While it is not uncommon to hear praise music coming from a church sanctuary, a unique source of music at St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Birdsboro is its new ukulele band. During the summer, when Sunday school was not in session, the church offered a ukulele circle during that time period following the Sunday service. The group, led by pastor Jim Farnsworth and congregation member Greg Smith, was open to people of all ages, including beginners. “We are all learning together,” said Farnsworth. “We did ukulele circles this summer, and we had different guest instructors.” He noted that one of the sessions featured instructors from a local music store. Farnsworth explained that some ukuleles were loaned to the group

members by the church, while other students chose to bring their own instruments. “(Playing ukuleles) is a big trend right now,” he pointed out. “A lot of elementary schools are (offering lessons).” Even though Sunday school has started for the fall semester, Farnsworth emphasized that the group will continue to play together. “We will periodically play at services and around Christmas,” he noted. “(Our hope) is to go to local nursing homes and sing Christmas carols.” A Saturday evening Blessing of the Ukuleles service took place on Sept. 1, during which the ukulele band performed the hymn “Amazing Grace,” among other songs. A reception followed the service. St. Mark’s ukulele band will also perform on Sunday, Sept. 30, during the 9 a.m. worship service. Vocalists See Ukulele Band pg 7

In lieu of an admission fee, attendees are asked to bring nonperishable food items for donation to the Honey Brook Food Pantry. The band, which has performed with many notable artists, including Jason Mraz, David Gray and the Dave Matthews Band, features lead vocalist Pete Kilpatrick, an award-winning acoustic singer/songwriter whose music has also been featured on popular television shows. He will be accompanied by Tyler Stanley on keyboards, Matt Cosby on bass guitar, Ed Dickhaut on drums and Pete Morse on guitar. The Maine-based group will travel all the way to Honey Brook to play in the area for the first time. “We do quite a

few summer concert series in New England and wanted to branch out more and play in the Mid-Atlantic states, explained Kilpatrick, who has been named Maine’s Best Act and Best Vocalist four times in the Portland Best Music Awards. “We will be doing four shows in four days. The first will be (Washington), D.C., then Virginia, Maryland and then Pennsylvania. “We do similar shows in Vermont and New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts. We always have a really good time, he added. Kilpatrick said that the audience can expect to hear original tunes and cover music. “It will be a mix. We have seven original albums of music, (plus) we will do everything from Tom Petty to the Beatles, he explained. “For these types of events, it’s usually a mix

of families and older (folks), so it will be family-friendly. Kilpatrick said that the band is used to outdoor venues, such as the one in Honey Brook. “Living in Maine, we are used to extreme weather, he noted. “We’ve done outdoor concerts in the winter, which is really challenging. We’ve played with Blues Traveler on St. Patrick’s Day at an outdoor concert in Vermont, and it was negative 2 degrees. He said that the band has been playing together for 10 years at both small venues and for large crowds. For example, when opening for Barenaked Ladies, the band performed in front of 10,000 people. “We play two or three times a week from May to October. That is our busy time of year, Kilpatrick noted. “The rest of the year we work on writing music. At the upcoming concert in Honey Brook, Kilpatrick said that people are invited to dance and sing along with the band. “For the

summer concerts, people dance occasionally depending on the song; we definitely encourage it, he said, adding, “We love playing music and we love playing new places, and our music lends itself well to this type of setting. To learn more about the band and to hear samples of its music, readers may visit www.pete kilpatrickband.com. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be canceled by 1 p.m. on the day of the show. There will be a recorded message on the borough office line at 610-273-2020. Unsold items from both the yard sale and the children’s consignment sale will be donated to charity. The OJR High School band recently began its 2018 performance schedule, which includes halftime shows at football games and appearances at local holiday parades. The band also plays in the stands during the games and performs the national anthem. The band made its debut on Aug. 24 during OJR High School’s football game against Conestoga High School. According to Todd Mengel, high school band director, this year’s show is titled “The Legacy of John Williams, which is a tribute to the popular movie composer. Featured songs are from the movies “Jurassic Park, “Empire of the Sun, “Indiana Jones and “Star Wars. “It will be another OJR-style show all the way, said Mengel. “When audiences think about the OJR marching band, they know they are going to be treated to a big, bold and exciting show. I’m very sure that we will once again be the audience favorite. For more information about the high school band, readers may visit www.ojrhsband.com. Educator Grants Now Available The PPL Foundation would like to provide funding power for teachers to bring their ideas to life and spark students’ interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The PPL Empowering Educators program is designed to help K-12 teachers provide handson learning opportunities to enhance the classroom experience. This year, PPL will award $25,000 in Empowering Educators grants. Twenty-five teachers will receive $1,000 for supplies to help make their projects a reality. Each team will be judged on its project proposal, its school need, and potential overall impact. Through these competitive grants, teachers can receive $1,000 in funding for educational projects such as science fairs, energy conservation projects, renewable energy demonstrations, math competitions, and more. Last year, some of the projects that received funding ranged from building solar-powered cars to developing a school makerspace, a collaborative work space where students can explore and share innovative ideas. The grants are open to K-12 teachers in school districts in the 29 Pennsylvania counties served by PPL. To be eligible for an Empowering Educators grant, teachers must submit a contest application online at www.ppl empoweringeducators.com. Applications will be accepted online through Sunday, Sept. 30.

Hopewell Christian Fellowship in Elverson has announced the arrival of its new lead pastor, Gary Buck. Pastor Duane Britton, who served as the interim pastor for nearly five years, along with the elders and pastor Lester Zimmerman, lead apostle of the Hopewell Network of Churches, installed Buck in a special service on April 29. In some ways, this was a homecoming, as Buck and his family attended Hopewell when Buck was a youth. Buck received a Bachelor of Arts in biblical studies in 2000 from Lancaster Bible College, after which he spent a few years as a private school teacher and then became the director of Cross Connection Youth Ministries for

almost three years. In 2005, Buck was hired full time as the worship pastor of Petra Church in New Holland. During his time at that church, he joined the preaching team and produced three fulllength worship albums, including dozens of his own compositions. He is pursuing a master’s degree in biblical apologetics through Liberty University. Buck and his wife, Maria, were married in 2000, and they have four children. Run/Walk To Benefit Chester County Women’s Services By Francine Fulton

People of all ages are welcome to participate in the annual 5K run and 1-mile Walk for Life being presented on Saturday, Sept. 15, by Chester County Women’s Services (CCWS), a nonprofit pregnancy care medical center. Events will take place in Downingtown’s Kerr Park, Kardon Park and along the Struble Trail. Registration will open at 8 a.m. at Kerr Park, 1 Park Lane, Downingtown, located off Pennsylvania Avenue. Opening ceremonies will begin at 8:40 a.m. “One of our board members will speak about what CCWS is, and our board president will bless us in a prayer,” explained Dana Faragaso, race organizer. Participants will then walk a short distance along Pennsylvania Avenue and across its intersection with Route 282 to the entrance of the Struble Trail in Kardon Park. “One of our volunteers will lead the way with the American flag,” Faragaso said, noting that the race will start at the head of the Struble Trail. The 5K run and 1-mile walk will begin at 9 a.m. “It is a paved trail,” Faragaso explained. “The turnaround (locations) will be marked for the 1-mile walk and 5K run.” Following the running and walking event, Family Fun Day will take place in Kerr Park from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Events will include a Kids’ Run for children age 12 and under. “Everyone is welcome to come back to Kerr Park,” noted Faragaso. “The kids will run around a loop in the open field area around the park and earn a medal.” Family Fun Day will also include free children’s games, face painting and story time. Children will receive a “passport” and will check off the activities they complete. “Once the kids complete the activities on their ‘passport’ by getting each one stamped, they will receive tickets to win prizes,” Faragaso said. “They can also pick from a treasure box of prizes as well.” Attendees are encouraged to bring a baby item such as diapers, wipes or clothing to donate to CCWS to benefit clients in need. Proceeds from the event will support CCWS, a nondenominational ministry that has been

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful invites all educators to check out their Litter Free School Zone program, a comprehensive program that encourages young people to play an active role in protecting and improving the environment through recycling, litter awareness, and community stewardship. Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful provides a sign recognizing the participating school as a Litter Free School Zone. The school, in turn, organizes two cleanup or beautification events per year. There are currently more than 80 schools participating in the program. All schools are welcome - elementary through high school, public or private. Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful welcomes students, clubs, classes, and even entire school districts to participate in the Litter Free School Zone program. This program provides a fun and easy way for students to work together, learning valuable community leadership and responsibility skills while gaining a respect for the environment and the world around them. It is also an opportunity to develop a school-wide stewardship ethic and set a community example. The Litter Free School Zone program is sponsored by the PA Department of Environment Protection. the song “Beautiful” by Christina Aguilera, was awarded first runner-up. For her first runner-up award in Photogenic, Maille submitted a portfolio of four photos taken by local photographer Lee Shelly. As a result of her success at the state pageant, Maille has been invited to participate in the national pageant in Anaheim, Calif., this November, where pageant contestants will receive a complimentary tour of Hollywood and a trip to Disneyland. The National American Miss Pageants offer ageappropriate activities and competitions. Girls under the age of 12 are not allowed to wear makeup, and there is no swimsuit competition. The program is based on inner beauty, as well as poise and presentation. Emphasis is

put on the importance of developing self-confidence and learning good sportsmanship, as well as setting and achieving personal goals. The pageant recognizes the accomplishments of each girl while encouraging her to set goals for her future.

Maille McNicholas of Morgantown was named a top 10 finalist in the 2018 National American Miss Pennsylvania Pre-Teen Pageant and has been invited to participate in the national pageant in California in November.

Mill At Anselma from pg 1 By Francine Fulton

The Mill at Anselma, a National Historic Landmark located on Route 401 in Chester Springs, will host a Fall Auction Celebration on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 7 to 10 p.m. The catered event will include both silent and live auctions featuring a variety of donated items and services, as well as live music, food and tours. Mini-Split Fujitsu ductless mini-split air conditioners and heat pumps offer year-round wholehome comfort, in most climates. As much as half of the energy used in your home goes to heating and cooling. So making smart decisions about your home's heating and air conditioning system can have a big effect on your utility bills — and your comfort.

A dam broke at the Mill at Anselma during the flooding rains in mid-August. The dam allowed water to flow into the mill’s pond, powering its water wheel. A permanent solution to repair the dam is underway. Educational Trust, the nonprofit organization that acquired the mill in 1999. Caverly noted in mid-August, heavy rains washed out the dam used to redirect water into the mill’s pond. Water in the pond powers the mill’s water wheel and grindstones. “There is an unnamed stream that is a tributary of the Pickering Creek,” Caverly explained. “We had a dam set up to divert the water to the mill, but that got blasted out. The stream now goes (directly) into Pickering Creek.” He noted that there is some water remaining in the pond, but that the dam needs to be rebuilt so that the pond can fill up again. “We can run the mill for demonstration purposes, but we cannot rely on it for production services,” he said. “We need decent water pressure. If we don’t have a decent supply (of water), we can’t do our grinding of flour and cornmeal.” He noted that mill personnel are attempting to find the resources to fund the cost of the

fix, which includes applying for a grant, as well as consulting with professionals to create a longterm solution to the problem. Once the immediate emergency need is resolved, the mill plans to expand its interpretive space, partially opening the Miller’s House residence to tours and updating the historic Anselma Post Office located at the site. Plans also call for recognizing some of the historic figures who lived at the mill property during its years of operation. The Mill at Anselma is located at 1730 Conestoga Road, Chester Springs. For more information, readers may contact Caverly at executive.director@anselma mill.org. More information about the mill is available at www.anselmamill.org. Pictured on front: The Mill at Anselma will host a Fall Auction Celebration on Sept. 22. The catered event will include silent and live auctions, live music, food and tours.

There is also an option to attend a VIP reception at 6 p.m. For ticket information, readers may visit www.anselmamill.org/ fall-event or visit www.event brite.com and search for “The Mill at Anselma Annual Fall Celebration in Chester Springs.” The fundraiser will take place outdoors at the 22-acre historic site. “We will have a big tent set up where we will set out all the auction items,” said Will Caverly, the mill’s executive director. “Tables and chairs will be (available) for people to enjoy dinner and hors d’oeuvres, and there will be live music. It will be catered food; you will not leave hungry.” Silent auction items will include certificates for pet grooming and dinners, jewelry, a load of firewood and trips to local attractions. “For the live auction, we have a trip to Jamaica, a carriage ride, a side of beef, a catered dinner at the mill and small dinners where a chef serves you,” said Caverly. “This year, we will have a helicopter ride out of Lancaster Airport.” He pointed out that visitors will also be able to watch the mill in operation throughout the evening. “The mill will be running, and volunteers will be prepared to do tours and give information,” he said. “It’s a good time to meet other people who support the mill.” Visitors will also have a chance to meet Caverly, a resident of Elverson, who was named executive director in June. “We want people to come out and have a good time,” he said. All proceeds will benefit the operation of the mill and the Mill at Anselma Preservation and

The County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania (CCAP) has honored several Pennsylvania county leaders and others who have enhanced the well-being of counties and residents. The awards were given at the organization’s 2018 annual conference in Adams County. Eggleston was acknowledged for his service and association participation which has contributed to the advancement of county government, including projects related to communications with townships and boroughs; the North/South Corridor Project with Chatauqua County, N.Y.; a recycling center that assists with inmate work release programs, and human services advancements. CCAP’s Outstanding Chief Clerk/Administrator Award was presented to Lawrence County’s Jim Gagliano Jr. for his service as county administrator since 2005, after serving as the county’s

planning director. Gagliano has professionally and successfully met numerous challenges and currently serves as the executive director of the Redevelopment Authority, the Municipal Authority and the County Land Bank. The 2018 Outstanding Solicitor was given to Chester County’s Tom Whiteman for providing sound judgment with the best interests of the county and its residents in mind for more than 30 years. Concussion News Posted

Local Resident To Appear In Video Presentation

With many student athletes gearing up for fall sports practice, students, parents, and coaches are reminded about ways to prevent, recognize and manage concussions. A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or from a fall or blow to the body that causes the head and brain to move quickly back and forth. Concussions can have serious shortterm and long-term impacts, especially on young people whose brains are still developing. In 2011, the Safety in Youth Sports Act was signed into law in Pennsylvania, requiring all school entities to develop

Andrew Trygar of Downingtown will appear as part of the National Down Syndrome Society’s (NDSS) annual Times Square video presentation on Saturday, Sept. 15. The photographs featured in the video highlight children, teenagers, and adults with Down syndrome, with the purpose of promoting the value, acceptance, and inclusion of people with Down syndrome. The photo of Andrew Trygar, who has Down syndrome, was selected from more than 2,400 entries in the NDSS’ worldwide call for photos. Almost 500 photographs will appear in the video, which will be shown in the heart of Times Square. Andrew is 7 years old and is attending West Bradford Elementary School this fall. The Times Square video presentation will kick off Down Syndrome

Awareness Month, which is commemorated in October. The video presentation will be followed by the 24th annual Flagship Buddy Walk in New York City. This year, Buddy Walk events will be held in more than 275 cities across the country, as well as at select international locations, in and around October. More than 325,000 people are slated to participate around the globe. For information about the NDSS Buddy Walk Program, readers may visit www.buddywalk.org or call 800-221-4602. Trinity AG Distributes Free Food At Melton Center By Francine Fulton

As part of the Trinity Compassion Ministries (TCM) program at Trinity Assembly of God (AG), free food is now being distributed every Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Charles A. Melton Arts and Education Center, a nonprofit community center located at 501 E. Miner St., West Chester. Visitors will receive a bag of nonperishable food, as well as frozen food donated by local convenience stores. No proof of income or residency is required. “We are giving away canned foods and nonperishable food, and we have them prepacked in bags, so people can just pick them up,” explained Caleb Gudgeon, director of TCM. “(However), if people just need canned vegetables, they can (take those); it’s very informal. “ We are also giving out frozen breakfast sandwiches, chicken bites and soft pretzels,” he added. At this time of year, the volunteers from Trinity AG are stationed outside the Melton

Center on Thursday evenings. “Whenever the weather is nice, we will be right outside in the picnic table area,” Gudgeon noted. “In the case of inclement weather and when it gets colder, we will move indoors.” He added that signs will be posted directing visitors to the food giveaway. Gudgeon said that people are still learning about the distribution, which officially began on Aug. 23. “People will get to know us, and we’ll grow from there,” he said. The food distribution is the latest effort by TCM, whose mission is to serve hungry people in the community through its Joseph’s Closet food bank. Gudgeon explained that volunteers pick up food every day from local restaurants, fastfood establishments, grocery stores and convenience stores. The items are then delivered to partner organizations for distribution in Coatesville, Philadelphia and Wilmington, Del., among other areas. “We distribute 2,500 pounds of food a week. We literally feed thousands of people in the

greater Philadelphia area every single week,” said Gudgeon. The community is invited to help the church with its food ministry. People may donate canned food at any time by placing donations in the waterproof food collection bin located outside the church. Items that the food bank is especially in need of include soup, canned fruit and vegetables, peanut butter and jelly. The church is in need of volunteer drivers to pick up and deliver food. A driver’s license and a clean driving record are required. Volunteers are also being sought to help with the distribution at the Melton Center on Thursday nights. Trinity AG is located at 1022 Pottstown Pike, West Chester. For more information, including volunteer opportunities, readers may contact Gudgeon at 610692-1897 or calebgudgeon@ trinityag.org. Those in need of food are also asked to contact Gudgeon. More information about the church is available at www.trinity ag.org or www.facebook.com/ TrinityAGWC.

In 2017, CrossNet Ministries of New Holland asked area residents to donate new or gently used coats for its winter coat drive, and the community responded. “Last year, we gave away approximately 140 coats to children from infants through seniors in high school,” said CrossNet office manager Lisa Kerstetter. This year, looking to repeat the success of that endeavor, CrossNet will be accepting coats, hats, scarves, and gloves at its offices at 123 W. Franklin St., New Holland, through Thursday, Oct. 4. Donors who bring a brand-new coat to contribute to the drive will be entered to win a $50 gift card. The gift card drawing will be held following the end of the drive. CrossNet will hold its annual coat giveaway at the CrossNet Youth Center, 127 W. Franklin St., New Holland, on Monday, Oct. 8, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. In August, CrossNet gave away hundreds of backpacks

Canine Partners for Life (CPL) will hold its annual open house on Saturday, Sept. 15, from noon to 4 p.m. at the CPL facility, 334 Faggs Manor Road, Cochranville. The familyfriendly event will feature an afternoon of free fun and opportunities to discover how service dogs change lives. This year, the event will kick off with a “ribbon-tugging” ceremony for the grand opening of the new Marian S. Ware Program Services Center. The ceremony will begin promptly at 12:30 p.m. and will feature one of the service dogs in training. After the ceremony, visitors can tour the new building to see where puppies are whelped, check out the brand-new and significantly larger harness shop where service dog harnesses are constructed, and view the many upgrades that make the building more accessible and comfortable for the individuals served by CPL. Other activities will include a puppy kissing booth, service dog demonstrations, tours of the kennel, cow bingo, and live music. Attendees may shop from local vendors and purchase food from local food trucks. The event will be held rain or shine. Personal pets are not permitted. To learn more, readers may visit www.k94life.org or www.facebook.com/ CaninePartnersforLife. All event proceeds will benefit CPL’s mission. David Kim Performance To Benefit “Messiah” Sing-Along By Ann Mead Ash

When violinist David Kim performs at the Calvin and Janet High Fine Art Center at Lancaster Mennonite School, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Tuesday, Sept. 18, at 7:30 p.m., the event will benefit another musical presentation - the “Messiah” Sing-Along - which has been held each spring and winter in Lancaster and Chester counties for more than 20 years. The “Messiah” Sing-Along is a musical event that includes no rehearsals and features volunteer singers and musicians. According to conductor Clair Leaman, the event is unique because people can just show up and sing. The piece is treated as a performance, but Leaman noted that sometimes people in the au-

dience sing along too. The Lancaster County Sing-Along has been held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster. The Chester County presentation has been held at Upper Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1121 Octorara Trail, Parkesburg. The next Chester County Sing-Along will be held on Friday, Dec. 28, and the next Lancaster County SingAlong will be held on Friday, April 26, 2019. Kim, who was named concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1999, has been playing the violin since age 3. He began studying under Dorothy DeLay at the age of 8, and he holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Juilliard School. He recently appeared as concertmaster of the All-Star Orchestra on the Public Broadcasting System,

St. Paul’s UCC Posts Class Series St. Paul’s United Church of Christ (UCC) of Birdsboro will sponsor a Creative Contemplatives class series. Individuals are welcome to participate in as many sessions as they wish. The purpose of Creative Contemplatives is to provide a safe venue where participants may engage in contemplative practices and conversations that may lead

them to connect with the divine on a deeper level while also fostering connecting with each other. The instructors will be Pat Babel, spiritual director; Janeen Adil, minister of Christian spirituality and spiritual director; and, in December, Dawnita Smith, art teacher and art therapist. The first class will be held on Monday, Sept. 17; the topic will be “Holy Listening.” For more information, readers may search for St Pauls Birdsboro UCC on Facebook or call the church at 610-582-8461 or Babel at 484-366-6700.

at the Brahms Festival, and with the Fairbanks Symphony in Alaska. He is soloist each season with the Philadelphia Orchestra. As a teacher, Kim is founder and artistic director of the annual David Kim Orchestral Institute of Cairn University of Philadelphia. He also serves as professor of violin studies at Cairn. Kim lives near Philadelphia. Readers may learn more about him at www.davidkimviolin.com. About a year ago, Leaman was
