amount of money raised. That brings our total for the 10 years we’ve had this ride to over $160,000 that we’ve raised for veterans,” stated organizer Tyler Stumpf. Billy Hecht, who started the event with Stumpf and some other friends, emphasized that 100% of proceeds from the event go toward helping veterans who utilize services at the Lebanon VA Medical Center, with no overhead or administrative costs. The 11th annual New Year’s Day motorcycle ride will take off from the Walter S. Ebersole American Legion Post 185, located at 255 W. Main St., Mount Joy, at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2020. The registration fee, which is a set per-person donation, will include a meal at the conclusion of the ride. Registration will open at 10 a.m. at Post 185. Breakfast food and coffee will be available for purchase. The Post 185 Ladies Auxiliary will serve homemade soup before the ride. Vendors will offer items for purchase including commemorative shirts, sweatshirts, and patches for vests. “Before the ride, we say the Pledge of Allegiance, and with that many people there Main Street just becomes completely quiet,” Stumpf shared. Approximately 475 bikes rode in last year’s event. One tradition the ride has maintained through the years is the naming of one rider as “Baby New Year,” who must ride the first mile dressed in a baby costume. That rider has the honor of selecting next year’s Baby New Year. “This year we have

This year, the holiday concert will be a joint effort between the music department and Interact Club. Members of Interact will help out at the concert by handing out programs prior to the performance and later distributing collection baskets for donations during intermission. Interact advisers Amy Burdyn and Megan Adams will share briefly about the club’s efforts at intermission. The MCHS Interact Club is sponsored by the Manheim Rotary. In addition to Burdyn and Adams, the club’s advisers include Lu Ann Wise and Manheim Rotary president Ken Hameloth. The theme for Interact is “Service Above Self,” with a central concept of students giving back to the community. Club members are required to volunteer for a minimum of 10 service hours by the end of each school year. Service projects include roadside cleanup, preparing and serving dinners at Salem United Methodist Church, offering technology tutoring and singing Christmas carols at Pleasant View Retirement Community, helping with evening meals at Water Street Mission in Lancaster, and offering assistance at local events such as the annual Manheim Central Foundation for Educational Enrichment (MCFEE) Auction, Manheim Chamber of Commerce RockN-Glow 5K, and St. Paul’s United Church of Christ Breakfast With Santa. In addition, students volunteer at the Manheim Community Library and a multitude of elementary school functions with the Manheim Central School District. According to the club’s advisers, last school year the club members served more than 1,000 hours within the school and community. our first female Baby New Year,” Stumpf noted. Elizabethtown resident Larry Witters, the 2019 Baby New Year, relegated the role to Teresa Ardini of Manheim for 2020. Ardini is creating her own costume and will announce next year’s lucky - or not so lucky, depending on the weather honoree after the ride. The approximately 25- to 30-mile ride follows a scenic route along the Susquehanna River through Marietta and Bainbridge. The ride will finish at the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329, 240 N. Hanover St., Elizabethtown, where a traditional pork and sauerkraut meal will be served in the banquet hall. A silent auction will feature plenty of motorcycle merchandise, gift cards, and other items, including a T-shirt quilt created by TLC-Quilting. Another fun tradition is the presentation of a plaque to the individual who travels the farthest to participate in the ride. Motorcyclists have come from Philadelphia, Baltimore, and beyond in past years. The winner of last year’s plaque rode from his home north of the Poconos. Organized by members of Post 185, the ride is open to the public and not only to motorcyclists, but to drivers of any other vehicles who would like to participate to honor veterans. People are also welcome to pay for admission to the meal and afterride festivities. Businesses interested in making a contribution toward the fundraiser for veterans may call Stumpf at 717-468-6197.

Last-Minute Gift Ideas That Leave Lasting Impressions

radition is a hallmark of the holiday season. Religious services, family gatherings and trips to see Santa Claus are just a few of the many traditions people adhere to during the holiday season. Many holiday shoppers also adhere to the time-honored tradition of last-minute shopping. The perfect gift can sometimes prove to be elusive, especially as the sand in the holiday hourglass keeps dwindling. These last-minute gift ideas may be just what shoppers need to put smiles on the faces of their loved ones this holiday season. Books: Books are often overlooked, especially now that so many readers use e-readers. But books can be an ideal gift and especially convenient for last-minute shoppers, who can even gift e-books from popular websites. Recipients simply receive an email on Christmas morning informing them that their books are ready to be downloaded to their devices. Booksellers at the local bookstore are also a great resource to tap, as they read widely themselves and are familiar with other readers’ favorites as well as new releases. Experiences: A 2017 survey by the global research firm NPD Group found that roughly 40 percent of holiday shoppers planned to give experiences as gifts. Experience gifts open up a host of possibilities for last-minute shoppers stuck on what to give those loved ones

who seemingly have it all. Options abound, including day trips, theater tickets, amusement park passes and tickets to concerts and sporting events. Experience gifts are also a great way to support local businesses. Food/beverage: Television channels such as The Food Network have changed the way many people look at food. When gifting the family foodie, last-minute shoppers may not need to look further than the latest hotspot restaurant or specialty grocery store for the perfect gift. Take them out for a night on the town or give a gift card they can use at their convenience. The craft beer boom has created a host of devoted and knowledgeable beer drinkers, so a gift card or growler from a local craft brewery is sure to please people who love hoisting frosty pints. Streaming service subscriptions: Many people are cutting the cord with their cable companies in favor of streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu. Subscriptions to such services can make ideal and affordable holiday gifts. A six-month or yearlong subscription likely won’t break shoppers’ budgets and will provide months of entertainment to loved ones. Last-minute holiday shopping is easier than ever, especially for shoppers willing to think outside the box.

How Small Businesses Improve The Consumer Experience

W

hen shopping this holiday season, keep in mind that “shopping small” not only more. As a result, large companies have less incentive to work one-on-one with customhelps the local community but that it can also mean a more pleasant experi- ers. Small businesses are not beholden to scale, which gives them the flexibility to offer ence for you too. While small businesses may not have the marketing muscle more unique products, including customized items. to compete with large corporations, many small businesses have perfected the art of providing top-notch experiences for their customers by embracing several strategies that make consumers feel appreciated.

Improved customer service

Nearly every consumer has had to contact a retailer or service provider regarding a purchase at one point or another. Contacting a large corporation can be a difficult experience for consumers, who often must answer several telephone prompts before they can be connected to a human being. Small businesses typically do not ask customers to clear such hurdles before they can get in touch with an actual person. That makes the process of contacting customer service less time-consuming and aggravating and more enjoyable for customers.

■ Responses

Small businesses are in better position to respond to negative experiences or reviews, particularly online reviews, because they have fewer customers than large companies that field hundreds, if not thousands, of complaints per day. Studies have shown that customers appreciate responses from businesses they patronize. A 2018 online reviews survey from Review Trackers found that 53 percent of consumers expect a response to negative reviews within a week of posting their reviews and are disappointed when they do not receive a response. Unfortunately, the same survey found that 63 percent of reviewers have never received a response to a review. Small businesses are in a unique position to respond to online reviews, and providing such responses can turn a potentially negative consumer experience into a positive one. What’s more, because online reviews and responses are public, prospective customers can read a company’s response and know that owners want their customers to have as positive an experience as possible.

■ Personalization

Many large companies won’t customize their products, as their financial success is typically rooted in how effectively they can scale to thousands of customers per day, if not

How To Cut Back On Holiday Waste

T

he holiday season is a joyful time of year. But the weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day also tend to be very wasteful. The U.S. Environmental Protec-

tion Agency estimates that household waste increases by more than 25 percent during the holiday season. Reducing waste come the holiday season does not mean celebrants have to forgo big family meals or beautifully wrapped gifts. In fact, there are several ways to reduce waste without spoiling the spirit of the season.

Give eco-conscious gifts. The environment may not be the first thing that comes to mind when holiday shoppers are looking for gifts for their loved ones, but giving reusable gifts can have a positive, long-term impact on the planet. Reusable coffee mugs, water bottles or straws can dramatically reduce waste over time, and such items make great stocking stuffers. Shoppers also can look for ecofriendly gift items made from recycled materials, which run the gamut from home furnishings to calendars to clothing.

cannot be recycled. Reusing wrapping paper, purchasing only recyclable paper or wrapping gifts in old newspapers or magazines can help holiday celebrants reduce their carbon footprints.

Prepare less food and donate any leftovers. The Worldwatch Institute notes that, during the holiday season, celebrants generate three times as much food waste as they do during other times of the year. Large family meals are a tradition of the holiday season, but hosts who routinely find themselves discarding leftovers can plan on preparing less food this year. Consider how much guests are likely to eat and plan meals accordingly instead of buying enough food to feed a small army. Donate leftovers to nearby shelters so nothing goes to waste.

Recycle live Christmas trees. Local residents can explore options for recycling live Christmas trees when it’s time to take down the decorations after the holidays. For

example, Lancaster County Central Park holds an annual Christmas tree recycling operation. Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation employees grind Christmas trees into free mulch for public pickup. There is a nominal suggested donation per tree, with the funds going toward the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. According to park officials, residents drop off about 1,500 Christmas trees each year, which produce 22 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acidloving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas and many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. To learn more about the Lancaster County Park System, readers may visit www.lancastercountyparks. org. Local residents may contact their municipal office for more information about other programs in their community.

Since 1900, the National Audubon Society has conducted a bird census called the Christmas Bird Count, with much of the legwork done by volunteers. The count is known as the largest annual citizen science effort, and all levels of birders can help, including backyard watchers. The data collected has been used for studying bird population trends, migration patterns, and conservation policy. Locally, there will be four opportunities to participate in the count. Interested persons are assigned to a team with leaders who are acquainted with their areas. Backyard birders must register with the contact person before the count to determine if their home is within the count circle. A count will be held on Sunday, Dec. 15, in southern Lancaster County, and the contact person is Bob Schutsky at 717-548-3303 or info@birdtreks.com. The Count for Kids will be held in collaboration with the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation on Saturday, Dec. 28, at Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster. It is designed to teach children about birding and volunteering as a citizen scientist. All children are required to register by calling 717-295-2055 and must be accompanied by an adult. For more details, readers may contact John Lahr at 717284-3497 or johnlahr324@gmail.com. A count will take place in Lititz on Sunday, Dec. 29. For details and registration, readers may contact Ted Nichols at 717-8563851 or tanicholsii@gmail.com. A count will be held in Lancaster on Saturday, Jan. 4. For details and registration, readers may contact Roger Stoner at 717-393-9030. To learn more about the Lancaster County Bird Club, readers may visit www.lancasterbirdclub.org.

Snow Removal Tips Posted For Safe Mail Delivery

Hours Available 7am-9pm

With the approach of winter in Pennsylvania come freezing temperatures, snow, and ice. The U.S. Postal Service is asking customers to help letter carriers deliver mail safely by clearing snow and ice from sidewalks, stairs, and mailboxes. The Postal Service will make every reasonable, safe attempt to deliver mail during and after a storm. However, wintry precipitation can make mail delivery dangerous and slow. Maintaining a clear path to the mailbox - including steps, porches, walkways, and street approach - will help keep letter carriers safe and help them continue to offer consistent delivery service. All customers should keep the approach to and exit from their mailbox or mail slot free of ice and snow. Customers receiving door delivery should make sure their sidewalks, steps, and porches are clear. Customers receiving curbside or rural delivery should remove snow piles, such as those left by snow plows, to keep access to their mailboxes clear for letter carriers; mailboxes should be cleared sufficiently on both sides. Curbside or rural boxes should also be kept clear of vehicles, trashcans, and other objects. Delivery service may be delayed or curtailed whenever streets or walkways present hazardous conditions for letter carriers or when snow is plowed against mailboxes. Delivery will be curtailed only after careful consideration and as a last resort. Delivery of curtailed mail will be attempted the next delivery day. Blue collection boxes also need to be kept clear for customers to deposit their mail and for the Postal Service to collect the mail for delivery. Residents and businesses with collection boxes near their property are asked to keep them clear of snow and ice.

Achey said that the purpose of the now-annual event, which is entering its fifth year, has always been to share the good news and love of Jesus Christ. Last year, approximately 260 people attended the meal. “We’ve started using the Saturday before Christmas because it tends to be a convenient day for many people,” commented Achey. “A number of folks have made the meal a part of their Christmas tradition as well, coming year after year, and we’re glad to see old friends as well as meet first-timers.” Ruhl’s UMC offers a traditional Sunday worship service each week at 8 a.m., with a contemporary praise service at 10:30 a.m. Sunday school classes for people of all ages take place from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. All are welcome. The PPL Foundation recently awarded more than $575,000 in funding to support 13 nonprofit organizations working to improve the lives and well-being of individuals throughout central and eastern Pennsylvania. The grants announced are helping organizations fulfill their missions across the company’s 29-county service territory in central and eastern Pennsylvania. The 2019 PPL Foundation Major Grant recipients include several area organizations. Joshua Group in Harrisburg received a grant of $25,000 to help expand the number of children being served by an after-school program. Lancaster Equity Inc. received a grant of $40,000 for the development of a new park and playground on Beaver Street, a direct request of neighbors in the community who are working collaboratively to improve the community. Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education Foundation in Harrisburg received a grant of $50,000 for the development of a fund that will be used to provide faculty and staff resources to develop, test and quickly implement ideas to help transform public higher education in Pennsylvania. Tabor Community Services in Lancaster received a grant of $50,000 to expand the capacity of its eviction prevention program to help stabilize neighborhoods by providing at-risk tenants with financial counseling, mediation with landlords and short-term financial assistance. Earlier this year, the PPL Foundation awarded $450,000 in sustaining grants to more than 70 community organizations. The PPL Foundation also contributed more than $2 million to support local United Way organizations. The recently awarded grants bring the foundation’s 2019 community contributions to more than $3 million. The PPL Foundation awards grants in spring and fall. The next grant cycle, for sustaining grants that assist organizations with general operating expenses, begins in January. Interested organizations can apply for grants from $1,000 to $25,000. To be considered for a grant, all organizations must apply online. To learn more, readers may visit www.pplcares.com.

On Nov. 17, Carole Bubacz and Sharon Boyer presented their piano students in a recital at Juniper Village. A wide variety of music was selected by the students and their teachers for the program. Parents, relatives, and friends of the students, along with residents of Juniper Village, enjoyed music by composers from J.S. Bach to Elton John. The young pianists participating were Alayna Brubaker, Stewart Carter, Taylar McFadden, Sarah Heinz, Cassie Ginder, Dominic Juarbe, Ian Rivera, Benjamin Heinz, Julia Nolt, and Lilly Stehman. Bubacz and Boyer joined some of their students in duets and duo piano pieces.
