Winter is sweeter with Girl Scout Cookies

For those who crave Girl Scout Cookies, the wait is over. Cookie sales began on Jan. 24 and will run through mid-March.

Locally, people can find Girl Scouts selling cookies on weekends at area businesses. Booth locations include Lowe’s, 340 Crossings Blvd., Elverson; Walmart, 100 Crossings Blvd., Elverson; AJ’s Family Pizzeria, 204 Crossings Blvd., Elverson; Boyer’s Food Market, 200 W. First

St., Birdsboro; and Italian Delite, 113 E. Main St., Birdsboro.

Alexis Price and Oakley Bamford, members of Junior Troop 1465, which meets at Robeson Elementary Center and at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Birdsboro, were busy on a recent Sunday at the cookie booth located inside Lowe’s Home Improvement in the Morgantown Crossings shopping center, along with their “cookie moms,” Katie Price and Macall Bamford, respectively. The booth was open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with Scouts from different troops

working in two-hour shifts.

Katie noted that this is the last year that Scouts will sell Toast-Yay! cookies. The cookies, which were introduced in 2021, are shaped like French toast and dipped in icing and bear the Girl Scout trefoil symbol.

Other cookie varieties include Adventurefuls, which are brownielike cookies with a caramelflavored cream; Trefoils, which are shortbread cookies; Lemonades, which are shortbread cookies with a lemon-flavored icing; and Caramel deLites, which are

TVHS Mini-THON Club to offer Babysitting Night

Building on the success of their Christmas program, members of the Twin Valley High School (TVHS) Mini-THON Club will hold a Valentine’s Day Babysitting Night on Friday, Feb. 14, from 5 to 8 p.m. in the TVHS cafeteria.

Parents will be able to have a night out while their children

take part in games and crafts, watch a movie and enjoy snacks and beverages. A pizza dinner will also be provided.

Ashley Siv, who is the club overall and was selected for the 2024-25 Mini-THON Ambassadors program, said that the attendees enjoyed the previous Babysitting Night held on Dec. 13, 2024. “Our last Babysitting Night

Foodraisers to feature homemade favorites

Volunteers with the Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (HCVHA) will once again present their monthly “foodraisers” for 2025 at Historic Joanna Furnace.

The first event will be a Valentine’s lasagna dinner on Thursday, Feb. 13. For the takeout meal, there will be a choice of homemade meat lasagna, cheese lasagna or gluten-free meat lasagna. The dinner will include a pan of lasagna and salad, as well as bread for the

non-gluten-free dinners. All the dinners will be sold cold with heating instructions included.

Lasagna dinners will include a homemade chocolate dessert.

“We will have chocolate-covered pretzels,” said Mark Zerr, HCVHA executive director. “We will also be selling fresh, homemade chocolate-covered strawberries on the day of pickup.” Strawberries will also be available on first-come, first-saved basis.

“At each of our foodraisers, we will always have extra food items for sale,” Zerr noted. “The

It’s your move: Village Library offers Chess Club

“Not everyone can play soccer, football, (do) karate or play basketball, but everyone can do this,” said Joe Cress, who leads the Chess Club at the Village Library of Morgantown.

The Chess Club began at the library in the fall of 2024, and after a hiatus, it returned on Jan. 18. It will be held every Saturday at 10:30 a.m. through March.

learn what the pieces do, but there is a lot of theory behind the moves and different strategies you can use,” he replied. “It’s a lot about recognizing patterns in the board and knowing what to do.”

HBCA admits students of any race, color, national, and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs and activities generally made available to students. HBCA does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national, and ethnic origin in the administration of its educational policies, admission policies, scholarship and sponsorship programs, and athletic or other school administered programs.

Joe, who learned the game as a youngster, has been playing for at least 50 years. He recommends that Chess Club participants be at least age 10. “People can come and learn how to play chess; we are willing to teach them,” he stated. Those who already play the game are also invited to attend.

Joe was accompanied to the most recent Chess Club by his nephew, AJ Cress, 14, who started playing at age 12. When asked if it is hard to learn to play chess, AJ responded, “It’s hard to master how to move. You can

CREEKSIDE FOODS

“It takes time to learn how to move the pieces,” Joe added. “(The hard part is learning) how to put everything together and move the pieces and accomplish you goal, which is to checkmate the other player.”

“You learn by playing, playing, playing and practice, practice, practice,” Joe added.

While both play chess online, Joe and AJ said they prefer playing with an opponent face to face. “I prefer the real chess,” said AJ.

“I don’t concentrate as much playing (online),” Joe said, noting that he has played for chess clubs and played against professionals as well as at an international chess tournament.

“You don’t know who you (are playing). When you see the person, you want to win.”

The Chess Club has the use of six magnetic chess boards that were donated to library. “They are topnotch chess boards,” Joe said.

“They have wooden pieces and are magnetic on the bottom, so they don’t fall over as easily,” AJ added.

Joe encourages parents to bring their children to the library to learn to play. “It’s really a good game for young people to start playing,” he stated. “You are not on the computer, not playing games on the phone and it definitely helps your mind.”

He recalled establishing a Chess Club at a school for resource students. “We taught them how to play chess, and the teachers actually thanked me and said it made them better students,” Joe noted.

Joe hopes to grow the

club at the library because he enjoys teaching as well as playing those who already know the game. “We want to promote chess, and, down the road, we hope to have a chess marathon,” he shared.

The Village Library is located at 207 N. Walnut St., Morgantown. For

more information about the club, contact library director Carol Donahue at 610-286-1022 or smo library@gmail.com. More information about library activities is available at www.facebook.com/ VillageLibraryofMorgan town and www.village library.org.

crispy cookies coated with caramel and coconut and drizzled with chocolate stripes. Peanut butter varieties are Peanut Butter Patties dipped in chocolate and the Peanut Butter Sandwich, which is an oatmeal cookie with a peanut butter filling.

“Thin Mints and Peanut Butter Patties are the biggest sellers,” noted Oakley.

Those who visit the local booths also have an opportunity to donate cookies to Hometown Heroes, a program adopted in 2019 by the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania (GSEP). “We disburse cookies to different food pantries,” Katie noted. Past recipients have included Helping Harvest and Hope Rescue Mission.

make change,” Macall added. “They also learn how to run a business because they are selling a product.”

The Scouts are also able to keep a portion of the money for troop activities. “We are saving it up for a fun trip,” said Alexis, noting that one of the troop’s options will be visiting a water park.

In addition to troop activities, the Scouts take part in community service projects. “We are going to the Animal Rescue League in February, and they will be making toys for the animals,” said Katie, noting that the troop members also volunteered at the Hay Creek Festival and the Apple Festival at Historic Joanna Furnace.

The goal of the cookie sales, according to GSEP, is to teach Girl Scouts five essential skills - goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics. “They learn manners, salesmanship, people skills and customer service,” said Katie.

“They learn how to (handle) money and

was so much fun for the kids; they didn’t want to leave,” said Ashley. “We provided them with dinner, several games and a Christmas craft and ended the night with a movie. We plan to do the same at our Babysitting Night on Valentine’s Day.”

She said the program is geared toward elementary-school-age children, but children of all ages are welcome. Supervision is provided by club members and Lance Chappelle, club adviser.

The goal of the MiniTHON Club is to raise funds for Four Diamonds, a nonprofit organization with a mission to conquer childhood cancer. A fee will be charged for the Babysitting Night, which will be donated to the charity.

Parents interested in having their children attend the program are asked to register in advance by completing the Google form that can be found at www.facebook.com/twin .valley.313.

The Mini-THON Club holds many fundraisers throughout the year, including a Breakfast with Santa, a craft fair and car washes. The main fundraiser of the student-run

club is its Mini-THON. The dance marathon is modeled after the Penn State THON, which raises money for families with children being treated for cancer at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital. This school year’s event is set for Friday, April 25, from 5 to 11 p.m. This will be TVHS’ 10th year participating in the event. TVHS is located at 4897 N. Twin Valley Road, Elverson. On Babysitting Night, parents are asked to drop off their children by the school’s front entrance near the flag pole between 5 and 5:30 p.m. and then pick up their children at 8 p.m. For more information about the club and its activities, visit the previously mentioned Facebook page. Those with questions may email Chappelle at LChap pelle@tvsd.org or Ashley at 25asiv@tvsd.info.

New military license plates available

A new selection of military-themed license plates is available. Recently passed legislation allows the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) to offer Pennsylvanians six new license plates honoring military veterans.

Three of the new plates recognize service members who received medals or honors for individual achievements or deployments. These plates are the standard license plate colors of white, blue, and gold and bear a graphic of the medal awarded. For a fee, the plates are available for use on passenger cars or trucks with a registered gross weight of not more than 14,000 pounds.

These plates include the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal Registration Plate. Applicants must submit a completed MV-150, Application for U.S. Military Service Registration Plate, and a legible photocopy of their Form DD-214, Separation Papers or Discharge Papers, indicating they were awarded the Global

Tri-County Library also does a small book sale.”

Takeout lasagna meals must be ordered in advance at www.haycreek.org. The order deadline is Monday, Feb. 10. Takeout dinners can be picked up between noon and 5 p.m. on Feb. 13.

The HCVHA will also hold a sale of homemade yeast-raised potato fastnachts on Tuesday, March 4. Fastnachts can be purchased by the half or full dozen and can be eaten fresh or can be frozen to eat at a later time.

Fastnachts must be ordered in advance at the aforementioned website. The order deadline is Tuesday, Feb. 25. Orders can be picked up on March 4 between noon and 5 p.m.

“We are doing potato fastnachts, which is a Pennsylvania Dutch German tradition. We use potatoes because it has a nicer flavor,” explained Zerr.

Unlike doughnuts, fastnachts do not have holes in most cases. “We cut them in squares,” Zerr explained, noting that volunteers will make 300 dozen fastnachts.

“We get here early (on March 4) - around 5 a.m. - and everything is laid out. Every batch is pre-measured, so when we show up, the volunteers take the ingredients

Plates

and mix them. The dough is raised, then we cut the fastnachts. Then they are raised again and fried. That’s why we don’t have pickup until 12 noon - so we can get the whole process done.”

Additional foodraisers will be an Irish shepherd’s pie dinner on Tuesday, March 18, and a potpie and chili sale on Thursday, March 27. Details about ordering will be available on the website by Thursday, Feb. 13.

Historic Joanna Furnace, 1250 Furnace Road, Geigertown, is located just off Route 10, 3 miles north of Morgantown.

Proceeds from fundraisers and events benefit the HCVHA, a nonprofit organization that owns, maintains and preserves

Historic Joanna Furnace, a charcoal iron furnace that was in operation from 1791 to 1898, as well as the Tri-County Heritage Library, which HCVHA acquired in 2021. Zerr pointed out that those who come to the foodraisers are informed of donations that are needed by the nonprofit organization. For example, scarecrow-making items are needed for the Hay Creek Festival. “It’s the time of year when we start

collecting long-sleeved, button-down shirts and jeans and fabric remnants for our scarecrow building,” he noted. “We also take flea market items that people may want to donate, which we use during our Apple Festival flea market in October.”

The Tri-County Heritage Library, 4979 Twin Valley Road, Elverson, is also seeking donations. “For our library, we are looking to collect local genealogies. We are also collecting local artifacts or memorabilia from families for preservation and to display in the library. We want items that have local history to them,” Zerr noted. “We are also looking for community cookbooks such as those from local churches. Before all these cookbooks get thrown away, we would be interested in having them donated to our library.”

Donations for the library can be dropped off during the foodraisers or during the library’s hours of operation on Tuesdays from noon to 5 p.m.

Those with questions about the foodraisers, donating items or upcoming HCVHA activities may email info@haycreek.org or call 610-286-0388.
