CHRISTMAS LETTERS

Santa Claus invites children of the community to send their Christmas wish lists to him at the North Pole. To receive a return letter from Santa, each child must include his or her name and address. Wish lists can be sent to Santa Claus, c/o The North Pole, Manheim Post Office, 47 S. Main St., Manheim, PA 17545. Letters can also be taken to the post office and placed in the box provided in the lobby area.

Students at Manheim Central High School (MCHS) have been busy preparing to present “A Christmas Story,” a two-act stage play written by Philip Grecian in 2000 as an adaptation of the classic 1983 holiday movie. Performances are slated for 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29, and 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 30, and Saturday, Dec. 1, in the MCHS auditorium at 400 E. Adele Ave., Manheim. Separate ticket prices have been set for adults and students for the Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 shows, and admission to the performance on Nov. 29 will be “pay what you can afford.” All tickets will be sold at the door. “Getting to do this show actually means a lot to me because this is my dad’s favorite movie of all time. He was the first person I called when I got the

role,” said TJ Faulkner, who will play young Ralphie Parker in the performance for the student body on Wednesday, Nov. 28, and in the Friday evening show. Luke Weaver will play Ralphie during the Thursday and Saturday shows, and several other characters have been double-cast for the Wednesday/Friday and Thursday/Saturday showings. Adult Ralph will be played by Taylor Hawkins. “A Christmas Story” centers on Ralphie and his lone Christmas wish for a BB gun - something that everyone, even a department store Santa Claus, is quick to tell him is a terrible idea. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, Ralphie endures relentless teasing and antagonizing from his brother Randy, who will be played by Aiden Ryan. School bully Scut Farkus, portrayed by Mason Bard, also gives Ralphie a run for his money. See “A Christmas Story” pg 10

Manheim Central High School students, including (from left) Branden Rounds, TJ Faulkner, Aiden Ryan, and Nickea Metzler, will perform “A Christmas Story” on Nov. 29 to Dec. 1.

York radio station WOV in December 1942. Johnson noted that the characters in the radio show work day jobs in addition to broadcasting the show at night and are normal people through and through, as opposed to big stars. “It really is an ensemble show,” added Johnson. The performances will also mark the end of an era for SSC, as “The 1940s Radio Hour” is slated to be the final production that takes place at the theater company’s current location. Shows for the 2019 season are slated to be performed in the group’s new space at 133 W. “It’s sad, but I’m also really looking forward to the new place, so it’s definitely bittersweet,” said cast member Beth Gable of the impending change. Beth and her husband, Kent Gable, are enjoying the opportunity to play opposite each other as girlfriend and boyfriend Connie Miller and B.J. Gibson. Plus, Beth’s father, Steve Sturgis, will portray the sometimes obnoxious and pompous stage manager Lou Cohn. Sturgis is no stranger to SSC, having performed in more than a dozen shows, including the company’s inaugural performance, “The Music Man,” 10 years ago. “This show has a lot of 1940s big band music, which is the stuff that I grew up listening to and really like,” said Sturgis. “The music is all done well with tight harmony, and it’s a lot of fun to sing. If you’re singing music you enjoy, it’ll come across to the audience.” Gene Ellis, who will play WOV station manager Clifton Feddington, agreed and emphasized that the outstanding quality of the music will likely be what wows audiences the most. “It’s interesting having a nostalgic theme, and the music is just really, really beautiful,” stated Ellis. Kevin Conti will grace the SSC stage for the 11th time as Wally Ferguson, a young aspiring performer from Altoona who moved to New York to catch his big break. “I love playing this character. He’s probably one of my favorite characters I’ve ever played,” Conti said. “He’s very similar to me, and he’s from Altoona and that’s where my mom’s family is from.” Other cast members include Dale Boyer as Pops Bailey, Steve Hassinger as Zoot Doubleman, Joe Kelly as Johnny Cantone, Chrissy Nickel as Ginger Brooks, Nathan Todd as Neal Tilden, Alecia Hair as Ann Collier, Andrea Amos as Geneva Lee Browne, and Josh Kulp as Biff Baker.

Haunted Lantern Tour To Return With “Mortality Within” in” By Chelsea Peifer

Sara Mimnall and Rebecca Wright chose the theme of “Mortality Within” for Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour this year because they wanted to introduce people to a not-often-talked-about aspect of the rivertown’s history. The theme will focus on the disease and poverty that struck Columbia and other communities in earlier days, discussing the presence of pesthouses and sanitariums and how much things have changed. “It shows how people suffered more than they had to because they didn’t have the

like we do now,” noted Mimnall. “It will also touch on the Great Depression and how the lack of food (and resources) can change people,” Wright added. Popular characters from past years will also reappear, Wright said, such as William Campbell, a local trapper who died from rabies and is buried in Columbia’s historic Mount Bethel Cemetery. History abounds in the cemetery and the town, and according to Mimnall and Wright, while spooky elements are intertwined on the tour, history is indeed the emphasis. The hourlong guided tours will take place on Friday and Saturday

John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 23 S. Sixth St., Columbia. Tours will step off every half hour beginning at 6:30 p.m., with the last tour starting at 9:30 p.m. Participants will follow guides to Locust Street and through a loop in the Mount Bethel Cemetery before returning to the church. To purchase tickets, interested individuals may call 717-517-2442. A specific tour time will be designated when tickets are reserved. Organizers strongly encourage people to order tickets in advance. A limited number of tickets may be available on the night of the tours but are not

Mai-Lynn Sahd, executive director of Brittany’s Hope, explained that funds raised through Christmas at the Star Barn Village will go toward building an adaptive living facility for children with disabilities in Vietnam. According to Sahd, Brittany’s Hope has been working with Ha Tinh Village, an orphanage located in a remote rural region of northern Vietnam, to help provide basic living needs for more than 50 abandoned children. Currently, the orphanage has a separate area for children with profound mental and/or physical disabilities. Sahd noted that in Vietnam, children with disabilities can be left with nowhere to go and nowhere to find dignity. The portion of Ha Tinh Village devoted to housing children with disabilities is in need of upgrades, and Brittany’s Hope has pledged $100,000 to build a facility specifically designed for those with special needs at Ha Tinh Village. Plans for the new facility include a safe living space and bedrooms for up to 28 children, specialized adaptive furniture and bathrooms, a fully equipped physical therapy room, and a common area for the children to move and play. The funds will also allow for trained professionals to

At the campout, the girls hiked, did crafts, learned outdoor cooking skills, and enjoyed recreational activities. The event was organized by troop leaders and girls in the Pioneer and Patriot levels. Outdoor gear used at the campout, such as tents, a cook stove and fryer with accessories, and a medical kit, was provided by a grant that was awarded to the troop through Cabela’s Outdoor Fund, a nonprofit organization dedicated to efforts that promote and protect hunting, shooting sports, trapping, fishing, camping, and conservation. American Heritage Girls is a Christ-centered scouting program for girls ages 5 to 18 that seeks to develop the whole child physically, mentally, and spiritually. Girls earn badges by doing age-appropriate activities in diverse areas of interest, including outdoor skills, family living, arts, and science and technology. Barons Top Cedar Cliff, Advance To District Final

found receiver Colby Wagner, on a hitch-and-go, for a 49-yard TD with 34 seconds left before intermission. Wagner (4 catches, 114 yards) caught the ball on the Barons’ sideline at the 11-yard line, cut back inside and raced to the end zone to help put Manheim up 21-7, scoring twice in the last minute before halftime. “We kind of thought we could beat the corner back on the weak side and Colby just made a great play,” Hahn said. “The second touchdown was more or less, a minute left, and I just wanted to be aggressive and we’ve practiced that onside (kick) and I just wanted to get after them and that’s what we did.” “We saw that they were switching and the corner would stay down,” said Rivers, who had two catches for 53 yards. “I just go on a quick out and stop like I was not getting the ball and go again and just use my speed to get down the sideline. A hitch and go.” “They were crucial,” Simon said about the two TDs before halftime. “We scored two times in 20 seconds. We saw it on film throughout the week. There were certain guys we could take advantage when we needed to.” About those two sides to Simon: One minute Simon, a junior, is talking about taking about advantage he saw on film, the Xs and Os that led to two quick scores before halftime. The next moment he’s talking about making up plays in the huddle to help

Central score a 36-yard TD to give the Barons some breathing room in what was a one-point game (21-20). “It really wasn’t a design play,” Wagner said about his second TD catch, the one that helped the Barons pull away 28-20. “Evan just told me to run up the field and he’d chuck it. I just jumped up and got it.” It was sort of a play-ground play. “Yeah it was, kinda,” Simon said, with a smirk, after throwing his 51st career TD pass. “He (Wagner) was my third read. They (Cedar Cliff) took away my first two options. I was like bang, bang, Bang!” Sort of Brett Farve-like. One minute the gunslinger. The next the Aaron-Rogers tactician. “He just got confident and started throwing more,” Wagner said about Simon, who finished the game completing 9 of 22 passes for 232 yards. Before the game was over, the Barons knocked out two Cedar Cliff quarterbacks. Starter Chris Dare left with an ankle injury in the first quarter and was replaced by Bobby Whalen, who ran wild on the Central’s defense, rushing for 152 yards. The Barons’ D eventually figured out how to contain him and he wobbled off field with an apparent injury and was replaced at QB for Cliff’s last two possessions late in the fourth quarter. “When 12 (Dare) got hurt we knew there would be a change at

tackles (five solo, three assists). Three plays later, on a third-and-3 from the Cedar Cliff 36, Simon “chucked it up” to Wagner, who leaped in the air and pulled the ball in at the 10 and raced into the end zone and the Barons never looked back. Simon, who rushed for 35 yards on 11 carries, added his second rushing TD on a 10-yard run and Chris Shaw darted down the left sideline for a 29-yard score to close out a 21-point fourth quarter outburst. “There are many ups and downs in a game,” said Harbach, who had 8 tackles (3 solo, 5 assists). “We like to call it Manheim Magic around here. “We’ve been in a couple of games like that this year. We think we are pretty good at overcoming adversity and Coach Hahn preaches that. We know that we are going to be up sometimes and we know we are going to be down, but it is just making plays, get us back in a game and get our rhythm going. We are never out of it.” Down, but never out of it. Simon said the Barons enjoy games like this. They trailed earlier this year against Hempfield, Wilson, Warwick and Cocalico and rallied to win. “We just handle adversity very well this year,” Simon said. “I think that goes on, respect to the coaches, keeping our heads in the game.” Back to those two sides of Simon. There’s the fun-loving side that fist bumps an 8-year-old boy (making the little boy’s night) and signs a photograph of himself for an adult. There’s also the responsible side, making sure a visitor knows that he and the other underclassman would not be playing in the district final without the senior leadership. “The seniors, they guided us here,” he said. “We won the section, 10-0, and we are headed back to another district championship game and these seniors have been through this before, winning one last year and they’ve put us underclassman in an unbelievable position in practice, whether it is, ‘get your act together, you are not working hard enough’ They have just been amazing. We are blessed to have the group like we have. They’ve been crucial on this journey.” A journey with many peaks and valleys.

quarterback,” defensive end Jack Harbach said. “Coach put a good game plan together. It just took us a while to execute. Obviously, we were game planning for number 12 all week. Once we got it rolling, we got pressure on him (Whalen) and made him scramble a lot. Our D-line, once we got contain on him, we started making plays on him.” Speaking of the “D,” Tyler Flick was all over the field and made several big stops when it looked like Whalen and running back Jaheim Morris were about to break free for large gains. Flick, Central’s all-time leading rusher, was held to 28 yards on 12 carries, but he used his energy on D, collecting 10 tackles (three solo and seven assists). When Dare was in the game, the Barons D forced three straight punts. Cedar Cliff had starting field positions of its own 9, 7 and 16 yard lines on three straight possessions. Then Simon was hit while throwing and his pass was intercepted. The Colts took over on their own 48, their best field position at that point in the game. They scored four plays later to take a 7-6 lead with 4:40 left in the second quarter. Trailing 21-7, Cedar Cliff got the ball to start the second half and slowly marched down the field, capping a 15-play, 89-yard scoring drive with a 3-yard run by Whalen that took nearly eight minutes off the clock to start the third quarter. After Central’s fourth punt on the night, the Colts scored on a 5-play drive when Whalen ran up the middle for a 14-yard TD. They missed the extra point to keep Central up 21-20 with 1:08 remaining in the third. The Barons only ran six plays in third quarter. After punting for the fifth time, Cedar Cliff was driving and momentum was clearly on the side of the Colts. Trailing 21-20 on a third-and-11 from the Colts’ 42, Whalen threw a screen pass and had a wide open receiver, running back Morris, who would have the first down and likely a big gain with open field, but Rivers at cornerback, reached back and tipped the ball, forcing an incompletion and a Cedar Cliff punt. “We were doing a blitz and I came in and I was not expecting the back to come out on a flat route and I just got lucky that he threw it kind of low and I was able to tip it out of his (Morris) reach,” said Rivers, who had eight

On the football field, there are two sides to quarterback Evan Simon’s game. One moment he’s 1-for-8 and 2-for-7 passing with two interceptions and the next moment he’s 3-for-4 with 103 yards passing and two touchdowns in 20 seconds. That’s the way things went for Simon and the Barons Saturday night in the District Class 5A semifinals at Manheim, a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde performance and a 42-20 victory against Cedar Cliff. The Barons (12-0) are going back to the district championship, where they will seek their 18th district crown. They will meet Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Two rival Cocalico in the final set for Friday, Nov. 23 at a location to be determined. Central beat Cocalico earlier this season, rallying for a 41-23 triumph on Sept. 28 in Denver. Saturday’s district semifinal game, which was delayed a day because of snow, only postponed the eventual outcome: A Barons’ victory and trip back to the district finals. But the victory, a rollercoaster ride with many ups and downs, was far from easy. “In any championship caliber game like this there are peaks and valleys and you just have to maintain your

composure, which I thought we did a good job of,” head coach Dave Hahn said. “We didn’t let the peaks get too high for us and we didn’t let the valleys get too low for us. We constantly talk about composure.” Central started off strong, taking the opening kickoff and marching 72 yards on 10 plays (nine runs), capped by a 1-yard run by Simon. The extra point was blocked. Manheim went into a funk on offense and defense, punting twice and throwing two straight interceptions and allowing the Colts to take a 7-6 lead, an advantage it appeared Cedar Cliff would take into halftime before Central noticed an advantage, exposed it and put the hammer down. On a third-and-9 from the Cedar Cliff 39 and with 50 seconds remaining in the half, Simon pump faked and then lofted a pass down the Central sideline and receiver Will Rivers hauled it in at the 14 and raced into the end zone. Simon connected with tight end Landan Moyer over the middle for the two.point conversion and a 14-7 Manheim lead. After the TD, the Barons recovered their onside kick and one play later Simon, with great time form his offensive line, stepped up in the pocket and

“A Christmas Story” from pg 1 “One of my favorite things about this show is that Scut Farkus is played by my best friend in real life,” noted TJ. Rehearsing the fighting scenes between Ralphie and Scut has been a blast for TJ and Mason. Nickea Metzler, who will portray Mother in the Wednesday/Friday performances, said that she was not familiar with “A Christmas Story” before it was announced as this year’s fall play. “I actually didn’t know the story before, but it really gets you into the holiday spirit,” commented Nickea. “This show will definitely appeal to families and to younger audiences. We hope everyone will enjoy it regardless of their perspective on the movie.” “Everyone is pretty passionate about what they’re portraying and embodies their character really well on and off stage,” said Nickea. The MCHS students have a few traditions for their shows, such as saying a prayer together backstage before opening night and going to

a local diner together as a cast after the Friday night show. “This cast is supportive of each other, and we all help each other to make this show the best it can be,” TJ stated. Other cast members include Branden Rounds, Rebecca Mylin, Tenaya Metzler, Elise Deppen, Nate Gerhart, Ivan Rivera, Dominick Bonanno, Savannah Heisey, Nina Bonanno, Ligeia Stern, Abby Miller, Larissa Stern, Audrey Cressler, Francesca McClure, Jasmine Shirk, Maddie Kreider, Madeline Radovic, Sarah Rhodes, Julianna Gingrich, Sabina Ortiz, Olivia Walters, Timothy Bartsch, Benjamin Gingrich, Karissa Wenger, Chris Lynes, Ezekiel Ruffner, Brooke Barnes, Brendon Bruhn, Adrian Ryan, Sydney Heisey, Rachel Hollinger, Amy Dombach, Margot Shearn, Alexis Deck, Krysta Harris, Janelle Harris, and Ashley Maymi. The North Museum of Nature and Science, 400 College Ave., Lancaster, will debut its latest show, “Cosmic Journeys - Destination Mars” on Wednesday, Nov. 21, at 1:30 p.m. The original 35- to 40-minute show is the creation of Penn Manor High School sophomore Tommy Hockenberry, who volunteers in the museum’s planetarium on a regular basis. Tommy proposed his concept for the show last January and is debuting the show to coincide with the Mars landing of NASA spacecraft InSight, set for Monday, Nov. 26. Tommy will be on hand to narrate and present the show himself on Nov. 21. The show will continue at the museum on weekends through the holiday season and until Sunday, Feb. 24, 2019, with Tommy narrating as his schedule allows. Tommy originally came to the museum for a summer camp in 2013. While there, he met senior astronomy educator Mike “Cosmic Mike” Smith, who led the campers through a program titled “Cosmic Mike’s Mission to the Red Planet,” which focused on NASA’s Curiosity Rover. It was this encounter that sparked Tommy’s interest in Mars and has led to him creating a planetarium show. He plans to pursue a career in aerospace engineering.
