Program highlights black history and the Underground Railroad BY FRANCINE FULTON
It may seem that the topics of iron furnaces, charcoal production and the Underground Railroad are unrelated, but they are connected, according to Ben Carter, associate professor of anthropology at Muhlenberg College. As he explained

f all goes as planned, an empty field at Livingood Park will be transformed into the Elverson Skatepark, which will be open to people on skateboards, scooters, bikes and inline skates. Funds to build the skatepark are being raised by Action-Impact of Elverson, a nonprofit Christian youth organization that was founded by the late Ron Pershall, and is currently being operated by his son, Dave Pershall. ActionImpact volunteers Justin and Jansen Horrocks, who are Ron’s grandsons and Dave’s nephews, are spearheading the project.

He expressed that he was interested in (building) a skatepark because people in the community seem to have an interest in that,” said Justin, noting that Jansen has previously worked with skate ministries in the West Chester area. “Once we had approval
Along with Sunday services, most churches offer activities like Bible studies, youth groups and Sunday school. Fly fishing from pg 1 about trying to find a way to get Jamie involved in something at the church. They came up with the idea of fly tie sessions,” Stone said, noting that people can attend one or as many programs as they choose because a different fly is highlighted each week. Stone explained that fishermen use f lies as a way to attract fish and get them to bite the hook. Fly tying involves using a variety of materials, such as feathers, fur and colored beads, to create what looks like an insect or another aquatic creature, like a shrimp or crayfish, which is then attached to the hook. The process requires the use of hand tools and a “rig,” which is a vice that holds the fly in place while tying it. “We have a lot of people close by that really love (fly fishing). If they have a fly tying rig, they can bring it, but they are not expected to. We have materials and the rigs,” noted Stone.

about that. We will use the Bible to encourage others,” noted Stone. Stone emphasized that the main focus of the classes is to learn a skill. “(Attendees) are there for the session. They are not there to (attend) a church service,” he commented. “They can learn a Bible doctrine to uplift them in their spiritual work and their daily work as a person. After 10 minutes, it is all fly tying after that. It lasts about an hour to an hour and a half depending on the fly or if we do two flies. We have snacks and take breaks.” This is the third session of fly tying classes that has been offered at the church. Both parishioners and community members attend. “Most people that come are guests to our church. We have a lot of people that go to our church who are there to help and help teach,” Stone added. “We try to encourage people whether they are Christian or not or whether they are in church or not. “Jamie’s lessons are good. Not only is he teaching what you are doing with the fly and how to make it, he explains why it was made this way and what your fly is used for. By the end, (attendees) have at least one fly to take home.” The program also includes a lesson from the Bible that is related to the fly. “At 7 p.m., myself, the pastor or another preacher in our church will open up by welcoming everybody. We do a 10-minute devotion or Bible study,” said Stone. “We take the fly we are about to tie and try to relate it to a biblical story or biblical aspect and tie them together.” During the opening night, Shuler read a passage from Matthew 4:19 in which Jesus says, in part, “Follow Me and I will make you fishers of men.” Another example might be a Bible lesson about d e c e p t i o n . “ T h e f l y ’s e nt i re ( p u r p o s e ) i s to deceive a fish. For those struggling with the death of a loved one, GriefShare can help. Gr iefShare is a free, in-person support group program for anyone who is grieving the loss of a spouse, parent, child of any age, friend, sibling, co-worker or relative. Locally, the program is offered on Thursdays at 1 p.m. on the campus of the Tel Hai Retirement Community in Honey Brook. Led by members of the pastoral care team, including Tel Hai chaplain David Hicks, meetings will run through April 18. People can attend GriefShare at any time because each meeting is self-contained. The meetings are open to people in the community as well as Tel Hel residents. Following an introduction, each meeting features a 30-minute video on a grief-related topic that includes real-life stories of people who have experienced loss, as well as advice
from experts in the field. “We sit around a table and give people an opportunity to introduce themselves and tell a little bit of their story,” Hicks explained. “Then, there is a 30-minute video that features others who have lost (a loved one) as well as experts in grief counseling and psychology and pastors who specialize in grief. We talk about the video and the lesson and give people an opportunity to share and ask questions and give responses and discuss where they are in their grief journey.” Participants are asked to purchase a workbook, which corresponds to the video. “There is workbook that comes along with it that people can take with them and work on during the week,” Hicks noted. “It’s to keep you focused and engaged and thinking about what you have been learning.” The workbook includes an outline where people can write notes about the videos. Since GriefShare is
a Christian-based program, Bible verses and devotionals are also included. “Each week, there is a series of questions that are asked that people can reflect on or think about, and they can write their responses (in the workbook),” Hicks said. “We don’t require it, but we encourage them to do that. Those that do it find it really helps them.” He said the questions ask people to think about the emotions that they are experiencing. “The questions are self-reflective,” Hicks stated. “It’s more about looking at your own life situation, like’How are you handling anger?’” Hicks said that some people are reluctant to attend GriefShare, and it may be especially difficult the first time. “We encourage people that if you want to come and sit (and listen), you are welcome to do that. We don’t force anyone to enter into the discussion, but they are invited to,” he pointed out. “We encourage See GriefShare pg 4

Plans underway for Birdsboro Farmers Market Even though it is wintertime, plans are already underway for the Birdsb oro Far mers Marke t , which will be open for its fourth season beginning on Saturday, May 18, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This year, the outdoor market, which is presented by the Birdsboro Parks and Recreation Department, will be held on the third Saturday of the month from May through October at Main Bird Park, located at 226 N. They must produce what they sell.” She added that home-based business vendors are not permitted. Six Penny Creek: Charcoal, Iron and The Underground Railroad,” was presented by the Friends of Hopewell Furnace on Feb. 11. In addition to explaining about the work of the colliers, Carter also discussed black settlement at Six Penny Creek located near Hopewell Furnace. He reported that at its peak, between 1860 and 1870, approximately 40 to 50 people lived in the community, which consisted of nine houses on 40 acres of land. Members of the Cole family, whose descendants lived in that village, were on hand for the presentation. “There is a connection between charcoal lands, small black communities and the Underground Railroad,” Carter stated. “The Underground Railroad was an intricate network of people and families working together to move people who had b e en ensl ave d in the South to the North. Many abolitionists, called agents on the Underground Railroad, are white and Quakers but small rural black communities were also intensely involved in this.” Carter, an archaeologist, has been teaching at Muhlenberg for the last 15 years. “In order to teach student archaeology, you have do it, so I developed several projects, and one of those projects was charcoal production, which is what led me here,” he explained, noting that his class visited Hopewell for the first time in the fall of 2020 during the pandemic. During this visit, the students learned about the operation of Hopewell Furnace. Students from his class returned in the summer of 2023 to do excavation work in the Six Penny Creek community. “ We worked to reveal one of (the home’s) foundations,”

Future topics will include “Grief and Your Household” on Feb. 29 and “Grief and Your Friendships” on March 7. Carter noted. “It’s a small house. It is roughly 11 feet by 8 feet. At one point in time, we know there were five or six people that lived in that house. Think about how big your bathroom or kitchen is at home. It gives you an idea of the struggle.” The Six Penny Creek community built a church, the Mount Frisby African Methodist Episcopal (AME) C hurch, which was reportedly a station on the Underground Railroad. Carter noted that the church and cemetery are currently located on private property. “The AME church has always been linked directly into the Underground Railroad, arguably one of the reasons the AME church was founded - to support freedom among the black population,” he stated. Further, Carter stated, colliers were also known to hide slaves. According to an article authored by Carter for the Pennsylvania Parks & Forests Foundation, to make charcoal, colliers would stack wood in domed piles, which were covered with leaves and soil before being ignited. Because it was encased, the wood did not burn but rather it was left to “cook” to remove the sap and moisture to extract the carbon. The charcoal was transported to local furnaces, where it was used as fuel. To tend to the various burning fires, the colliers lived in the forest for up to eight months in collier huts. “Black Pennsylvanians using collier huts for longer time periods than normal demonstrate the importance of these structures as places of refuge and hint at their importance in both hiding people and ensuring that, when necessary, people could move on and build a new hut relatively easily,” he stated.
