Action-Impact to host Easter activities

Easter egg hunts for people of all ages will be held at Action-Impact, a nonprofit Christian youth organization located at 80 Vickery Lane in Elverson. The events will also include the telling of the Easter story, which recounts Jesus’ death and resurrection.

Activities will begin with a flashlight Easter egg hunt on Friday, April 18, from 7 to 10 p.m. for students in middle school and high school. Attendees are asked to bring their own flashlights.

“Our staff and some parents hide the eggs in the late afternoon and early evening. We put a few dollars in some of them, and there are lots of candy and prizes,” said Action-Impact director Dave Pershall, noting that one of the hidden eggs will contain a $20 prize. “Everyone waits to see who (finds the grand prize).”

Students will also learn the Easter story through music and a short film. “Our worship team is made up of students and adults, and they will sing a couple of songs and the kids can join in if they would like to - obviously related to Jesus and the meaning of Easter,” Pershall explained. “We show a half hour of ‘The Jesus Film’ that goes through story of Jesus’ life from the book of Luke.”

On Saturday, April 19, beginning at 10 a.m., an egg hunt will be held for children up to fifth grade and their parents. Attendees should bring their own baskets or containers for the eggs.

“We put out over 5,000 eggs,” said Pershall, noting that the plastic eggs will be filled with candy. “There is candy and lots of tickets for prizes - big prizes and little trinkets.”

For the parents’ Easter egg hunt, select eggs will contain gift cards to a local restaurant. “We give two $25 gift cards for lunch and a $50 gift card for dinner,” Pershall noted.

Youths who are part of the organization help fill the eggs prior to the Saturday hunt. “We will get together on our big egg filling night,” Pershall noted. “We also do some youth group

games - to see what group of kids can fill 100 eggs the fastest.”

There will also be a time for attendees to learn about the true meaning of Easter through the use of Resurrection eggs. “There are 12 aspects of the story.

(Among them are) Jesus’ going into Jerusalem, the crucifixion and resurrection,” said Pershall.

“One of our staff will display items in the Resurrection eggs.”

Like golfers who win the Masters Tournament and the green jackets tailored for them, Good Samaritan Services (Good Sam) and Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) are ideally suited for one another. The two community-minded organizations are once again linking up for the 18th annual EPC Golf Outing benefiting Good Samaritan Services.

The charity event will be held Friday, June 6, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. There will be two sessions of golf. The first will tee off at 7:30 a.m., and the second will start at 1:30 p.m. A light breakfast and a chicken barbecue lunch will be served to the morning groups; the afternoon groups will receive a light café lunch and a chicken barbecue meal for dinner. The deadline to register is Friday, May 23. Go to https://epcgolf outing.com for more information and to register.

provide prizes can visit the aforementioned website or email EPC marketing and communications director Dan Silva at marketing @engleonline.com.

“We want to be involved with the communities we serve,” said Jocelyn Engle, who is EPC’s publisher. “We know that some people just need an extra boost in times of need, and this was a perfect fit for us.”

Rachel Shelley, the director of marketing for Good Samaritan Services, agrees. “We love our partnership with EPC,” said Shelley. “Obviously, the funding that comes from the golf outing is helpful in supporting our mission (and) funding the work that we do in the community. Also, EPC is obviously so well-connected, and this is a great awareness-building event for us, too.”

Good Sam has locations across Lancaster and Chester counties and every day serves about 300 people who are in crisis. “Our mission is to respond with compassion to individuals and families who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of homelessness,” Shelley said.

Anyone who needs assistance from Good Samaritan Services can go to https://goodsamservices.org. A Good Sam representative will conduct a screening via a phone call to determine if the organization can help. EPC is carrying on a family tradition started by company founder Alvin Engle, who was Jocelyn’s grandfather.

Alvin was involved with numerous philanthropic endeavors and set the tone for the company going forward, Jocelyn said.

Since its inception, the golf outing has generated nearly $300,000 for neighbors in need. “We want to make the experience memorable for golfers and also make sure community members are aware of what Good Sam does,” Jocelyn said. “We want to (send the message) that everyone is included. We want to make sure (the golf outing is) affordable for everybody to take part. … I think what’s so neat about our event is we’ve had so many returning sponsors and golfers because it is something people look forward to every year.”

Many of Good Sam’s 30 staff members will volunteer at the golf event. “Our staff loves coming to the golf outing,” Shelley said. “It’s such a cool day for our staff. A lot of them are working directly with the people we serve every day providing case management, and it’s a heavy job. It’s important, important work. It’s really important for our staff to come on the day of the golf outing and see the community support for the work that they’re doing.”

Good Samaritan Services executive director Nate Hoffer will attend the outing. “His true passion for what he and his team members do has been fun for us to watch as an organization, because we know everyone is being taken care of by Good Sam,” said Jocelyn.

Only 3% of Good Samaritan Services’ budget is funded by the government. “People have been generous and kind in supporting and believing

in the work we do,” said Shelley.

Good Sam will be expanding its impact with two homes in Phoenixville. It will be the first time Good Sam will offer housing for women in Phoenixville. The homes will continue to provide safe housing for women facing homelessness, with the added resources of Good Sam.

Shelley stated Good Sam takes an individualized approach to caring for clients. “Everyone in crisis has their own individual story,” she said. “They are on a unique path on how they are going to reach stability.”

Clients meet one-on-one with a resource coordinator, who provides case management with “bite-size goals” for them to work on, Shelley said. She added Good Sam team members “take this large problem of crisis and break it into sizable goals while walking alongside them in that journey and equipping them with tools.”

There are no quick fixes. The goal is to remove any barriers that might be in the way of clients achieving longterm housing stability.

Courtney and her 3-year-old daughter, Cherish, were the first family to move into Good Samaritan Services’ Lancaster city residence for women and children, which opened last year.

“Good Sam Services has gone out of their way to make sure I have everything I need and more,” Courtney said. “The opportunities I’ve received are truly a blessing. They helped keep me going when I could have quit, and I’m so grateful for their support. For the first time in a long time, I feel like I can breathe.”

Easter from pg 1

For example, one of the eggs will contain a coin, which symbolizes the 30 pieces of silver that Judas was given to betray Jesus. “The last egg is the most fun because it’s the empty egg. (It) symbolizes the empty tomb,” Pershall said. “A lot of the kids know (about the empty egg), and a lot of their families do something similar.”

Action-Impact offers weekly meetings for youths year-round. Meetings are held on Fridays from 7 to 10 p.m. during the school year and on Thursdays during the summer from 6 to 10 p.m.

The youths enjoy free time; games, including basketball or dodgeball; and singing, worshiping and Bible study. “We always have some food during the night. And there is some kind of activity,” Pershall pointed out. “Usually the kids in the beginning part will pick their own activity for the night.”

All activities are free, and the youth group is open to students from any area school district, including homeschoolers. “They often come not knowing each

other, and they become good friends,” Pershall said, adding, “Everything we do is free. Donations fund everything, whether it’s (from) alumni or businesspeople or parents.”

Action-Impact, which is situated on 17 acres, is marked by a stone entrance on Vickery Lane, just off Hopewell Road. The egg hunts will be held rain or shine. In the event of inclement weather, activities will be moved indoors.

For more information, visit www.action-impact.org or search for “Action-Impact, Inc. for Students” on Facebook. Those with questions may contact Pershall at dlpersh@action-impact.org.

Egg hunts promise Easter fun

Along with the religious celebration of Easter, the holiday also includes a fun tradition - Easter egg hunts, where children scurry to collect plastic eggs, many of them filled with candy or prizes. Several local organizations have planned Easter egg hunts that are open to the community.

The Caernarvon Township Parks and Recreation Committee

will hold an Easter egg hunt for people of all ages on Saturday, April 19, at 10 a.m. at Friendship Park, 3287 North St., Morgantown. Children will be divided into different age groups to hunt for eggs, followed by the second annual adult hunt.

“We will have over 4,000 eggs, and we do have prize eggs,” said Erin McMullen, a member of the parks and recreation committee.

“The Easter Bunny will also be

available for pictures.”

In the event of rain, the hunt will be held inside the township building, 3308 Main St., Morgantown. For more information, visit www.caernarvon.org or www .facebook.com/Caernarvon PandR.

Moving Communities to Christ (MCC) Church will hold an Easter egg hunt for children up to age 12 on April 19 from 2 to 4 p.m. at its Elverson campus, 4221 Main St.

“We will be filling around 30,000 eggs,” said Jen Waldron, MCC preschool ministry director, noting that the event will also include crafts, face painting and games. “Everything is offered free to our community.”

For more information or to register for the egg hunt, visit www.weareTHATchurch.org.

Friendship Fire Company No. 1, 3433 Hay Creek Road, Geigertown, will hold an Easter egg hunt on April 19 beginning at 1 p.m. The hunt will be divided into four age groups for children up to age 12. There will be special eggs with prizes. For more details, visit www.geigertownfireco.com.

Ryerss Farm for Aged Equines, 1710 Ridge Road (Route 23), Pottstown, will present a children’s Easter egg hunt on Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Some eggs will contain coupons for special prizes.

“We hide the eggs in the barn, so it’s rain or shine,” said Lynn Seeburger, a member of the Ryerss board of managers, adding that the Easter Bunny will also be on hand and available for photos. “The kids get so excited when they see the Easter Bunny.”

PLACE AN AD

The Ryerss gift shop will be open during the Easter egg hunt offering equine-related items; gift items; stuffed animals; and Ryerss apparel such as hats, T-shirts and hoodies. Attendees will also have an opportunity to visit the rescued and retired horses that reside at the farm. Preregistration is required for the egg hunt, and there will be a fee charged per child. Attendance is limited to 35 children per age group, and there will be no registration on the day of the event. While the hunt for children ages 2 and 3 is filled, there are still openings for children ages 4 through 9.

To register or for more information, visit www.ryerssfarm .org and select “Events.” Those with questions may call 610469-0533 or email info@ryerss farm.org.
