The members of Ruhl’s Church invite you to journey back in time more than 2,000 years to a quiet little town called Bethlehem, where a baby who will

change the world has just been born.

The church, located at 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, will host a Drive to Bethlehem and free ham dinner on Saturday, Dec. 17, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. See Bethlehem pg 8

InSeptember of 2021, a bus carrying students from LCBC’s Manheim campus crashed on the way home from a religious retreat, seriously injuring two girls. More than a year later, the girls and their families are still working on recovery, and Carrie Bonanno wants to help. Bonanno and her family, including her husband, Adam, will host a Winter Woodland Benefit Christmas Party on Friday, Dec. 23, from 6 to 10 p.m. at The Booking House, 210 S. Penn St., Manheim.

“We’re going to have appetizers, dinner and an open bar,” Carrie said. “We’re having a DJ and dancing and a silent auction. We’ve had

a lot of different people in the community who have donated items for the auction.” The evening will also include games and a photo backdrop for Christmas photos. “We’ll have lots of winter woodland decorations, and someone is making a giant snow globe, so people can get their picture taken in that,” Carrie stated. Proceeds from the event will benefit Sara Echegoyen and Faith Wenger, both juniors at Manheim Central High School.

The Bonannos’ daughter, Belle, was on the bus as well and has been a longtime friend of both girls. Belle was also injured in the crash and is still in physical therapy. “All of the families on the bus have supported each other and been there for each other,” Carrie noted. She got the

idea for the fundraiser after witnessing what the Wenger and Echegoyen families have experienced over the past year.

“We’re very close to the Wenger family, and just seeing them go through daily life has been eyeopening,” Carrie remarked, noting that both Faith and Sara sustained spinal cord injuries in the accident. “We’re hoping to sell enough tickets to help offset some of the costs of their ongoing medical bills, adaptive equipment costs and car and home accessibility needs.” One hundred percent of ticket sales, donations and money raised at the event will go to the families, Carrie said, adding that her family will cover any costs associated with the event. She added that Rettew’s Catering

Nearly three years ago, Case Baccio, then a Bucher Elementary thirdgrade student, planned his first Clear Water for Heroes Fishing Tournament. The event raised funds to send veterans to the annual Warrior Weekend to Remember, an event that honors veterans and is sponsored by Blue Skies for the Good Guys and Gals (BS3G), the nonprofit arm of the Fastrax sky diving team. Carrie emphasized that the evening is meant to be a festive event, despite the circumstances that led to the need for it. “It’s going to be a fun night to celebrate the accomplishments of how far

the girls have come,” she said. “It’s amazing to see the faith that Sara and Faith have. They’ve been able to stay strong and stay positive, and we really want to celebrate that.”

About the time Case organized the fishing tournament, he began creating cards to send to veterans. When he entered fifth grade at Landis Run Intermediate School last year, Case asked his homeroom class to join him in making cards. This year, Case approached his math teacher, Kristin Buckwalter, about making cards for veterans to distribute for Veterans Day, Nov. 11. Buckwalter shared the idea with fellow teacher Richard Cavanagh. Cavanagh, who teaches social studies, invited the school’s population of 900 students to get involved.

To announce the project, around the middle of October, Cavanagh asked Case to make a video. In the video, Case introduces himself as a sixth-grade student and talks about the fishing tournament he organizes. He notes that he makes cards for veterans each year at this time. “I said, ‘It would be great if every (student) could make a card for a veteran,’” Case recalled,

adding, “It ignites a spark of hope in the people who get them.”

Cavanagh pointed out that in the video Case also told fellow students that cards “put a smile on a veteran’s face.”

“We forget what (veterans) went through at times,” said Cavanagh.

By Nov. 10, approximately

600 cards had been drawn, colored, and signed.

Case’s mother, Ali Bucher, looked through the cards and admired many of them. “This little girl made a special (heart-shaped) one,” she said. “A lot of these kids put a lot of effort into these cards.”

Cavanagh explained that the students were given more than paper and crayons when they were asked to do the project. “We talked about what a veteran is and what that means and what it means to veterans to get (cards),” he said.

Case and Bucher delivered some of the cards to the Manheim VFW Post prior to Veterans Day. “A lady came up (to us) crying,” recalled Bucher. “She had just lost her nephew, and she thanked Case for what he was doing.” Bucher noted that the veterans who received cards at the

post were very grateful. “They couldn’t believe he did this,” she said. In addition to the Manheim Post, Bucher and Case distributed cards at the Ephrata VFW Post, and Case spoke at the Veterans Breakfast Club, which meets in Bird-in-Hand on Nov. 19. Cards were also distributed at Mission BBQ, the Veterans Court in Lancaster, and Paramount Senior Living in Maytown.

Bucher noted that the idea reaped many rewards. “It was so heartwarming,” she said. “The kids took the time to do this and Mr. Cavanagh had them take the time to show the importance of veterans. It’s something simple that anybody can do to just say, ‘thank you.’”

Cavanagh said that he plans to continue the project with Landis Run students next year.

The prevailing thought is that football is the ultimate team game where all 11 players need to pull in the same direction in order to be successful. But on Friday November 25th Manheim Central found out that sometimes even when you go toeto-toe, it may not be enough.

Manheim battled Bishop McDevitt in the District 34A title game where the Barons were unable to slow down McDevitt’s three headed monster of Stone Saunders, Marquese Williams, and Rico Scott with the QBRB-WR trio accounting for the entirety of McDevitt’s offense and a 40-0 Crusader victory.

“You never like ending the season on a loss,” said head coach David Hahn, “but with a little time to reflect on it, we are happy with the strides we made during the year, the competitiveness we showed during the year, the improvement. The loss stings but we played a good program that has some talent.”

Tyler Groff sets up to block Bishop McDevitt’s Josiah Harding during Manheim’s 40-0 loss in the District Three Class 4A Final in Harrisburg on November 25.

The McDevitt talent that Hahn referenced was not limited to ‘the big three’ of Saunders, Williams, and Scott. “They had 11 dudes on offense and it was all 11 cause if they didn’t then it would have been a different story,” Hahn pointed out.

Those ‘11 dudes’ as Hahn called them racked up 421 yards of offense with Saunders throwing for 144 yards and two scores, Williams rushing for 181 yards and two scores plus adding one catch for 64 yards and one of Saunders passing TDs. Scott hauled in Saunders’ other passing TD and finished with four catches for 75 yards while adding 70 yards rushing and one score.

Meanwhile, Central was unable to get their offense going with their 12 possessions resulting in eight punts, two interceptions, one missed field goal and the final possession as time ran out. Add all of that up and you get just 63 yards of offense, resulting in the Barons first shutout loss since 2011.

“It was unfortunate,” said Hahn. “I think defensively

we held in there, unfortunately offensively we really couldn’t get anything started. We were challenged up front. They were getting penetration pretty much every play and that hurt us. Not being able to get our run game going made it awfully hard to get our pass game going.”

Despite the yardage discrepancy, Manheim was able to hang around through the opening quarter, but the dam broke early in the second frame with a five-yard Williams TD. A few moments later one of those two Zac Hahn interceptions was returned 67 yards for another McDevitt score. Up next was the Saunders to Scott touchdown, covering 35 yards while Williams capped the explosive second quarter with his 64-yard TD reception that gave Bishop McDevitt a 26-0 lead at the break. The final two scores came in the third stanza where Scott broke off his 70-yard run with Williams tacking on a final score from 42-yards out.

On the Central side, Brycen Armold finished

with 49 yards on 17 carries with Jaden Weit adding 25 yards on five carries. Zac Hahn completed three of his 13 attempts for 23 yards with Aaron Enterline (two catches - 12 yards) and Rocco Daugherty (one catch - 11 yards) on the receiving end.

With the 2022 season officially in the books we can look back on the Barons’ 11-2 run. “Our season as a whole, I think in all three areas of the game we got better as the season went on despite the last game,” said Hahn.

The season stats seem to back up Hahn with Manheim outscoring their opponents 623-191 over those 13 games. “Offensively it started with our skill guys,” said Hahn. “Brycen Armold did a fantastic job running the ball this year. Zac Hahn had a heck of a year throwing, and Aaron Enterline just fell short of 1000 receiving yards, that does not happen without the line and tight end, those guys had a tremendous year for us, and they came together and played well as a team and were willing to make sacrifices.”

Armold, a junior, finished with the fifth best rushing season total in L-L history,

racking up 2241 yards and 34 scores on the ground while adding 80 yards and another score through the air. Zach Hahn ended his junior season with 2200 passing yards while tossing 28 TDs against just five interceptions. Enterline, also a junior, finished with 994 receiving yards and 12 of those Zach Hahn TD tosses. Bode Sipel (41 catches619 yards, seven TDs) and Rocco Daugherty (19 catches - 231 yards, five TDs) covered the bulk of Hahn’s remaining passing stats.

“I think our defense did an outstanding job,” said coach Hahn. “Jaden Weit, Rocco Daugherty, Nick Hass, Landon McGallicher, Rolan Hoffer, Bode Sipel, Sonny Callahan, Xander Kolk, Yancy Turner, Wyatt Kupres and Kahlen Watt, we needed all of them, all 11, throughout the year, they played well.”

Hahn passed along one final thought for the season, “Our kids will be resilient, they will work hard, they will get better, and that is all I can ask of them. We have a bunch of hard-working kids that love the game, love their teammates, and will keep working to get better and be back there next year.”

When people arrive at the church, they will be greeted by a Roman centurion, who will inquire if visitors are coming to Bethlehem for the census that was decreed by Caesar Augustus. The soldier will give visitors a booklet with the Christmas story, so people can follow along through the drive. Stations will include shepherds in the field watching their flocks and angels giving glory to God. Before guests arrive at the Nativity scene, the church will offer a complete takeout dinner featuring ham, a baked potato, green beans and a dessert. The final scene will depict the three wise men bringing gifts to the baby Jesus.

“This event has been wonderfully received in the past,” said Steph Heisey, one of the organizers. “We’ve served up to 300 or 400 people.”

Beverly Snavely, who is also helping to organize the event, noted that church members portray the characters in the various scenes, complete with costumes, and that live animals are featured as well. “It’s really something to see,” she said.

Heisey stated that not only does the Drive to Bethlehem offer a free meal, but it also provides sustenance for the soul. “It’s about getting to see the Christmas story come to life and understand the true meaning of Christmas,” she said. “It’s just a neat time for families to be together.”

Reservations are required for the ham dinner and may be made by calling 717-6654499. The reservation deadline is Wednesday, Dec. 14. Anyone who wants to experience the Drive to Bethlehem without the meal may just show up on Dec. 17.

The holiday season is here, but home and business owners still have time to plan and execute an outdoor lighting display. According to Neil Brenneman of Christmas Decor of Lancaster, a franchise member of the Christmas Decor network, the key

to deocorating is having a plan. To create a plan that is right for local homeowners or businesses within a budget, he offered several pointers. Start by finding a decor focal point. Identify the property’s most attractive features - a porch, the front door,

some shrubs or a perfect treeand focus attention there with garlands, greenery and lights.

Then complete the look by enhancing other areas of the property. Outline windows or rooflines with lights or tuck hints of color into the landscape to complement the focal point design.

Brenneman recommended keeping the decor simple and knowing when to stop decorating. Too many themes and colors will detract from the focal point. He noted that a clean, uncluttered display is more attractive, safer and more cost-effective.

Members of the Christmas Decor Franchise Network have been decorating homes and businesses since 1986 and now create outdoor holiday displays in more than 350 markets in 49 states and Canada each holiday season. For more information about Christmas Decor, contact Brenneman at 717318-1941 or christmasdecor oflancaster@gmail.com, or visit www.christmasdecor.net.

Brian Hartz (right), founder/owner of HARTZ PT, celebrated with his wife, Amy Hartz, CFO, after accepting the Community Impact Award.

Terry Shamberger, one of the founders of Encounter Ministries, recently shared some sobering statistics.

“Lancaster County was thought of as the Bible Belt in Pennsylvania,” said Terry.

“Right now, if you take a look at the population in Lancaster County, (about) 51% of those people don’t walk with the Lord … don’t know Him.”

With the population at more than 500,000, Terry estimated that number at about 250,000. “and we have churches on every corner,” he noted.

In response, Terry has joined with four others - Ernie Simmons, Ron Steffy, Kevin Semrau, and Terry’s son, Steve - to form Encounter Ministries. The organization’s mission is to use events, an

area where Terry and Simmons have extensive experience, to reach people with the goal of “encountering” God. However, the ministry does not plan to stop with just an introduction. As the ministry casts nets, the focus will be on more than simply catch and release. “It’s not about making converts,” said Terry. “It’s about making disciples.”

Encounter has its roots in a Bible study the men started attending each Tuesday morning a dozen years ago.

“Most of us knew each other from that (study),” said Terry, who added that the men attend different churches.

“We got to talking that we should be doing more.” Terry noted that the Lord revealed to him that worship could be used as a weapon in the battle, backing it up with Scripture from Second Chronicles

Public Invited To Christmas Light Show

The Christmas Spirit Light Show, a light display that residents of Lancaster and surrounding counties can enjoy from the comfort of their vehicles, opened on Nov. 25 at the Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster.

Visitors to the light show will journey through a 1-mile track surrounded by hundreds of thousands of color-changing lights, animated and dancing in harmony to Christmas classics.

The show will run through Saturday, Dec. 31. It is open on Sundays through Thursdays from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. and on Fridays and Saturdays from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m.

Guests can enter the light show on Prince Street

through the south entrance into the stadium. The show takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes to drive through, and food and beverage items along with holiday merchandise will be available for purchase at the entrance to the show.

Each year, a portion of the proceeds from the Christmas Spirit Light Show is given to a different nonprofit organization. This year, the selected charity is Power Packs Projects, an organization whose mission is to fight hunger among students across Lancaster and Lebanon counties.

For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.christmasspiritlight shows.com.

20, where Jehoshaphat was surrounded and found victory by going to the top of a mountain to worship.

Presently, Encounter holds a Bible study each Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Lititz City Gate location, 101 N. Broad St., Lititz. On Friday nights, Encounter holds a coffee house with live music from 6 to 8 p.m. at City Gate. However, the ministry has set its sights on a large worship event, hopefully to be held in the near future. “We’re planning probably sometime in late spring or early summer … to do a big prayer and praise event here in Lancaster County,” said Terry, who added the group would like to bring in a worship leader to attract attendees and partnerships with other ministries.

Working in unity with other

churches and ministries is an important concept for the founders of Encounter. “We want to work with everybody,” explained Terry. “We would like to partner with every church that the Lord is willing to (bring us) and to fill those churches up with people.” Terry said the idea is not to found a new church, but rather to create a “united body of Christ to bring in a great harvest.”

Terry noted that he believes the ministry can accomplish all its goals by organizing worship events. “What better, easier way to get churches to be able to work together than through worship?” he asked.

More information about Encounter Ministries may be found at www.encounter -ministries.org. Readers with specific questions may call 717413-7083 or 717-538-6678.

Medical Students Win Scholarships

Five area students were selected as recipients of the 2022 Lancaster Medical Society Foundation scholarship awards. The competitive process, which makes selections based on character, motivation, academic achievement, and financial need, included submissions from applicants throughout Lancaster County. As part of the application, students were required to write an essay explaining why they have chosen to pursue a career in medicine. The selection committee chose the awardees through a blind review process.

This year’s recipients are Launick Saint-Fort of Ephrata, Nicole Hanselman of Manheim, Hannah Kuntz from Elizabethtown, Rhea Sullivan from Landisville and Kevin Chao of Lancaster.

Saint-Fort, a trauma research coordinator, graduate of Penn State Berks and first-year medical student at the Pennsylvania State College of Medicine, was awarded $4,500. For Saint-Fort, whose younger years were spent as a child slave in Haiti, medical school and a potential career as a physician were beyond her wildest dreams. She noted that in childhood, she contracted various illnesses that could have been prevented with quality medical care, which was not available to her.

Hanselman, an Elmira College graduate and research specialist currently in her first year at Saint James School of Medicine in Illinois, received a $3,500 award. She explained that her passion to pursue medicine was con-

ceived in a small orphanage in Vietnam, where she lived after losing her parents and oldest sister. Placed in the orphanage at age 7, Hanselman was assigned to care for the sickest babies, but could only do so much to ease their pain and suffering.

Kuntz, a former medical assistant with AmeriCorps and a graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology, is a first-year student at the Pennsylvania State College of Medicine. Her passion for medicine was fostered through her volunteer experiences working with underserved populations in Lancaster city and later in Rochester, N.Y.

Sullivan, a fourth-year M.D. and Ph.D. student at the Pennsylvania College of Medicine and a graduate of Pennsylvania State University Schreyer Honors College, shared that her decision to pursue a career in medicine came after experiences she had in college, including witnessing the deaths of both a fellow college student and then a neighbor as a result of addiction.

Chao, a former medical scribe and volunteer smoking cessation counselor, is a Saint Joseph’s University (formerly University of the Sciences) graduate and second-year student at Drexel University College of Medicine. Chao’s choice to pursue medicine grew from childhood experiences with the health care system. Born with a heart abnormality that was incredibly difficult to manage, he credits his parents, pediatrician and cardiologist for their tireless care, giving him a life that he would not otherwise have had.

Chao, Kuntz and Sullivan were all awarded $2,000 scholarships.

Founded in 1991, the Lancaster Medical Society Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization that was formed to grant scholarships to students from Lancaster County who are accepted at or continuing a medical degree at an accredited allopathic or osteopathic medical school.

The scholarship foundation is supported by the Lancaster County medical community, through hospitals and health systems, group practices, individual medical society members, local businesses and Lancaster-area residents. Since its inception, more than $282,000 in scholarships have been given to local students.

It will be available for pickup only at the Hambones Social Club of the Columbia Borough Fire Department, 726 Manor St., from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

The meal will include turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, a vegetable, a roll and butter, cranberry sauce and a dessert. It is available to anyone age 55 or older, regardless of income. “It’s for anyone who might be alone on Christmas or who doesn’t have anyone to celebrate with,” Bechtold said. “Christmas is such an important holiday to seniors. I think it’s when they miss their family and friends the most. Rather

than sitting at home alone, they can come out and get a meal and know someone is thinking of them.”

Bechtold began serving the meal in the 1990s, when she took over as director of the Columbia Senior Center. “I was a little upset when I realized I was asked to give up my Christmas Day to do this, but I soon found I really enjoyed it,” she said. “When I see the seniors smile, it makes me happy.”

She noted that the giveaway is a community effort, and she emphasized that help is especially needed this year. Each senior not only takes home a meal but also receives a bag of grocery items and small treats such as cookies or candy. “The cost of everything has gone up, so we really need donations,” Bechtold said. The Columbia Lions Club supports the project, and Bechtold receives discount grocery items from Blessings of Hope, but she said she’d gladly accept donations from individuals as well. Anything that is left

over from the meal is donated to the Veterans Affairs hospital and personal care homes in the area.

Bechtold said she hopes to return to in-person dining next year, and she noted that the meal has never been canceled, even during the height of the pandemic. “We get people from all over Lancaster County and York, and we’ve even had people come from out of state,” she said.

“If a senior needs or wants a meal for Christmas, they can get one.”

Providing the meal also requires help from many volunteers, Bechtold remarked, noting that helpers include members of the Donegal High School wrestling team, who set up and assemble goodie bags on Christmas Eve. A core group of about a dozen people help with the meal, some of whom have volunteered since the beginning, Bechtold said.

Meals will be available by reservation only. To reserve a meal, call Bechtold at 717-3972267 or Luzader at 717-6840128 by Friday, Dec. 16.
