Village Library hosts patriotic presentation
BY FRANCINE FULTON
To commemorate the 250th anniversary of the formation of the Continental Army and to coincide with Presidents Day, the Village Library of Morgantown held a special event on Feb. 15 featuring several guest speakers, including state Rep. Mark Gillen, who spoke about the Berks County Military History Museum, and Twin Valley High School graduate John Trego, a member of First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry. Matthew Sims, author of “Why My Heart Is Purple,” attended the program via Zoom.
The Berks Military History Museum, located at 198 E. Wyomissing Ave., Mohnton, opened in August 2017 in a former wagon works building.
The museum’s motto is “Remembering Those Who Served.”

The museum, which features displays of uniforms, weapons, flags and military equipment, as well as dog tags and medals worn by local veterans, is open every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; other hours are available by appointment.
Items on display in the museum have been donated or are on loan. “I would rather (the item) be in your house. But if it will fall by the wayside and will get thrown out, then by all means bring it (to the museum),” Gillen stated. “We don’t want your story to be forgotten. Why? Because it is America’s story. It’s not about
stuff; it’s about people and their experiences.”
For more information about the museum, visit https://berks military.weebly.com.
Next to speak was Trego, who presented a program about First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry, a volunteer cavalry unit in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard.
“We don’t want your story to be forgotten. Why? Because it is America’s story.”
The group was founded in 1774 by 28 men at Carpenters’ Hall in Philadelphia; original members were from a local fox hunting group.

“What made it unique as a cavalry unit was that you needed horses and men who could fight on horseback,” Trego said, noting that the troop fought not only during the Revolutionary War, but in subsequent conflicts. “We are believed to be the oldest continuously serving unit in the United States military. We started on Nov. 17, 1774. This past November we celebrated our 250th anniversary.”
The troop is a private military
unit, where members are elected. They also donate their pay back to the troop and aim to keep alive the skills of a cavalry unit on horseback by riding in military ceremonies. “We still maintain the cavalry traditions to this day. We ride (wearing) regimental uniforms, which are based on the original uniforms they would have worn, including bearskin hats,” Trego explained. “It is not a costume. It is a dress uniform.”
Currently, the troop has 67 active members, and it has its own armory building in Philadelphia’s Rittenhouse Square neighborhood. It also maintains a military museum. “When I

Exhibits highlight local educational history
BY FRANCINE FULTON
A display designed to celebrate the history of schools located in Caernarvon Township is currently being featured at the Caernarvon Historical Society building. The display features memorabilia from the former Caernarvon Academy, paintings of local schools created by artist Jere Brady of Morgantown, photos of former students and a list of names of teachers who taught at the various schools. Open houses will be held at the facility on Sundays, March 9 and 23 and April 6 and 27, from noon to 4 p.m. Society members, including president Yvonne Styer, will be on hand to provide guided tours.
“All the schools are featuredthe old and the new,” said Styer. “We need to get people to see what we have here. I was so excited when we started putting everything out. The more (memorabilia) we put out, the more we found we had. When people come in, they will really be surprised.”
One of the exhibits features Brady’s paintings and a miniature model of the Caernarvon Academy, formerly located next to the historical society building, which was originally built as a Presbyterian church in 1843. Before the academy was torn down, the building was part of the Caernarvon Elementary School property.
“The Jenkins family created it for a private school, and for several years, it was,” said Styer,

Wyebrook Baptist Church welcomes new pastor
BY FRANCINE FULTON
After attending Wyebrook Baptist Church in Elverson for four years, where he also taught Sunday school and led the Awana teen group, Kenneth Miller was recently named the church’s new pastor.
The church held a retirement service and luncheon for outgoing pastor J. Perry Stewart on Dec. 15, 2024, and Miller’s first service as the new pastor was held on Jan. 5.
Miller graduated in 2022 from Cairn University in Langhorne, where he majored in computer science and minored in Bible. “I wanted to get a job in the computer science field. I was thinking about money and success,” said Miller. “There was a church plant we were attending in Philadelphia, and there was a revival service. I felt the Lord convicting me that I wasn’t serving Him; I was serving myself. Right then, I decided I needed to focus on ministry.”

Miller and his wife, Karmen, wanted to find a local Baptist church to attend that could help him with his faith goals. “We looked at a whole bunch of churches in the area,” said Miller. “I was looking for a church home and looking to serve in ministry. We visited quite a few. It was a three-month-long process visiting different churches and deciding where we should go.”
After choosing Wyebrook Baptist Church, Miller asked Stewart for guidance. “I told the previous senior pastor I felt the calling to ministry, and he took it upon himself to disciple me for a couple of years,” Miller noted.
Stewart recommended that Miller lead Awana and Sunday school, which he enjoyed because he already has experience in teaching. “My dad is a pastor, and he has been pastoring for 52 years now,” said Miller. “I did grow up in a teaching field with helping him and ministering with him.”
Eventually, Stewart told Miller of his plans to retire and recommended that Miller fill the vacancy. Miller and his wife were then interviewed by church leaders.

gram),” said Miller. “When the hurricane went through North Carolina, we had someone come in with a trailer, and people from the church and the community loaded up the trailer with supplies. We want to help out with causes (like that).”
He also encourages those looking for a new church or those who have not attended church for some
time to visit Wyebrook Baptist Church to experience its traditional style of worship.
“We want to invite more people in,” Miller stated. “I’m not looking to add my own flair. I am looking to take biblical truths straight out of Scripture and apply it to us. One thing I try to do and one of my strengths is

“First, we came before the board - the leaders of the church - and they vetted us. They asked us a bunch of questions about doctrine, the Bible and what we believe,” Miller recalled. Then, the board recommended me to the congregation as a candidate for pastor.” Miller preached the Sunday service for four weeks last August, followed by a congregational vote.
Sunday services at Wyebrook Baptist Church are traditional and include both hymns and praise songs. Miller describes his preaching style as very traditional. “I go chapter by chapter from the Bible. We will read a chapter and break it down, which is the expositional style,” he explained.

Future plans for the church include offering more community-based programs. “My main goal this year is to do community outreach events, like a back-to-school event for kids. We are also looking to expand our youth (pro-

taking Scripture that was written to a culture and people that lived thousands of years ago, but we can still apply it ourselves today and to our lives.”
Miller recently moved into the church parsonage with Karmen and their daughters, Eden, 3, and Isla, 1. “(The congregation members) have been wonderful,” Miller noted.
“When we moved into the parsonage, they were welcoming us and giving us gifts and asking us if we needed help moving,”
Miller added that he looks forward to leading the church into the future. “It’s both exciting and a little scary,” he shared. “I want to make sure I am doing His will and not my own. It’s so easy when you get a blank slate to get yourself involved in it - what you want to do
- (rather than) letting the Lord lead instead.”
Wyebrook Baptist Church, which has been serving community members from the Elverson, Honey Brook, Glenmoore and Morgantown areas since 1968, is located at 62 New Road, Elverson. Sunday school for people of all ages is offered at 10 a.m., followed by the Sunday morning worship hour at 11 a.m. Coffee and fellowship takes place prior to Sunday school. Awana, which features a game time and Bible study lesson for youths, is held at 7 p.m. on Wednesdays. For more information about the church, visit www.wyebrook.org.

Volunteering can be good for your health
Volunteering has a positive influence on communities and people in need, but it can also be beneficial for the volunteers themselves. Volunteering may lead to better physical and mental health, among other benefits.
According to an article published by the American Heart Association (AHA) and Jeffrey Burr, a professor of gerontology at the University of Massachusetts Boston, volunteering can help to combat depression and anxiety and increase self-esteem, happiness, and a sense of meaning in life. Burr and the AHA note that the health benefits of volunteering occur among people of all ages, and a deep look at how volunteer efforts are good for personal health shows just
how profound giving back can be.
The Mayo Clinic reports that volunteering reduces stress and increases positive, relaxed feelings by releasing dopamine. When volunteers spend time in service to others, they report feeling a sense of meaning and appreciation, both of which can have stress-reducing effects. AmeriCorps reports that volunteering can provide a sense of purpose in older adults, which can help replace feelings of inadequacy due to loss of major role identities, such as wage earner or parent. This sense of purpose can improve life satisfaction and happiness.

pointing out that the academy building resembled a church. “Katherine Jenkins had it built. She was a very religious woman. Her husband was Robert Jenkins, who ran Windsor Forge, who built our building and then the school.”
Katherine lost her mother and later her father, who was the first minister of the Forks of the Brandywine Presbyterian Church. “He died when she was 11 years old, and she was handed over to all different Presbyterian minsters’ families,” said Styer, noting that Katherine attended a private school at Pequea Presbyterian Church. “Maybe that’s why the design (of the academy) is like this.”
She noted that eventu -
ally the ELANCO School District acquired the property, using the academy building as its high school. It later constructed the Caernarvon Elementary School. Both the academy and the school were torn down.
A framed graduation certificate from the high school, dated 1909, is housed in the museum. “It is the only diploma we have. The family gave it to us,” Styer said, noting that there are also photographs of students and actual items removed from the elementary school before it was torn down. “We have so much stuff from the school, like the bell and the datestone that was given to us and a plaque that hung at the school.

We also have a what I call ‘the naughty bench’ that sat outside the principal’s office. Students come in here and say they remember the bench.”
painted by Brady, as well as a series of notebooks that contain the names of teachers who taught at township schools.

Visitors to the museum will notice three quilts that were handmade by students at Caernarvon Elementary School. “Every year, the fifth-grade teacher had students make quilts of different designs. They raised money that way. They had an auction, and people would buy them,” Styer explained. “We have pictures of kids that helped make the quilts.”
The newest photos on display at the museum are Amish and Mennonite schools in the township, including the Little Red School House. “I have pictures (of the buildings) but no pictures of the children,” Styer noted. “All of these are still (in use) right now. I went around recently and took these pictures.”
There are also several images of schools that no longer operate as educational facilities that were
In addition to the school-related displays, the society has archives of information about local churches and properties, including Historic Poole Forge. The museum also has a collection of yearbooks from Garden Spot High School, photos of township veterans and a few of their uniforms.

ARL renews contracts, pilots new agreements
The Animal Rescue League of Berks County (ARL) announced the renewal of its animal control service contracts with Bern Township, the City of Reading, Jefferson Township, New Morgan Borough, Upper Bern Township and Wyomissing Borough.
Through these contracts, the ARL will continue to provide animal control services with the aims of enhancing public safety and ensuring humane treatment of animals in these communities.
As part of the contract, the ARL offers various services to residents and law enforcement.
Animal-holding for stray pets is available. Residents may bring stray domestic animals displaying signs of ownership, regardless of behavior or medical condition. Residents will not be charged an intake fee, regardless of the care the animal requires. The ARL reserves the right to
pause intake of non-emergent cases for emergencies which include capacity crisis and natural disaster.
In addition, residents may call the ARL during business hours with humane law, animal control and non-cruelty concerns. The ARL unburdens local police departments and municipal township answering services from these calls and offers residents access to a representative during business hours, seven days a week. The ARL receives more than 90,000 phone calls each year, so when call volume is high, residents are asked to leave a message to ensure faster service. The ARL’s business hours are on Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Animal control enforcement, dispatch and police assistance are provided. The ARL offers stray animal pickup services
Volunteering
older adults who volunteered for at least 200 hours annually decreased their risk of high blood pressure by 40%. Lowering blood pressure may also lower the risk of heart disease and stroke.
Volunteers working together link people to others and their communities. This connection can help people overcome feelings of isolation, which may come from being new to a community or being a senior and having a smaller social circle.
Those who volunteer regularly may be happier and more empathetic toward others. Volunteering also instills a sense
of pride that can make people happier.
Individuals who volunteer can improve their cognitive health as well. That is because volunteering engages people in new skills, requires them to solve problems, and keeps them mentally stimulated through various activities.
Some volunteer activities will involve physical tasks that can contribute to improved physical health because they constitute moderate exercise.
Volunteering offers a number of benefits that can improve both physical and mental health for those donating their time to help others.

for contained domestic animals when no other transportation is available. This service also includes the pickup of rabid, injured, diseased or dangerous domestic stray animals. All animals suspected of rabies are quarantined or tested following Pennsylvania state law. Animal control officers enforce Pennsylvania’s dog law, including dogs at large, dog bites, dog licenses and vaccinations. Dangerous dog investigations and enforcement are not included, as that section of the law is only enforceable by the county dog warden and the police. Owner surrenders are accepted. Priority access is given to owners within animal control service areas who wish to surrender their
pets as space allows. Additionally, in 2025, the ARL piloted a new feefor-service animal control option to small municipalities that need assistance with fewer than 15 dogs per year. Select municipalities were considered, resulting in the following municipalities entering into agreements for this new service: Union Township, Bechtelsville Borough, Colebrookedale Township, and Boyertown Borough.
These agreements allow law enforcement and authorized township personnel to bring a limited number of stray dogs to the shelter, further extending the ARL’s reach in serving the community; cats are not included. For

additional information regarding these agreements, residents may contact their local municipal office. Direct services for residents are not included in the agreement. For cats, any interested municipality can enter into a voucher program for trap-neuter-vaccinate-return (TNVR) services separate from an animal control contract for community cats.
Separate from animal control contracts, the ARL provides humane law enforcement to all of Berks County. Humane Society police officers enforce Pennsylvania’s Animal Cruelty Statute, 18 Pa. C.S., and are not restricted to contracted municipalities. Services
include unlawful tethering of a canine, investigation of cruelty and neglect complaints and abandonment. No entity contracts for these services, nor funds the cost to offer this service. In addition to Humane Society police officers sworn in within Berks County, local and state police also have the power to investigate cruelty and neglect.
The ARL of Berks County remains committed to the safety and well-being of both animals and residents through its continued partnerships with local municipalities. For more information about ARL’s animal control services, visit www .berksarl.org/animal-con trol-service-areas.
