The GateHouse At Riverview Tower Celebrates Grand Opening By Chelsea Peifer
The GateHouse is breathing new life into one of Marietta’s most recognizable historic properties. On Oct. 24, the organization hosted a grand opening celebration for the public at its newest facility: The GateHouse at Riverview Tower, located in the stately stone mansion that overlooks the intersection of routes 23 and 441 in Marietta. The GateHouse, a nonprofit addiction recovery after-care program that began in 1972 and operates facilities in Lititz, Mountville, and Lancaster city, purchased the historic Marietta property in March 2018. Executive director Jodi Holland said the purchase was made possible by a $250,000 grant the organization received from the Capitol Area Behavioral Health Collaboration in March 2017. The stone mansion was built in 1876

under the direction of ironmaster Henry Miller Watts, who had the home constructed as a wedding gift for his son, Ethelbert. In addition to his success in Marietta’s iron industry, Henry’s accomplishments included serving as an ambassador to Austria. Holland explained that the mansion’s three-story tower was modeled after a castle Henry admired in Austria. Most recently, the estate belonged to the late Donald and Joyce Hershey, who purchased the property in 1981 and extensively remodeled the 9,000square-foot house while preserving many of its original features, such as carved wooden doorknobs, gas chandeliers, and oak and walnut patterned floors. The Hersheys, who were among the original founders of LCBC (Lives Changed by Christ) Church, had converted the property’s garage into the first venue for LCBC. See The GateHouse pg 2

Offering Dignity, Hope, And Healing Sparkling For The Holidays Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony Held For Providence Shelter
Marietta Candlelight Tour Of Homes Set For Dec. 1
By Dayna M. Reidenouer
“We call this the Water Street Marriott location and youth hostel,” Mike Burkholder, chair of the board of directors of Water Street Mission, 210 S. Prince St., Lancaster, joked to open his comments at the Nov. 13 ribbon-cutting ceremony for the mission’s new Providence emergency shelter. The facility was created by renovating 9,000 square feet of warehouse space into a comfortable, attractive place where individuals may receive immediate care, shelter, and the opportunity for a better life. “Several years ago, (we looked at how to) align our core values and what we See Water Street Mission pg 2

believe God’s heart is for our guests and our facilities,” Burkholder continued, noting that offering dignity, hope, and healing is part of the mission’s values. “(At Providence), guests will have (access to) calmness and peace and achieve restoration and equity in their lives.” The importance of treating people with dignity and respect was emphasized numerous times throughout the ceremony, as well as during tours of the facility afterward. For Water Street Mission leaders, that starts with clients’ first impressions as they enter the shelter and move throughout the venue. The front desk has the feel of a quality hotel, and the sleeping quarters will include numerous single cots. Gray manufactured plank floors run underfoot, and cream-colored walls surround the space. Vice president of programs Colleen Adams pointed out that the sconce lighting was designed to dim as the lights-out time of 10 p.m. approaches.
Smaller lights ring the floor so guests and staff members can move safely throughout the building. Locking cellphone charging stations are located in the sleeping rooms. The new shelter was created with trauma-informed design, with safety for individuals being paramount, Adams said. Each of the shower stalls in the restrooms is private and has a heavy locking door, and clear sight lines within each of the men’s and women’s areas are maintained. After they enter the building, the only time men and women might encounter each other is in the shared laundry room. Adams noted that families stay together elsewhere on campus. The facility also includes respite rooms for those who need downtime before sleeping, indoor storage for personal belongings, fewer bunk beds and more single beds to improve personal space, and a hotbox room where guests can have their belongings heattreated to reduce the possibility
of insects and germs. “We want the layout, design, and feel of the space to communicate dignity and value to each guest,” said Water Street Mission president Jack Crowley. “ We want our guests to know that God cares for them and they are worthy of love and respect. We believe that an environment that communicates dignity is an important first step to building trust and beginning the process of restoration through the other programs and support offered at Water Street.” The new facility’s name reflects Water Street Mission’s belief that God provides and protects. “Thinking ahead - whether hours, days, or months - is impossible when you’re experiencing homelessness,” Crowley said. “When they come here … they can think about their future.” LanCo MyHome director Jennifer Koppel commented that she is happy to see Providence open. “The Lancaster County Homeless Coalition is only as strong as its
partners,” she said. “(LanCo MyHome’s) new strategic plan focuses on human-centered equity and justice. (Providence) takes that to … a new level. People will see that they are welcome, that they are loved.” Mission staff members will oversee the shelter’s operations, but readers who want to volunteer may spend time with guests at the winter weekend day shelter. For more information, readers may email volunteer coordinator Heather Ross at hross@wsm.org. Since 1905, Water Street Mission has aimed to provide an environment of hope and healing where at-risk men, women, and children in Lancaster County can find a hand-up and restoration with God. In addition to food and shelter, all guests have access to medical, dental, behavioral health, spiritual, and career support while on campus. For more information about the programs and services of Water Street Mission, readers may visit www.wsm.org.
The GateHouse from pg 1
Christkindlmarkt from pg 1
At the grand opening of The GateHouse at Riverview Tower, speakers included The GateHouse board president Mark F. Walmer, drug court judge David L. Ashworth, and Kristi Martarano, the future clinical director of The GateHouse at Riverview Tower. Martarano is a former client of The GateHouse, a graduate of Leadership Lancaster, and the current clinical director of The GateHouse for women in Mountville. The Mountville facility will be converted to serve men, while the Marietta location will be for women. Holland explained that the 90-day recovery program begins with a two-week orientation and that a professional and credentialed treatment team works with each resident on counseling, recovery, life skills, and connecting with local 12-step groups.
The 15th annual Historic Schaefferstown Christkindlmarkt will take place on Friday, Dec. 13, from 4 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the lower level of the Thomas R. Brendle Museum, 111 N. Market St., Schaefferstown. The show will feature artisans and their handcrafted traditional early American and Pennsylvania German crafts for holiday entertaining and gift giving. Items available for purchase will include balsam wreaths and Christmas decorations, folk art wood carvings, feather trees, quilt art, hooked rugs, felted birds, fraktur prints, pottery and redware, baskets, star crafts, soap, beeswax ornaments, and pressed flowers. Handmade pretzels will also be available for sale.
“We want to encourage and transform the lives of individuals who are struggling with addiction, and we do that by walking beside them in a safe, community-driven space,” summarized Holland. “Our goal is to reintegrate (residents) into the community.” Holland said that establishing a new facility truly meets a need in the area, as the organization had been serving approximately 5% of its referrals. “Forty-seven years is a long time for this type of service. The drugs may change, but addiction is not new,” she continued. “We’ve consistently been able to serve people.” The GateHouse will welcome online donations at www.extra give.org through the Extraordinary Give on Friday, Nov. 22. To learn more about the organization and its services, readers may visit https://gatehouse.org.

Did Yeshua (Jesus) lie? You must decide this for yourself. There can be no middle ground, either He lied or He told the truth. If you think He was an outright liar there is no reason to read any further. You might as well put the paper down and hope that you are 100% correct. If you aren’t you are doomed. If on the other hand, you believe that Yeshua did not lie, the following is for you. Yeshua said that He was The Almighty One’s Son and that He and His Father are one (John 5:17-18, 10:30 & 38 & 17:1). He said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). Also, “He that does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him” (John 5:23). Also, “The Father judges no man but has entrusted all judgment to the Son” (John 5:22). “Whoever believes in Him is not condemned; but whoever does not believe is condemend already, because he does not believe in the name of the Son of The Almighty One” (John 3:18). In Addition, the Father loves the Son and has given all things into His hand. “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for the wrath of The Almighty One remains on him” (John 3:36) “Do not be deceived; The Almighty One cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows” (Galatians 6:7). “Trust in the L-rd with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the L-rd and shun evil” (Proverbs 3:5-7). “The fear of the L-rd is the beginning of knowledge; but fools despise wisdom and discipline” (Proverbs 1:7). “There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death” (Proverbs 16:25). “He who conceals his sins does not prosper; but whoever confessses and renounces them finds mercy” (Proverbs 28:13). “Who has gone up to heaven and come down? Who has gathered up the wind in the hollow of His hands? Who has wrapped up the waters in His cloak? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name and the name of His Son? Tell me if you know!” (Proverbs 30:4). “Seek the L-rd while He may be found; call on Him while He is near” (Isaiah 55:6). Now immediately without hesitation, ask The Almighty One if Yeshua is His Son and ask Him to reveal His Son to you. The property of the Marietta Senior Apartments, 601 E. Market St., will be decked out for the holidays and open to tour participants thanks to the efforts of manager Lisa Kashner and director of property management Jo Raff. “This is our first year decorating the outside of the building, so we’re going all out and channeling our inner Joanna Gaines,” said Kashner with a laugh. The building stands where the B.F. Hiestand Lumber Mill was originally built in 1848. Kashner noted that the apartments’ residents traditionally go above and beyond for Halloween. Being on the Marietta Candlelight Tour for the first time has given everyone another holiday to throw their energy and creativity into. The building’s lobbies and community room will be part of the tour, as well as the apartment of resident Jan Newcomer. Born and raised in Wrightsville, Newcomer moved into Marietta Senior Apartments five years ago after retiring and moving back to the area from Lewes, Del. Her apartment features an array of country and primitive décor. “It truly is a community event showcasing the entire town during the holiday season,” said Preston. Preston explained that the Marietta Candlelight Tour plan-
ning committee only takes a three-week break each year before it starts the planning of the next tour. “You can see the passion in their eyes when start talking about their thoughts for the next year,” remarked Preston. Tickets may be purchased in advance for a discount at www.mariettarestoration.org or by calling 717-426-4048. Tickets are also available to buy in advance at the locations listed on the website. On the day of the event, tickets may be purchased in Marietta at Donegal Intermediate School, 1177 River Road; Old Town Hall Museum, North Waterford Avenue and Walnut Street; and First National Escape, 100 W. Market St. All proceeds from the Marietta Candlelight Tour will benefit the MRA and its efforts to restore and preserve the historic buildings in Marietta. A map is provided with the tour program. Parking and shuttle bus service will be available from various stops throughout Marietta, and the Rivertowne Trolley Company will be operating as well. In addition to the participating homes, Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church celebrating its 200th anniversary - will be on the tour as this year’s
featured church. Several other historic properties will be open to participants as well, including Old Town Hall Museum. Built in 1847, the building now hosts a museum on the first floor with a unique collection of Marietta and Lancaster County memorabilia. Union Meeting House will showcase work from local artists for people to browse and purchase. Resident organist Kirk Garner will play Christmas music on the Meeting House’s 1847 Henry Knauff Pipe Organ. Arts and crafts vendors will be set up at First National Escape and Pioneer Fire Company. Chicken and waffle meals will be available to purchase at the fire company from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. At the Marietta Community House, Nissley Vineyards will offer wine sampling and wine to purchase, and Marietta Wax Company will be set up selling primitive decor. In addition, Susquehanna Waldorf School, 15 W. Walnut St., will host its annual Winter Faire from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., where tour participants - as well as the public - are invited to stop in for holiday shopping, children’s games and activities, and food and beverages. “Marietta truly sparkles on the first Sunday of every December,” Preston said. “It’s the highlight to a lot of people’s holiday season, (and) it really kicks off Christmas in the river town.”
Thanksgiving Dinner from pg 1 Thanksgiving is a day for families to relax and enjoy a delicious meal with their loved ones. It is not a time to be alone; however, not everyone is blessed to have a family, or relatives nearby, to share this day with. That is why the St. Mark’s United Methodist Church (UMC) family and community members will be cooking and serving the church’s 15th annual free community Thanksgiving Day dinner. In 2018, more than 90 volunteers helped cook and serve Thanksgiving meals to approximately 400 people. After guests enjoyed a delicious home-cooked turkey dinner, many volunteers sat together and enjoyed Thanksgiving dinner, too. This year’s free Thanksgiving Day dinner will be served on Thursday, Nov. 28, in the fellowship hall of St. Mark’s UMC, 27 E. Main St., Mount Joy. Besides turkey and gravy, the meal will include stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, vegetables, rolls and butter, cranberry sauce, dessert, and beverages. People who want to enjoy dinner at the church with family, friends, and community members will be greeted, seated, and served the family-style dinner at noon and should plan to arrive between 11:45 a.m. and noon.
Takeout options are also available. Those who pick up a dinner to take home should arrive at the church between 11 and 11:20 a.m. only. Arrangements can also be made in advance to have meals delivered to individuals who are sick or unable to leave their homes. To make reservations for eatin, takeout, or delivery, individuals are asked to call the church at 717-653-5493 by Monday, Nov. 25. Organizer Janet Lehman noted that although reservations are strongly encouraged so that the team can better plan for the dinner, walkins will be warmly greeted. Lehman explained that the goal of St. Mark’s UMC is to provide a Thanksgiving meal for everyone in the community who is looking for a place to enjoy a delicious home-cooked Thanksgiving dinner. “So whether you are going through a difficult time, you have no family in the area, or (you) would like a warm (and) welcoming place to take your family for a mouthwatering turkey dinner, St. Mark’s is the place to come for your Thanksgiving dinner,” stated Lehman. Although there is no cost for the dinner, donations will be accepted. Volunteers are needed in the evening on Wednesday, Nov.
27, and on Thanksgiving Day. Volunteers are sought to donate cakes and pies, peel potatoes, make stuffing, set tables and chairs, cook dinner, serve the dinner, clean up following the dinner, and wash dishes. To sign up to help, interested individuals may contact Lehman at 717-653-4189 or lehmanfamily@comcast.net. Members of St. Mark’s UMC believe that they are called to invite, connect, equip, and send followers of Jesus to meet needs, touch lives, and change the world. One way that the St. Mark’s family can meet needs and touch lives in the community is through its food ministry. In addition to the free Thanksgiving Day dinner, St. Mark’s volunteers, with help from Mary Mother of the Church Parish, serve free meals to the community on the third Sunday of most months from 4 to 5 p.m. in St. Mark’s fellowship hall. Pictured on front: The congregation of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Mount Joy welcomes anyone to enjoy a free Thanksgiving dinner at noon on Nov. 28 at the church. Takeout options are available. Reservations are strongly encouraged, and volunteers are needed.

A delegation of leaders from LMC - a fellowship of Anabaptist churches, formerly known as Lancaster Mennonite Conference, took part in a trip to Ethiopia from Aug. 27 to Sept. 6. The travelers included global delegate Tom Eshleman, bishop Glenn Kauffman, bishop Rodney Martin, bishop Alvin Motley, bishop James Sutton, and moderator Keith Weaver. According to Eshleman, the purposes of the trip included establishing a relationship between Meserete Kristos Church (MKC) and LMC, which had spawned MKC, and offering an opportunity for the LMC leaders to learn from MKC leaders. During an introduction of several LMC leaders to MKC’s administrative staff at a regional office of MKC, former MKC president Tewodros Beyene said
Farmers and all those who like to eat are invited to A Time of Thanksgiving, which will be offered on Thursday, Nov. 21, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the MidAtlantic Farm Credit Community Room, 15 Eby Chiques Road, Mount Joy. The event will feature food, fellowship, and faith, along with the opportunity to thank God for His blessings. All are welcome, especially farmers. Farmers and other attendees are asked to bring a fall-themed dessert or beverage, such as pumpkin roll, apple pie, and hot or cold cider. The farmer-focused group meets on the first and third Thursdays. For more information, contact don.hover@binkleyhurst.com.
it was meaningful to him that the LMC leaders sought to learn from MKC as he has observed that Europeans and North Americans usually visit to provide instruction. The plan for the trip to Ethiopia originated while MKC vice president Kelbessa Muleta and the chair of the Meserete Kristos College Board were in the U.S. in 2018 on a fundraising and promotional tour. LMC leaders were received as honorary delegates at the MKC General Assembly Meeting, during which a procedural vote for the church’s presidential election resulted in the conclusion of Beyene’s tenure as president of the church. After the vote, Beyene asked for a basin and pitcher to be placed on the stage and for incoming president Desalegn Abede to be seated on

SWAN - Changing Lives One Class At A Time By Ann Mead Ash
About a decade ago, Diana Vuolo, founder/executive director of SWAN (Scaling Walls A Note at a Time), was an empty nester. A professional violinist and music teacher, she listened as her husband, Chuck, a pastor, described the trauma suffered by the children of the incarcerated offenders he was working with. “My husband was doing a lot of pastoring with criminal offenders, and I was starting to see the families up close and seeing how devastating parental incarceration was for children,” said Diana, who asked herself what she could do to help. “I thought music would be a great way to help them, and that’s what I had to give. I saw (music) was healing for
them (and helped them) to realize they weren’t the only ones (struggling with this issue).” The result was SWAN, a onehour after-school music program for School District of Lancaster (SDoL) students ages 6 to 18. Both group and private lessons are now held in 13 SDoL schools. SWAN also has a summer camp, which meets at the Wharton Business School in Lancaster. “ We give the children 120 hours of instruction during camp,” said Diana, who noted that once the SDoL recognized the need for the program, SWAN was welcomed into the schools. “The district is becoming more trauma informed and trauma aware,” said Diana, who added that recent state laws will require teachers to become more trauma

informed. Currently, SWAN receives referrals of students whose parents have a history of incarceration from intervention specialists and family counselors who work for the district. Each Tuesday at 3 p.m., Lauren Reyes, a SWAN music educator, meets with about 10 students at Wickersham Elementary. Her hour with the group includes singing and working with instruments such as hand drums, drumline instruments, guitars, and ukuleles. “What Lauren is bringing this year is a program that uses melody and percussion along with singing,” said Diana. Reyes said that she wants to promote improvisation and collaboration to encourage students to create. “I try to get a good community working together,” she said, noting that the approach she uses is multicultural. Anny, a fifth-grade Wickersham student who attends, said that she enjoys SWAN because she is with others who enjoy the same things she does. She also appreciates how participating in the musical program affects her outlook. “I like that music can change your mood,” she said. “If someone is sad, music can brighten up their day.” Willow, who is in first grade, called SWAN “a magical place.” “I have always liked music, and I like to be in programs,” said
Willow, who listed a number of instruments she has had a chance to play through SWAN. Willow added that she likes to perform, even though she may be a little nervous to start. “After I perform, I feel happy and I am ready to enjoy the rest of my day and think about this wonderful memory,” she said. “It makes me feel confident and gives me courage.” Diana explained that performance is an important part of the program, noting that participants perform for family, friends, and community members in settings like schools, nursing homes, and First Friday events. One of SWAN’s first students is now helping to teach others. Bryanna Still, who is now a student at Dayspring Christian Academy, has dealt with a lot of trauma, but she has excelled musically. “She has made wonderful decisions,” said Diana of Bryanna, who assisted at the SWAN summer camp and won accolades from the instructors. “We can help children with their behavior, physical, emotional, scholastic, and social issues if we understand what is going on in their lives,” said Diana. “Their present circumstances do not need to determine who they are or what they do.” Readers who would like to learn more about SWAN may visit www.swan4kids.org.

LCHS To Stage “Little Women” highlights the March girls coming of age and finding romance, while growing into women and finding independence. Wagner said she and the cast have focused on the loyalty of family. “You can go away and experience your own dreams, but when something happens with the family everyone comes together,” Wagner said, adding that her cast has also focused on women’s rights during that time period. “The March women were taught to have their own opinions,” said Wagner. “They were well educated, and they were given great respect in the home. placed on females, in their own home they were looked upon as equals and great assets to the family.” Fertal is relishing her double role as Jo and the narrator. A fan of both the book and movies, she was hoping to be cast in the lead. “I relate (to the character of Jo),” noted Fertal, who said one of her favorite scenes is between Beth and Jo just before Beth becomes sick. “The relationship between all the sisters is very close, but Jo’s bond with Beth is very special,” said Fertal. Readers who would like to purchase tickets to “Little Women” may email tbrill@lchsyes.org or call 717-509-0310.

Tracy Wagner, director of the Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) fall production of “Little Women,” said that the play had been on her short list for many years. “I have always been a fan,” said Wagner. “It’s a classic that teenagers should know, and the themes are universal and lifelong.” In celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Louisa May Alcott classic, which was written in two parts, Wagner has chosen the Thomas Hischak production to be staged at the school, 650 Juliette Ave., Lancaster, on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Nov. 21, 22, and 23, at 7:30 p.m. each evening. “Little Women” is set in Massachusetts during the Civil War. It is the story of the March sisters and their mother, who are waiting for their father and husband, respectively, to return from battle. Jo, played by Bernadette Fertal, is the second to the oldest of the four sisters. In Hischak’s adaptation, Fertal will also play a character named Josephine, an older version of Jo, who serves as narrator. Along with her sisters, Meg, played by Aria Yang; Beth, played by Maddi Lewis; and Amy, played by Alexis Lenhart in Act 1 and Sheridan Riva in Act 2, Jo struggles with
the limitations placed on her as a woman while coming of age in the Civil War era. Other cast members include the girls’ mother, Marmie, played by Natalie Knox; Laurie, played by Aaron Kern; John Brooke, played by Xavier LeFevre; Aunt March, played by Jaime Ely; Hannah, played by Cassie Peris; Mr. Laurence, played by Oliver Klemmer; and Mr. March, played by Jim Mikulski. Wagner emphasized that the Hischak version of the play spotlights some of the most memorable moments of the novel, focusing on Jo’s journey growing up during the Civil War. Although many cast members were familiar with the story, understanding the differences between present-day life and daily living during the Civil War era has been a challenge. “We spent a lot of time thinking about what life was truly like then,” said Wagner. “We especially talked about how different it was for women.” Wagner also turned to Dana Kinsey, who teaches dramaturgy at LCHS. Her class members researched the era and created a reference binder for cast members to help immerse them in the time period. The heartwarming themes fans remember from the novel are present in the adaptation, according to Wagner, which

HOMEOWNERS H in their own words…… “Building your home can seem like a daunting task, but CB Burkholder Homes was with us every step of the way and answered all of our questions. They offered several floor plans and design packages, which made the selection process much easier. Additionally, we were pleasantly surprised to learn about how many features were included in the models. Watching the construction progress was fun and exciting for the entire family. Now we are enjoying the house of our dreams.” - Arion and Tasha “.... no other new home has the quality that CB Burkholder provides. From start to finish the customer service is outstanding. We love our new home as does everyone who steps into our home. We would recommend CB Burkholder to anyone looking for a new home.” - Grant and Diane ‘FALL SPECIAL’ L’

20 - MERCHANDISER - Manheim Central Edition - November 20, 2019
Taking Time To Give Thanks “Godliness with contentment is great gain,” the Apostle Paul wrote in his first letter to his protégé, Timothy, and it has become one of the most famous Bible verses about contentment. The condition of being satisfied - contented - will be one of the themes of the Gathering of Worship and Gratitude hosted by churches in the Landisville-Manor District of LMC - a fellowship of Anabaptist churches, formerly known as Lancaster Mennonite Conference, on Sunday, Nov. 24. The night of worship, reflection, prayer, and Holy Communion will be held at 7 p.m. around the tables in the fellowship hall of East Petersburg Mennonite Church, 6279 Main St., East Petersburg. Anyone interested in pausing during the busy holiday season is welcome to attend. In addition to contentment, the evening will explore commitment. The Gathering of Worship and Gratitude is the result of the collaboration of Millersville Mennonite Church, Marietta Community Chapel, Mountville Mennonite Church, and East Petersburg Mennonite Church. Worship will be led by a team that is made up of representatives from each church, with the pastoral leaders in each church community also filling various roles throughout the night. Refreshments will be provided. There is no cost to attend. A schedule for the evening has been posted on the sharable event page, which may be found by visiting Facebook and searching for “Gathering of Worship and Gratitude: A Thanksgiving Gathering.” Readers may also learn more by emailing eastpetemc@gmail.com or calling 717-569-9931.
