Robin Hood with a twist

“It’sfun and it’s funny,” said principle actor Derek Hedlund when describing “The Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood,” which will be presented by the Community Homeschool Players at Conestoga

Mennonite Church, 2779 Main St. (Route 23), Morgantown. Show dates and times are Friday, April 21, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, April 22, at 2 and 7 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door.

Directing this year’s play is 2020 Community Homeschool graduate

Seerena Petersen. Seerena was a cast member in the 2019 production of “Gladys in Wonderland,” and Seerena played the title role in the homeschoolers’ version of “Cinderella” in 2018.

“I was searching for a play that could handle a small cast and is a fun fairy tale,” said Seerena, when

describing how she chose the play as this year’s production. “It’s really geared toward kids, and it’s very comical. It interacts with the audience a lot and it’s funny. There are many jokes in there that will make the audience laugh and many silly actions by the cast.”

The

Table offers food and fellowship

“There are a lot of hands that put it together and a lot of love that goes into it,” said Richard Nolt, online pastor at Abundant Life Church in Birdsboro, when describing The Table, a free monthly community meal offered at the church. “It provides the community a place to come, relax, socialize and get to know each other.”

The Table, a ministry of the church, is offered at 6 p.m. on the third Tuesday of the month. The next meal will take place on April 18, when baked ziti will be served along with homemade desserts. Nolt, who leads the online ministry team as well as the church’s social media presence, also has a love of cooking, which he puts into use at The Table. “You can’t love to cook and not jump in to help,” he shared.

The community meal program began last September at the suggestion of pastor Devin Blankenbiller. A team was then formed to run the ministry. “We put a couple of signs in the neighborhood and communicated it to our church members to let them know what we were doing,” Nolt recalled.

“We had a little fun with it, so we had a chili cook-off. Sixteen of our members made their own chili, and it was a competition. We also had chili as a meal. We try to do each meal with a little fun and entertainment to connect with people.”

Robin Hood

The play, based on the book by Mary Lynn Dobson, is a comedic take on the classic tale of Robin Hood and his Merry Men in Sherwood Forest. They battle the evil Prince John and his henchman, the Sheriff of Nottingham, and meet Robin’s true love, Lady Marian.

Seerena noted that the play breaks “the fourth wall,” which is an imaginary barrier that separates the actors from the audience. “With acting you are in a box with three walls, and the fourth wall divides the audience with the cast,” she explained. “When you break the fourth wall, the audience is interacting with the cast.”

For example, she noted, cast members come into the

audience for several scenes and, at times, they talk directly to the audience.

The play is suitable for people of all ages and the community is welcome to attend.

“We want anybody who thinks they would enjoy it to come see it,” Seerena said.

“We want as many people as possible.”

In addition to Derek in the title role as Robin Hood, other cast members include Ethan Juhl as Friar Tuck, Jivien Horrocks as the ladyin-waiting, Veronique Riviello as the sheriff, Dylan Frolich as Prince John, Rachel Stewart as Will Scarlett, Meredith Stratton as Alan Adale, Maura Taylor as Lady Marian, Riley

Driscoll as Little John and Alyssa McCaffrey as Town’s Guy. The crew includes Eliot Hedlund, Becky Stauffer, John Dymond and Jane Weis. The assistant director is Carisa Petersen.

In addition to the show, attendees will have an opportunity to win gift baskets, including one provided by Twin Valley Coffee.

Established in 1995, the Community Homeschoolers Learning Group provides shared classes and activities for local homeschoolers from kindergarten to high school. For more information, email communityhomeschoolers @gmail.com or visit www .communityhomeschoolers.org.

Kinetic expands fiber broadband service area

Nearly 2,200 homes, businesses and schools in Berks, Chester and Lancaster counties are now eligible for fiber broadband, high-speed internet provided by Kinetic.

The service was announced during an event held at the Caernarvon Township Municipal Building in Morgantown, which also included a ceremonial ribbon-cutting for fiber broadband. Participants included Pennsylvania Telephone Association president Steven Samara; Lydia Messner, an aide for state Sen. Scott Margin; Kinetic state public affairs vice president Jeanne Shearer; Berks County

community and economic development director Pamela Shupp-Menet; Twin Valley School District superintendent Patrick Winters; Kinetic state operations president Susan Schraibman; and Caernarvon Township supervisor Paul Whiteman Sr. About 900 customers in Berks County, 750 in Chester County and 550 in Lancaster County are now eligible for fiber. That total of nearly 2,200 customers will likely increase to more than 3,100 by this time next year, Kinetic estimates. Kinetic’s fiber-optic broadband lets users upload and download at up to 1 gigabit per second, or

1,000 megabits a second, providing what is known as “nextgeneration access.”

The southeastern Pennsylvania fiber project is part of a $2 billion multiyear capital investment strategy to dramatically expand gigabit internet service across Kinetic’s 18-state footprint.

Customers may visit www.gokinetic.com to find out if they are eligible for a speed upgrade and how Kinetic can help meet their home or business needs. They may also visit the Kinetic Connection Center retail store at 130 E. Main St. in Ephrata or call the store at 717-738-7100.

The Table frompg 1

Since the church is housed in the former Birdsboro Elementary Center, the meals are prepared and served in what once was the school cafeteria. “We get to meet some of the people who worked at the old school in years past, and they tell us about the building, and there are some old teachers and maintenance workers that come in,” Nolt noted. “It’s a nice meal. Sometimes people hang out and socialize (after dinner).”

The ministry has grown since its formation, and now between 75 and 115 people attend The Table each month. “The other nice thing is we have 35 to 40 volunteers every single meal,” Nolt pointed out. “We

have a baking team that provides desserts. (Last month), 12 ladies in our church made 125 to 130 cupcakes.”

In addition to eating dinner, children are invited to take part in a craft activity. Past crafts have included making gingerbread houses, coloring and decorating cookies to eat. The activity for April will include planting a flower seed in a pot to take home.

Future plans call for a graduation party to be held for June’s meal. “Some people do not have the opportunity to have their own (parties),” Nolt said. “We have 15 or 20 seniors in our church alone. It will be a nice treat.”

Nolt added that Helping Harvest (formerly the

Greater Berks Food Bank) operates a food pantry at the same time as The Table in a separate room in the school building. Helping Harvest provides free food items for qualified residents.
