Sunday School Class Enjoys Live Reptile Program By Francine Fulton
Youngsters in Sunday school at Grace and Truth Fellowship in Morgantown, along with their family members, were recently treated to a visit by Jesse Rothacker from Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary, who combined a live animal show with humor and lessons from the Bible. Rothacker brought many reptiles to the show, including snakes and turtles, and he often spoke with a live snake on his head or draped around his shoulders. His sense of humor was evident when he opened a box and said, “Well, there was supposed to be a snake in here,” encouraging the audience to look under their chairs for the escaped critter, who hadn’t really escaped at all. “There are four families of reptiles snakes, lizards, crocodilians and

Eighth-Graders Receive Awards For Work In American History By Francine Fulton
Jesse Rothacker displayed many varieties of snakes during a recent presentation to the Sunday school class at Grace and Truth Fellowship in Morgantown.
The Chester County Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) recently presented Outstanding Work in American History Awards to local eighth-graders. Unlike the DAR’s annual American History Essay Contest, which ask students to complete essays that are judged by DAR members, the Outstanding Work in American History Awards are given to students who are chosen by the staff members at local public and parochial schools. “We send an invitation to each middle school in Chester County to participate,” explained Kym Dyer, history award committee chair. “Each year, the school’s educators identify one student See Awards pg 9

Reading To A Dog from pg 1 owners, Laura Valadakis and her daughter, Jane, who are both certified handlers. Laura said the goal of the program is to provide youngsters an opportunity to read in a n o n threatening and safe atmosphere. “They feel as if there is no judgment,” she said. “If they stumble on a word or stutter, the dog doesn’t know the difference.” “It gives the kids a lot of confidence in reading out loud,” Jane added. Children who read to Moose will be given a bookmark with his photo after the session.

As part of the PAWS for Reading program, children of all ages are invited to read to a friendly dog at the Coatesville Public Library on the first and third Saturdays of the month beginning at 10:30 a.m. Moose, a golden retriever, will be at the library on July 21 and Aug. 18. Gillie, a Scottish terrier, will be on hand on Aug. 4. Those who take part in the reading program five times will receive a free T-shirt. Moose, who is 4 years old, is accompanied to the library by his
Coatesville Public Library director Penny Williams said that the because the therapy dogs are so friendly, children can feel comfortable reading to them. “I had some kids with brothers and sisters who are afraid of dogs. By watching other kids and their siblings read, they would slowly come pet the dog and eventually read to the dog,” she stated. “The dogs are sweet and gentle, and (the children) realize (the dogs are) not dangerous.” Laura explained that her family learned about the therapy dog program when Jane was a patient at A.I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Del.
“They had posters on the wall that talked about the pets that come to visit children,” she said. “That’s how we became acquainted with the organization.” Laura noted that Moose was certified by PAWS in February. In addition to reading with children, he visits with seniors who reside at the assisted living facility at the Friends Home in Kennett Square. “We bring him from room to room to meet the residents,” she said. “It’s great because they talk about the dogs that they had in the past. It brings them to a happy time when they had dogs. It’s a really positive experience.”
She said that Moose also attends local community events. Most recently, he was on hand at the Father’s Day FatherFest held at the American Helicopter Museum in West Chester. Laura pointed out that therapy dogs are being utilized in other situations as well. “Therapy dogs (are being used at) de-stress events (at schools). We did a de-stress event at Radnor High School,” she noted. “They also do events at colleges when students are stressing during finals. A lot of freshmen show up because they miss their dogs.” For more information or to schedule an appointment with
July 14, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The event will end with a bag-ofbooks sale on Sunday, July 15, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. “(On Sunday), we will sell you a grocery bag to fill with books. People can bring a handled bag to put the grocery bag in,” said Vicki Steinberg, book sale coordinator.
“We will sell you more than one bag (if needed).” During the bonanza, books will be divided into categories, such as children’s books, classics, teacher materials, reference items, history, science, nature, sports, hobbies, cookbooks, nonfiction, mysteries, romance, science fiction and more. The collectibles area will contain special books such as first editions, autographed copies, coffee table books, local interest titles and books by local authors. The Berks Book Bonanza, held for more than 30 years, was
located for the past six years on the third floor of the Red Building at the VF Outlet Center in Wyomissing. days compared to its previous four. Also due to space limitations, there will be no holding room. In addition, scanners, carts, strollers and rolling duffels will not be allowed on the sale floor. Steinberg said the changes to the 2018 sale will help offer the maximum number of items to shoppers in the space allowed. All materials that will be sold at the sale were donated by area residents. Steinberg said that thanks to the generosity of the community what normally took 12 months was condensed into three months. “We normally collect books for an entire year, but this year we started collecting on April 15,” she noted. “People tried to give us as much in three months as they would have in 12.” Volunteers are currently working at the mall location. “Volunteers are in the space sorting. If people walk by, they can definitely see the books,” Steinberg added. The Book Bonanza is an annual fundraiser co-sponsored by the Friends of Berks County Public Libraries and the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Reading Branch. The Friends group is a volunteer, nonprofit association that supports all of the 23 public libraries in Berks County, including the Boone Area Library in Birdsboro and the Village Library in Morgantown. All the proceeds go back to the libraries and to help support the AAUW Reading Branch, which gives money to girls for scholarships. Only cash and checks will be accepted at the sale. For more information about the Book Bonanza, readers may visit www.berksbookbonanza.org. Additionally, since the location will only be available this year, organizers are searching for a new location to host next year’s Berks Book Bonanza.
The Berks Book Bonanza will be held on July 13 through 15 at a new location - the Berkshire Mall. Books will be sorted into categories such as romance, fiction, science, nature, sports, cookbooks and more.

The Brandywine Base Ball Club (BBC) of West Chester will play a doubleheader on Saturday, July 14, beginning at 11 a.m. at East Goshen Park, 1661 Paoli Pike, West Chester, against the Diamond State Vintage BBC from Delaware. Games are free and open to the public. Spectators will be treated to the game of “base ball as it was played in 1864, which means players, called “ballists, will be dressed in historically similar attire and use period-appropriate equipment, including handmade wooden bats and hand-stitched balls. In addition, players in vintage base ball do not wear gloves and only one baseball is used during the entire game. The Brandywine BBC, which formed in 2013, competes with other vintage clubs in the Mid Atlantic Vintage Base Ball League. The team has grown in size and skill since its formation. “ We have received many compliments from our oppoSliced Canadian Bacon $

Canvas bags or sacks filled with rubber chips are used as bases. Following the doubleheader, the team will compete in the Gettysburg Vintage Base Ball Festival on Saturday and Sunday,

Pennsylvania Parks Honored In keeping with Pennsylvania’s long history of conservation, House Resolution 901 was recently adopted by the state House to recognize the 125th anniversary of the state park system, which is operated by the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR). The first State Forest Reserve was established with the purchase by the Commonwealth of 7,000 acres in Clinton County at the end of the 19th century. Today, 2.2 million acres of forestland, in 49 of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties, are sustainably managed by DCNR. The parks offer a variety of activities, including hiking, camping, fishing, hunting, boating, and picnicking. Also in 1893, the Commonwealth set aside the hallowed land of Valley Forge, the site of the third winter encampment of Gen. George Washington’s Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, thereby creating the first state park in Pennsylvania. The Commonwealth presented that park to the federal government as a gift for the nation’s

Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding recently joined dairy farmers and industry advocates to kick off “Choose PA Dairy: Goodness That Matters, a campaign to support Pennsylvania’s dairy industry by educating consumers on how to find and buy locally produced milk, as well as how it is said to benefit Pennsylvania’s economy and the health of residents. According to Redding, the dairy sector contributes $14.7 billion annually to Pennsylvania’s $135.7 billion agriculture
industry. He noted that the dairy industry supports 52,000 jobs in the state and is supported by 6,570 dairy farm families. Redding noted that there are two primary ways to find local milk: looking for the PA Preferred logo or the plant code 42 on the packaging. Both indicate that the milk was produced in Pennsylvania. Plant codes, which represent the state in which the milk was processed, are usually printed near the top of the container or on the lid. A
code beginning with 42 signals that milk was processed in Pennsylvania and likely to have come from a farm within the state. Choose PA Dairy is a promotional campaign managed by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture in partnership with the Center for Dairy Excellence, Pennsylvania Dairymen’s
Association, PA Preferred, American Dairy Association Northeast, and Professional Dairy Managers of Pennsylvania. For more information on local milk, readers may visit http://choosepadairy.com. Oral Hygiene Tips For Pets to those that occur in people. While dental caries (cavities) are less likely, abscesses, infections, broken teeth, and palate defects can occur. Signs of potential oral problems include bad breath, abnormal chewing, disinterest in eating, swelling in the gums, tenderness when the mouth is touched, or bleeding. Pets may become irritable if their mouths are bothering them, so if behavior changes are observed, dogs or cats should be seen by a veterinarian to find out if a dental issue is at the root of the problem. Some pet owners are reticent to handle oral health care for their companion animals because they fear the pet may bite if uncomfortable. Although this is always a
Money-Saving Travel Tips For Retirees Though a transient lifestyle is something few people aspire to during much of their lives, come retirement, the idea of staying in a place for only a short time has more appeal. According to a 2014 study from the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies, 36 percent of baby boomers want to spend their retirements traveling. Many retirees are succeeding in doing just that, as a study from the luxury travel network Virtuoso found that today’s seniors spent an average of just over $11,000 per year on travel. That was more than any other generation, highlighting just how much older adults like to get out and explore the world. Retirees who fear they cannot afford to travel can explore the various ways for seniors to cut costs and still satisfy their wanderlust during retirement. Seniors are encouraged to take advantage of age-related discounts. Some adults prefer to hide their ages, but when it comes time to travel during retirement, honesty is the best policy. Many businesses
that cater to travelers offer discounts to seniors. Car rental agencies, hotels, travel agencies, and cruise lines may offer direct discounts to customers age 65 and older, while membership in organizations such as AAA and AARP may make seniors eligible for additional discounts. Discounts on lodging and airfare might net the biggest savings, but even discounts on various smaller expenses can add up to big savings. Travel agencies should not be overlooked. While many prospective travelers’ first instincts are now to visit various travel websites in an effort to find the most affordable trips, it is important that travelers not overlook travel agencies when planning trips. Travel websites, though a valuable resource, only list the hotels and airlines that agree to be included on their sites. While many participate, some do not, and those that do not may instead work independent of travel websites or partner with travel agencies. Travel agencies have access to
the latest information, and many specialize in certain countries, knowing all the attractions visitors want to see. Travel agencies may offer packages that include admissions to popular attractions, which can be more affordable than planning a trip a la carte. Traveling as part of a group is also an option. Group travel may not appeal to everyone, but it should appeal to older, budget-conscious travelers. Retirees who are uncomfortable driving at home will likely be even less comfortable driving in foreign countries where the rules of the road are not the same. Traveling in groups, whether it is with a retirement community, religious organization, or another program, can save travelers substantial amounts of money. Many hotels and tourist attractions offer steep discounts for group tours, which can even be arranged through travel agencies. A hidden benefit of signing up for a group tour is the chance to meet new people and develop new relationships with fellow globetrotters.

Oral hygiene does not begin and end with regular brushing. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) also suggests pet lovers work with a veterinary dentist to evaluate the health of teeth, the jaws, and the roots below the gum line. These professionals are invested in all aspects of oral health care and can be called on for routine cleaning, filing, extraction, or tooth repairs, if need be. The AVMA says that periodontal disease is the most common dental condition in dogs and cats, and by the time the animal reaches three years of age, it may have some early evidence of periodontal disease, which can only worsen if preventative measures are not taken. It is not just what a pet puts inside its mouth that can make a difference in comfort and health, but the way pet owners take care of pets’ teeth, gums, and more. Oral hygiene, this oft-overlooked component of pet care can mean the difference between a happy, healthy pet and one that may be suffering in silence. The American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC) says brushing an animal’s teeth is the single most effective means to maintain oral health between professional vet examinations. Bacteria that forms naturally in an animal’s mouth will contribute to the formation of plaque which, left untreated, can lead to periodontal disease. By brushing away the precursors to plaque, pet owners can achieve optimal dental health for their pets.

offered, a bounce house will be on-site, and a local Christian radio station will broadcast live from the venue. “Cavod is not just a dance class or a music lesson,” explained Dienner. “We’re creating a place where everyone can come and be a part of something. We’re building a community that is safe and family-oriented with excellent training.” Regular performances have been a hallmark of Cavod open houses in the past. This year, Dienner has lined up gymnastics, theater, dance, and handto-hand combat demonstrations every 30 minutes. In addition, characters from a variety of Cavod’s theater shows will be present to meet attendees. Cavod instructors will be present to meet visitors and discuss their teaching approaches. “ We will have three new music instructors who will give private lessons in piano, guitar, and voice, as well as a new professional dance instructor,” noted Dienner. Every half hour, attendees will have a chance to win door prizes donated by local businesses, and at the end of the open house a grand prize featuring a variety of experiences, including tickets to shows, will be given away. Hand-to-Hand Combat, which teaches a defensive martial art, is one of Cavod’s newer offerings, along with Intro to Dance, designed for teenagers and adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities. The weekly dance class will include ballet, jazz, modern, and hip-hop with the goal of teaching self-expression to students with unique abilities. Free food options at the open house will include hot dogs, popcorn, and soda. A local vendor will provide free ice cream cones for those who register for classes that day or who have already registered for the fall session. Additional registration specials will include free popcorn for a performance season at Cavod for those who register by Monday, July 16. For those who register by Wednesday, Aug. 1, and pay for their first month’s tuition, a drawing will be held to win a free month’s tuition at Cavod. “It’s a fun day for the whole family,” noted Dienner. “The parents enjoy coming, and the children usually don’t want to leave.” That makes Dienner happy because it fits in with the academy’s goals. “We want people to feel they can be part of the Cavod community,” she said. Readers who would like to peruse the fall Cavod Academy schedule of classes may visit www.cavodacademy.com. Individuals who have questions may call 717-354-3355.

but there are some medicines that are made from snake venom.” He explained that venom is an ingredient that is used in the treatment of diseases such as cancer and glaucoma, as well as for pain management. He concluded the presentation by bringing out a very large container and promising to show an American alligator. Although there was one inside, it was a very tiny young alligator. Rothacker compared the little creature to David in the Bible, who - despite being small of stature - was able to defeat Goliath and went on to become king. “You can learn about God from His creation,” Rothacker said. “When we look at these little alligators, it reminds me of what God does. When He wants to do something big, He doesn’t always (choose) the biggest, strongest person - like King David in the Bible, who was one of the great kings in the Old Testament.” Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary is a reptile rescue and
Vegetables are more versatile than many people may know. Steaming or sautéing vegetables might be among the most popular ways to cook veggies, but grill masters know that it is not just main dishes that taste great when cooked over an open flame. As the following recipe for Charred Green Beans with
Lemon Verbena Pesto from Karen Adler and Judith Fertig’s “The Gardener and The Grill” (Running Press) can attest, grilled vegetables make for simple yet satisfying side dishes. Charred Green Beans with Lemon Verbena Pesto (Serves 2 to 4) Green Beans 1 1/2 lbs. slender green beans 2 tsp olive oil Lemon Verbena Pesto 1 cup fresh lemon verbena leaves (substitute fresh lemon balm leaves) 2 garlic cloves 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese 1/4 cup pine nuts or English walnuts 1/2 cup olive oil Fine kosher or sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste Instructions: 1 - Prepare a hot fire in the grill. 2 - Toss the beans with olive oil and place in a perforated grill basket or wok set on a baking sheet. 3 - For the pesto, combine the lemon verbena, garlic, cheese, and nuts in a food processor and pulse to puree. Slowly add the olive oil with the processor running until the mixture thickens and emulsifies, about 1 minute. Season to taste with salt and pepper. The pesto will keep in the refrigerator for 7 to 10 days or it may be frozen for up to 3 months. 4 - Place the grill wok or basket directly over the fire and stirgrill, tossing the beans with wooden paddles or grill spatulas until crisp-tender, about 5 to 8 minutes. Transfer the grilled beans to a large bowl and toss with about 1/4 cup of the pesto or to taste.

snake. “This is a good snake to have in your yard,” he said. “Rat snakes do not have venom. If you meet a rat snake, you are not in danger. The rat snakes like to eat thousands of rodents. They are an important part of the ecosystem.” He then showed the crowd a hognose snake. “They hiss as loudly as possible, like when you are getting a flat tire,” said Rothacker. “If you get closer, they roll over on their back and (play dead). If you roll him right side up, he will roll back over to try to convince you that he is still dead.” Rothacker emphasized that all animals - including venomous snakes - were created by God and that every creature has a purpose. “I understand that lot of people are scared of venomous snakes, but they take out rodents and ticks and things that need to be under control,” he said. “There is also some good that comes from venom. Of course, they make the anti-venom which is used when you get bit by a snake,

School Receives Recognition Twin Valley Middle School (TVMS) celebrated its 2018 Don Eichhorn Schools: Schools to Watch Program designation with a schoolwide pep rally on May 11. Afterward, the board held a reception, featuring artistic and
musical performances and recognition of the school’s students, staff and leadership by board president Gary McEwen, superintendent Robert Pleis, Sen. Judith Schwank and Sen. John Rafferty Jr. State director of Pennsylvania Association for Middle Level Education Bruce Vosburgh presented the certificate and
spoke to the audiences at both gatherings. TVMS joins 35 other Pennsylvania middle-grades schools recognized previously. TVMS was to be recognized nationally with all the other recognized Schools to Watch schools across the country in Washington, D.C., at the National Forum’s National Schools to Watch conference from June 28 to 30. The Schools to Watch selection process is based on a written application that requires schools to

show how they met criteria developed by the National Forum. TVMS was visited by state teams that observed classrooms; interviewed administrators, teachers, students, and parents; and examined achievement data, suspension rates, the quality of lessons, and student work. TVMS is initially recognized for a three-year period, and at the end of three years, it must demonstrate progress on specific goals in order to be redesignated. The Schools to Watch program requires TVMS to not just identify strengths, but also to focus on areas for continuous improvement. For more information about the Schools to Watch program,

Recent high school graduates (from left) Anthony Mazur, Eric Beery, Katherine Baker, Ben Mellema, and Jarod Dagney will represent the United States in the International Young Physicists Tournament from July 19 to 25 in Beijing, China. By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
Students from three area schools have earned places on the United States team that will take part in the International Young Physicists Tournament (IYPT) in Beijing, China, on Thursday, July 19, through Wednesday, July 25. Katherine Baker of Coatesville Area Senior High School (CASH), Eric Beery and Anthony Mazur of Phoenixville Area High School (PAHS), and Jarod Dagney and Ben Mellema of Octorara Area High School (OAHS), along with two alternates, Willetta Wisely from PAHS and Kyle Quinn from OAHS, were chosen for the local team at a selection competition at the Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU) in March. On April 14, the five team
members and two alternates traveled to the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia for the regional competition, where they defeated a team from Princeton Regional Institute of Science and Math, a New Jersey STEM high school, to earn the right to represent the United States in the international competition. The students began to prepare for the regional competition when they started the school year last fall. They were presented with 17 physics problems that do not have readily available answers. Working in clubs after school and in their free time, they researched the problems and came up with solutions and presentations. Each school has a teacher involved in its club to help the students with their research and to

prepare them for competition. Assisting teachers are William McWatters, OAHS; David Fenimore, CASH; and Jay Jennings, PAHS. Thirty-five teams will compete in the IYPT, where the five local students hope to be among the top 15 finishers. The team members all have a knowledge of each of the 17 problems, but each of them has specialized in two or three specific problems. Since the team was selected, the students have continued to work alone and together to prepare for the IYPT. The problems represent a wide range of physics topics. Ben took on the acoustic levitation problem, and with the help of other OAHS Physics Club members, created a working model that can keep very small, lightweight foam balls hovering in mid-air by the use of sound waves.
Because the competition is being held in China, the team members are unable to take the equipment they have built to the IYPT with them. Instead, they will be prepared with data, videos, and PowerPoint presentations. For the IYPT competition, a team will present its findings on one of the problems to a panel of judges and two other teams. One of those teams will dispute that solution, and the other will review how well the solution and the dispute were presented, commenting on each. All three teams will be scored on their work. “It forces you to find a way to articulate your thoughts to someone who has no idea what you’re talking about. I don’t think you get that experience anywhere else, especially in a traditional school setting,” Eric said. “One of the most important parts is the mathematical theory, so you have to come up with the mathematical models to demonstrate how the phenomenon occurs. There’s experimentation and there’s math theory, and you have to get all of those into the presentation, so it makes sense.” The international tournament has been held annually since 1988. A grant and funding from the school districts are helping to fund the team’s trip to China. Although there will be teams from throughout the world, the competition will be held in English. To learn more about the event, readers may visit www.iypt.org. All students on the team are recent graduates of their respective high schools. They all plan to continue their education in the fall: Jarod at the University of Delaware, Ben at Drexel University, Katherine at Ursinus College, Eric at Haverford College, and Anthony at Rochester Institute of Technology.
Donations Sought For Food Boxes With students home from school for the summer, even more nonperishable goods and toiletries are needed to fill the Community Food Boxes that have been installed throughout the community by It Takes a Village, a nonprofit organization that was founded in the spring of 2017. The boxes are located along Business Route 30 between Downingtown and Coatesville. A plaque is posted on each box that reads, in part, “Take only what you need, leave behind what you can, be the village for your neighbor.” In order to keep the program going, a core group of volunteers, called Box Buddies, keeps the containers restocked. The public may also contribute to the effort by donating items such as pasta, boxed macaroni and cheese, beef jerky, tuna and chicken salad kits, canned vegetables, peanut butter and jelly, as well as personal care items such as soap and shampoo, hand lotion, tissues and diapers. Donations of pet food will also be accepted. Items that should not be placed in the boxes include clothing and shoes, home-cooked items, items not in their original sealed packaging, razors, hand sanitizer, mouthwash, frozen food and blankets and bedding. Those interested in participating in the effort may join the private Facebook group of It Takes a Village at www.facebook.com/ groups/ittakesavillagecc. Those who visit the page can see daily updates of which boxes are especially in need of donated items. People are also welcome to post
