Delivering Kindness BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Chloe Phillips won the Award of Valor at Special Olympics Pennsylvania’s Fall Fest.
Strength, Spirit And Sportsmanship BY CATHY MOLITORIS
hen Chloe Phillips sets her mind on something, even a pandemic can’t stop her. Chloe, who is a competitive swimmer and powerlifter, was determined to stay active after COVID shut down not only the gym where she typically trains but also Special Olympics Pennsylvania, in which she competes. As her mother, Anne Phillips, explained, Special Olympics made the switch to Zoom training sessions, which were sporadically attended by the athletes, except for Chloe. “Chloe participated in every single one,” Anne recalled. “She was motivated. She’s very competitive, and she needed to stay active.” Chloe also set up a home gym to keep working on her training goals, and she hired a personal trainer. When Special Olympics Pennsylvania returned to in-person competition at Fall Fest, held at Villanova University in November, Chloe not only took home a gold medal for bench pressing 140 pounds, but also earned a silver in deadlift and
cial Olympics athletes with her drive and determination, but she was making a mark at Lititz recCenter, where she trains. Fitness director Simon Ababou praised Chloe for her perseverance, noting that she’s a perfect example of someone whose hard work paid off. “If anyone wants to learn how to squat or deadlift, they need to meet (with Chloe) to learn how to execute the exercises,” he said. “Chloe is unstoppable.” Chloe, who wants to become a certified personal trainer, said it’s impossible for her to choose which sport she loves more, swimming or lifting, but she’s certain of one thing: The gym is among her favorite places. “I like sticking with it and working hard,” she stated. She encourages others to reach their fitness goals, no matter how big or small. “I like promoting health,” she said. “Come to the gym every day and work out and train as hard as you can. It doesn’t matter how hard you can do it, just do it.” For more information on Special Olympics, contact Anne Phillips at 717-940-8335.

Riding For Veterans BY CATHY MOLITORIS
When Tyler Stumpf and some friends came up with the idea of organizing a New Year’s Day motorcycle ride 13 years ago, they knew they wanted to raise money for veterans, but they didn’t anticipate how much the event would grow over the years. “That first year, we had 11 motorcycles participating, and we raised about $400, which we thought was great,” Stumpf recalled. A little over a decade later, the ride draws an average of 450 See Veterans pg 2

squats. And she was recognized for her strength, spirit and sportsmanship with the Award of Valor. “This award is given to the athlete who is motivated throughout the year, one that is spirited and encouraging of others,” Anne explained, noting that Chloe was recognized for her efforts beyond Fall Fest as well. She promotes fitness at GiGi’s Playhouse in Lancaster, where she leads a weekly fitness group for children with Down syndrome and co-leads a fitness class for adults with Down syndrome. She’s also a global messenger and health and fitness coordinator for Special Olympics. Chloe, 23, began swimming at a very early age. “She was in the pool at three months,” her mom remarked. A graduate of Manheim Central High School, she swam on the school team. One day, she saw a video of her hero, Michael Phelps, talking about weightlifting as part of his training regimen, and she was inspired. Five years ago, she added powerlifting to her routine, and soon she was not only influencing other Spe-

Timothy Healy’s job title may have been mail carrier, but the Manheim man went well beyond the role he held for 37 years. “He liked to meet new people, and he liked to make a difference in people’s lives,” said his daughter Meghan Healy. “He was very welcoming to everyone, and he liked to genuinely get to know everyone. If he could help people, he would in any way he could.” Timothy, 60, passed away unexpectedly on Nov. 13. As a Timothy Healy tribute to the man who made his mark on the Lancaster and Manheim communities, more than 40 postal workers at the post office annex in Lancaster participated in a caravan soon after his death, beeping their horns in tribute and displaying an Irish flag to pay homage to Timothy’s heritage. motorcycles, and the organizers have raised $213,000 for the Lebanon VA Medical Center. This year’s charity motorcycle ride to benefit veterans will be held on Saturday, Jan. 1. Registration will begin at 10 a.m., and the ride will leave from the Walter S. Ebersole American Legion Post 185, 255 W. Main St., Mount Joy, at 1 p.m. The 25-mile ride will follow a route along the Susquehanna River and conclude at the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329, 240 N. Hanover St., where a pork and sauerkraut meal will be served following the ride. A Chinese auction will be held there as well, featuring items donated from local businesses. “Each year we also do a Baby New Year, and he shows up at noon,” Stumpf said, noting that the person chosen must wear a baby costume and sash. This year’s honor goes to Marlin Schwanger. “He’ll get to choose Baby New Year for next year,” Stumpf explained. Proceeds from the entry fee
for the ride as well as the sale of T-shirts and patches will benefit programs at the VA. “One hundred percent of the money we raise goes to veterans,” Stumpf noted. Last year’s ride was canceled due to the pandemic, but organizers were still able to raise $24,000 through donations. Stumpf noted that anyone is welcome to participate in the ride, with or without a motorcycle. “Anybody with any vehicle can join us,” he stated, adding that the ride draws new and returning participants each year, some of whom come from out of state. “When we did the ride two years ago, our long-distance participant winner was from New Jersey.” Stumpf said the success of the ride comes from a combination of something fun to do with friends while supporting a great cause. “It’s the lure of riding on New Year’s Day, getting outside and knowing that everything we raise is going to support veterans,” he remarked. For more information on the event, call Stumpf at 717- Hundreds of motorcycles will take to the streets for a New 468-6197. Year’s Day benefit ride for veterans.

Since 1900, the National Audubon Society has conducted a bird census called the Christmas Bird Count with much of the leg work done by volunteers. All levels of birders, including backyard watchers, can help with the citizen science effort. The data collected has been used for studying bird population trends, migration patterns, and conservation policy. Locally, there will be four opportunities to participate in the count. Interested persons are assigned to a team with leaders who are acquainted with their areas. Backyard birders are asked to register with the contact person before the count to determine if their home is within the count circle. The Count for Kids will be held on Saturday, Dec. 18, in collaboration with Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation at Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster. It is designed to teach children about birding and volunteering as a citizen scientist. All children are required to register by calling 717-295-2055
and must be accompanied by an adult. For details, contact John Lahr at 717-284-3497 or johnlahr324@gmail.com. In addition to the Count for Kids, counts will take place on Sunday, Dec. 19, in southern Lancaster County; on Sunday, Dec. 26, in Lititz; and on Sunday, Jan. 2, in Lancaster. For details about the counts, contact Bob Schutsky at 717-5483303 or info@birdtreks.com for southern Lancaster County, Ted Nichols at 717-8563851 or tanicholsii@gmail.com for Lititz, and Roger Stone at 717-393-9030 for Lancaster. Lake View Bible Church, 383 Lake View Drive, Manheim, will present “Long Foretold: The Journey of the Magi” on Sunday, Dec. 19, at 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. The play begins five and a half centuries before Jesus’ birth with Daniel in Babylon, and it continues many years later, when magi of the first century travel to Bethlehem to worship Jesus. The narrative progresses through Herod’s attempt to discover the Christ in order to kill Him, as well as God’s redirection of the magi, thwarting Herod’s plan. The play concludes with the ultimate reason Christ came to Earth - to offer the way for mankind to return to God. Admission is free. started his career with the postal service there before relocating to a farm in Manheim. He spent the next few decades raising four kids in Manheim with his wife of 39 years, Debbie, and sharing his sunny outlook on life with everyone he met. Being a mail carrier was a perfect job for Timothy, Meghan said, because he enjoyed staying active and getting to know the people on his route. Prior to joining the postal service, he was a professional bull rider who competed throughout the East Coast. Timothy also ran marathons and participated in Iron Man events. But it was the opportunity to interact with people on his mail route that he enjoyed the most, Meghan noted. “People knew how bighearted and kindhearted he was,” she stated, adding that he’d often bring coffee or a sandwich to people in need whom he encountered while delivering mail. “If he had an elderly person on his route, he would take the time to walk the mail to their door and drop it off, just to check in on them.”

As news of Timothy’s passing spread, tributes from friends and co-workers poured in to his family. One of his sons and his nephew both work for the postal service as well, and soon the idea for the caravan developed. Meghan noted that the event was very emotional for her family, especially her mother. “It was heartwarming and unexpected,” she said. “It made my mom smile.” Co-worker Diane Smith recalled Timothy’s infectious joy around the holiday season. “He would sing along to the Christmas music playing on the radio,” she wrote in an online tribute. “He would comically change the words of the songs as he sang to entertain those around him. … He will be greatly missed by those who knew him.” Robert Salvatore Corba, another co-worker, emphasized Timothy’s ability to bring joy to the job. “He had such an uplifting and genuine personality,” he wrote online, “(and a) great sense of humor. … Not a day went by that he didn’t bring a smile to my face.” To watch the postal workers’ tribute to Timothy, visit https://bit.ly/TimothyHealy.

Community members are invited to write to Santa in braille during the holiday season. Although the program is geared toward children who are blind or vision-impaired, it is open to anyone. All letter writers will receive a response in braille and a gift. Participants may send letters to Santa’s attention in the care of Erika Rothermel at VisionCorps, 244 N. Queen St., Lancaster, PA 17603. For more information, call 717205-4158. Additionally, large-print 2022 calendars are now available from VisionCorps. The calendar is 21.5 by 17 inches when opened, and each date square is 2.25 by 2.75 inches. The inside calendar pages are in black and white for contrast, and the numbers are large and in bold print to make them easier to see. The cover of the calendar is in color. For information on how to order a calendar, contact Linda at lconyers@vision corps.net or call 717-2054116. Calendars will be sent out in the mail.

LEADS Announces 2021 Ornament As one of the first buildings constructed at Franklin & Marshall College, Old Main has stood the test of time. To commemorate its place in Lancaster history, the iconic structure has been chosen as the 14th Lancaster Landmark Ornament, an annual fundraiser for Lancaster’s Economic Action for Downtown’s Success (LEADS), the all-volunteer group that provides all city holiday decorations, including the Penn Square Christmas tree and summertime hanging flower baskets in Lancaster. LEADS selected the 165year-old Old Main as this year’s honored landmark. Dedicated in 1856, Old Main embodies the classic details associated with Gothic Revival architecture, including extreme verticality, lancet windows and louvers, battlements, and finials. It was designed by the Baltimore firm Dixon, Balbirnie & Dixon and built by Lancaster contractor Haden Patrick Smith at a cost of $25,136 starting in 1854.
The 3D ornaments are renditions of structures that have played a meaningful role in Lancaster’s historic and cultural life, crafted of solid brass plated in 24-karat gold. For the first time, the ornament is offered in full color. It can be used as a tree or window decoration or displayed in the gold foil box it comes in along with a card telling its history. Since 2012, LEADS has invested more than $75,000 to improve the city’s holiday decorations. Proceeds from the sale of the ornaments go toward paying for that investment. Ornaments can be purchased at several Lancaster locations, including BUiLDiNG CHARACTER, 342 N. Queen St., rear warehouses; Festoon at the Firehouse, 202 N. Duke St.; the Turkey Lady at Central Market; and the city Visitors Center on Penn Square. They can also be ordered by calling BUiLDiNG CHARACTER at 717-394-7201. There is an additional charge for shipping. For more information about LEADS, visit www.lancasterleads.org.

Does anything push the cuteness quotient like a puppy or kitten under a fully decorated Christmas tree? Probably not, but is it wise to bring a pet into the home during the holidays only to fully grasp the reality of pet ownership when life returns to normal in January? Alexis Vollmer, an animal care technician, with the Humane League of Lancaster County, said that the last couple of years the organization has been lucky following Christmas. “We had quite a few less returns compared to how many were adopted out,” noted Vollmer, who credits the matchmaking skills of league members and staff with that low number. Vollmer pointed out that there are two important commitments that potential adopters should examine when considering a new pet. “I would say people who are prepared for the time and financial commitments (are more successful pet owners),” said Vollmer. She noted that while animals are spayed, neutered, and microchipped by the league, there will still be expenses related to yearly examinations and vaccinations, and she added that older pets may need special food, medicine, and joint supplements. Time commitments may vary with the animal, but Vollmer warns that this time of year may give a false sense of reality. “Around the holidays, people are off and have free time, but once they go back to work (they will have less free time),” she noted, adding that it is essential to consider the demands of a new puppy or kitten. “Consistency (in a schedule) helps keep the animals from getting stressed out,” she stated. “We have gotten a lot of animals (back) because people didn’t have the time anymore.” Several factors are involved in helping to select an animal that fits with the family’s dynamic. “We work with the information we get on the applications and what we know about the animal,” said Vollmer of the matchmaking process. She noted that when there are already pets in the home, it is important to introduce them slowly and have plans in place in case they do not warm up to each other right away. dog, a family may bring the pet to meet the potential adoptee. She noted that a kitten may be a better choice than an adult cat if the home already has a dog in it. Whether small children live in the home or visit often is also a determining factor. Vollmer noted that the league recommends bringing children or grandchildren to meet the dog or cat at the shelter. “We want to see how they are here and give adopters feedback on behavior we’re seeing and whether or not we think they will do OK with each other,” she stated, adding that the child’s energy level will be considered. She noted that younger animals are often better with children. When a new animal comes home, it should be given its
own space to decompress and dogs should be taken out often. “They need to get adjusted,” she said, adding that cats especially can be overwhelmed easily. Lastly, Vollmer commented on the element of surprise in getting a new animal. “Sometimes people aren’t expecting a commitment for a present,” she said. “We tell people to make the surprise coming to the shelter to pick out the animal. It’s still a great experience, but it circumvents some potential issues.” More information about the Humane League may be found at https://humanepa.org/ partners/humane-league-of -lancaster-county or by searching for “the Humane League of Lancaster County” on Facebook.
