the Friends, who added, “He’ll be joined by an elf, who is Andrea Black, our library director, and there will be a naughty or nice book to sign, and kids always get a little treat from Santa.” Holiday-themed children’s books will be spotlighted at the event’s book sale, which will also include a wide of variety of titles for adults and children. “We have bestselling authors and lots of high-quality books,” Barrick noted, adding that the books make great low-cost

Christmas gifts. Holiday Crossings will also feature a gift shop full of handmade and unique items, as well as a giveaway basket drawing. “Manheim businesses have donated items, and there are a variety of themed baskets,” Barrick stated. “The baskets are perfect to give for Christmas if you win one.” The Friends will also operate a Cozy Café during the event, featuring hot food and drinks. Next door to the event, the Manheim Historical Society will feature its miniature train display during Holiday Crossings. “It’s really cool,” Barrick noted. “It’s been customized to Manheim, and it’s really something to see.” Holiday Crossings is an opportunity for the Friends to recognize members and recruit new ones, Barrick said. A specially commissioned Friends of the Manheim Community Library holiday ornament will be available for members who give at the Patron level or higher. “This is their day to come pick up their handblown Stiegel Glassworks holiday ornament,” Barrick explained. “It’s a special edition every year, and the design will be revealed at the event.” She noted that the Friends have a goal of 250 members. Money raised by the group is used to support operations of the library, purchase books and fill in funding gaps. “We have committed to raising $30,000 a year that goes directly to the library for their budget shortage,” she remarked. Barrick said Holiday Crossings is the perfect opportunity to pick up some Christmas gifts and kick off the holiday season. “It’s beautifully decorated, and it’s really festive,” she stated. “This will also be the first event the train station has been open for since it closed at the beginning of the pandemic.” For more information on Holiday Crossings, visit https:// manheimlibrary.org.

Let There Be Lights BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Remember when you were a kid and Mom and Dad would pile everybody into the car to go look at Christmas lights? The Women’s Club of Manheim is hoping to bring back that nostalgia with its outdoor lighting display tour. “We typically have an indoor house tour of homes decorated for the holidays, but we didn’t do that last year due to COVID,” explained Linda Karns, chair of the tour. With this year still uncertain in terms of indoor events, the club decided to See Lights pg 3

Mennonite Life, formerly Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society, will host author Donald B. Kraybill on Thursday, Dec. 9, at 7 p.m. The event will take place in the Community Room at the Collections Building, the former historical society building, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster. Kraybill, a professor emeritus at Elizabethtown College, has authored dozens of books on Amish life and culture. He is also a senior fellow at the Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies. His first book, “The Riddles of Amish Culture,” was influenced by the interest in the Amish generated by the 1984 Hollywood film “ Witness” starring Harrison Ford. He also co-wrote a book with Steven M. Nolt and David L. Weaver-Zercher called “Amish Grace: How Forgiveness Transcended Tragedy” about the Nickel Mines shooting in 2006 and how Amish families forgave the perpetrator. His newest book, “What the Amish Teach Us,” is a collection of 22 short essays that infuse storytelling with informational reflections. Each essay shares a lesson that the author has learned from the Amish. Subjects include community, faith, technology, apprenticeship, entrepreneurship, and aging in place. Copies of “What the Amish Teach Us” will be available for purchase at the event. Kraybill will sign books after the presentation. “Serious Socks for Not So Serious People!”

The holiday season presents various fire risks as homes are lit with Christmas lights and candles and people cook seasonal dishes on the stove. To diminish the fire risks associated with the festive season, people may take the following steps. First, electrical outlets should not be overtaxed. Electrical circuits are designed to handle a limited amount of electricity, and exceeding the rated load for the circuit wiring causes the circuit breaker to trip, shutting off the power to the entire circuit. Christmas lighting adds to the overall fire risk unless used correctly. Extension cords should be used only when necessary. Second, cables should never

be run underneath carpets. If sockets on one side of the room are in use, individuals should not be tempted to run cables from another socket underneath a rug or carpet. When people walk over the cables, they compress and break down the cables’ insulation, increasing the fire risk. Third, candles should be positioned away from decorations. Placing candles around the Christmas tree may add to the festive décor, but this practice is not safe. Candles should always be placed on a stable surface away from the tree, decorations, and soft furnishings. It is important that candles never be left unattended, and lighters should be put away after being used. After

lighting candles, matches should be allowed to cool in a metal or ceramic dish before they are thrown away. Fourth, candles should be swapped for LED versions. Faux candles are a great substitute for the real thing if someone lives in a home with young children and pets who could potentially knock them over. Fifth, the tree should not be placed close to a heat source, including a fireplace or heat vent. The heat will dry out the tree, causing it to be more easily ignited by heat, flame, or sparks. Smokers should be careful not to drop or flick cigarette ashes near a tree. A real tree should not be put up too early or left up for longer than two weeks.

Historical Society, Museum Post Name Changes Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society has changed its name to Mennonite Life to welcome new communities and generations into Mennonite history and local history movements. The name change and rebrand signify a renewed commitment to clear communication and indicate that the organization is open to everyone. Those choosing the new name felt that Mennonite Life improves visual impact and will be easy to remember. The Mennonite Life campus on Millstream Road in Lancaster offers a Visitors Center, formerly called Mennonite Information Center, which introduces guests to Mennonites and hosts the Biblical Tabernacle Experience. In the Collections building, visitors can enjoy the Mennonite Life Museum or research using its archives and library.

CAPTIVATING “CLASSIC” NEAR MAYTOWN!

PUBLIC AUCTION

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 9

The museum in Willow Street has gone by many names, starting with The Hans Herr House. Realizing the house was built by Christian Herr, and there was no definitive documentation on whether Christian’s father, Hans, ever lived there, the name changed more than a decade ago to the 1719 Herr House & Museum. The 1719 Museum simplifies the existing name. At the 1719 Museum, visitors can immerse themselves in 18th-century life through a guided visit to the 1719 Herr House. Visitors will also learn about the history and cultures of Native Americans by experiencing a full-sized replica of an indigenous longhouse, interpreted by a guide. To learn more, including hours of operation, visit www.mennonitelife.org.

The Salvation Army Lancaster Corps kicked off its annual Red Kettle Campaign on Nov. 16. The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign is one of the largest annual fundraising events for the nonprofit organization. This year’s campaign has a fundraising goal of $120,000. The Salvation Army is preparing to serve over 6,000 individuals from the greater Lancaster area with food, toys, and winter wear. The donations received through the annual Red Kettle Campaign help to make this and yearlong Salvation Army programs possible. The campaign will end on Friday, Dec. 24. The Salvation Army Lancaster Corps is also seeking community members who will volunteer their time during the campaign and throughout the year. The Salvation Army needs businesses, groups, teams, churches, families, and individuals willing to volunteer some of their time. For more information on the Red Kettle Campaign, contact Maj. Dean Satterlee at 717397-7565 or EPA_Lancaster Citadel@use.salvationarmy.org or visit www.facebook.com/the salvationarmylancastercorps.
