It’s your move: Village Library offers Chess Club

“Not everyone can play soccer, football, (do) karate or play basketball, but everyone can do this,” said Joe Cress, who leads the Chess Club at the Village Library of Morgantown.

The Chess Club began at the library in the fall of 2024, and after a hiatus, it returned on Jan. 18. It will be held every Saturday at 10:30 a.m. through March.

Joe, who learned the game as a youngster, has been playing for at least 50 years. He recommends that Chess Club participants be at least age 10. “People can come and learn how to play chess; we are

willing to teach them,” he stated. Those who already play the game are also invited to attend.

Joe was accompanied to the most recent Chess Club by his nephew, AJ Cress, 14, who

started playing at age 12. When asked if it is hard to learn to play chess, AJ responded, “It’s hard to master how to move. You can learn what the pieces do, but there is a lot of theory behind the moves and different strategies

you can use,” he replied. “It’s a lot about recognizing patterns in the board and knowing what to do.”

“It takes time to learn how to move the pieces,” Joe added. “(The hard part is learning) how to put everything together and move the pieces and accomplish you goal, which is to checkmate the other player.”

“You learn by playing, playing, playing and practice, practice, practice,” Joe added.

While both play chess online, Joe and AJ said they prefer playing with an opponent face to face. “I prefer the real chess,” said AJ.

“I don’t concentrate as much playing (online),” Joe said, noting that he has played for chess clubs

Pet rescue seeks fosters, adopters

All 4 Paws Rescue, a Chester Countybased nonprofit organization that rescues animals in need, is currently in need of fosters willing to take in cats and dogs that are waiting for their forever homes as well as adopters looking to provide a loving home to a pet.

“The most important thing for all rescue organizations are fosters and adopters,” said Kristen Geddes, founder and director of All 4 Paws. “The more fosters we have, the more lives we can save. Without adopters, we can’t keep taking in dogs.”

Geddes founded the rescue in May of 2009. “I had a corporate job 15 or 20 years ago and started volunteering at a local rescue and became passionate about

Residents can get free help with their tax returns

As tax filing season approaches, Chester County residents are reminded that their taxes can be prepared free of charge through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program, which is offered locally by Life Transforming Ministries (LTM) in Coatesville. This year, tax preparation sites are located in Coatesville, Downingtown, Exton, Kennett Square, Phoenixville, Pottstown, Royersford and West Chester. The sites opened on Jan. 27 and will

remain open through Tuesday, April 15.

VITA is a program offered by the IRS to partner organizations, like LTM. “VITA offers free federal and state tax preparation for hard-working families or people who do not earn high wages,” said Lyneesha Johnson, who is in charge of marketing and communication for LTM.

Those who choose to make use of the program are first asked to visit www.ChesterCountyFree Taxes.org and choose “For Tax Filer,” then select “Items You

“We completed 2,508 returns last year resulting in an economic impact of over $3.7 million back into the community,” Johnson reported.

She recalled one client in particular who received a large refund. “Our director, Donna, shared a story about one family who wound up getting $20,000. They have a big family and lots of children. That is extreme, but it happened,” she said. “People have no idea that they qualified for credits, including the Earned Income Tax Credit. grade 12 were invited to create an original piece of art to show their appreciation for law enforcement.

Anna’s winning photo, which she completed with markers, depicts a police car traveling along a road along with a written message that reads, “Dear police officers. Thank you for keeping us safe!”

For winning the firsttime competition held this past summer, Anna received a certificate of recognition, a photo with Chester County Sheriff Kevin D. Dykes and a tour of his office, as well as a gift basket filled with art supplies. Anna, 8, was accompanied to the sheriff’s office by her parents, Jennifer and Jonathan Zerbe, and her sister, Elizabeth Zerbe.

No appointments are necessary, and donations are accepted for VITA’s local sponsor, Life Transforming Ministries.

“I think it has been an amazing experience for me and the kids,” said Kristin Inman of Elverson when describing her experience fostering cats for the Animal Rescue League of Berks County (ARL). “It is a great learning experience, a great way to find empathy and learn how to care for something. It fills our hearts.”

Shoes & Boots For The Whole Family

As part of the ARL foster program, individuals and families provide a temporary home for rescued animals until the cats or dogs can find their forever homes. The foster program not only frees up space at the shelter, but also provides individualized care to animals in need.

“Come summer and spring, the shelters are so crowded and are overflowing (with adoptable animals). It is not an ideal environment for animals.

and played against professionals as well as at an international chess tournament. “You don’t know who you (are playing). When you see the person, you want to win.”

The Chess Club has the use of six magnetic chess boards that were donated to library. “They are top-notch chess boards,” Joe said.

“They have wooden pieces and are magnetic on the bottom, so they don’t fall over as easily,” AJ added.

Joe encourages parents to bring their children to the library to learn to play. “It’s really a good game for young people to start playing,” he stated. “You are not on the computer, not playing games on the phone and it definitely helps your mind.”

He recalled establishing a Chess Club at a school

for resource students. “We taught them how to play chess, and the teachers actually thanked me and said it made them better students,” Joe noted.

Joe hopes to grow the club at the library because he enjoys teaching as well as playing those who already know the game. “We want to promote chess, and, down the road, we hope to have a chess marathon,” he shared.

The Village Library is located at 207 N. Walnut St., Morgantown. For more information about the club, contact library director Carol Donahue at 610-2861022 or smolibrary@gmail .com. Jennifer said she read about the contest in a July edition of the Community Courier. “I told (Anna) about it, and she wanted to do it,” she said. “She loves to draw, and I think she was motivated by the chance to tour the sheriff’s office.”

Since the summer’s art competition was such a success, Stribrny has announced that the sheriff’s office will hold a spring art competition with the theme “My Favorite Things in Chester County!” Students may use pencil, ink,

markers, colored pencils or paint to create their work.

The contest is open to students in kindergarten through grade 12. Once again, the prizes will include a tour of the sheriff’s office, a certificate from the sheriff and a photo with the sheriff. The winning artwork will be displayed in the lobby of the Chester County Sheriff’s Office in West Chester.

If you have it in your heart to foster, it is great for any animal who gets to be in a foster home over a shelter,” Inman said, adding that fostering is also a way to determine if the family is ready for a pet. “If you think you might want an animal - a cat or dog - fostering is way to learn if you are really up for the responsibility.”

Inman and her two children, Garrett and Josie, are currently fostering Tiny, an 11-year-old cat that was brought to the ARL when her owner was no longer able to care for her. “She

is considered a senior cat, but I think cats, especially indoor cats, can live 18 to 20 years,” Inman noted. “A lot of people want kittens, so it is hard for older cats to get adopted.”

She said that Tiny would make an ideal pet because she is good with kids and other cats. “Everybody wants kittens because kittens are fun and adorable, but I found with this latest foster is that the senior cats are sometimes more enjoyable,” noted Inman, adding that the ARL provides a discount for those

who adopt senior pets. “They are fairly set in their ways. They know what they want.”

“Tiny loves love. She loves to be petted,” Inman added. “She would make a phenomenal companion cat. She is the most playful of all our cats, which is another surprise because I thought seniors cats didn’t play.”

In addition to Tiny, the family has two pet cats, Mack and Fiddler, a “foster fail.” “We got Mack from the Brandywine Valley SPCA. I thought he might need a friend,” Inman recalled. “I didn’t want to just get a cat and not know how they would get along, so I signed up to foster through the ARL.”

First, the family fostered three 3-month-old kittens. “Our job was to socialize them, meaning that they were very spicy kittens. They would not let people near them,” said Inman. “They wanted people to work with them closely to get them ready for adoption.”

“They stayed with us for about three months. Two of them got adopted at once, and we decided to keep the third - Fiddler,” she added.

Next, the family fostered four black kittens that were only a week old. “The next group of kittens we got were friendly. They were

part of a litter of seven,” Inman said. “It was so fun, but so much work. We had them for several months because they (weighed) a pound and we had to help them gain weight so they could be fixed. They flourished.”

She said it was hard for the family to give up the kittens because they became attached. “They started to recognize us as family, and it broke my heart,” she said. “My mother adopted one of the black kittens, and we get to see her. She doesn’t remember us, which made me feel better (about releasing them to their permanent homes).”

She said that fostering benefits not only adoptable animals, but the foster family as well. “Fostering is amazing because you get to really get a sense of the animal’s personality, and it’s fun to see all the different personalities,” Inman stated. “Here, they have love 24/7. I work from home, and I take ‘cat breaks’ to cuddle with them. They are also great emotional support.”

For more information about the foster program and to complete an application, visit www.berksarl .org/foster. Those interested in adopting Tiny may make an appointment to meet her by emailing adopt ion@berksarl.org.

it and started All 4 Paws,” she explained, noting that since its inception, All 4 Paws Rescue has saved more than 16,000 animals. “We have been busy.”

Since the program is foster-based, it is especially in need of people willing to give a temporary home to a cat or dog until a permanent home can be found. “We have a business office for adoption appointments and events, but all of our dogs are placed in foster homes. We do not have a kennel,” Geddes noted.

She said that while giving a pet to a permanent adopter can be difficult for a foster, it allows the rescue to continue its work. “I typically take in seniors and special needs dogs, and it’s really hard giving them up,” Geddes shared. “The only way we can save lives is for fosters to open their hearts and save another (animal). If we keep them all, we can’t afford to keep them coming in.”

Those who would like to adopt a pet are asked to compete an application and provide veterinary references and personal

references. “All of our adoptions take place at our office in Malvern. As long as the adopter is open to coming to our office, we have no (geographic) limit,” said Geddes. “We (even) adopted to many states away.”

To help find homes for adoptable dogs, the rescue holds meet-and-greet events at various locations. The next scheduled meet-and-greet event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 1, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Brandywine Ace Pet & Farm, 1150 Pocopson Road, West Chester. Another meet-and-greet event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 8, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Pickering Valley Feed & Farm Store, 305 Gordon Drive, Exton. Meet-and-greets provide an opportunity for people to meet adoptable pets. The events are also open to those who love dogs and want to pet them as well as to those who want to learn about fostering and volunteering opportunities.

“We tend to have (meetand-greet events) every weekend because we don’t have a facility people

can visit,” said Geddes. “Whatever foster families are available will bring that dog to the event to meet people. We reach out to approved adopters as well as try to attract new people. People can also learn about what we do.”

Among the pets currently available for adoption are Josey, a 12-year-old pug and beagle mix who was surrendered to All 4 Paws by a breeding kennel; Archie, an 11-month-old male retriever hound mix; and Andy, a 6-year-old male domestic shorthair cat. Andy’s adoption fee has been fully sponsored.

All pets available for adoption by All 4 Paws Rescue are microchipped, spayed or neutered and up to date on vaccinations and preventatives.

For more information and to complete an adoption or foster application, visit www.all4paws rescue.com. More information about the meetand-greet events is available at www.facebook .com/all4pawsrescue . Those with questions may email info@all 4pawsrescue.com.
