Onany given day, you may find members of the Interact Club at Manheim Central High School (MCHS) out and about in the community. “We do a lot of service projects,” said Rachel Stephens, copresident of the club. “We help in any way we can. We’ve done a lot of work with local charities.”
The club will be one of two beneficiaries of donations that will be collected during MCHS’ annual holiday concert. Donations will be used for scholarships presented at the end of the year to a senior chosen by the club advisers and to a senior selected by the music department. The concert will be held on Sunday, Dec. 18, at 2 p.m. at the middle school, 261 White Oak Road, Manheim.
Rachel said the club is one of the school’s main outlets for community service. “I love that this is an opportunity to complete community service with a group without having to do it on my own,” she shared.
Payton Snyder, who is the club’s vice president, said being a part of Interact has helped her build relationships. “I’ve had the chance to connect with so many different people through this club,” she remarked. “I know people in different grades at school, and it’s also helped me get to know people in the community.”
Interact members have completed community service projects at the Home on Ferdinand, Pleasant View Communities and Brittany’s Hope, among other organizations.
Camryn Heth, club co-president, said the club helps with child care during PTO meetings and other elementary events and assists with Wednesday night dinners at Salem Church as well.
Club secretary Sydney Peters said all of the service projects have been fun and rewarding. “When we go to Pleasant View and spend time with the residents or we volunteer with Brittany’s Hope, we’re really getting to know people who live in our community,” she remarked. “I love that.”
The club currently has about 100 members, each of whom prioritizes community service, said Raegan Nissley, club treasurer. “It feels good to serve and give back to organizations and people in our community,” she commented.
The Interact Club advisers are Amy Burdyn and volunteer adviser LuAnn Wise. Club members will hand out programs prior to the concert and will collect donations for the scholarships during intermission.
The concert will feature the MCHS concert band, under the direction of John Brackbill; orchestra, directed by Shenna Caravella; and choir, directed by Stephanie Magaro. Among the selections will be well-known Christmas tunes, including “Silent Night,” “Carol of the Bells” and “White Christmas,” along with other pieces such as “Toboggan,” by JaRod Hall; “Winter Solstice,” by Todd Parrish; and “You Do Not Walk Alone,” by Elaine Hagenberg.

“This is all about a good meal and good fellowship,” said event committee member Clare Funck, describing the free community Christmas meal at Cross Roads Church. The meal will be served on Sunday, Dec. 25, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church, located at 800 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy. Options will be available for dine-in and takeout.
This is the 25th year the church has offered the meal, which began not only to provide sustenance at Christmas, but also to provide companionship. “When I talk to people who come to this dinner, a lot of people have just lost a spouse, and the holidays are hard,” Funck stated. “Some have no family in the area and nobody to spend Christmas with. That’s what this season is all about - community, fellowship and being there for people.”

If you look out your window on New Year’s Day, you may see a crowd of motorcycles zooming down the road. They are part of an annual ride to benefit veterans.
“We take the same route every year, and people know about it, so they come out and kids come out holding flags and cheering us on,” said Tyler Stumpf, one of the event organizers. “It’s become a New Year’s tradition.”
The is the 14th year for the event, which will be held on Sunday, Jan. 1.

The meal will include turkey, gourmet potatoes, stuffing, green beans and desserts. Everything is made and donated by the congregation, said Kendric Bert, chair of the committee. “It takes a lot of people to make this happen,” he remarked. “This church is very community oriented.” Along with making and preparing food, church members work as servers and greeters during the meal.
“We have a sign by the entrance for people to come in, and we decorate the gym for the meal,” said Funck, noting that holiday music is also played during the meal. In the past, about 400 people have attended the dinner.
The church members are active year-round in community projects, including holding a harvest fest in the fall, Bert said. “This meal is an extension of our mission to serve the community,” he noted. “Our leadership promotes community involvement.”
Although the meal is free, donations of nonperishable items will be accepted at the door for the Mount Joy Food Bank. An auction will be held there as well, featuring items donated by local businesses. T-shirts and patches will also be for sale. Proceeds from the event will benefit veterans in the Lebanon VA Medical Center. Since its inception, the ride has raised more than $240,000, Stumpf said, adding, “We will hit the quarter-million mark this year.”
Each year, the event includes fun traditions such as Baby New Year, when a participant is chosen for the honor and must attend in a baby costume and sash. This year’s honoree is Brian Landvader.
Over the years, the ride has grown significantly, Stumpf said. “We started with 11 motorcycles, and now we’re averaging about 400 motorcycles,” he commented. “When all the bikes are lined up on Main Street in Mount Joy, it’s really something to see.”
Billy Hecht, who is also helping to organize the ride, said the event has continued to be popular because it not only offers a fun excursion for participants, but it also supports an important cause. “A lot of people like that the money stays local,” he noted. “One hundred percent of the money goes strictly to the veterans’ needs.”
The event will be held rain, snow or shine, and participants are encouraged to come with any form of transportation. “You don’t have to come with a motorcycle,” Hecht shared. “You can drive a car or a truck. You can come in any vehicle.”
For more information on the event, call Stumpf at 717-468-6197 or Hecht at 717-283-6379.

Yuletide Tours To Return To Rock Ford
Christmas traditions today are mostly contained to a oneday celebration on Dec. 25, when families around the world exchange gifts and celebrate the birth of Christ. However, over 200 years ago,
Colonial Americans observed the holiday in a much different fashion.
Yuletide Tours will return to Historic Rock Ford, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, on Tuesday, Dec. 27; Wednesday, Dec. 28; and Thursday, Dec. 29, to provide an immersive view
into how Lancaster County residents celebrated Christmas in the late 18th century. The Hand Mansion at Rock Ford will be open for self-guided tours on Dec. 27 and 28 from 4 to 6 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. and on Dec. 29 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m.
Guests will have an opportunity to walk through the historic former home of Edward Hand, which will be decorated as it would have been when Hand lived there. Volunteers dressed in period accurate attire will be stationed throughout the house to answer questions, and hearth cookers will prepare historically accurate food in the kitchen and explain to guests what meals were customary in the old days. In the halls of the mansion, dancers will perform traditional routines from the 18th century such as Jack’s Health, Midnight Ramble and Duke of Kent’s Waltz.
For the first time, live music will be provided by harpsichordists Margaret Marsch and Faith Martin, as well as Faith’s sister, Mercy, on the violin.
The musicians will perform classical pieces and traditional Yuletide carols, many of which would have been performed in the Hand Mansion while Hand lived there. Jasper Yates, the uncle of Hand’s wife, Catherine, and a close friend of Hand’s, lived in Lancaster during this time period and owned a harpsichord himself.
The Yuletide Tours will also include a scavenger hunt activi-
ty for children, and guests will have an opportunity to hear a recording of Hand, portrayed by an actor from the Theater of the Seventh Sister. In the recording, Hand will reminisce on the Christmas of 1776, when he crossed the Delaware River with George Washington and his company.
2022 is the first year that Rock Ford will host full Yuletide Tours since 2019, as the event was canceled or modified
due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021. When the tours began over 30 years ago, they were less centered around a historically accurate portrayal of the property and the property was decorated in a more modern fashion. Around 2005, Rock Ford began to alter the tours to give an accurate glimpse into the Christmas celebrations of the time.
“One of the reasons we do the tours after Christmas is
that Dec. 25 marked the beginning of the holiday for the old English, and it would last until Jan. 6,” said Sam Slaymaker, director of Historic Rock Ford. Historically, the English observed Christmas Day strictly as a religious event and would save the festivities for the 12th day of Christmas.
To purchase tickets for the Yuletide Tours, visit https://historicrockford.org/ events/.

Since 1900, the National Audubon Society has conducted a bird census called the Christmas Bird Count with much of the leg work done by volunteers. All levels of birders can help, including backyard bird watchers. The data collected has been used for studying bird population trends, migration patterns, and conservation policy.
The Lancaster County Bird Club will
offer several opportunities to participate in the count. Interested persons will be assigned to a team with leaders who are acquainted with their areas. Backyard birders should register with the contact person before the count to determine if their home is within the count circle and to receive instructions.
On Saturday, Dec. 17, a bird count will be held in Lititz. For details, con-
tact Ted Nichols at 717-856-3851 or tanicholsii@gmail.com.
On Sunday, Dec. 18, a bird count will take place in southern Lancaster County. For details, contact Derek Stoner at 484-723-3348 or derekstoner@hotmail.com.

Tippetts/Weaver Architects Honored With Award
The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Pennsylvania recently named Tippetts/ Weaver (T/Wa) Architects of Lancaster as the recipient of the 2022 Architecture Firm Award. This is the first time since its inception in 2013 that the award has been given to a firm with a female founder. Wendy H. Tippetts is one of the two founding partners of T/Wa, and for more than 30 years she has led the design direction and culture of the firm.
The Architecture Firm (of the Year) Award recognizes a Pennsylvania firm whose passion and practice have produced notable architecture for at least a decade. Deserving firms have demonstrated excellence in design and leadership through any combination of the following criteria: the breadth and/or depth of their portfolio, a healthy firm culture, influence on the practice of architecture and exemplary outcomes for clients and/or society.
T/Wa was chosen from a pool of four nominees submitted to the committee by the nearly 3,000 members of AIA Pennsylvania. T/Wa is not only the first firm from central Pennsylvania to have been chosen for the award, but also the smallest.
Working in the small cities, towns and rural places of central Pennsylvania, T/Wa mixes a modern aesthetic with an historical context. The firm’s projects include the Fulton Theatre expansion and Actor’s Housing; the Lancaster Science Factory;

Giving In More Ways Than One
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
For Erin Mary Lynch of Landisville, the holiday season is more about giving than receiving. Lynch not only purchases Christmas presents for her friends and family; but she also aims to give back to her community through music and providing a message of hope.
“Faith and performance have gotten me through so
many things,” said Lynch. “The ability to pull people out of whatever day they’re having and into a joyful and happy mood is so special.”
Lynch was first introduced to the world of theater around the age of 7; when she performed in a Christmas show at the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre. Since then, she has starred in numerous productions across the county, return-
ing to the Dutch Apple and first performing at Sight & Sound Theatres in its production of “Jonah” in 2012. “I was super lucky to grow up in Lancaster, where there are so many opportunities to perform,” said Lynch, who is currently a member of the cast of “David” at Sight & Sound.
This was the first year that Lynch was the writer, director and choreographer of the annual “Wish” musical at Dutch Apple on Dec. 4 and 5. The musical, hosted by nonprofit organization Mychal’s Message, raises funds in order to provide Christmas gifts and meals to families in Lancaster County.
This year’s show followed the story of a young girl whose family is participating in Wish to give to those in need. The show highlighted the importance of giving versus receiving through the eyes of its protagonist. “I was able to see all of the kids and families that were involved with the program because of the mission and not just the show,” said Lynch. “It shifted my perspective.”
The auditions for “Wish” drew young performers from all over the county, and those selected began rehearsing in the beginning of October. After the end of the show, the money raised was used to pay for the gifts and meals that were acquired by Lynch’s older sister, Shannon Hickey who is a member of Mychal’s Message. The week before Christmas, the show’s cast members and their families will deliver the gifts and meals to recipients at McCaskey High School.
Lynch wrote the script and worked on “Wish” in between rehearsals and performances for “David,” often spending her evening dinner breaks writing the script, reviewing auditions and choreographing routines. This is the second year Lynch has written the script, and she plans to return as a writer for next year’s show.
