearly fundraisers. In order to staff this year’s booth through its entire 30-day run, UDS is
seeking 500 volunteers. Those interested in volunteering should contact Radha Davé at 717-715-8921 or radhad @udservices.org. They may also learn more and contact UDS at www.udservices.org/ gwbvolunteer. Although volunteers who sign up early have more choice of the time slots, UDS will continue to accept volunteers throughout the holiday season until Dec. 24.
UDS also welcomes new and returning sponsors to help cover the costs of giftwrapping supplies; for more details, contact Larry Aubrey at 717-682-5575 or larrya@udservices.org. Both local businesses and individual donors are invited to sponsor the booth.

Taking part in scenarios like a traffic stop, learning about weapon safety and criminal procedure and participating in fitness training are just some of the activities that youths can experience at the Pennsylvania State Police Hill Impact Program. The free 14-week course, which is open to young men and women ages 15 through 18, will take place at the Pennsylvania State Police Academy, 175 Hersheypark Drive, Hershey, on Tuesdays from Jan. 17 through April 18, 2023, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
“(We want youths to) come through this program and to see what the Pennsylvania State Police department has to offer,” said Trooper Clint Long, program director. “They (may) gain a love for the career and want to pursue that later in life. That is our goal.”
Students who register for the program will receive matching Tshirts and hats to wear during the classes, as well as water bottles. Each session will include physical training (PT), followed by a time of instruction and hands-on activities.
“We introduce them to paramilitary disciplines - marching, standing
at attention and saluting. We introduce them to physical fitness and we move into our law enforcement curriculum,” Long explained. “The first 30 minutes is a military drill and PT, and then there is an hour and a half of scenario-based training.”
Scenarios may include re-enacting a traffic stop or responding to a mock call. “We make it fun and interactive. We try and let the kids do a lot of hands-on stuff in a safe way,” said Long. “They are (learning) and having fun at the same time.”
This is the third session of the Hill Impact Program, which is named for the Pennsylvania State Police Academy, known to locals as The Hill because of its location in Hershey. The course is open to students from all geographical locations. “For the first session, we had some students who drove three hours one way to attend,” Long pointed out.
He said that the students often come away from the program realizing that law enforcement officers have chosen their career because they want to serve the community. “As troopers, we put the community above ourselves. It’s amazing how fast they learn that and how quickly they catch on,” Long said.
The program also encourages a relationship between young people and law enforcement officers. “We have a core group of instructors that will be here every Tuesday. The kids not only are familiar with the faces, they develop a mentorship out of it as well,” Long noted. “We urge the kids if they have questions or need anything to reach out to us. We supply them with our contact informa-
tion and we have question-andanswer sessions. It’s a great way for us to have that accessibility in the community.”
Long encourages students to register as soon as possible, since space is limited and spots fill up quickly. Those who complete the course will take part in a graduation ceremony and receive a certificate. For more information about the program and to obtain an application, contact Long at ra-sprecruiter-acad@pa.gov or 717-497-4577.
