GSV Announces Expanded Birdhouse Auction For 2021 BY ANN MEAD ASH

Holding an auction in a retirement community is no easy feat under COVID-19 restrictions, but rather than being limited by the situation, Garden Spot Village (GSV) chose to safely expand the annual Birdhouse Auction that supports the community’s benevolent fund through the sale of one-of-a-kind items handcrafted by GSV residents.

This year, the auction will be structured using two separate platforms - the traditional indoor silent auction and an online auction. According to Allison Cuthie, associate director of development with GSV, about 50 items will be offered on each platform. The silent auction will be held in the Village Square Indoor Park, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. The indoor auction opened Jan. 29, and it will end See Birdhouse Auction pg 5

DAR Honors Essay Contest Winners During Virtual Ceremony BY FRANCINE FULTON

lthough the ceremony was held virtually via Zoom, the awards presentation for the American History Essay Contest presented annually by the Chester County Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR)

“Imagine you are living in Boston and, after witnessing the events of March 5, describe your family’s discussion about the Boston Massacre and what role it played in organizing the colonists against the British king and Parliament.” featured all the customary activities. The event included meeting the winning students, the recognition of parents and teachers and the awarding of honorary citations from state representatives, followed by the reading of the essays. “The customary presentation and recognition are certainly not the same. But so, so much is positive,” stated Elberta Clinton, essay contest chair. “It’s so rewarding to be made

originality, spelling, grammar, punctuation and neatness. Also, the essay had to be the student’s own work. This year’s judges were DAR members Irene Moyer and Launa Sprouls. The non-DAR judge was Keith Burkert, a graduate of Rutgers University with a degree in history. Chloe wrote from the point of view of a girl whose brother described the massacre as “the most horrible thing he had every watched.” She also said the event was a way “to rally the 13 colonies to fight for their freedom.” Lauren wrote about a girl named Elizabeth who lost her best friend, Christopher, during the massacre, writing that March 5 was “a terrifying day.” In her essay, Claire wrote from the vantage point of a young girl living at the time, stating, “Girls are not to talk about war or anything masculine.” Julianna set the stage of a family supper where family members discussed the sentiment at the time - “No taxation without representation.” State Sens. Carolyn Comitta and John Kean were on hand for the ceremony via Zoom as well. They read the citation that each student was presented at her school by her sponsoring teacher. For their achievements, each of the winners received a certificate, a medal and a monetary gift.

Garden Spot Village wood shop member Jim Rittenhouse (left) and associate director of development Allison Cuthie display items that will be sold in the upcoming annual Birdhouse Auction.

“This is the time (people) really need support; there is a lot of anxiety,” said Donna Kueny, program director for Compeer Chester County, a nonprofit organization that pairs people living with mental health conditions with volunteer friends from the community. “There has never been a more appropriate time for staying in touch with people, letting them know someone cares about them and providing hope.”

These are amazing, talented students.” Essay contest winners include Chloe Colson, a fifth-grader at Mary C. Howse Elementary School, West Chester, and Lauren Ranieri, a sixthgrader at St. Agnes Catholic School, West Chester. Claire Bushnell, the seventh-grader winner, and Juliana Kirby, the eighth-grade winner, are both students at Peirce Middle School, West Chester. Clinton introduced the students, as well as their family members, teachers and school administrators who were in attendance via Zoom. She also read a biographical piece about each student. Clinton explained the premise of the essay contest: “March 5, 2020, marked the 250th anniversary of the Boston Massacre, considered to be a pivotal event that paved the way to the American Revolution. Imagine you are living in Boston and, after witnessing the events of March 5, describe your family’s discussion about the Boston Massacre and what role it played in organizing the colonists against the British king and Parliament.” Judging was based on historical accuracy, adherence to the topic, organization of material, interest,

With the pandemic curtailing indoor activities, local clubs, including the Elverson Walking Club (EWC) and the Berks Community Strollers, are offering alternative recreational activities by scheduling outings in February and March. All walks are free and open to the community. Clyde Godschall, EWC founder and hike leader, announced that hikes will return with a walk along the Horseshoe Trail on Sunday, Feb. 21. “We will slowly begin to restart our hiking schedule on Sundays,” he reported in the EWC newsletter. “The hike (on Feb. 21) will take us to a recent relocation of the Horseshoe Trail where it leaves French Creek State Park and crosses Geigertown Road. (It) circles around the gun club and enters the Hay Creek Reservoir and its trails.” Participants will meet at 1 p.m. at the large parking area on Geiger-

As part of the program, Compeer volunteers are paired with individuals of the same gender and geographical area who share common interests. Prior to the pandemic, the pairs shared activities such as attending a sporting event or a movie. Currently, most clients and their volunteer friends continue to keep in touch through phone calls, email and texting. “We have not been able to do Zoom only because most of our folks don’t have computers at home,” Kueny noted. Some pairs, however, have been meeting in person at restaurants or for shopping with masks and social distancing in place. Kueny noted that one client and his Compeer friend meet outdoors at local parks to hike. “Everyone is still in contact. Some people are actually out doing things, and others are more comfortable talking on the phone or through text,” Kueny said. “We send out CDC guidelines all the time. We suggested they not do a lot of socialization over the holidays. We thought it would be best (for them) to say in touch virtually.” Compeer is in need of volunteers, who must take part in a phone interview, complete an application and have appropriate clearances. “Once they are cleared, we set up a date for training. Another date is set to go over some matches,” Kueny explained. “We are doing training over the phone and sending materials to the volunteers. That is all done virtually now.” Those who are waiting for a match are assigned a “Compeer caller” who calls them once a week to keep in touch. “We did not have a lot of volunteers for the first six months of the pandemic,” Kueny added. “It has

just started picking up. We have some young female (volunteers) who just graduated from college who want to give back.” Individuals in the program have been diagnosed with conditions such as depression, social anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder, and they are referred to the program by a mental health professional. “The people we accept into the program are working in conjunction with their therapist or case manager,” noted Kueny. “They have been stable in the community for a while, and they have the support of the entire team throughout the whole process.” Compeer Chester County is a program of Mental Health Partnerships (MHP). It is funded by the Chester County Department of Mental Health/Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities (MH/IDD) and private donations. To learn more about Compeer Chester County, including volunteer opportunities, readers may contact Kueny at 610-436-4445 or dkueny@mhphope.org. Seniors Celebrate Rubber Ducky Day

To celebrate Rubber Ducky Day on Jan. 13, the Heritage of Green Hills, a healthy life plan community in Shillington, held races, rides and a water volleyball game on two huge inflatable ducks in its heated pool. In addition, dozens of traditionally sized rubber duckies were hidden throughout the community’s public spaces for residents to find. Over the holidays, the residents relocated “Elf on the Shelf” style items often in clever ways, and the small rubber ducks were expected to make similar migrations over the weeks following Rubber Ducky Day.

Birdhouse Auction from pg 1 inality. Birdhouses will range from traditional log cabins to those made of unusual materials, such as wine corks, along with those that are designed to be functional for certain types of birds. One creation resembles a miniature guitar, and another displays the round shape of a castle turret. Many are painted in bright colors, and some are covered in decoupage. Bird-themed items include decorative shutters, quilted items adorned with bright red cardinals, and a cork purse and matching wallet in earth tones with a splash of rust. “I have a beautiful wooden tray with a chickadee hand painted by Barb Baxter,” said Cuthie. In the more than a dozen years it has been held, the effort has raised more than $40,000 to benefit the benevolent fund, which supports GSV residents who have exhausted their financial resources. Cuthie noted that high bidders in the silent auction will be notified by phone. Online high bidders will be notified electronically. “We are offering shipping or pickup of items,” she noted.
