Mindy Lapp, Jack Herr, and Sean High, founders of Ease the Burden (ETB), have created a brochure to help county residents understand the mission of the organization. “This is a flowchart we made to make it simple for people,” explained Lapp. “It’s a way to fund needs in the Lancaster community by filling in the gaps that might not necessarily be covered by most organizations,” added Herr. ETB was founded to help county residents who do not need help under normal circumstances, but who have come up against a hardship. “We are here for the working class who maybe by a few hundred dollars a year don’t qualify for help,” said Lapp. Hardships

might include health care expenses, housing problems, or other expenses that could squeeze an individual or a family to the breaking point. “This is for the family that is doing everything right,” explained Lapp. “They’re not living beyond their means … (but) they are one furnace breaking down or alternator failing from going under.” To ease the burdens of those in need, ETB founders plan to form partnerships with churches and nonprofit organizations that know the needs of the local community and have the personnel to screen requests and distribute funds appropriately. These organizations would submit grant requests to ETB. “(The organizations) find the need, (do an intake,) and submit the request to us,” said High. See Ease The Burden pg 9

LCPN Sets Dinner Distribution The 33rd annual Lancaster County Project for the Needy (LCPN) holiday dinner distribution will take place on Saturday, Dec. 21, at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The distribution will begin at 8 a.m. The project will distribute more than an estimated 1,200 boxes of turkey dinners with all the trimmings to low-income families throughout Lancaster County. No pre-screening is required. In addition to the distribution at the stadium, LCPN will partner with Elizabethtown Community Homeless Outreach Services, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services, the Columbia Lions, and Solanco Neighborhood Ministries food bank to provide meals to families in designated areas. Hot beverages and food will be handed out to the recipients by the Lancaster County Coalition to End Homelessness. The LCPN is still seeking donations to offset the cost of purchasing the groceries for the dinner. The project relies on individual donations for more than two-thirds of the resources needed to fund the food distribution. The Lancaster County Project for the Needy is a nonprofit group, relying solely on public donations and volunteers. All are welcome to lend a hand. More information is available by calling 717-569-8521.

Welcome 2020 from pg 1 By Chelsea Peifer
On Tuesday, Dec. 31, the community is invited to ring in the new year a few hours early at Welcome 2020, a family-friendly New Year’s Eve celebration organized by volunteers from Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 125 E. High St., Elizabethtown, and the Winters Heritage House Museum, 47 E. High St., Elizabethtown. The family-friendly event is set to take place from 3 to 7 p.m. The event will culminate with the annual raising of a lighted star outside of the church at 7 p.m., immediately followed by a professional fireworks display. According to volunteer Phil Clark, the timing
is significant because at 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time in Elizabethtown, the clock strikes midnight for residents welcoming the new year in Letterkenny, Ireland, which is the sister town of Elizabethtown. Hosting a party earlier in the evening also provides an alternative option for families and anyone who would rather not stay up late for ringing in the new year. “We have an LED light sign with the year under the star, and every year when the star goes up we get a line of people taking pictures with it,” remarked Clark. “That is a neat tradition we didn’t even plan on.” From 3 to 7 p.m., chicken barbecue dinners prepared by Kauffman’s BBQ Chicken will be
Great for those who need a little extra guidance in their workouts in order to reduce risk of injury
available to purchase at the church. Meals will include a halfchicken, a baked potato, fruit, and a bottle of water. Advance tickets for the chicken dinners may be purchased at the church or by calling 717-367-2786. Homemade soup will also be for sale at the church, as well as commemorative bottles of root beer made by Moo-Duck Brewery in Elizabethtown and bottled by church volunteers. Proceeds from the sales of chicken barbecue dinners, soup, and bottled root beer will help to cover the costs of hosting the event. For many years, Christ Lutheran members have sold root beer floats at a stand at the Elizabethtown Fair as a fundraiser, and in recent years proceeds from that effort have helped to fund the New Year’s Eve event. Aside from those food and beverage options, everything at the event is offered free of charge. At Winters Heritage House Museum, people can observe handspinning and hearth cooking demonstrations. Children’s activities and crafts will also be offered. Free activities at the church will include bingo with prizes, games, balloon twisting, face painting, marshmallow roasting, and music
provided by a disc jockey. Free hot dogs, popcorn, and hot cocoa will be available. Emergency vehicles including a fire truck, a police car, and an ambulance will also be onsite for people to see. “It’s a very family-friendly and community-oriented event,” said Clark, noting that planning for the annual celebration begins in July. “We have a really great committee.” The planning committee for Welcome 2020 includes Clark, Pam and Keith Wolgemuth, Vicki Yaider, Pam and Craig Madonna, and Diane Boyd. For more information on Welcome 2020, readers may call 717367-2786 or visit www.christ lutheran-etown.com.

The Lancaster Medical Society Foundation, a foundation of the Lancaster City & County Medical Society, recently awarded its 2019 scholarships to Matthew Bankert of Manheim, Luke Maillie of Lancaster, and Brogan Galbreath of Lititz. Bankert received a $5,000 scholarship; Maillie, $3,000; and Galbreath, $2,000. They were selected through a competitive review process with submissions of more than 20 applications from across Lancaster County. Bankert is a graduate of Washington College and a firstyear medical school student at the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in Middletown, N.Y. Prior to enrolling in medical school, he served as a clinical research coordinator at the Penn State of College of Medicine in the Neuromuscular Division and ALS Center. Diagnosed with a pediatric disability at an early age, Bankert shared that he seeks to treat patients with a high level of compassion and understanding. Maillie graduated from University of Notre Dame and, following a gap year researching access to cancer care in Tanzania as a U.S. Fulbright scholar,

is currently in his first year at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He said that his interest in medicine began to take shape when he was high school volunteer at Penn State Hershey Medical Center and was solidified during a trip to Shirati, Tanzania. In Tanzania, he observed a need to improve access to cancer care. Galbreath, a graduate of Villanova University, is a student at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. When he was a small child, his life was saved by a diagnosis and subsequent treatment at Lancaster General Hospital. As a result of that experience, over time the treating physician

held every January, commemorates the death and honors the life of Glen Lapp, a 1987 LMHS graduate and one of the school’s 2019 Alumni of the Year. The event benefits the Glen D. Lapp Endowment for Student Aid. Glen was killed on Aug. 5, 2010, when he and nine others were ambushed after holding an eye and dental clinic in a remote area of Afghanistan. Glen, who was a nurse, had first traveled to Afghanistan in October 2008 through Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) in partnership with International Assistance Mission. To reach the village where the clinic was held, members of the group first flew, then drove, and then walked, packing their equipment on hired horses. Before becoming a nurse, Glen attended Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), where he played volleyball and earned a degree in math. Following graduation from EMU, Glen worked as the dorm supervisor at LMHS and coached volleyball. He later
completed a Johns Hopkins accelerated course to become a registered nurse in one year. During his adult life, Glen lived in six states, serving people from all walks of life as a registered nurse. He worked at Lancaster Regional Hospital and for the Traveling Nurses Association, which took him to New York City and Oregon. He also worked in a government clinic on a Native American reserve in Supai, Ariz. The tournament is organized by Mark Leaman and Kevin Groff, with help from Glen’s cousin Joel Lapp. Leaman and Groff played volleyball for LMHS and were coached by Glen in 1992 and 1993. The initial tournament held in Glen’s honor was organized by his cousin Tim Lapp. From the tournament and other donations, the endowment has received almost $50,000. Funds are used to provide scholarships to immigrant and refugee children at the school. Play during the tournament is “Glen-style,” which means there are no officials. Glenstyle play will be explained to the teams prior to each tournament. Registration for the tournament is now open, and those interested in taking part are encouraged to sign up soon as the spaces for teams fill up quickly. Readers who wish to learn more about the tournament may visit https://glenlapp volleyball.weebly.com/event -details.html. Pictured on front:

Some soldiers lay motionless, feigning death, and thus were able to survive and later escape. At least 84 American soldiers were killed. The event has been noted as the worst single massacre of American troops in World War II. “I … do hereby recognize the faithful devotion, dedicated service, and personal sacrifice Harold Billow has rendered to his country, community, and comrades, by proclaiming the week of Dec. 15-21, 2019, as Harold Bil-

To mark the sacrifice of his comrades, Billow displays 87 flags in his yard to honor each of the fallen men during every major patriotic holiday each year. In addition to Harold Billow Appreciation Week, Bradley declared Dec. 17 as Malmedy Massacre Remembrance Day in honor of the men who lost their lives or became disabled in their service to their nation 75 years ago. Dec. 17 is also significant to Billow as it was on that date in 1945 that he married his wife,

HSI provides operational support, so Safe Communities can continue to focus on direct prevention work while also building a new organization. The challenges of a new organization include fundraising, which is currently particularly tricky for Safe Communities. The organization had been mostly funded by multi-year grants from national foundations, but these grant programs ended this year. Milagro House was awarded $14,000 for Streamlining Behavioral Health Access: Supporting Women and Children Affected by Trauma and Poverty Initiative. The initiative is a partnership between Milagro House, Clare House, and Good Samaritan Services to restructure education programs serving mothers and children in these shelters, using a traumainformed approach. LOHF’s Children’s Behavioral Health Grants Program aims to elevate the mental well-being of youths and children by supporting local programs that help to answer one or both of two questions: How can we build the talent pipeline in behavioral health care for youths and children in Lancaster County? And how will we improve access to mental wellbeing for youths and children in Lancaster County? Applicants are encouraged to replicate existing models that have been successful and to work collaboratively with others to improve mental health services for individuals from birth to age 26. An additional $100,000 in grant funds will be available. Applications for the spring grant cycle are due by Sunday, March 1, 2020. Taxexempt community benefit organizations serving Lancaster County are eligible to apply. To learn more, readers may visit www.lohf.org.

After helping several congregations deal with incidents of child sexual abuse, Linda Crockett started a program aimed to prevent abuse, not just respond to another crisis. Within a few years, the SafeChurch program, based at the nonprofit Samaritan Counseling Center, had a small staff and a survivor-led network of volunteers, and it was helping churches not only statewide but around the country. According to Samaritan Counseling Center, evaluations and national research studies showed the program was working, and in 2018 the organization added Safe Places, which teaches camps, sports programs, and other youth groups to improve how they protect children. Now the three-person team is building a new organization. The organization has a new name, Safe Communities; a new website; new offices in down-
LOHF (Lancaster Osteopathic Health Foundation) recently approved funding to four Lancaster County children’s behavioral health programs. These programs impact young people who have specific mental health needs and for whom access to mental health care may be particularly challenging. The grants program is an important part of LOHF’s strategy to improve access to behavioral health support for youths and children locally. A grant of $8,300 was awarded to Bethany Christian Services’ Together Facing the Challenge Project. The funds will train and engage 28 staff members from Bethany’s foster care and counseling departments in an evidence-based model for therapeutic foster care that takes a strengths-based educational approach with youths. This will prepare staff to train foster parents and additional staff. COBYS Family Services was awarded $14,081 for increasing child behavioral health services through the Supervision of Unlicensed Therapists program. The funds will provide licensure training and supervision to two new therapists toward their professional licenses, allowing COBYS to expand behavioral health services to 40 more children per week. Mental Health America of Lancaster County was awarded $11,000 to partner with Teen Hope, a program of Samaritan Counseling Center. Painter-Myer The marriage of Brooke Myer and Jordan Painter took place on Sept. 14 at Chiques Church of the Brethren in Manheim. Nathan Myer, father of the bride, officiated at the 3 p.m. ceremony. The bride is the daughter of Nathan and Veronica Myer of Lititz. She graduated from Warwick High School in 2014 and HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College in 2017, and she currently attends Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences. She is employed by Women and Babies Hospital in Lancaster. The groom is the son of David and Lori Painter of Manheim. He graduated from Manheim Central High School in 2011. He is employed by High Steel Structures Inc. in Lancaster. The matron of honor was Paige Haldeman of Manheim, sister of the bride; and the maid of honor was Bridget Esbenshade of Lititz. Bridesmaids were Gwen Myer of Lititz, sister of the bride; Kelly Shenk of Manheim; Ali Good of Manheim; and Abby Wagner of Manheim. The flower girl was Kenzie Keefer of Manheim,
cousin of the groom. Serving as best man was Josh Painter of Manheim, brother of the groom. Groomsmen were Bobby Hershey of Manheim, Cory Fisher of Lititz, Corey Radzik of Manheim, Zach Shay of Manheim, and Jeremy Ginder of Manheim. Ushers were Josh Haldeman of Manheim, brother-in-law of the bride; Nick Myer of Lititz, brother of the bride; and Zach Myer of Lititz, brother of the bride. The ring bearer was Keller Sherer of Manheim. The bride was given in marriage by her father. The reception was held at the barn of a family friend. After a wedding trip to Mexico, the couple resides in Lititz.
The first involved a young couple. When the husband died of cancer, the wife was left with significant medical bills and funeral expenses. Church members spoke to the hospital and funeral home before raising the necessary funds to relieve the widow of the burden. The second situation involved an immigrant couple from Africa. The husband and wife were working and he was attending school, but they were close to having to leave the country because of financial issues. “Someone in the church responded by giving them $500 in cash,” said High. “Ten years later, they are U.S. citizens and homeowners, and he is (working as) a visiting nurse because of that $500.” ETB founders want area residents to know that the grain bin supplies are here for them. “The emphasis is on grassroots … local,” said Herr. “Any donations to Ease the Burden stay here in

“Someone might not be able to pay their rent, and (they) come to a church for help,” said High. “They may not have the funds, but we could bridge that gap.” Lapp agreed, adding, “ We want to connect churches and ministries to partner with us to get needs met.” High went on to explain that ETB is based on the Old Testament story of Joseph, who filled the grain bins during the years of plenty. “When the famine hit, the grain bins were full,” he said. “That is our concept. We will raise funds to fill the grain bin, and we will have resources there.” High went on to say that when a partner organization finds a need and submits a grant request, ETB should be able to react quickly. ETB founders were inspired by occurrences at Stumptown Mennonite Church, 2813 Stumptown Road, Bird-in-Hand, where High and Herr attend.

Bear Cub Scouts are invited to join naturalist Ann Strauss in working toward a Bear Adventure requirement, and they will be able to complete all but one of the necessary badge requirements. Participants should dress for the weather, with shoes for hiking. Winter Bird Count, for people of all ages, will take place on Saturday, Dec. 28, from 9 to 11 a.m. The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) and Lancaster County Parks are co-sponsoring a Christmas Bird Count for Kids
(CBC4KIDS). The CBC4KIDS is a citizen scientist activity that gets children and adults outdoors during the Christmas holidays. It is an abbreviated version of the Audubon Christmas Bird Count for adults. Munchkin Science: Winter Hike, for children ages 3 to 5, will be offered from 1 to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 31. Naturalist Ann Strauss will lead a hike on the Scout Trail and complete the loop. As they hike, participants will learn about animals and plants in winter and what is still active and what is not.
Salvation Army Kicks Off Fundraising Campaign The Salvation Army Lancaster Corps recently kicked off its annual Red Kettle Campaign, the nonprofit’s largest annual fundraising event. The campaign will end on Tuesday, Dec. 24. Proceeds will go toward providing food, toys and winter wear for more than 6,000 individuals from the greater Lancaster area in the Christmas season, as well as supporting Salvation Army programs throughout the year, according to Maj. Dean Satterlee, commanding officer. So far this season, the organization has assisted more than 4,100 people, including 1,900 children. This year, the Salvation Army has set a fundraising goal of $165,000. However, due to many contributing factors, including a decreased number of locations, organizers recognize that meeting that goal may be difficult. Community members and businesses are encouraged to support the effort, which will benefit those in need in the local area. Community members are invited not only to support the campaign financially, but also to volunteer their time to receive donations at kettles. Groups from businesses, churches, nonprofits and other organizations are welcome to participate. For more information, readers may contact the Salvation Army at 717-397-7565, visit www.facebook.com/the salvationarmylancastercorps/ or email EPA_LancasterCitadel @use.salvationarmy.org.

Coleman Memorial Chapel, 1980 Furnace Hills Pike, Lititz, will present a “Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols” as its candlelight service on Sunday, Dec. 22, at 7 p.m. The church’s candlelight service is a tradition dating back to the early 1900s. The “Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols” was composed by E.W. Benson, the Anglican bishop of Truro, in 1880 and is based on ancient sources for Christmas Eve. Guests will hear the story of
Jesus’ birth, from the Garden of Eden to the coming of the Wise Men and finally the incarnation as related in the Gospel of John. The service will include the singing of carols, as well as fellowship, and the church’s original oil lamps and candelabra will be lit. Refreshments will be served following the service. For more information, readers may contact the church at 717626-6933 or search for “Coleman Memorial Chapel” on Facebook.

Susan Hershey (far left), director of the South Central Pennsylvania Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR); Suzanne Whallon (second from left), regent of the Witness Tree Chapter of Pennsylvania DAR; G. Edward LeFevre (second from right) from the Lancaster County Chapter, PSSOR; and Nancy LeFevre, secretary of the Donegal Chapter of Pennsylvania DAR, were present on Oct. 19 at the rededication of the DAR obelisk monument. The obelisk was placed in 1899 to honor the French and Indian War and Revolutionary War patriots from western Lancaster County at the Donegal Presbyterian Church where the Witness Tree event occurred on Sept. 7, 1777. The monument has been cleaned by the Sons and Color Guard as a special project. Harvard Wood prepared the dedication plaque, and Michael Douchorty performed the cleaning. Edwin and Mrs. Miller, LCCPSSOR, provided a renewed landscaping.
