Youths Share Their Knowledge, Skills At 4-H Event By Francine Fulton

Youths from 4-H clubs throughout Chester County proudly showed the animals they have been raising throughout the year, as well as their projects on a variety of topics, during the Chester County 4-H Fair held Aug. 6 to 11 at the Romano 4-H Center in Honey Brook. The event also gave youths an opportunity to share their knowledge with others. On Aug. 7, free tours of the fair were offered to the community. The tours were conducted by 4-H members, including Zach Johnson of Elverson, who is a member of the Chester County 4-H Swine Club and the Chester County 4-H Livestock Judging Team. “(The Swine Club) is actually the largest (4-H) club, consisting of over 60 people, Zach said, noting that the club meets at the Romano 4-H Center. “We have kids

from all over Chester County. He said meetings include general business and an occasional guest speaker. “Speakers come in and teach us how to continually care for our pigs, said Zach. “We had a speaker who came from Ohio, and he told us about showmanship and how to make our pigs ‘drive’ across the ring, which helps with performance. Aug. 7 was also the day of the fair’s Swine Show, which was especially challenging for the animal handlers due to the high summer temperatures. “We try to keep (the animals) as cool as possible. We have fans in here, and we cool them down, Zach said. “Your pig should be sprayed down with cold water at least once every half hour throughout the day, noted Nelson Beam of Elverson, an adult leader of the Swine Club, who was on hand See 4-H Fair pg 4

Tour Promotes Baseball, Community Service By Francine Fulton

Not only do youths in the Potter Summer Baseball Tour enjoy playing and sharing their love of the sport, they also spend time working on community service projects. This year marked the ninth Potter Summer Baseball Tour, a camp led by Jeff Potter, a 1972 sixth-round draft pick of the Detroit Tigers. The tour included a 32-day trek across Virginia, Maryland, Ohio and Pennsylvania, during which youths enjoyed playing baseball and working in local communities.

Members of the Potter Summer Baseball Tour worked at the Twin Valley Food Pantry during their visit to the area in July. They also conducted a food drive for the pantry. The group recently made a stop locally, where they completed volunteer service See Tour pg 8

New Theater Company Sets Auditions By Francine Fulton

Zach Johnson of Elverson, a member of the Chester County 4-H Swine Club and the Chester County 4-H Livestock Judging Team, was on hand at the recent 4-H Fair to show his animals and to conduct tours for fair visitors.

Revival Productions, a new nonprofit theater company in Coatesville, recently announced that it will hold open auditions for its upcoming performance of “Miscast Broadway. The show will feature traditional Broadway tunes by unexpected performers. “‘Miscast Broadway’ is a show where actors, singers and dancers perform popular Broadway songs, but with a twist - the song the performer chooses must not match their type, age or gender, explained Vinnie Zambuto, the theater’s director of marketing. He cited an example of an older woman or man singing “It’s the Hard Knock Life, which is normally performed by young orphans in the See Auditions pg 6

In the summer of 2016, a shipping container called the HOOP was transformed by volunteers at Hopewell United Methodist Church (UMC) in Downingtown into a kitchen and meeting room. The container was also filled with donations before being sent to Mosaic, an organization that helps orphaned children in South Africa. The container was added to the Mosaic Paarl Community Center, which already consisted of eight previously renovated shipping containers that were attached together. This summer, local volunteers are again renovating a shipping container, which is currently situated in the far corner of Hopewell UMC’s parking lot. Once completed,

HOOP 2 will be made into two rooms to be used for job training for parents who have adopted or are fostering orphaned children in South Africa. Members of the Rotary Club of Thorndale-Downingtown recently joined the effort by volunteering to add drywall to the interior of the container. Rotary member Elva Wright, who is also member of Hopewell UMC, said that the Rotary Club is involved with local and international charities. “The motto of Rotary is ‘Service Above Self,’ and with that each Rotary Club has a local emphasis and an international emphasis,” she stated. “We’re always looking for projects.” The group was welcomed by church member Tony Brantzeg, who is project chair for HOOP 2. He displayed a photo of the community center built out of shipping containers. “A couple of years ago, we renovated a 40-foot container here and we called it the HOOP, which is a South African word for ‘hope’ and loosely stands for ‘Helping Orphans Out of Poverty,” he explained. He said that the kitchen portion of the container is used to serve breakfasts and snacks to local children. “About 160 kids come for that every day,” he stated. “Before the kitchen, they had to bring the food in. They were ecstatic when we provided the kitchen.” The meeting room is used by more than 100 children during Mosaic’s afterschool program. Brantzeg, who has traveled to South Africa about 20 times, noted that Mosaic was founded by South Africans Meyer and Louise Conradie, when they were only 21. “(They) felt specifically called to address the issue of orphaned and vulnerable children,” he noted. While displaying a photo of a brick home, Brantzeg explained that Mosaic identifies families that have taken in orphaned children and relocates them from makeshift shelters into 600-square-foot brick homes. The homes are completed by volunteers and local workers.

Karen Ladd Baker, president of Mosaic USA, was also on hand to greet the volunteers from the Rotary Club. She noted that Mosaic has been serving children and families in South Africa for 10 years. “Our goal is that all of (the orphans) will have the home and the care they deserve,” she said. The container is scheduled to be shipped this fall. The community is invited to participate in the renovation or to donate new and gently used items that will be placed in the container before shipping, including kitchen essentials, such as cookie sheets and mixing bowls, along with dictionaries, wooden puzzles, educational toys and youth-size clothing. For more details on the project and how to donate time or goods, readers may visit www.hopewell umc.org/the-hoop-2.

Auditions from pg 1 Broadway play “Annie.” “(The goal) is to mix things up and be a little silly,” he said. Auditions will be held on Thursday, Aug 23, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Gordon Early Literacy Center, 351 Kersey St., Coatesville. Those wishing to audition must register in advance at www.revival -productions.com/auditions. “The revue concept is popular among theaters all around the country,” noted Zambuto. “We will put together a show of people singing and dancing. It will be individual performances, but everyone will rehearse together and create a cohesive show.” Performers are asked to prepare two 32-bar cuts, an up-tempo tune and a ballad unlike their normal “type.” Performers should be prepared to dance, if asked. If needed, a dance call will take place at approximately 8:15 p.m. An accompanist will be provided. The performers must be age 16 or older and must prepare a dance or tune that is family-friendly. “They should have musical ability and a theater performance background,” Zambuto noted. “Miscast Broadway” will be performed at the Gordon Center on Saturday, Oct. 13, at 7 p.m. All proceeds from ticket sales will go toward funding Revival’s 2019 performance season and its Youth Summer Theatre Camp series. “The (Gordon Early Literacy Center) is located two blocks off Lincoln Highway,” noted Zambuto. “The school district has given us this space to use as our theater. It is a full auditorium with over 500 seats.” Revival Productions was founded in October of 2017. The goal of the theater is to provide quality and affordable live entertainment in the city of Coatesville, which is curently undergoing a revitalization. For more information, readers may contact Zambuto at vinniezambuto@revival -productions.com or visit www.revival-productions.com.

The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) has posted information about Honoring Our Veterans license plates that community members may obtain for their vehicles as a way to show patriotism and support veterans in need. Available for passenger cars, motorcycles and light-duty trucks up to 14,000 pounds, the license plates may be purchased by anyone. A portion of the proceeds benefits Pennsylvania’s Veterans’ Trust Fund (VTF). The VTF issues grants to statewide charitable organizations that aid veterans service organizations and county directors of veterans affairs. These advocates use available grants to assist veterans in need of shelter and necessities of living, among other services. In addition to the sales of the license plates, there are a number of other programs designed to help fund the VTF in support of Pennsylvania veterans. Roadside Litter Program Posted Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful has a statewide adoption program available to residents, local groups, and businesses to become part of the solution to roadside litter. The program is an option for most types of local areas, such as municipal roads, communities, parks, neighborhood blocks, greenways, waterways, and trails. According to Keep America Beautiful’s 2009 “National Visible Litter Survey and Litter Cost Study,” litter clean-up costs the U.S. more than an estimated $11.5 billion each year with municipalities spending more than $790 million and counties spending $185 million each year. The Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful adoption program works to help mitigate the costs associated with cleaning up by encouraging local residents to take ownership of communities. Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful provides a sign recognizing the groups or individuals who have adopted the road or area and seeks the support of the local municipalities to provide the sign post, install the sign, and provide trash disposal options, as needed. The benefits of removing roadside litter are far-reaching. It sends a message to travelers that littering and dumping will not be tolerated, removes dangers to people, animals and equipment, makes our communities more attractive for residents, tourists and potential newcomers and increases property values and community pride. Removing roadside litter is good for everyone. By participating in this program, residents will invest in a cleaner, more livable community. Readers may visit www.keep pabeautiful.org and click on Keep It or contact Stephanie Larson at slarson@keep pabeautiful.org or 724-836-4121, ext. 104, for more information. For information about adopting a state maintained road, readers may visit the PA Department of Transportation at www.penndot.gov and search Adopt -a-Highway.

The second half of the team held a youth baseball clinic in Fleetwood. On July 22, the youths handed out 40 egg sandwiches that were donated by a local coffee house at the Hope Rescue Mission. After breakfast was served, the members of the tour attended the mission’s church service. The group members then completed several projects that included cleaning and weeding the mission’s gardens, repairing a fence and repainting a stair railing. They also finished the construction of the potting table and the picnic table. On July 23, the youths attended a breakfast with Dan Clouser, president of the Big Vision Foundation in Leesport, an organization that promotes sports and volunteerism. Clouser then provided a tour of the facility, which features multiple baseball and softball fields. Potter said that special plans are being developed for next summer’s 10th annual tour. “The theme of our tour will be fun and fitness,” he said. “We’re trying to work in the area to (provide) four or five days of different fitness events, games and contests.” Potter, who is originally from the Pittsburgh area, signed a

aware that the tour will be a combination of playing baseball and working hard to serve the community. “Before I put a boy or girl on the tour, I sit down with the family, so they have a good understanding that although we play baseball - and we want kids to love baseball - it’s about giving back and paying forward and (doing) a lot of work,” he said. This summer, tour members arrived in the area on July 20 and were split into two groups. One group traveled to the Brandywine Battlefield to clear out an overgrown area in the northern part of the park. The second group held a food drive at the Morgantown Crossings shopping center to benefit the TVFP. The youths collected several vanloads of food as well as more than $500 in cash, all of which was donated to pantry. Later that day, the players offered a free youth baseball clinic for more than 20 players from Twin Valley Little League. On July 21, half of the group went to Hope Rescue Mission to help serve lunch and begin a few maintenance projects, including the construction of a new octagonal picnic table and a potting table. The wood for the projects was donated by a local business.

Outing Provided By David’s Drive By Francine Fulton

When the David’s Drive 831 charity was provided with tickets to a recent practice session of the Philadelphia Eagles, representatives of the organization immediately donated a majority of those free passes to veterans who reside at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center. Thirty individuals, including veterans and their support staff, along with David’s Drive committee members, were able to visit the Aug. 5 practice of the championship football team, held at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. The event was designated as Military Appreciation Night. “We had seven (people) from David’s Drive (attend); the rest were veterans and support staff,” explained David Turner Sr., founder and president of David’s Drive. The veterans were bused to the stadium by the VA and provided with box lunches. Upon arrival at the stadium and after the resolution of a computer ticketing glitch, members of the group were surprised to learn that they would be given access to club-level seating.

“It took us a while to get in and once we got in, I have a buddy in the Eagles (organization) and he met us at the door and ushered us through, and guest services gave us passes for the club level,” said Turner. “We were treated to club-level seating, which was air conditioned, and there was complimentary food and beverages and sideline access.” Turner, who was accompanied by his wife, Joy, and their daughter, Sam, said he enjoyed visiting with the veterans, most of whom had never visited the Eagles’ stadium. “One of the vets told me his mom was an Eagles fan. They had gone to the Vet (Veterans Stadium) but never had a chance to go to the Linc,” Turner related. “Joy, Sam and I sat back and were lucky enough to watch them talk and tell stories about their Eagles (memories).” Turner said the highlight of the event came at the end of the evening. “At the end of the practice, they brought about 100 veterans all dressed in their uniforms and they stood on one sideline from end zone to end zone and on the other side was a whole line of Eagles players,” Turner explained. “They all walked to the center of the field, shook hands and the players took their jerseys off and gave them to the veterans. It was really moving.”

He said that the local veterans really enjoyed their special treatment at the practice. “The Eagles showed their love and respect for our veterans, and our veterans appreciated it,” Turner said. “It was nice that they got a little bit of the VIP treatment.” David’s Drive is named for David Turner Jr., an avid Eagles fan, who was a cashier at the canteen at the VA hospital when he died in 2009 at the age of 20. His family started the charity in 2010 to improve the lives of veterans. The organization’s motto is “Helping Veterans Because We Should.” Since its formation, David’s Drive has donated more than $1 million to support veterans. In addition, the organization sponsors parades and picnics for the veterans, along with other social outings. David’s Drive also assists veterans transitioning from homelessness to independent living through the Housing and Urban Development - Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUDVASH) program. The program provides housing vouchers to homeless veterans and gives them an opportunity to live independently in Chester, Delaware and Montgomery counties by providing appliances, household goods, personal care products and financial assistance for rent and utilities. Furniture is provided to the veterans through the charity’s partnership with the Community Warehouse Project. For more information about David’s Drive, including volunteer opportunities, readers may email davidsdrive@verizon.net or visit www.davidsdrive831.org or www.facebook.com/davids.drive. Tickets to the event were provided by David’s Drive 831.

Lyme Disease Program Planned

The Turner family, including (from left) Sam, Joy and David Sr., formed the David’s Drive charity to honor David Turner Jr., who worked at the Coatesville VA Medical Center at the time of his death. The charity provides assistance to veterans and arranges social outings for them, such as the recent trip to watch a Philadelphia Eagles practice. Real Shredded Cheddar Cheese

A presentation on Lyme disease will take place on Thursday, Aug. 23, and Friday, Aug. 24, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the River Room at the Brandywine Conservancy, 1 Hoffmans Mill Road, Chadds Ford. Doug Fearn, president of the Lyme Disease Association of Southeastern Pennsylvania Inc., will be the presenter. The program is free and open to the public. The Lyme Disease Association of Southeastern Pennsylvania Inc. is a nonprofit dedicated to helping the community learn about Lyme and other tick-borne diseases.

Waterloo’s first appearance at Music Fest,” said Ken Ross, pantry director, who noted that efforts are made by event organizers to include a variety of musical styles. Ticketholders will get admission to the event, a beverage and a picnic burger or hot dog with fixings. All proceeds from ticket sales will go to the food pantry. To order tickets, readers may visit www.honeybrookfoodpantry.org /music-fest. Tickets are also available at the golf club. Although advance ticket purchase is recommended, tickets will also be sold at the gate. Attendees are asked to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating. The event will be held rain or shine. In the case of severe weather, activities will be moved into the large barn at the golf club. The music program will be the pantry’s final fundraiser for the year. Previously held fundraisers included a dinner in April and a golf outing in July. “The first year (at Music Fest), we raised $5,000 and close to 200 people attended,” said Ross. “Last year, we had 350 people and we made about $7,500.” Ross will give a very brief talk about the pantry prior to the performances. He noted that the group’s mission statement is “to

respectively serve area residents in need while empowering them toward food security and independence.” “Before the main event, I will tell a little bit about the program and the numbers we serve,” he said. “We will also be talking about the independence we encourage with the program. (I) will talk about how the money we make at this event is being used and (how) we are good stewards of (people’s) donations.” The Honey Brook Food Pantry is located at the Good Food Distribution Center, 5064 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook. Two distributions are held each month - on the second Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on the fourth Wednesday from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Although it operates independently, the Honey Brook facility is one of the official food pantries of the Chester County Food Bank. It serves residents of Chester County living in the Twin Valley School District and the immediate surrounding area. During the distributions, clients receive nonperishable food items, beef and poultry, dairy products and fresh produce. In addition, healthy cooking demonstrations are provided during distribution days. Every distribution is also staffed by a registered dietitian and health educator from Chester County Hospital, who performs wellness checks and provides health education. Ross reported that the pantry serves nearly 700 people per month. Additionally, since many of the pantry’s clients have disabilities or are elderly, pantry volunteers make approximately 30 home food deliveries per month. For more information about the pantry, readers may visit www.honeybrookfood pantry.org or search for “Honey Brook Food Pantry” on Facebook. For up-to-date information about food distributions, readers may call 610-273-6102. Those interested in volunteering, donating food or conducting a food drive are asked to email Ross at KRoss1414@aol.com.

The Lititz American Legion Riders from Post 56 will hold their 13th annual VA Hospice Ride on Sunday, Aug. 19. Registration will start at 10 a.m., and the ride will begin at noon. The scenic, guided ride will start at the Lititz American Legion on Broad Street; travel to New Holland American Legion, Morgantown American Legion, and Richland American Legion; and end back at Lititz American Legion, where refreshments will be available. Separate fees have been set for riders and for passengers. The ride will be held in memory of David Little, a life member of the Lititz American Legion and the service officer before he passed away earlier this year. Little was a chief warrant officer, retiring from the U.S. Army after 24 years of service. A decorated veteran, he served two tours in Vietnam, receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross, two Purple Hearts, the Combat Infantry Badge, and other honors.

As a helicopter pilot in Vietnam, Little was shot down twice while spraying Agent Orange, intensifying his exposure to the chemical. Little required 114 blood transfusions in one year. He was admitted to the hospice unit of the Lebanon VA Hospital in February 2018 and died on March 9. In addition to the Lititz American Legion, Little had also been a member of the Columbia American Legion, the Manheim VFW Post 5956, and the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Chapter 107. A 32nddegree Mason, Little was a member of the Robert Burns Lodge 464 in Harrisburg; the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Harrisburg; and the Harrisburg Consistory. He held degrees in both electrical and mechanical engineering, and he was an inventor, receiving patents for several of his inventions. For more information, readers may call Scott at 717-572-5979.

The Lititz Legion Riders from Post 56 will hold the annual VA Hospice Ride on Sunday, Aug. 19. The scenic ride will begin and end at the Lititz American Legion.

family’s genealogy. The committee has compiled information on the descendants of Jacob and Maria Krey Sensenig, who immigrated from Switzerland around 1717. The committee will not add births, deaths, and marriages that occur after Dec. 31, but organizers will continue to update events occurring prior to Dec. 31. The work will be offered on a computer disc for a fee. Plans to publish a Sensenig Encyclopedia are under discussion. Maps will be available to visit the Sensenig Farm Cemetery located off of White Oak Road. Anyone who thinks they may be a Sensenig descendent or wants to find out is encouraged to attend the reunion. For more information, readers may call Sally Shirk at 717-464-1614 or email imashirk@comcast.net with the subject line “Sensenig Genealogy.”
