Hopewell Quilters offer Sewing Circle
BY FRANCINE FULTON
As part of their ongoing effort to promote needle arts, members of the Hopewell Quilters, a group of volunteers who demonstrate quilting at Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site in Elverson, have partnered with the Exeter Community Library to hold a Sewing Circle. The gathering is held at the library on the second Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to noon.
Each session includes a demonstration on a specific topic, followed by a time during which attendees can work on
their own sewing projects. Participants also have an opportunity to practice the art of quilting.
The first Sewing Circle session was held in January, and the topic was fleece blankets presented by Becky Hughes of the Hopewell Quilters. Hughes’ mother, Beth Shugar, presented February’s topic, which was embroidery and cross-stitch. The topic for the next scheduled meeting on March 8 will be quilting.
The partnership came about after the Hughes and the Hopewell Quilters presented two programs at the library, “The History of Quilting” and “How to Quilt a Potholder.”
“Becky had done a couple of independent programs with the library,” explained Shugar. “Then, we talked to them about needing a place to do a Sewing Circle, and we worked it out. Becky usually does a 15-minute presentation on the topic, and then we all have independent projects to work on - sewing, crocheting, knitting, cross-stitch and quilting.”
For the February program, Shugar talked about the history of embroidery, which traces back thousands of years. “The French word for embroidery is ‘broderie,’ which means ‘to embellish,’” she noted. “In the 18th century, it became part of a young’s woman’s

Wyebrook Baptist Church welcomes new pastor
BY FRANCINE FULTON
After attending Wyebrook Baptist Church in Elverson for four years, where he also taught Sunday school and led the Awana teen group, Kenneth Miller was recently named the church’s new pastor.
The church held a retirement service and luncheon for outgoing pastor J. Perry Stewart on Dec. 15, 2024, and Miller’s first service as the new pastor was held on Jan. 5.

Miller graduated in 2022 from Cairn University in Langhorne, where he majored in computer science and minored in Bible. “I wanted to get a job in the computer science field. I was thinking about money and success,” said
Miller. “There was a church plant we were attending in Philadelphia, and there was a revival service. I felt the Lord convicting me that I wasn’t serving Him; I was serving myself. Right then, I decided I needed to focus on ministry.”
Miller and his wife, Karmen, wanted to find a local Baptist church to attend that could help

Honey Brook library to reopen for March programming
BY FRANCINE FULTON
After being closed since December for a major renovation project, the Honey Brook Community Library will reopen for its March programming, including story times, book clubs and craft and sewing activities. March will also mark the beginning of the library’s new opening hours, which will change from 11 to 10 a.m.
Library director Jennifer Spade has remained working at the library in a makeshift office during the construction. While the library was closed to in-person visits, curbside pickup was offered on select days and hours, subject to the construction schedule.
“We closed the first week of December, but throughout this time, holds (reserved books) were still coming in and my staff has

Meet the Mayor: Esther Prosser
BY FRANCINE FULTON
If you want to know anything about what is going on in the borough of Elverson, just ask Mayor Esther Prosser, who was elected to a four-year term in 2021. Prosser, a graduate of Twin Valley High School, has a true affinity for her hometown, which has the nickname, “The Greatest Square Mile.”
Prosser, who also sells real estate in the area, recently shared information about what her jobs entail with the Community Courier.
Community Courier:
What are some of your job duties as mayor?
Prosser: A mayor’s primary responsibility is to keep residents safe. I have resurrected the Elverson Neighborhood Watch Block Captain program and, with all eyes everywhere, we have successfully helped create a safe town. Both (the real estate and mayoral) jobs include connecting with Elverson

residents, and that’s funeverything Elverson!
Community Courier:
What would people be surprised to learn about your job in real estate?
Prosser: I think many feel it’s easy. What could be so hard as putting up a sign, getting pictures taken and showing a home? There are many details and complications that require experience, patience and trust in a God who runs everything so both buyers and sellers come to the settlement table feeling well-served. And what better town to live in than Elverson? People move here and love it. That is satisfying.
Community Courier: What are your favorite parts of both jobs?

Prosser: In real estate, meeting with people and helping them by providing information, answering their questions and working for them. In short, serving people. This is also true for my job as mayor. Connecting with those who live here and doing what I can, so they come to love this town as I do, is a lot of fun.
Community Courier: What do you do in your spare time?
Prosser: I am an active person and love the outdoors. We began an Elverson pickleball group and play weekly. I love to run, so you will see me running the Elverson paths and sidewalks. Tennis is a passion, so when my out-of-town sister is visiting, we will hit the courts. I am an Elverson Fitness Club member and try to make it to weight and cardio classes there. I have recently begun hiking and am enjoying the trails at the

done a good job of making calls (to patrons) letting them know (their materials were available) and doing a curbside (service),” Spade noted.
Workers are currently installing flooring in the old parts of the library. “They are almost done,” said Spade, noting that a ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at the library in April. “They are putting in the floor, and our shelving has to be put back up.”
Among the programs set to begin in March is Story Time with Miss Jennifer to be held on Wednesdays and Thursdays, March 12 to May 15, at 10:30 a.m. Attendees will enjoy stories, songs and crafts. Story time is best suited for preschoolers ages 2 to 5, but youngsters of all ages are welcome.
Raise A Reader story time will be offered on Fridays, March 14 to April 4, at 10:15 a.m. The program is for children up to age 36 months. Featured will be rhymes, fingerplays, music and stories. The program is limited to 10 children plus their caregivers.
Call 610-273-3303 or email jspade@ccls.org to register for the story time programs.
Chatty Crafters will meet on Thursdays starting on March 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. Participants can bring their own projects to work on, including knitting, crocheting, needlepoint and crafts. For more information, call the library or email fbaylis@ ccls.org.
Sewing with Ms. Nancy will be offered on Fridays
beginning on March 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. Ms. Nancy will help participants with basic sewing skills, or they may choose a pattern or project from the library’s many sewing books. The library currently has five sewing machines available to use, or attendees may bring their own. To register or for more information, call the library or email nconner@ccls.org.
The Longwood Gardens Community Read Book Chat will take place on Tuesday, March 25, at 2 p.m. The topic will be “Paradise Under Glass” by Ruth Kassinger. To register, call the library or email fbaylis@ccls.org.
The Mystery Book Club will meet at 1 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of each month starting on March 25. A reading list is avail -

able at the library.
A representative from Sen. Katie Muth’s office will be at the Honey Brook Community Library for local residents who have questions or concerns from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on the fourth Friday of the month starting on March 28.
The programs and book clubs will be offered in the library’s new community programming room. “Everything that is not children’s related will be in the community room. That space was built for our programs,” Spade noted. “The children’s room is a little cozier and has carpeting. Plus, it’s easier for parents to check out books because they are already in that room.”
The Honey Brook Community Library is located at
687 Compass Road, Honey Brook. The new hours of operation are on Mondays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Tuesdays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Fridays and
Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information and a complete schedule of activities, visit www .honeybrooklibrary.org or search for “Honey Brook Community Library” on Facebook.

Museum to celebrate 60th anniversary
The Boyertown Museum of Historic Vehicles is celebrating 60 years of preserving Pennsylvania’s transportation heritage. The museum plans to commemorate this anniversary throughout 2025 with special events and programming.
The Boyertown Museum of Historic Vehicles was founded by Paul and Erminie Hafer and opened on Dec. 11, 1965. Paul, at the time president of the Boyertown Auto Body Works, and Erminie had a passion for the craftsmanship and ingenuity demonstrated in the vehicles built in south-

eastern Pennsylvania. They amassed a collection of locally built road vehicles, covering every type from bicycles to wagons, from cars to motorcycles.
The Hafers especially took pride in the vehicles built right in Boyertown. In 1872, the Jeremiah Sweinhart Carriage Factory opened on South Walnut Street to manufacture sleighs, carriages, and wagons. Although the company name changed several times, horse-drawn vehicles continued to be built on-site until 1926, when the company changed owners and became the Boyertown Auto Body Works, with a new product line of custom commercial truck bodies. Even before then, the carriage factory introduced its own truck bodies in 1914.
The Boyertown Auto Body Works carried on the tradition of Pennsylvania-German craftsmanship with its trucks, retaining many of the carriage factory workers through to transition to truck production. The Body Works operated until 1990 and throughout its history built a wide range of truck bodies, from military vehicles to delivery trucks to campers.
The building that once housed the Body Works, and the original Jeremiah Sweinhart Carriage Factory, are part of the museum campus today and serve as the main galleries. The original museum was located in a former factory building of the Body Works and was located at 28 Warwick St., Boyertown. In 2000, the museum moved to its current location at 85 S. Walnut St. The museum continuously adds to its collection of Pennsylvania-built vehicles and features, with many exhibits involving loans from other institutions or individuals.
The museum has several events planned in honor of its 60th anniversary. Events will celebrate the museum’s and the carriage factory and Boyertown Auto Body Works’ contributions to Boyertown’s history of manufacturing. An exhibit beginning in April will feature the museum’s Duryea automobiles,

Last June, I cycled the Erie Canal Trail in New York with four others. It was hot and exhausting but fun! My greatest passion is living for the God who made me. I am a member of the Brick Lane Community Church in Elverson and love worshipping, praying with and connecting with others there.
Community Courier: What do you love about Elverson, and what makes it a great place to live?
Prosser: Elverson is a safe, quiet and friendly small town. Neighbors know each other and many strive to live “loving your neighbor as yourself.” This is what makes Elverson the greatest square mile.

him with his faith goals.
“We looked at a whole bunch of churches in the area,” said Miller. “I was looking for a church home and looking to serve in ministry. We visited quite a few. It was a three-monthlong process visiting different churches and deciding where we should go.”
After choosing Wyebrook Baptist Church, Miller asked Stewart for guidance. “I told the previous senior pastor I felt the calling to ministry, and he took it upon himself to disciple me for a couple of years,” Miller noted.
Stewart recommended that Miller lead Awana and Sunday school, which he enjoyed because he already has experience in teaching.
“My dad is a pastor, and he has been pastoring for 52 years now,” said Miller. “I did grow up in a teaching field with helping him and ministering with him.”
Eventually, Stewart told Miller of his plans to retire and recommended that Miller fill the vacancy. Miller and his wife were then interviewed by church leaders.
“First, we came before the board - the leaders of the church - and they vetted us. They asked us a bunch of questions about doctrine, the Bible and what we believe,” Miller recalled. Then, the board recommended me
to the congregation as a candidate for pastor.” Miller preached the Sunday service for four weeks last August, followed by a congregational vote.
Sunday services at Wyebrook Baptist Church are traditional and include both hymns and praise songs.
Miller describes his preaching style as very traditional.
“I go chapter by chapter from the Bible. We will read a chapter and break it down, which is the expositional style,” he explained.
Future plans for the church include offering more community-based programs.
“My main goal this year is to do community outreach events, like a back-to-school event for kids. We are also looking to expand our youth (program),” said Miller.
“When the hurricane went through North Carolina, we had someone come in with a trailer, and people from the church and the community loaded up the trailer with supplies. We want to help out with causes (like that).”
He also encourages those looking for a new church or those who have not attended church for some time to visit Wyebrook Baptist Church to experience its traditional style of worship.
“We want to invite more people in,” Miller stated. “I’m not looking to add my own

flair. I am looking to take biblical truths straight out of Scripture and apply it to us. One thing I try to do and one of my strengths is taking Scripture that was written to a culture and people that lived thousands of years ago, but we can still apply it ourselves today and to our lives.”
Miller recently moved into the church parsonage with Karmen and their daughters, Eden, 3, and Isla, 1. “(The congregation members) have been wonderful,” Miller noted. “When we moved into the parsonage, they were welcoming us and giving us gifts and asking us if we needed help moving,”
Miller added that he looks forward to leading the church into the future.
“It’s both exciting and a little scary,” he shared. “I want to make sure I am doing His will and not my own. It’s so easy when you get a blank slate to get yourself involved in it - what you want to do - (rather than) letting the Lord lead instead.”
Wyebrook Baptist
Church, which has been serving community members from the Elverson, Honey Brook, Glenmoore and Morgantown areas since 1968, is located at 62 New Road, Elverson. Sunday school for people of all ages is offered at 10 a.m., followed by the Sunday morning worship hour at 11 a.m. Coffee and fellowship takes place prior to Sunday school. Awana, which features a game time and Bible study lesson for youths, is held at 7 p.m. on Wednesdays.

education to do needlework. There were schools that taught the different types of embroidery. It wasn’t until the mid-1800s that the first embroidery was done with a machine in France.”
Shugar explained that cross-stitch is a specific type of embroidery that uses only X-shaped stitches to create a design.
“Embroidery has different stitches - edge stitch, outline stick and lazy daisy,” she explained. “Then (there are) cross-stitches, which are (in the shape of) an ‘X.’”
Shugar displayed various samples of cross-stitch and embroidery, including stitches done on gingham fabric, towels, miniature Christmas trees and a crazy quilt.
“During the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, crazy quilts were popular,” she said, noting that crazy quilts were made by stitching together different fabrics in a variety of shapes. “(With crazy quilts) you
could display your stitching of the patches, and you could show your embroidery (skills).”
She said that many find completing embroidery projects relaxing. “There has been some studies that show the repetition of the stitches is very good for the brain and the body. (It makes) people happy,” said Shugar.
In addition to the Sewing Circle at the library, members of the Hopewell Quilters demonstrate the art of quilting during special events at Hopewell Furnace and at Daniel Boone Homestead, Birdsboro. To learn more about the group, search for “Hopewell Quilters” on Facebook.
