Youths invited to bike rodeo

“Mygoal is to have kids on bikes with smiles on their faces in a safe environment, introducing them to the fun sport of biking,” said John Spahr, one of coaches of the Twin Valley Mountain Biking Team (TVMBT), which will present the Twin Valley Bike Rodeo on Saturday, May 20. The event, which is open to youths ages 4 to 12, will take place from 10 a.m. to noon at Moving Communities to Christ (MCC) Church, 4221 Main St., Elverson.

The bike rodeo is free to attend; however, donations will be accepted to support the TVMBT. Participants are asked to bring their own bikes and helmets. The rain date for the bike rodeo is Sunday, May 21, from 2 to 4 p.m.

Featured during the bike rodeo will be bike skill stations, a bike and helmet safety check, free prize giveaways and an “All Things Bike” swap shop. Activities will take place in the church parking lot. “We will have more than 10 stations with different obstacles (for youths) to

Camp Adventure to offer summer fun

Games, arts and crafts, sports, hikes, trips to the playground and swimming are just some of the activities that students enjoy during Camp Adventure, offered each summer at the Birdsboro Community Memorial Center, 201 E. Main St., Birdsboro. This year, camps will run from Mondays through Fridays, June 12, through Aug. 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Camp will be closed on Monday and Tuesday, July 3 and July 4, for the Independence Day holiday.

themed weeks. Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary, as well as representatives from French Creek State Park, will be visiting this summer as part of our STEM programming.”

practice their on-the-bike skills,” Spahr explained.

Obstacles will include “The Lava Bridge,” “Circle of Doom,” “Mountain Top,” “Mine Field” and “Newspaper Toss.” “There is also a teeter totter station,” Spahr noted. “You have to ride up a teeter totter to the fulcrum and then come down. It’s about 14 inches off the ground.”

Bike and helmet safety checks will also be offered. Part of the bike wellness check will include the ABCs - air in the tires, brakes and the chain. Youths will also learn how to put on and properly wear their helmets.

Volunteers from the TVMBT will be on hand to help run the event and guide attendees along the obstacle course. “It is supported by the student-athletes on the mountain biking team, parents and coaches,” said Spahr.

The TVMBT is a nonprofit organization that formed in 2016. It is part of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Cycling League (PICL). During competitions, youths ride off-road and on local trails. “We

start practice in July, and the season goes until October,” Spahr said. “Sixth- through 12th-graders are welcome to join. We are expecting 50 riders this year and about 25 coaches. It’s a good-sized team.” While most team members own mountain bikes, the team has several bikes that students may borrow to see if they like the sport. Information about joining the TVMBT will be available during the bike rodeo. “It often attracts new members,” said Spahr. “Every year we get a handful of student athletes that wind up joining the team.”

Spahr noted that TVMBT provides an opportunity for youths to compete in a fun and exciting sport. The team’s goal is to promote a strong body, strong mind and strong character for student-athletes that encourages outdoor activities versus time spent on their devices. “It’s hard to be on the phone when you’re riding a bike,” Spahr said. For more information about the bike rodeo and the team, visit www.tvmtb.com or www.face book.com/twinvalleymtb.

“We are a nonprofit that partners with the United Way of Berks County to provide a lowcost summer day camp to (5-year-old) children who have completed kindergarten (up to age) 13,” explained Lisa Kraljevich, the center’s executive director. “We offer nine

Twin Valley to host alumni event

Teachers, staff members and graduates of the Twin Valley School District (TVSD) from 1956 through the present are invited to attend an All Twin Valley Alumni Event on Saturday, May 20, from 4 to 11 p.m. at the Reading Liederkranz, 143 Spook Lane, Reading. The family-friendly event, which will include live music, drawings, games and an opportunity to purchase dinner, is being presented by the Twin Valley Community Education Foundation (TVCEF) Alumni Committee.

“We look forward to seeing many Twin Valley alumni for this multigenerational event,” said Susan Sanger, a fourth-grade teacher at Twin Valley Elementary Center and member of the TVCEF Alumni Committee. “There will be food, music, drinks, yard games and plenty of time to catch up about our high school days.”

Doors will open at 4 p.m. for a two-hour social time. Attendees will also be able to purchase tickets to enter a drawing to win gift baskets as well as sports jerseys from Twin Valley’s history that have been donated by the athletic department.

The Natalie Jane Band, featuring Twin Valley alumna Natalie Dodd, will perform from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. At 8 p.m., the prize drawing winners will be announced. The Phoenix Sideshow band, which includes Twin Valley alumnus Joe Notario, will be featured from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Among the German food items that will be available for purchase are bratwurst sandwiches with sauerkraut, goulash over noodles, a pork schnitzel dinner and a Liederkranz burger with cheese. There is also a vegetarian option of butternut squash ravioli or penne pasta with vegetables. Appetizers will include Bavarian pretzels with or without bier cheese. Apple strudel, assorted cakes and ice cream will be available for dessert.

According to Sanger, the goal of the first-time event is not to replace individual class reunions. “While in school, we were friends with people

of all ages, and class reunions only allow you to see your fellow classmates,” she noted. “In having a multigenerational event, including teachers and staff from the past, it allows whole families to gather and to enjoy each other’s company. The Alumni Committee is new to the Twin Valley Community Education Foundation, so it is allowing us to build a database of alumni.”

For more information about the event and to register, visit https://twinvalleyalumni.org /twin-valley-alumni-reunion or www.facebook.com/TwinVally AlumniandCommunity. A fee will be charged for adults. Youths age 17 and under will be admitted for free. Those who purchase tickets using cash on the day of the event will receive a discount.

Senior Connections to meet

The Senior Connections group will meet at Conestoga Mennonite Church, 2779 Main St., Morgantown, on Thursday, May 11. Lunch will be served at noon, followed by the program.

Guest speaker will be Shirley Hershey Showalter, an awardwinning educator and author. Formerly professor of English and then president of Goshen College, Showalter has returned to Lancaster County where she she grew up as a 10th-generation descendent of Mennonite immigrants. She is the author of “Blush: A Mennonite Girl Meets the Glittering World” and co-author of “The Mindful Grandparent: The Art of Loving Our Children’s Children.” People age 55 and over are welcome to attend.

Campers will also take part in reading and educational programs, and they will visit the Franklin Institute and attend a Reading Fightin Phils baseball game. “Field trips are included in the camp prices so that all children may participate. (There are) no additional fees for parents

to worry about,” said Kraljevich.

The camp director is Marissa Raposelli, a teacher specializing in educational support. “Marissa has been employed by the center for five years and started out as a camper herself,” noted Kraljevich. “Assistant counselors are local high school and college students with an interest in education.”

Kraljevich noted that the camp is not limited to children who reside in Birdsboro. “Camp is open to anyone. We have children from multiple school districts - Daniel Boone, Exeter, Twin Valley, Oley, Boyertown and Pottsgrove,” she said, noting that the youths particularly enjoy their trips to the pool. “The kids get to enjoy making new friends and lasting memories.”

Children may attend as many camps as they choose throughout the summer. Extended care is also available for an additional fee.

Golf outing will benefit Good Samaritan Services

The 16th annual Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) Golf Outing will be held on Friday, June 9, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. Tee times will be at 7:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and members of the public may sign up to play in teams of up to four players. All proceeds will benefit Good Samaritan Services (GSS).

GSS is a nonprofit organization that seeks to assist those experiencing homelessness in Lancaster and Chester counties. First operating under the name Good Sam Shelter, GSS was created in 1999, and it has continued to grow in the years since. The organization currently has five locations, which are located in Lancaster city, Ephrata, Coatesville, Phoenixville and Kennett Square. “We’re really grateful to EPC for partnering with us for so long. It’s a fun way for people to get involved,” said Rachel Shelley, marketing and communications specialist for GSS. “Fundraisers like these make our growth possible and have allowed us to assist more people than ever before.” In the past year, GSS has served more than 600 people in the local area. For more information, visit www.goodsamservices.org.

A prize drawing will occur at the end of the golf outing on June 9, featuring items that have been donated

by local businesses. Prizes in the drawing will include items such as tickets to Longwood Gardens, an adventure package from Refreshing Mountain Retreat & Adventure Center, handmade wooden items, golf equipment and gift cards. The prize drawing will be open to players in the morning session and evening session; if a player’s name is drawn after he or she has left, the player will be contacted to receive the prize. This year, many local businesses have donated items for the prize drawing for the first time. “It’s really neat to have fresh people involved and helping the mission,” said Rachel Stebbins, EPC’s marketing

director. “People in Lancaster are very generous and are more than happy to support the cause.”

Food will be included in the cost of admission for the event. Peters’ BBQ will provide meals for lunch and dinner; breakfast from Joe on the Go Coffee Co. will be offered in the morning; and boxed lunches will be provided by Trio Bar and Grill. Drinks such as water and iced tea will be offered throughout the day from a beverage cart.

The funds raised from the EPC Golf Outing will support a variety of projects and initiatives that GSS has begun implementing this year. The Kennett Square facility was opened

Shoes & Boots For The Whole Family

Fin December 2022, and the organization plans to break ground for a new office building in Ephrata this summer. The addition of the Ephrata offices will allow caseworkers to give their clients more privacy while assisting them; previously, staff members needed to share offices due to space limitations. GSS has also started to offer free, in-house counseling services to its clients. By removing barriers such as cost and transportation, GSS hopes to give accessible support to clients who are experiencing trauma.

“There’s something about giving back that brings out the best in everyone. Everyone is excited to be there supporting GSS,” Stebbins said. “Whether you’re a regular golfer, a newbie, or somewhere in the middle, you’re going to have a great time.”
