Apples and more

While apple dishes like pies, dumplings and fritters will be the stars of the annual Hay Creek Apple Festival, the event will also feature other attractions, including a craft and flea market, children’s activities and tours of the site’s historic buildings.

The Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (HCVHA) will present the Apple Festival on Saturday, Oct. 7, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 8, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Historic Joanna Furnace, 1250 Furnace Road, Geigertown.

According to Mark Zerr, HCVHA executive director, the Apple Festival has been a fall tradition in Berks County for 45 years. “Our Apple Festival is an all-time classic. It’s a great, family-fun event,” he said. “Families can come and enjoy the nice fall weather; take in some of our family-friendly activities, like hayrides, pumpkin painting and

Local veteran recognized by Blankets of Honor

Blankets of Honor is a nonprofit organization that was formed to honor veterans, first responders and others by presenting them with a fleece blanket as a lasting gift to recognize them for their service or accomplishments.

The most recent Blankets of Honor recipient is Daniel Hiltebeitel, who was presented his blanket during a ceremony held on Harmony Day,

Sept. 16, at The Long Way Home Grill & Pub in Honey Brook. Hiltebeitel, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1972 to 1975, where he was a platoon commander, was nominated for the honor by Jim Mimm, a fellow Honey Brook Lions Club member. The presentation, which was a complete surprise to Hiltebeitel, was led by Manny Acuna, CEO of Blankets of Honor.

the historic Joanna Furnace Mule Stable. Also available throughout the weekend will be apple crisp, homemade caramel apples with various toppings, hot mulled cider and freshly pressed cider. “People love watching our cider being pressed,” said Zerr. “October is a much better time to purchase apple cider because the apples are sweeter.”

Also featured will be Mabel’s

Iron-Kettle Soups, cooked over actual open fires. Susan and Leonard McMullen of Morgantown will oversee the soup-making in honor of Susan’s mother, Mabel, who started making the soup 45 years ago.

Other Apple Festival foods will include chicken potpie, pulled pork sandwiches, baked peppers filled with hamburger and rice, macaroni and cheese, hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries and sausage sandwiches.

A limited number of corn pies will be sold on-site. “(To make the corn pie), we cut the corn off the cob and (mix it) with potatoes, bacon, seasonings, a little milk and hardboiled egg, and it’s made in a crust,” Zerr explained. “We bake it and serve it hot.”

After a three-year absence, the apple dessert contest will return on Oct. 7. Participants should bring their entries, including pies, cakes, breads and muffins and desserts, to

The Woman’s Club of Birdsboro will present its 25th annual car show rain or shine on Sunday, Oct. 1, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Daniel Boone Area High School, 501 Chestnut St. (Route 345), Birdsboro. All makes and models of vehicles are welcome, and admission for spectators is free.

Registration will be held from 8 to 10:30 a.m.; all vehicles must be in the show lot by 11 a.m. Dash plaques will be awarded to the first

200 registered cars. There will also be six cash drawings - three for preregistered vehicles and three for day-of-show registrants. Winners will be chosen through a random drawing. Vehicle owners are also eligible to win Sponsor’s Choice Awards. New this year is a Best of Show award that will be given to the car club that brings the most vehicles to display.

“If we have a day (of good weather), we will easily get 300 cars,” said Suzanne Lander, club president. “The Skyline Drive Corvette Club will bring See Car show pg 5

Blankets of Honor

Acuna stated, “(Blankets of Honor is) a veterans organization that lets you know that you are truly not forgotten. We are here to thank you for your service and your commitment and your outstanding sacrifice and your love of country.”

Acuna offered an opening prayer and then provided a brief biography of Hiltebeitel, including his accomplishments.

Hiltebeitel graduated from Downingtown High School and West Chester University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in health and physical education. He also earned a master’s degree from Temple University in vocational education. He was a masonry instructor at the Center for Arts and Technology, Brandywine Campus, Coatesville.

Shoes & Boots For The Whole Family

Through the years, Hiltebeitel has coached baseball, softball, wrestling, soccer and football and was a Boy Scout leader. He is a member of American Legion Post 422 of Honey Brook, where he is color guard captain.

“He consistently executed a meaningful impact on students and athletes, who were inspired by his outstanding example,” said Acuna. “He was loved by all his Marines and students alike, respected and admired by all.”

Hiltebeitel was then wrapped in the blanket by his son, Dan, and daughter Carrie-Anne Haag and was also

presented with a challenge coin, a framed certificate and information about Blankets of Honor, which also seeks to help veterans in need.

Hiltebeitel thanked all those in attendance, saying he was very surprised at the honor. He thought he was attending lunch with his family members, including his wife, Joy. “My lovely bride is usually chilly,” he stated. “I’m sure she will make good use of the blanket.”

Dave Chobanoff, chief operations officer for Blankets of Honor, reported that 330 blankets have been given out since the organization formed in 2020. “Anyone can go on our website, and there is a form to fill out to nominate someone,” he said. “Part of what we do is (present the blanket) as a surprise, so we get the emotion. They are fleece queen-size blankets, and (they depict) the branch of service (the veteran served in). We also (give blankets) to first responders and supporters of veterans.” He added that World War II veterans are given priority to receive blankets due to age and health concerns.

Women invited to join Neighbors group

The Neighbors group recently began its 37th year of offering a time of Christian fellowship for women during gatherings held at Conestoga Mennonite Church, 2779 Main St., Morgantown.

The year opened with a “Welcome Back Brunch” on Sept. 19, and the next scheduled meeting will be on Oct. 3 featuring speaker Liz Betz, who will present “Daring To Be Unique in Our Image-Driven World.”

Instead of meeting weekly as it has in years past, the Neighbors group will meet on the first, third and fifth Tuesdays of the month from September through May. The change was made to accommodate Conestoga Cubs, the church’s ministry for mothers of young children, which meets on the second Tuesday of the month.

“The second Tuesday is focused on women who have young children at home. They do an activity with

quite a few Corvettes, and there will be an antique fire truck.” As club president, Lander is responsible for choosing one car, the likeness of which will be featured on next year’s dash plaque.

The vehicles will be located in the back parking lot at the school, and vehicle owners will be with their cars to answer questions. A DJ will provide music throughout the day.

Food will be offered for sale, including pizza by a local vendor. “We will have chicken noodle soup and chili and baked goods,” Lander said, noting all items are homemade. “There will also be a cake walk.”

A Chinese auction will take place. Prizes will include gift baskets, mums and restaurant gift cards.

Washington streets, Birdsboro. New members are always welcome, and membership is not limited to residents of Birdsboro.

Lander noted that despite inclement weather, last year’s car show was a success.

“Last year there was a hurricane, but our dedicated (supporters) still came out - most without their cars,” she said. “They put up a canopy and sat in chairs in the pouring rain and ate food and (took part in the auction). It was amazing that anyone came at all. ... We still (raised funds) because our fans came out to support us.”

Neighbors Group

their children and have fun together,” said Tina Essick, the program chair for Neighbors. “Some of the mothers who go to Cubs also go to Neighbors.”

Each Neighbors meeting begins with refreshments and a prayer time, followed by a guest speaker. Child care is provided for infants through kindergarten-age children. While their moms are at the meeting, children enjoy stories, crafts and age-appropriate activities. Snacks are provided.

All programs and child care are offered free of charge, but donations are welcome. When a craft is the focus of the meeting, registration is required and a nominal fee is charged to cover the cost of supplies.

In addition to Betz, new Neighbors speakers this year include John Beitler, who will present “Enhancing the Joy of Birding in Your Backyard and Beyond” on Oct. 31.

“The felted soap craft led by Sue Sutter on Nov. 7 is also new,” Essick noted. “She has led us in previous crafts, and it has always been fun.”

A program about COBYS Family Services will be presented on Dec. 5 by speaker Anne Stokes. “COBYS is an organization that helps children find a home,” said Essick. “We are going to learn more about what they do.” She added that a freewill offering will be received for COBYS following the talk.

Also new is “Soup’s On!” on Jan. 16, 2024, where attendees will sample soups and share recipes.

The group also takes part in community service projects. On March 5, 2024, the ladies will knot comforters for the Mennonite Central Committee. The blankets are distributed worldwide to people in need. On April 2, 2024, members will take part in a service day with Anchored Ministries, an Elversonbased charity.

“Painting With a Twist” will be offered on April 16, 2024, by Michelle Glick. “Michelle attends our group and does a lot of artistic work for Glick’s Greenhouse in the Oley area,” Essick noted. “She is an artist and will teach us. No matter what your gift level is, it will still be fun.”

For more information about Neighbors, call the church office at 610-286-9124 or visit www .conestogamennonitechurch.org/ ministries and look for “Neighbors.” The webpage offers a link to join the Neighbors Facebook group. In addition to Essick, members of the activities committee are Norma Denlinger, Kristy Unruh and Madison Petersheim.
