Walk for the Animals

Community members who love their pets and want to help animals in need are invited to take a short drive to Reading to participate in the 46th annual Walk for the Animals, presented by Humane Pennsylvania (Humane PA). The event will be held once again this year at Jim Dietrich Park, 4899 Stoudts Ferry Bridge Road, Reading, on Saturday, May 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

In addition to the fundraising walk, attendees will have an opportunity to take part in contests and enjoy food and beverages, shopping from local vendors and live entertainment.

People are invited to register to take part in the scenic walk along the Schuylkill River. “It’s about a mile-long walk along the trail. It is a leisurely walk-at-your-own-pace (event),” said Maggie McDevitt, Humane PA media specialist. “It is free and open to the public and family-friendly, but we encourage

Great Marsh Institute to host “Crafts for Critters”

Animal House Project, a nonprofit organization that serves pet owners in need, will present “Crafts for Critters” on Saturday, May 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Great Marsh Institute, a private estate located at 34 Moores Road, Elverson.

Crafters will be able to set up outdoors on the property, indoors

in the site’s Glasshouse and on the porch of the Glasshouse. Local nonprofit organizations that want to distribute information about their services are also welcome to participate.

“The Great Marsh Institute (is situated) on 600 acres overlooking the marsh,” said Amanda Cook of Elverson, the volunteer fundraising coordinator for Animal House Project.

people to register to walk because it’s a donation that goes directly to the care of the animals.” She noted that same-day registrations for the walk will also be accepted.

McDevitt noted that walkers are welcome to bring their dogs for the stroll along the river. “Some of the people with older dogs carry them in strollers,” she said, adding, “(The Walk for the Animals) is truly a way to get people together and to do something with their dogs while fundraising as well.”

Also featured during the day will be live music from Dibbs and the Detonators, a VIP beer and wine garden, food trucks, children’s activities and displays by crafters and vendors. There will also be representatives from nonprofit organizations on hand, including the Animal Rescue League of Berks County, Birdsboro. Nonprofits will be able to set up a table for free at the walk. Humane PA will offer information about adoptable pets.

McDevitt said that a crowd

favorite at the walk every year is the dog contests that pups and owners can participate in together. Dog contest categories will include Best-Dressed, Best Smile, Best Tailwagger, Best Trick and Best Pet/Owner Look-Alike. Preregistration for the dog contests is not required. Participants will be asked to meet at the entertainment stage around 12:30 p.m. Dog contest winners will receive a Humane PA swag bag filled with gifts for both humans and canines.

For more information or to register for the walk, visit www.humane pa.org and choose “Events” and then “Walk for the Animals.” There will be separate fees for adults and for youths age 17 and under. There is also an option to take part in a virtual walk and to register as a VIP Walker, which includes added benefits.

Questions about the walk can be directed to Nicole Koch, events and interim volunteer coordinator, at nkoch@humanepa.org or 610-750-6100, ext. 232.

Tri-County Heritage Library sets open house

The Tri-County Heritage Library (TCHL), 4979 Twin Valley Road, Elverson. will host its annual community open house on Friday, May 5, from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Visitors will be able to view the library’s newest acquisitions and key library collections. Admission is free, and light refreshments will be served.

On display at the library will be the one-of-a-kind Morgantown quilt that was created by volunteers from the former Morgantown-Caernarvon Historical Society, which later became the Tri-County Heritage

Society (TCHS). When TCHS disbanded, its collections were taken over by the Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (HCVHA). HCVHA also owns a special collection of items housed at the Caernarvon Township Building in Morgantown.

“We acquired the library in 2021,” said Mark Zerr, HCVHA executive director. “We have basically reorganized the library. We have been working on preserving and conserving the collection that we have. For instance, everything was in boxes and folders, and we are in the process of transferring everything over into archival safe containers.”

The Caernarvon Historical Society will offer a tour of churches in Caernarvon Township on Saturday, May 13, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. In addition to touring 12 local churches and learning about their history, attendees will be treated to a luncheon at 12:30 p.m. at one of the tours stops - Mount Culmen Evangelical Congregational Church, 1885 Turkey Hill Road, East Earl.

Among the churches that will be featured on the tour are Twin Valley Bible Chapel, Bridgeville Evangelical and Bangor Episcopal churches in Narvon; Conestoga Mennonite and California Bethany Evangelical Congregational churches in Morgantown; and Bethany Grace Fellowship in East Earl.

According to Yvonne Styer, historical society president and historian, this is the first time that the group has hosted a church tour. “We used to do house tours in Churchtown, and that would include three churches in Churchtown. Someone suggested (featuring) all of the churches in our township,” she said. “We went and asked them, and they all wanted to participate.”

At each site, unique features will be highlighted, and tour goers will learn a bit about the church. “There will be at least one person (on hand) giving a (brief) history of the church,” Styer said. “We think people will enjoy it.”

Styer explained the event is designed to highlight local history and church buildings and to make people aware of the Caernarvon Historical Society and its museum, located at 2148 Main St. (Route 23), Narvon. The

“The porch has been the popular place because it’s covered, and you don’t have to bring a tent. There are also plenty of outside tables available.”

Cook noted that craft vendors must sell homemade items. No home-based businesses will be permitted. Food trucks are also welcome. “(The food trucks) will be near the house in the secondary parking lot area,” she pointed out.

Cook, who is a crafter herself and makes homemade candles, approached the Great Marsh Institute

about hosting the first-time event.

“The Great Marsh Institute is our next-door neighbor, and they are also a nonprofit organization focused on researching the marsh area and following birds’ migration,” she said. “They allow a lot of schools to come in and study the ponds and the birds. They do events in and around the Glasshouse, so I asked them if we can do an event there.”

Cook noted that the event not only benefits the Animal House Project but also supports the participating

crafters and vendors, as well as the shoppers, who will have a variety of items to choose from. “Ideally, I would like to see at least 50 (vendors),” said Cook. “It is a good opportunity for them to get themselves out there, plus (shoppers) can support local people.”

This is Cook’s first time organizing a large fundraising event. She became a volunteer with Animal House Project just over a year ago. “I had dog beds and supplies to donate. When I was there, MaryBeth (Yannessa, board president) said that they also needed volunteers,” said Cook, explaining how the volunteer opportunity came about.

FThe “Crafts for Critters” event will take place rain or shine. More information and a link to register can be found at www.facebook.com/ AnimalHouseProject1 or by visiting www.animalhouseproject.org and choosing “Events.”

Animal House Project dba Chester County Pet Food Pantry helps people

feed and care for their companion pets in order to keep them out of shelters and rescues. In addition, the organization provides spaying, neutering and low-cost vaccination of pantry clients’ pets. The pantry’s spokespuppy is Yoshi, who will is scheduled to be on hand at the “Crafts for Critters” event.

The pantry is always in need of financial donations, pet food donations and volunteers willing to work at events and on distribution days. For more information, visit the previously mentioned Facebook page and website, call 484-949-8329 or email info@animalhouseproject.org.

The Morgantown quilt was completed in 1974 and features 32 embroidered patches depicting local historic buildings in Caernarvon Township, Berks County. To complement the quilt, there will be a display of artifacts and photographs of the many sites depicted on the homemade quilt. “The quilt has been in storage, and we wanted to show it off,” said Zerr. Also featured will be a vast collection from the estate of Florence “Flo” Williams of West Chester, who passed away in 2014. According to Zerr, Williams was an educator and Civil War re-enactor. She also accumulated more than 40 spinning wheels of various types during her life and demonstrated the early American craft of spinning and dyeing wool. Her demonstrations included donning period dress and teaching others about spinning and its role in Colonial America. At the library open house, visitors will see her “walking wheel” on display, period re-enacting garb and her personal artifacts.

Also on display will be items from the Grace Mines collection. The former Bethlehem Steel Grace Mine was

located along Route 10 outside of Morgantown. The mine produced iron ore from 1958 until it closed in 1977.

“In 2022, the library was able to secure additional photographs of the mines and the properties that it owned,” Zerr noted. “As a fundraiser the library will also have a special Grace Mines T-shirt for sale.”

The TCHL, which consists of records from Berks, Chester and Lancaster counties, is open on Tuesdays from noon to 5 p.m. Visitors may search through various history books, magazines, journals, maps and photographs of local historical interest. These records include church, cemetery and tax records and published genealogies.
