Basketball in her hands, Dakota Nesbitt races down the court, dodging opponents on her way to the basket. As Dakota navigates the drill during basketball practice, she’s on a roll - literally.
The 7-year-old second-grader at Bucher Elementary School in the Manheim Township School District is a member of a newly formed wheelchair basketball team. The team, coached by Keith McMinn, practices on Friday nights at Spooky Nook Sports, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim.
Keith held the first practice in October, and so far, the team has about 15 players, ranging in age from 7 to 17. They come from Lancaster, Harrisburg and York.
Keith saw the benefits of basketball firsthand when his daughter, Samantha, joined a wheelchair basketball team in Maryland, where they used to live. “She’s been playing since she was 6 years old,” Keith said, of his now-21-year-old daughter. “The sport changed the trajectory of her life.”
Keith and his wife, Sandy, noticed that being a part of the team helped Samantha increase her selfesteem, expanded her social life and led to academic improvement.
Originally from this area, Keith and Sandy moved back when Keith took a job as the director of Life Lion at Penn State Health. A retired Maryland state trooper,
Keith had coached basketball and baseball before, and he knew local kids would benefit from a wheelchair basketball team, especially since Samantha’s team had players who traveled from Pennsylvania to participate. He connected with Janetta Green of the Center for Independent Living of Central Pennsylvania, which is sponsoring the team.
There is currently no cost for participants thanks to a sponsor who is covering court time at Spooky Nook. It’s an expensive sport to play, however, since players use special wheelchairs with cambered wheels for improved maneuverability. Each chair costs
about $5,000, Keith said. He has been able to purchase some and some players have received chairs through grants, but the team is looking for sponsors to purchase more chairs.
For many of the players, this is their first experience in the sport chairs. “It’s a game-changer for them once they get in one of these chairs,” Keith commented. “Their faces just light up.”
For almost all of the players, it’s also their first time playing basketball.
“No experience is needed,” said Sara Echegoyen, a junior at Manheim Central High School. “You don’t have to be a great basketball player. Everyone is really nice and supportive. I’ve enjoyed meeting new people and just having fun.”

Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development held a ceremonial groundbreaking for a large construction project on Oct. 13 and officially began construction on Nov. 14. The project will include a 14,700square-foot addition and reno-
vation of Schreiber’s current facility.
The multimillion-dollar project will allow Schreiber Pediatric to offer a greater range of services to a larger number of children in the area with special needs and reduce the likelihood that patients will be placed on a waiting list for critical treatment. “We have waitlists that can be up to two years long. If a child has to wait that long to walk or speak, they may not overcome their challenges if their needs aren’t met in a timely manner,” said James DeBord, president of Schreiber Pediatric. “This new space will be a game changer; it will mean that more children will be able to walk, speak and live out their dreams like any other child.”
The project is estimated to take 15 to 16 months to complete and will wrap up in early 2024. The addition will be completed in the project’s first phase, followed by the building renovations in the second phase. The key benefits to the larger space include allowing Schreiber Pediatric to treat 500 more children a year and the ability to hire over a dozen new therapists to meet the increasing demand. The addition will include a new department for physical therapy, and the cur-
Children and adults alike celebrated at the Oct. 13 groundbreaking for the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development’s construction project.
rent physical therapy department will be converted into a facility for traumatic brain injury treatment. Upgrades will also be made to the occupational therapy department.
DeBord said the largest obstacle in the last 10 years is keeping Schreiber Pediatric financially independent and stable. “Most organizations don’t touch behavioral therapy because it loses money,” said DeBord said. Most therapy services are reimbursed through health care programs like Medicaid, meaning there is little profit in the field. Nevertheless, DeBord and Schreiber Pediatric have remained committed to making behavioral therapy services available to the community. The organiza-
tion began changing the way funds were raised and initiating more philanthropic efforts, as well as bringing in more therapy staff to reduce waitlists. After running out of room to host all of its patients and staff, Schreiber Pediatric began drawing up the plan for the expansion project.
Although Schreiber Pediatric has been able to raise a portion of the necessary funds, it still requires money to cover its regular yearly expenses on top of the project expenses. “No one else is doing what we do, and we’re committed to making sure we can do it. This project will allow us to,” said DeBord. For more information or to make a donation, visit www.schreiberpediatric.org.

Wonder, amazement and joy all live in the lower level of the Elizabethtown Public Library for several weeks in November and December. Those are just some of the emotions Craig Coble witness-
es when people come to see the display laid out by The Train Guys.
“For the kids, it’s a lot of big-eyed wonderment at things they’ve never seen before,” said Coble. “The expressions I get to see on the kids’ faces are great. And then
the older crowd gets misty eyed, remembering trains from their childhood.”
For the first time since 2019, The Train Guys will operate their display at the library, 10 S. Market St., beginning on Tuesday, Nov. 29, from 6 to 7 p.m. “That night coincides with the Elizabethtown Christmas tree lighting, so people can come see the trains when they come to that,” Coble noted. “And it’s also our first responders’ night, so we’re inviting all first responders to come see the trains.”
The Train Guys begin setting up the layouts in midOctober, Coble explained,
noting that the core group includes about 20 volunteers.
“One of things that sets us apart is we have 50 push buttons throughout the room that people can use to start trains and operate accessories,” Coble stated.
He noted that the group sets up the display not just to entertain visitors, but also to support the library. “Most of the folks in our group have a strong incentive to give back to our community,” he shared, noting that proceeds from suggested donations for admission as well as a silent auction and giveaway drawing at the display benefit the library.
As visitors enter the display from the hallway, they can enjoy a circus and amusement park scene, and they’ll be greeted by costumed characters, including a railroad hobo, police officer and engineer.
Once inside the room, they’ll see a display that features up to 20 trains running at once, through everything from urban to rural landscapes. “We even have dignitaries who visit from time to time,” Coble said, pointing out Laurel and Hardy waiting on a train platform.
Elizabethtown’s past can be found throughout the layout, including the old schoolhouse that now houses the Elizabethtown Historical Society and a ballfield replica of the one used by the Klein Chocolate Company team. One area of the display features standard-gauge trains, which Coble pointed out are very unusual to see in operation. “We only bring these out about every three years or
so,” he stated. “These train cars are up to 100 years old.” The display ends with gardenscale trains set up on the floor on an indoor/outdoor carpet.
For Jack Messick, 8, who helped his grandfather work on setting up the layout, the trains offer entertainment and fun. “I like pushing the buttons,” he said. “I like the lightup stuff and I like watching the trains run. It’s just cool.”
The Train Guys will operate the display on Tuesdays and Thursdays in December from 6 to 7:30 p.m. as well as from 5 to 7 p.m. on Second Friday, Dec. 9. The display will also operate on Saturdays, Dec. 3, 10 and 17, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., when a shuttle will be offered between the library display and a train display at Masonic Village. Armold Rushes 250 yards in Barons District 3 Win
BY ERIC PYLES
In most football games it takes a bit before one side can seize control, that was not the case for Manheim Central and their November 11th clash with York Suburban. It took all of one play, the first play from scrimmage, for Central to flex their dominance in the form of a 65-yard untouched dash by Brycen Armold. A holding penalty on the Barons negated that run but the message was sent, it would be Armold & Manheim Central’s night.
By the time the scoreboard clock hit all zeros, Central had cruised to a 63-14 win, the team’s 60th District 3 victory and Armold had racked up 250 yards rushing on 21 carries, six of which ended with the junior standing in the endzone. Fel-
low junior Zac Hahn added 152 yards passing with two more touchdowns, giving Manheim a whopping 558 yards of offense. Jaden Weit helped round out the 406-yard rushing night with 105 yards and one last touchdown one three carries.
The Baron offense, behind Armold, did end that first drive with a touchdown, only this one was from five yards out. Armold added two more TD runs in the opening frame, one from seven yards and another from 46 yards, to give Manheim Central a 21-0 lead just 12 minutes into the game.
Hahn took over for a bit, picking up both his TD tosses in the second quarter. The first went to Rocco Dougherty (two catches - 44 yards) for a 44yard score while Bode Sipe
(four catches - 85 yards) covered 58 yards for the second. The Trojans busted up Central’s shutout when Rylan Bratton hooked up with Alex Kefauver for a lighting quick 84-yard score and a 28-7 game.
Armold regained his perch at the controls, closing out the first half with TDs run of 41 and 27 yards, pushing the lead to 49-7. The action cooled in the second half thanks to the running clock but Armold was able to pick up one last score, a 41-yard scoot that made it 567. Suburban slipped their second TD of the game into the third quarter with Bratton hitting Dakota Shue for a 66-yard score. Manheim tacked on one last score when Weit broke free, covering 80 of his 105 yards on the way to the endzone.

Tickets are available for a discount in advance and may be purchased from any member of the Women’s Club or at Longeneckers True Value, Shaub’s Dry Cleaning or Divine Consign. Dakota’s dad, Drew, said he loves watching his daughter on the court. “She’s a little bit competitive, and she loves to go fast,” he said, noting that Dakota used to travel to Maryland to play, but he’s happy to have a team closer to home. “This is a phenomenal outlet for her. It’s opened up a lot of doors for her.”
Keith spends part of each practice going over basketball drills and rules while encouraging each player to understand what he or she brings to the team. He plans to
begin playing games against other teams in February, starting with the team in Maryland.
He noted that much more is happening on the court than just a sport. “We try to teach life skills - independence, focus, teamwork, sportsmanship,” Keith remarked. “We emphasize that this is about fun and fitness. The basketball is a bonus.”
For more information on the team, contact Keith at 443-829-2460 or kmcminn@ pennstatehealth.psu.edu.

“This is a great day to get out and get into the Christmas spirit,” said Jason Spickler, describing the Marietta Candlelight Tour of Homes. “You can do some shopping, do some sightseeing and see some beautiful decorating techniques and get inspiration from them.” The tour will be held on Sunday, Dec. 4, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
This is the 56th year for the event, which is sponsored by Marietta Restoration Associates (MRA). This year’s tour will feature eight private homes as well as a local artist showcase, holiday marketplaces and more.
“We try to have a variety of different types of homes, some older and more historical and some newer,” said Spickler, who is co-chair of the tour with Rebecca Baltozer. “We have a couple of
homes featured on the tour that have never been on the tour before.”
Both of the public buildings that MRA supports - the Old Town Hall Museum and the Union Meeting Housewill be open during the tour as well. “The Union Meeting House will feature displays from Elizabethtown College
that focus on Marietta,” Spickler noted.
At Marietta Center for the Arts, a Dickens Christmas Market and Grog Shop, featuring handmade home décor, refreshments and live music, will operate the same hours as the tour. MH Art Gallery and Studio will showcase “Small Town Glow,” original works inspired by small-town life, during the tour. Marietta Community House will host a vendor market, and Pioneer Fire Company No. 1 will hold a chicken and waffles dinner, Spickler said.
This year’s tour will also feature a collection of Nativity scenes from members of the community. If people are interested in lending a display to share during the tour, they may contact Traci at 717-979-8521 or pastor tri1016@gmail.com.
Spickler emphasized that not only does the tour offer a way to see creative decorating, but it also raises funds for MRA. The organization works to preserve and protect the history of Marietta.
“The tour is just a great community day in Marietta,” Spickler said. “It’s a way to bring everyone together to enjoy the town, to see some unique decorations and to have fun.”
Advance tickets are available for a discount. Tickets may also be purchased on the day of the tour at Donegal Intermediate School, 1177 River Road; Old Town Museum, 3 W. Walnut St.; and First National Escape Bank, 100 W. Market St. Parking and shuttle bus service will be available at all three locations. Soccer Team Raises Funds For Cancer Research
The Lancaster Mennonite (LM) boys’ varsity soccer team recently joined with area L-L League soccer teams wearing shirts in support of the Red Card Cancer initiative. L-L League schools and families donated to support the cause, and local teams wore the shirts during warm-ups all week to do the same. Red Card Cancer is a nonprofit in partnership with the American Cancer Society, committed to raising money and awareness for cancer research.
LM joined the initiative in memory of the late Nathan Longenecker, a former LM student and boys’ soccer player who died a year ago following an eight-month battle with brain cancer. Lynn Longenecker, Nathan’s father, noted that Nathan received his cancer diagnosis in the spring of his freshman year of college. “It was the most powerless feeling to see the disease take over and destroy his healthy 19-year-old body and know that no one knew how to stop it,” said Lynn.
“Thanks to the school (LM), team, and the Red Card Cancer campaign for helping support research to better understand this terrible disease. It won’t bring Nathan back, but will hopefully help make better outcomes possible for others in the future.” Nathan’s brother, Jesse, a junior, is a current member of the LM team.
The LM team also participated in honor of LM teacher and boys’ soccer goalie coach Jim Amstutz’s brother, Pete, who is currently fighting Stage 4 glioblastoma brain cancer. Pete and his wife live in Goshen, Ind.
“Being so far apart, I sometimes feel helpless in knowing how to be supportive. This was something my family and I could do to stand with Pete and the Longenecker family,” said Jim. He also noted that when he was a men’s soccer coach at Bluffton University, Pete was the team manager.
The soccer team, together with LM Soccer Booster Club and the LM Advancement office, raised $800 in support of Red Card Cancer.

“We wanted to share a tool to reach visual learners,” said Jeremy Miller, founder and CEO of Poiema Visual Arts. “The activity has the potential to greatly impact creatives. For the analytical, they can take written notes, and those who don’t want to participate have nothing to worry about, as the services haven’t changed at all.” Some churches elected to participate on one specific Sunday that aligned with their schedules in October, and others participated every Sunday of the month.
Poiema Visual Arts began by sending over 200 letters that invited churches to participate, and seven churches across four different counties stepped forward to use the technique. Miller noted that one participating church expressed a desire to integrate Sketch It! Sundays more frequently and asked about other creatively guided opportunities for its congregants. A member of Poiema’s board of directors, who is a pastor at a church that utilized the program, said she was pleasantly surprised at the number of church members who participated and were excited to share their artwork after the service.
“I’m a pastor myself, and we like it when people look up at us during the service, but when that person leaves with that enthusiasm and realizes that this is an option for them to continue learning, what we’ve done is create a disciple of Christ,” said Miller. Miller has a background in the arts and Christian education, and for several years he struggled to combine his passion for art with his Christian faith.
Over two decades ago, Miller taught at Lancaster Bible College and first began to dream of creating a place for visual artists to engage with Scripture. He started laying the foundation for what he
called “biblical creative theology,” as his life took him down many different paths. Miller spent time teaching overseas, attended seminary in Virginia and briefly lived in Texas before returning to Lancaster County. As his sons grew older, Miller realized that he needed a new direction, as he would no longer need to homeschool them. “(God) gave me permission to take that box of metaphorical dreams off of the shelf and go through them,” said Miller.
Poiema Visual Arts was officially incorporated and opened its membership program in October 2021. The organization is currently based in
Strasburg but is involved with churches across the county and beyond, including areas such as Hempfield, Manheim Township and York.
