The Torch to host open mic night anniversary BY FRANCINE FULTON

The Roland Zimmerman Family will celebrate the 12th anniversary of its open mic night at The Torch Community Center in Morgantown on Sunday, Feb. 4. Registration for participating

musicians will be at 6:30 p.m., followed by live music at 7 p.m. Open mic began more than a decade ago when Zimmerman approached Ed Kurtz, director of The Torch, for permission to host the event. “My family sang at retirement See The Torch pg 4

of the traditional subjects, and students take part in outdoor recess in the school playground behind the church. “ We have Bible class, which is required. However, we are teaching creation, and that has an impact on the way that we teach science,” said Stoltzfus. “We believe that the Bible is the Word of God and that it is true, so that speaks a lot to history because the Bible has a lot of history in it.” One of the school’s focuses is to aid students who need help in specific school subjects they might not have excelled at in the past. “We have around 30 students, and we have 10 teachers,” noted Stoltzfus. “They are not all fulltime, but one of the things that we try to really provide is individualized instruction for remedial students.” At lunchtime, children enjoy a meal together. “We have a kitchen, and we have volunteer cooks that See HBCA pg 3

Chester County 4-H members take part in Day of Sewing BY FRANCINE FULTON

Members of Chester County 4-H recently joined the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Sewing Guild (ASG) for a Community Service Day of Sewing, during which participants made pillowcases for hospitalized children. T he Day of Sewing was held simultaneously at three locations, including in west

Philadelphia and at St. James Lutheran Church in Pottstown. The local event took place at the Chester County 4-H Penn State Extension office, located in the Chester County Government Ser vices Center in West Chester. In 2011, the church invited HBCA to use the building, so the school became a reg istered pr ivate school and nonprofit organization. The curriculum includes all

ne of the first things that a visitor may notice when entering Honey Brook Christian Academy (HBCA) is a secure locker in the main hall where students are required to keep their cellphones during the school day. There are also no brown bag lunches at HBA; rather, students share a homecooked meal each day served buffet-style in the school lunchroom. Additionally, students are also responsible for helping to clean their school, vacuuming and performing other weekly housekeeping duties. These are just some of the aspects of HBC A that make it a unique place to educate children in kindergarten through grade 12. The school, housed at Rockville Mennonite Church, 210 Cupola Road, Honey Brook, currently serves students who

come from Honey Brook and the Coatesville Area School District, although public busing is provided for students who live in Pequea Valley, Daniel Boone, Owen J. Roberts, Octorara and ELANCO school districts. Peter Stoltzfus, who is in his eighth year as principal,

whole grains, and 25% protein. Select an array of colorful foods that will provide most of the nutrients needed. - Choose fiber-rich foods. Fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and legumes are good sources of fiber. Fiber helps people maintain digestive health and can help a person to feel fuller longer, reducing the potential for overeating, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. - Note how you feel after eating. Create a food journal where you jot down notes about how you feel after eating certain foods. If you notice that certain foods or ingredients trigger adverse reactions, it may be worth avoiding that type of food or looking for an alternative. Stomach upset or bloating after eating dairy, for example, may indicate an intolerance for lactose. - Explore the Mediterranean diet. While it’s wise to avoid fad diets that often produce shortterm but unsustainable results, the Mediterranean diet has stood the test of time. According to the authors of a study published in

JAMA Network Open in October 2023, middle-aged and older adults who were overweight or obese and had metabolic syndrome lost visceral fat (belly fat) and showed a greater reduction in the percentage of total fat while adhering to a Mediterranean diet. They also had delayed loss of lean body mass, which often comes with aging. Mediterranean diets prioritize legumes, seafood, vegetables, and healthful fats like olive oil. - Control portion sizes. Sometimes it’s not what a person eats but how much he or she eats that affects health. Weighing and measuring food can help a person control portions and understand how many calories he or she is consuming each day. The National Institutes of Health says eating plans that favor 1,200 to 1,500 calories per day for women and 1,500 to 1,800 for men are good targets to lose weight at a healthy pace when combined with moderate exercise. - Focus on adding healthy foods to your diet rather than on trying to avoid detrimental foods. The greater quantity of healthy foods are eaten, the more unhealthy ones will fall by the wayside. Focusing on the positive can help people feel less restricted by healthy eating plans. Balanced eating is a major component of a healthy lifestyle. While there are many fad diets, eating plans with a proven track record that are supported by the medical community may be the best bet.

Reading is a popular pastime, and self-proclaimed book nerds and those who look forward to the next book club gathering can rejoice knowing that a good story isn’t the only benefit associated with this activity. In fact, there are numerous health benefits to cracking a book. For one thing, reading slows cognitive decline. Natural aging results in a decline in memory and brain function over time, but according to research published in the journal Neurology, reading may help slow that process and keep minds sharp. Reading also improves concentration and focus. Technology draws a lot of attention, and those fast processing times and almost

Athletes train hard with a goal of performing at their peak when competition begins. Exercise is beneficial for the body, but at times athletes may be in jeopardy of overdoing it in pursuit of doing their best. Johns Hopkins Medicine says many sports injuries can be prevented with proper precautions. To begin with, athletes should wear the right gear. Using the right equipment or gear and wearing supportive shoes can help prevent injury, as can using safety items like helmets and protective pads. Athletes should ensure that all equipment is properly fitted and replace items if they become damaged or worn out.

Also, a study of 1,890 identical twins in the United Kingdom found that the twins who had early reading skills seemingly had more positive results for higher intelligence later in life. Relaxation is also a common benefit of reading. A 2009 study by Sussex University researchers showed that reading may reduce stress by as much as 68%. Furthermore, if people read paper books rather than e-books before bedtime, this activity takes a person away from screens. Screens can contribute to losing 20 minutes of sleep on average, according to research published in Pediatrics. Maintaining flexibility and strength is also important. The experts at the Mount Sinai health organization say it is extremely important to perform dynamic stretches before starting a physical activity, as cold muscles are more vulnerable to injury. Also, exercises that strengthen the muscles used for the sport are beneficial, particularly those that target the core. Core-strengthening exercises improve balance and stability, which is essential in all sports. Athletes should learn the proper techniques for playing a sport or engaging in a physical activity like strength training. Poor form on the field or in the gym can put athletes at risk for injury, says the University of Rochester Medical Center. Listening to one’s body is another key to staying injury-free. Aches and pains in joints or muscles that do not improve in a day or two could be signs that a more serious condition is developing. Do not attempt to power

through pain, which may cause serious issues and significant, long-term injuries. UConn Health Orthopedics and Sports Medicine says rest is a critical component of avoiding injury. One to two rest days should be built into the weekly exercise regimen. One option is to make a rest day a recovery day, instead. This choice means engaging in gentle exercise like walking, swimming or yoga. Athletes can reduce their injury risk by following some tried and true techniques. scan this code for more local news townlively.com

Ideas for healthy eating Diet and exercise are the key components of maintaining a healthy weight and protecting against chronic disease. According to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, eating smart and being active have similar effects, including reducing risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, some cancers, and diabetes. In addition, these healthy living strategies can improve personal appearance and can improve overall well-being, helping people live longer and maintain their independence. People may wonder how to eat better when faced with many diets, each of which promises great results. Navigating the options can be confusing, and there is no magic formula to eating better. Common sense can come into play when attempting to eat better, and individuals also can consider the following strategies to make a diet work for them as they seek to live healthier. - Eat colorful, varied, nutritionally dense foods. There are ladies from the church who volunteer their time to prepare meals.” Students and their families enjoy a fall party in October as well as a spring picnic. Students also take part in fun activities; for example, last fall, students made and bottled applesauce as a fundraiser.“We made about 990 quarts of applesauce,”Stoltzfus reported.“A lot of people came in and bought some, and we kept about 100 quarts for school.” Additionally, students take part in work projects. For example, the students mulch the flower beds at the church, and they split firewood and sell bundles as a fundraiser; last year, they used the proceeds to build a gaga pit for the playground. Additional free firewood is provided to local senior citizens. “Hands-on activities are really important to us. I grew up on a dairy

I wanted to see a Christian open mic and not just secular music,” Zimmerman recalled. “I knew Ed and I brought up the idea to hold the open mic on a weeknight, but he said it has to be a Sunday night because a lot of churches don’t have (activities) on Sunday nights.” Today, an average of six groups perform during open mic, including Zimmerman and his son, Ryan. “(The number of groups) varies. Sometimes we have more or less,” Zimmerman noted. “On Sunday, (Jan. 7), only three people signed up, so we sat in a circle together and sang, so that was a little different.” The Torch, which offers a small coffeehouse setting, includes a small stage, room for tuning instruments, a keyboard for pianists, four microphones with stands, sheet

music stands and stools. There are guidelines that musicians are asked to follow on open mic night. For example, all music must be performed acoustically, and no drum sets are permitted. A cappella music is also encouraged. “I am not against electric guitars and drums, but it’s a small setting and we don’t want anything that is too loud,” Zimmerman shared. He added that setting up amplifiers and other devices between performers would be time consuming. There are also requirements about conservative attire for both men and women. “I came from a more conservative Mennonite background and there is not an opportunity in the church setting to show your talent,” said Zimmerman. “(Open mic) is an opportunity to get people (to perform). I have conservative dress standards because I want people to feel welcome.” Musicians may perform music they have composed as well as traditional hymns or songs. “Some people play original music. One lady sings hymns. There is a variety, and that’s fine,” Zimmerman shared. “It is open to everyone. You don’t have to audition or anything.” Through the years the event has grown in size with additional musicians and audience members.

My thought is to use my life’s journey to illustrate the life of obedience which includes moments of victory, moments of defeat, moments of loss, and moments of joy. Doug Myer began his management career with WDAC Radio Company in 1999 and currently oversees all operations. He is a graduate of the Moody Bible Institute and Lancaster Bible College, where he met his wife, Janet. They live in Strasburg and have three children and three grandchildren and counting.

The Torch

To prepare for the Day of Sewing, ASG club members created precut pieces of fabric. During the event, attendees had to form pillowcase cuffs and then sew the pieces together.“You want it to be sturdy, so we finish the seams on the side and the bottom, so they don’t fray,” explained ASG member Barb Leech, adding that the pillowcases were created in fun fabrics designed for children and donated by club members. Those interested in making pillowcases for the charity may visit www .caseforsmiles.org for instructions. “The charity (formerly known as ConKerr Cancer) was started by a woman whose son passed away from cancer. It has gone through several name changes, but they are still doing the same thing,”Leech explained.

distributed through the Ryan’s Case For Smiles organization. “The group finished 85 pillowcases on (Jan. 6) and will have over 100 total completed by the end of the week,” reported Toni Stuetz, Extension educator.
