Animal Rescue League unveils mobile adoption unit, clinic
BY FRANCINE FULTONThe Animal Rescue League (ARL) of Berks County held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on March 23 to launch its new mobile adoption and clinic unit.
The new vehicle, purchased in part by Petco Love Foundation, will allow the shelter to host adoption events and offer vaccine and microchip clinics throughout Berks County.
The mobile vehicle can house up to 18 kennels, which vary in size to accommodate different animals. The adoptable pets can be seen from the outside of the unit. The vehicle also has an exam table and a refrigerator to store
vaccines and other medications.
The ribbon cutting was held in the parking lot of the Reading Exeter Petco during a rainstorm,
“Not only will this van bring our services, but it will also give pets an opportunity to find new homes.”
but that did not deter the enthusiasm of those in attendance, who were huddled under tents. “The mobile adoption and clinic unit is one more piece of the Animal
Rescue League’s mission of promoting innovative programs to help animals throughout Berks County,” said Tom Hubric, ARL board president. “As board president and having being involved with this organization for over eight years, I am proud to see the ARL expanding in this way.”
“I always said that pet people are the best; now I know you are the heartiest,” added Staci Seltzer, general manager of the Reading Exeter Petco. “It’s appropriate that it is raining and miserable today because rescue does not take a break. They are there 24/7 and 365 days a year. We are very proud to be partnered with the ARL, which does such wonderful things.” She

Not only will this van bring our services, but it will also give pets an opportunity to find new homes.”
Following the ceremonial cutting of a red ribbon, the mobile unit remained open throughout the afternoon for cat adoptions.
Hubric’s company, Hubric Resources, sponsored all the cats’ adoption fees on March 23. “We brought 12 cats and eight got adopted directly from the vehicle that day,” reported José Joel Delgado-Rivera, the ARL’s chief communications officer.
He said that the ARL will soon
post a schedule for the mobile unit. “In April, we will have another cat adoption during our Kitten Shower event, but the date and location is still pending,” he stated. “In May, we will have the first clinic. It will be a microchip clinic during the First Friday event in Reading.”

group has created an exhibit for the show. Individual members also participate in the show’s design contests.
This year, the club entered the Open for Business design category, which asked participants to design a Philadelphia-themed store window display that included fresh-cut flowers, greenery and accessories.
The Elverson club’s design committee, chaired by Lisa Cherpanich and Mary Wickerham, created this year’s presentation, called “Upbeat,” which was meant to replicate a music store. The exhibition received a second-place ribbon along with a class commendation in the Open for Business design category.
“This is quite a feat for a small club like ours,” said Carol Simonetti, club
president. “We benefit from the skills and experience of our members, who lead the way.”
The “Upbeat” music store featured a selection of plants and flowers situated among musical instruments, including a violin and a saxophone. The display also featured an old phonograph with a record on the turntable. On the walls hung a painting of a trumpet player completed by club member Trudy Moore and two musical-themed photographs taken by Wendy Fox.
“All the decorative items were either owned by committee members or they found them,” explained club member Laura Alden. “We stage (the display) somewhere and then we (disassemble) it and put it back together at the show. They give us the physical space, but we do everything else.”
In addition to the committee, club members also help with the display by keeping it looking good throughout the eight-day show, which ran this year from March 2 to 10. “Various people from the club go at 6 in the morning and do maintenance every day of the show,” said Alden. “You want to make sure the plants are healthy and that it’s clean. There is also more than one judging, so you have to make it look as fresh as you can.”
“It’s very competitive,” Alden added. “You are talking about one or two points between the (winning)
entries. The Elverson club has always been in the running.”
Additionally, 18 of the Elverson club’s members participated in the 2024 show in various capacities and club member Robert Grenfell served as chair of competitive classes for the Philadelphia show.
Fox was awarded a blue ribbon in the Overall Platform Design class and an honorable mention in photography for her Still Life class submission. Simonetti received a third-place ribbon in photography and a class commendation in the Play class. Cherpanich placed third in the Miniature Design Class.
The Elverson Garden Club, which began in 1929, currently has approximately 50 active members. The club meets at 7 p.m. on the first Tuesday of the month March through December in Detterline Hall at Saint Peter United Church of Christ, 1920 Ridge Road (Route 23), Knauertown. Those interested in joining the club are invited to attend a meeting.
Members pay an annual fee to participate, which allows them to attend educational gardening workshops and club dinners.
Individuals may join the “Elverson Garden Club”Facebook group for more information about the club.
As part of the contest, students in grades nine through 12 are asked to submit an essay of 500 words or fewer, and students in grades six through eight may submit an essay of 300 words or fewer. This year’s topic is “What Does the Word Liberty Mean to You?”
According to Jeff Jones, site manager, the topic of the contest each year is based on the Declaration of
Independence. In 2022, the topic was “What Does the Declaration of Independence Mean to You?” Last year’s topic was “What Does the Phrase ‘Created Equal’ Mean to You?”
Essays will be reviewed by a panel of judges from the community. The top three students from each group will receive cash awards of $125 for first place, $100 for second place and $75 for third place, all of which are increased amounts from last year. The top three winners from each group will read their essays on July 4 during a ceremony set for 2 p.m. at the Ironmaster’s Mansion. Last year, winning students who could not be at the program had their essays read by representatives, who included the site’s park rangers.
The 2023 event also featured patriotic music and the recitation of the Declaration of Independence, which audience members volunteered to read line by line.
Essays may be submitted by mail to Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site, c/o Independence Day, 2 Mark Bird Lane, Elverson, PA 19520; emailed to HOFU_Superin tendent@nps.gov or hand-delivered to the park visitor center
on Wednesdays through Sundays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
In addition to the essay, each entry should include the student’s name, grade, name of the school or school district were the student lives or attends, a name of parent or guide and their email address and a telephone number.
