Unstoppable Determination Spohn Earns Eagle Scout Rank While Adapting To Vision Loss By Chelsea Peifer

During the summer before his freshman year at Manheim Central High School (MCHS), Nicolas Spohn began researching and planning for his Eagle Scout project. That was also when he began to notice changes in his vision, with everything becoming blurrier. His mother, Livia, and younger brother, Stefan, were already

living with Leber’s hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON), and soon Nicolas was diagnosed with the inherited form of vision loss as well. “Your central vision is affected, and it gets blurrier over time,” explained Nicolas, who just completed 10th grade at MCHS. “Mine has stabilized over the past year.” Though he cannot drive, Nicolas makes his way through the halls of MCHS completely on his own and only uses a cane when he’s visiting places he is unfamiliar with. The question he most often

hears from peers is simply, “What can you see?” “For people who have a vision disability, it’s hard to explain what they see,” Nicolas said. While he can see the general outline of objects, he cannot discern details. Recognizing faces is difficult, so he has already learned to identify people by voices and perceive their expression by tone and volume. Although the vision loss has meant that Nicolas had to stop playing soccer - a sport he loved and played for eight years - being part of Boy Scout Troop 47 in Manheim has remained a staple See Eagle Scout pg 4

Bring On The Chi Cha!

Ride To Support Veteran Service Canines By Chelsea Peifer

By Chelsea Peifer

The eighth annual Chiques C h a l l e n g e , dubbed by regular participants as the “Chi Cha,” will take place on Saturday, Aug. 11. Hosted by the Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce (SVCC), the duathlon event includes a run on part of the Northwest River Trail and through the streets of historic Marietta, followed by a kayak journey on the Susquehanna River. Competitors will begin at the Columbia River Park, 41 Walnut St., Columbia. Perry Ligon of Harrisburg is one of several competitors who have participated in the duathlon since it began. “This will be my eighth year, and I guess the real challenge for me comes from the river,” said Ligon. “I’m an ultramarathon runner, so I consider the run the easy part. The river, however, can hold surprises.” See Chiques Challenge pg 2

Team members who are kayaking will be shuttled to the Marietta Boat Launch. Runners will take off at 8:30 a.m. The approximately 4-mile course will follow the Northwest River Trail from Riverfront Park to its end in Marietta, then runners will continue under a railroad tunnel onto Decatur Street and throughout Marietta before finishing at the access point of the Marietta Boat Launch. A water station and restroom will be available for participants at the boat access point, where their kayaks will be waiting. Kayakers will then paddle a marked course for approximately 2 and a half miles down the Susquehanna River to the finish at Columbia River Park. Chiques Challenge will end with a brief awards ceremony at approximately 10:30 a.m. For individual entrants, trophies and cash prizes will be awarded to the firstplace male and female overall finishers in the 40 and under and over 40 divisions. For team entrants, cash prizes will be distributed to the first-place finishers in two categories: teams with an average age of 40 and under and teams with an average age over 40. Medals will also be awarded to the top male and female runners, to the top male and female kayakers, and to the first- and second-place male and female finishers in six age brackets. Plus, three cash prizes will be awarded in a post-race drawing using bib numbers. Chiques Challenge proceeds support SVCC and its efforts as a nonprofit organization to serve the communities of Marietta, Wrightsville, and Columbia.

“One year the water level was low and obstacles seemed to be everywhere from the exposed rocks that litter the river’s bottom, continued Ligon. “Another year the river was high and flowing fast. There were just a few obstacles, they were submerged, and that may have been my fastest year in the kayak. Two years ago the humidity was oppressive, but last year’s weather was perfect from what I recall. Individuals may register to complete the race alone or as a team with one participant handling the running portion and the other taking on the kayaking. A team of two counts as one entry. Participants must be age 16 or older. To register, interested individuals may visit www.parivertowns.com or call 717-684-5249 by Friday, July 27. Space is limited to 150 participants, and registration may close earlier if the maximum is reached. A T-shirt is included with the entry fee, and professional split timing will be provided. Volunteers will be stationed at the Marietta Boat Launch, Robert Mowrer Drive, Marietta, beginning at 6:30 a.m. to assist with personal kayak drop-off. All kayaks must have a valid launch permit per the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, and each kayaker is required to wear a life vest equipped with a whistle. Kayak rentals are available through Shank’s Mare Outfitters or Chiques Rock Outfitters and can be delivered to the site. in his life, and nothing was going to stop him from earning his Eagle Scout rank. Someone from Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Manheim, where Nicolas attends, suggested installing a concrete floor in an outside building that belongs to the church as a potential Eagle Scout project, and he ran with the idea. The approximately 11-by-13-foot building was previously used by the old high school and still had a dirt floor. In addition to installing a new concrete floor, Nicolas decided to add two new

Aside from achieving the rank of Eagle Scout at a young age, Nicolas was also voted to serve as Senior Patrol Leader for his troop as a freshman. He is humble about his accomplishments. “Getting your project done isn’t necessarily hard. It’s just that a lot of kids don’t put the time into it and never finish it out, Nicolas said. “This is something I’ve always wanted to do. It does take a lot of perseverance and organization. This fall, Nicolas will tackle a new challenge as a member of the MCHS cross-country team. His coach has already found a guide runner who will accompany him through practice runs and meets to give him direction as far as turns and obstacles. In the meantime,

who have suffered from PTSD. It’s something that’s been going on for generations. Readjusting to civilian life can be challenging at best, with unique hurdles to overcome, and Laughman said that service dogs help in numerous ways as veterans learn to establish a new normal in their lives. “Having a dog that is there to serve you 24/7 is huge, said Laughman, noting that the loyalty of a dog can be healing. Laughman also said that while many combat veterans may tend to feel paranoid about their surroundings - particularly in large crowds - service dogs can be

trained to help ease some of that tension. For instance, the canines are taught to “Cover Your 6, which means they will guard the area in the six o’clock position, or to the rear, of their handler’s viewpoint and warn the handler when someone is approaching. When it comes to anxiety disorders, Laughman said that service dogs are able to break the handler’s concentration and provide a distraction. Nicolas has been practicing on his family’s treadmill at home. In June he attended a week of camp at the Helen L. Diller Vacation Home for Blind Children and had some of the counselors who are mainly college students accompany him on runs throughout Avalon, N.J. “A few of the counselors weren’t as used to running as I was, so I kind of made them get in shape, said Nicolas with a laugh. When reflecting on his son’s achievements thus far, Kyle said, “I have no doubt that whatever Nicolas decides to do with his life, he will approach it with the same determined and hardworking attitude that has served him so we’ll since he lost his eyesight.

lights inside. He did all of the research, planning, and coordinating for the project, including finding volunteers to complete the labor. Nicolas’ father, Kyle Spohn, said that his role in the project was merely to offer suggestions and guidance - and little things like reading price tags for supplies at the hardware store so Nicolas could then make the decisions. “Nicolas never allowed his disability to become a liability. I think that is what makes me most proud of him, said Kyle. “Many times it would have been easier to use his disability to take the easy way out, but that is not the way Nicolas lives his life - that is something all of us can live by.

canine. Each dog receives basic training beforehand, but Laughman said from there the veteran works with a professional handler to train the dog according to whatever his or her personal needs may be. According to Laughman, an added bonus to this setup is that it provides the participating veterans with a welcomed sense of community. “You miss a lot of the camaraderie you had in the military when you get out, Laughman reflected. “By combining guys in the same setting who are at different levels, they realize they’re not alone or singled out with whatever they’re going through. The nonprofit organization works closely with the Lebanon and Coatesville VA medical centers and has connected 35 veterans with service dogs since it began. Each recipient has been a veteran from the central Pennsylvania area, but Laughman said he receives inquiries from all over the country. On Saturday, Aug. 11, the community is invited to the third annual Veteran Service Canine Ride, an event where all proceeds will support the work of the volunteer-run nonprofit organization. The motorcycle ride is coordinated by members of the Marietta Legion Riders, Wrightsville Legion Riders, and AMVETS Riders Post 19. “To combine with multiple organizations and across counties like that is phenomenal, Laughman stated. The ride will start at the American Legion, 19 S. Gay St., Marietta. Registration will begin at 11 a.m. Kickstands will go up at 1 p.m., and participants will weave through Lancaster County before crossing the Susquehanna River into York County to stop at several locations, including the Veteran Service Canines training facility, which was donated to the organization by a local business. The ride will conclude at the Kreutz Creek Valley Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 7045, 341 Yorkana Road, York, for an event that will include a vehicle and motorcycle show, a live band, a pig roast, vendors, and more.
