MagniFest will be all about the music
BY FRANCINE FULTON
MagniFest, an outdoor music and praise event featuring live musical performances, will take place on Saturday, Aug. 19, from 2 to 10 p.m. at St. Mary of Providence Center, 227 Isabella Road, Elverson. Also featured will be food, vendors and children’s activities. Mass will be celebrated at 5 p.m. by the Rev. Shaun Mahoney.
The headliner will be singer-songwriter Marie Miller, a recording artist from Nashville, Tenn. Miller is a folk and pop singer who performed for Pope Francis during his 2015 visit to Philadelphia. She opened for the Backstreet Boys, toured with American Idol winner Kris Allen and Five for Fighting and had songs featured on pop radio and ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars.” “She is a Catholic singer-songwriter who has performed in Philadelphia a number of times over the years,” said event organizer Beth Riordan.

StoryWalk unveiled at Berks Nature
BY FRANCINE FULTON
In May of 2022, Community Courier readers were invited to take a short drive to enjoy a StoryWalk trail located on the grounds of the arboretum at the Reading Public Museum. The trail, offered by the museum in partnership with Berks County Public Libraries, features laminated pages from storybooks that are attached to metal posts. As
visitors walk along the path, they are directed to the next page of the story.
On Aug. 1, Berks County Public Libraires unveiled another StoryWalk trail at Berks Nature, The Nature Place. Children from the Berks Nature Preschool assisted with the unveiling of the StoryWalk at the first signpost, which revealed the cover page of the story.

Some of the musicians will offer CDs for sale.
“There will be a prayer table for people who would like pray for anything or anyone,” Riordan noted. “People can write down their intentions and put them in a prayer box or pray right there. We will have a team praying all day.”

is eligible to join. There is also a ladies’ auxiliary and a Sons of the American Legion chapter, which are open to anyone over the age of 18 who is an immediate family member of an American Legion member or a deceased veteran. The post also includes the American Legion Riders, who are motorcycle enthusiasts.
“The Legionnaires have served in the military. Then you have the auxiliary and the Sons of the American Legion. You need to provide a

Those interested in membership may stop by the post to complete an application. Information about joining the organization will also be available at the event on Aug. 19.
“We are always looking for new members and volunteers, especially Legionnaires,” Hallen added, noting that the membership includes veterans from the Korean War and the Vietnam War.
Post members take part in various community service projects and hold fundraising events, such as an annual golf outing. The Legion Riders hold a bike show each June.
Last May, the American Legion installed a Little Free Library, which invites people to “take a book or share a book.”

The MagniFest is named to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Magnificat, also known as the Song of Mary, is the prayer of praise that Mary prayed when visiting her cousin Elizabeth. The timing of the festival is based on the celebration of the Feast of the Assumption on Aug. 15, which marks Mary’s

guests were invited to walk the trail and read “The Last Tree” written by author María Quintana Silva and illustrated by Silvia Álvarez, with Spanish translation by Jon Brokenbrow.
Participants in the ceremony included Stephanie Williams, interim administrator for Berks County Public Libraries; Berks Nature president Kimberly Murphy; Susan Banks, Pennsylvania deputy secretary of education; and Heather Sharpe, director of the Bureau of Library Development, Office of Commonwealth Libraries.
A StoryWalk is a project that was first created by Anne Ferguson and the Kellogg-Hubbard Library in Montpelier, Vt. The goal for the project is to promote both physical activity and early literacy by combining a children’s book with a walking trail.
Williams noted that while
StoryWalks have been used around the nation since their creation by Ferguson in 2007, storybook displays debuted in Berks County in 2020. There are now eight permanent and seasonal library StoryWalks within the county, including the Muhlenberg Rail Trail StoryWalk on Railroad Avenue in Temple and the Boyertown Park StoryWalk, located at 417 S. Madison St., Boyertown. All of the locations of the StoryWalk displays can be found at www.berkslibraries.org/ storywalks.
Plans call for the StoryWalk at Berks Nature to be changed four times per year. “Inside, there are different display boards that we change out,” explained Emily Orischak, community relations coordinator for Berks County Public Libraries. “The location of the posts won’t change, but the contents inside will.”
“Our hope is that individuals and families who visit the beautiful grounds of the Nature Place will enjoy the stories presented at the StoryWalk,” said Williams at the unveiling ceremony. “As the seasons change, visitors can come back and read new stories, as the StoryWalk will be updated quarterly.”
The StoryWalk at Berks Nature, The Nature Place is located at 575 St. Bernardine St., Reading. It follows the path from the parking lot to the Teaching Garden, which is just under a quarter of a mile. The StoryWalk is open to visitors from dawn to dusk. Visitors are encouraged to plan their visit when the Nature Place is open so that they can also enjoy the center’s free programming. The Nature Place is open on Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. To learn more, visit www.berksnature.org/ the-nature-place.

Saint Peter’s Village home to Cars and Coffee
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Combining his interest in cars along with his love of Saint Peter’s Village, Aaron Phillips, a 2022 graduate of Owen J. Roberts High School, is the founder of Cars and Coffee, a car show held in the historic village on the second Sunday of the month, weather permitting, from 8 to 11 a.m. Saint Peter’s Village is a popular community attraction that features small shops and eateries, but it is perhaps best known for the scenic French Creek, which flows over the rocks behind the shops. Many visitors come to view the cascading French Creek falls as well as enjoy the surrounding hiking trails.
Phillips said having a car show not only showcases the scenic location but also encourages visitors to shop or dine at the small businesses. “I have always lived here and wanted to bring car culture to the village,” said Phillips. “And, of course, I love helping out the village and helping it gain popularity.”
During the car shows, visitors are encouraged to
purchase coffee and breakfast items from one of the village’s shops and then view the cars, which are parked in the lot across from the Saint Peter’s Village post office, 3300 Saint Peter’s Road. “(The car show is from) 8 to 11 (a.m.), but people can stay however long they want to in the village,” noted Phillips. “There are shops and things for people to do.”
The car shows, which are free for spectators and vehicle owners, began three years ago after Phillips received permission from the corporation that owns the village property. “We originally were in the paved lot, but they asked us to move to the post office lot,” he said. “People still go and get their coffee and walk down to the car show.”
Cars and Coffee attracts anywhere from 50 to 80 cars each month. “(Visitors have said) that they have never seen a car show in such a unique environment,” Phillips said. “We get new faces and different cars every month, and it’s all varieties of cars. We get American cars, Japanese cars, classic and new.”
Phillips, whose parents own a shop in the village, is also a young entrepreneur. He started his own business, Devotion Detailing, during the pandemic. “People were not using their cars ... so I would come and detail (their cars) in the driveway,” he explained. “Along with detailing, I buy and sell cars, so I have taken cars (to the car show) through the years.” He also is a parttime student studying automotive technology.
Phillips especially enjoys it when people visit the village for the first time after learning about the car show. “It excites me every time I see the cars pulling up,” he shared. “It makes me feel sure I am doing something right. It’s such a nice environment to sit for a while, and you have the added benefit of the shops for people to check out.”
Saint Peter’s Village is located off Route 23 on Saint Peter’s Road in Warwick Township. To learn more about the car show, search for “Saint Peter’s Cars and Coffee” on Facebook or contact Phillips at aphillips6698@gmail.com.
Native tree and shrub sale posted
Penn State Extension Master Watershed Steward Program of Chester and Delaware counties will host its fourth annual native tree and shrub sale. The sale will feature a limited supply of 28 different trees and shrubs, all of which are native to Pennsylvania.
The trees and shrubs provide food, shelter and nesting habitat for wildlife, as well as privacy, shade, foliage and landscape beautification. Planting trees can also reduce flooding, stabilize soil and filter pollutants. The Master Watershed Stewards noted that fall is one of the best times to plant new trees.
