After completing her threeyear career this fall, senior Nicole Hanselman, a member of the women’s soccer team at Elmira College, Elmira, N.Y., was honored with a spot on the Empire 8 Conference Sportswoman of the Year team. The honor was announced on Nov. 12. As a member of the Empire 8 Sportswoman of the Year Team, Hanselman was recognized for competing with honor and integrity, which the conference emphasizes as an essential component of a student-athlete’s experience in conjunction with an institution’s educational mission. Hanselman became a key cog for the Soaring Eagles after joining the team as a sophomore and pieced together her best campaign as a senior. Hanselman started in all 16 games and ended the 2019 season tied for third on the team with five points (two goals and one assist). Her best performance came in Elmira’s victory over Alfred State at Campus Field, as she scored one goal and assisted on Taylor Keane’s game-winning marker in overtime. The native of Manheim ended her career with 46 appearances, four goals, and one assist. Off the field, Hanselman’s work in the classroom helped the team earn three consecutive United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Awards. She was honored with the Wayne Moschetti Memorial Award at the 2018-19 Elmira College Athletics Awards Reception.
ainbow’s End Youth Services staff and board of directors would like to express our deep thanks and appreciation for all the support from the community in 2019.

Donors May Reap Rewards Giving to charity is a selfless act that is worthy of recognition. That recognition can come in many forms, and donors should know that even the “tax man” likes to reward men and women who donate to charity. The United States rewards donors with tax credits. The financial services firm H&R Block notes that, in the United States, taxpayers can deduct donations made to qualified charities. Such deductions must be itemized, but they can greatly reduce a person’s taxable income. Laws regarding donations and tax deductions can be difficult to understand, so donors should always discuss their donations with their financial planners or tax preparers before filing their returns. Some general information regarding donations and deductions that can be useful to prospective donors follows. In the United States, donations must go to one of three

types of groups in order to qualify for deductions. Donations made to nonprofit religious groups, nonprofit educational groups, and nonprofit charitable groups, which are often referred to as 501(c)(3) organizations, may qualify for deductions. Noncash donations are also eligible for deductions in the United States. In most instances in the United States, charitable organizations must provide donors with certain information in order for donations to be deducted. A receipt that indicates the organization’s name and address and the date and location of the donation must be submitted. In addition, it must include the amount of the donation when donating cash or, in the case of noncash donations, a reasonably detailed description of the items donated. Donating to charity is a selfless endeavor that may lead to rewards when donors file their tax returns.

Lancaster Farmland Trust Holds Annual Dinner Lancaster Farmland Trust (LFT) celebrated farmland preservation and Lancaster County agriculture at its annual dinner on Oct. 30. More than 260 friends, farmers, and supporters attended to honor the commitment the Lancaster County community has made to the land. The event, held at the Eden Resort and Suites, raised more than $160,000 for farmland preservation. Jeff Swinehart, chief operating officer for LFT, announced that over the past year, the organization worked with 11 farm families to preserve 650 acres of Lancaster County farmland. Since its start in 1988, the nonprofit has protected a total of 504 farms covering more than 30,600 acres. Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding attended the event and spoke about the ongoing importance
of farmland preservation and Lancaster County’s foundational role in the movement in Pennsylvania. He cited the partnership between the Lancaster County Agricultural Preserve Board and Lancaster Farmland Trust as a model for achieving success in preserving what is special about Lancaster County. The highlight of the evening was the annual Acres for Auction, at which attendees entered “bids” to preserve two family farms. During this year’s successful “auction,” LFT raised enough money to preserve a 77-acre farm in Drumore Township and a 50-acre farm in Elizabeth Township. Farm families in attendance received a token of appreciation for their commitment to farmland preservation. Also during the evening’s festivities, LFT honored partners and
volunteers who contributed to another successful year for LFT. The Amos Funk Spirit of Cooperation Award was presented to Salisbury Township for its partnership with LFT to improve water quality on farms in the municipality. The Darvin Boyd Service to Agriculture Award went to Christ Taylor, a longtime supporter, board of trustees member, and preserved farm owner, for his efforts to preserve farmland. Kay Collier received the “Consider It Done” Award for generously contributing her time and talents to support the mission of LFT. The event saw the support of the local and regional business community, as well. More than 30 businesses supported the event, including Turkey Hill Dairy as the Heritage Sponsor.
Faulkner Supports Angel Tree Program Faulkner Chevrolet helped spearhead a campaign, alongside Faulkner BMW, in conjunction with The Salvation Army to bring Christmas cheer to 75 children throughout Lancaster County. It was the first collaboration between the two Faulkner dealerships and the local Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program. The Angel Tree Program is an annual event. Children ages of 2 to 18 can request gifts, and the Lancaster community supports the efforts to grant their wishes. Children provide their size for a new jacket and request hats, gloves, and scarves to keep them warm during the winter months. Requested toys include crafts, board games, dolls, stuffed animals, and more. The goal is

Lantz Named Marketing Manager
Donating To Charity Wisely
Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation (LPAF) has named Rachael Lantz as its marketing manager. In this role, Lantz is responsible for developing and executing marketing strategies for LPAF’s programs, including the Summer Music Series and Art Festival. Lantz brings nearly 12 years of marketing experience to LPAF, including her most recent position as marketing manager for the Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority. Lantz also served in marketing positions for nonprofit organizations in her hometown of Pensacola, Fla., including Habitat for Humanity, United Way and Council on Aging.
Donations from private citizens are the lifeblood of many nonprofit organizations. Without donations from millions of well-intentioned individuals, many charities would not be able to fulfill their missions. When donating to charitable organizations, donors typically want to know their donations will make a difference. With a little pre-donation research and a few smart giving strategies, prospective donors can make sure their donations ultimately end up doing the most good. Donors should refine their online searches. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends searching online for a cause one cares about but adding certain terms to the search before choosing a charity. For example, if someone is passionate about helping the homeless, instead of entering “charities for the homeless” into the search engine, search for “highly rated charities for the homeless.” Such a search may uncover red flags about certain organizations and direct donors to the most reputable charity possible. A charity should be vetted before donating. Transparency is important when choosing a

Free Throw Contest Set All boys and girls ages 9 to 14 are invited to participate in the local level of competition for the 2020 Knights of Columbus (K of C) Free Throw Championship sponsored by the Knights of Columbus St. Philip the Apostle Council 17028. The local competition will be held on Friday, Jan. 10, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the gymnasium at St. Philip the Apostle Church, 2111 Millersville Pike, Lancaster. The Knights of Columbus
Free Throw Championship is sponsored annually, with winners progressing through local, district, and state competitions. International champions are announced by the K of C international headquarters based on scores from the state-level competitions. All contestants on the local level are recognized for their participation in the event. Participants are required to furnish proof of age and written parental consent.
charity. A charity should willingly share information such as how donation dollars are spent and the programs that have been established to help it meet its mission. Such information should be readily available on the organization’s website. The FTC recommends donors learn how much of their donations will be used to provide direct support to the programs. The FTC also recommends being suspicious of charities that do not provide detailed information about their missions and programs. Vetting charities is important, but donors should not feel like they have to do all that legwork on their own. Various organizations, including Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance, Charity Navigator, and CharityWatch, exist to protect donors and ensure they give wisely. Local government regulators also may be able to provide information about charities to help donors avoid fraud. Charitable donations help millions of people every day. Donors can protect themselves and ensure their money is used wisely by doing their homework before giving to nonprofit organizations.

personal hygiene, microorganisms, and sources of contamination during, before, and after harvest. The Extension team began by collecting, assessing, and archiving preexisting educational materials related to FSMA and Farm Food Safety education available at the Penn State website. Team members identified gaps in programming in regard to content and methodology. As a result, 10 articles and two fact sheets were translated. The team reviewed and updated the Food Safety Training Kit and the GAP posters to match new public service announcement curricula and created a catalog of available information in English and Spanish. With support from stakeholders, the Extension determined where the greatest needs in programming were and then developed new educational materials and workshops specific to various industry groups. With funding from USDA NIFA award number 201770020-27236, Penn State Extension educators from the Food Safety and Horticulture teams developed bilingual produce safety educational materials and delivered trainings to Latino fresh produce growers and farmworkers in Pennsylvania. Maria Gorgo-Gourovitch was the principal investigator of the grant. Other members of the team were Megan Chawner, Tara Baugher, Jeffrey Stoltzfus, Don Seifrit, Christi Graver, professor of food science Dr. Luke LaBorde, and now retired extension educator Lee Stivers. Congress entrusted the FDA to implement the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). This new law changed the food safety system from one that responds to contamination to one that aims to prevent it in the first place. Among the suite of new regulations issued under the law is “Standards for the Growing, Harvesting, Packing, and Holding of Produce for Human Consumption” (USFDA, 2013), commonly known as the Produce Safety Rule. The Produce Safety Rule poses new regulatory challenges to the fresh produce industry in Pennsylvania and across the country. Latino growers and farmworkers had an unmet need for accessible Food Safety and Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) information, education, and resources. In order to provide short, easy-to-understand information, the Extension focused its educational materials and trainings on topics such as
