Cruise to the Forge to feature car show, live music and food
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Historic Poole Forge will present Cruise to the Forge, the site’s annual car, truck and bike show, on Sunday, Oct. 15, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. In addition to the display of vehicles of all makes and models, the event will include food, live music, a silent auction and a craft show. The site’s mansion will also be open for self-guided tours.
Vehicle owners will be asked to pay a registration fee. Spectators will be admitted free of charge.
A highlight of the day is when vehicles enter the car show and drive over the site’s covered bridge, which crosses the Conestoga River. A professional photographer will take photos, which will be available for purchase.
“Last year, we had over 100 vehicles,” said Dawn Ekdahl, Poole Forge executive director, noting that local car clubs also participate.
Judging for the top five cars will be at 2:30 p.m. The prizes will be framed prints of the covered bridge. “We don’t do categories; we just have the top five cars,” Ekdahl explained. “A lot the car enthusiasts love to come into Poole Forge because it’s not (limited) to a parking lot. With us, we have beautiful backdrops with the fall trees. Photo opportunities are endless.”
The silent auction items have been donated by local businesses. “We will have gift baskets, including a car wash gift basket,” Ekdahl said, noting that the silent auction will close at 2 p.m.
DJ Jay Matteson will provide music, and there will be a performance by the band Forgiven, which is appearing at the event for the first time. The band will perform on the mansion porch. “They play oldies, contemporary, rock and jazz,” Ekdahl said, adding that
members of the band will also show their cars, including a 1933 Studebaker St. Regis.
Coffee and hot food, including french fries, will be for sale by Schaeffer Catering from Reading.
“They are known for their specialty grilled cheese sandwiches,” Ekdahl noted. “We also have Suzi’s Homemade Soups. She (will offer) smoked chicken corn chowder.”
Locally made baked goods, including a variety of homemade pies, will also be for sale.
Visitors are welcome to stroll the gardens and grounds, and children may enjoy the site’s playground.
Historic Poole Forge is located at 1940 Main St., Narvon, along Route 23, 7 miles east of New Holland and 5 miles west of Morgantown. For more information about Cruise to the Forge, call 484-797-5302, email hpf1940@gmail.com or visit www.historicpooleforge.org or www.facebook.com/pooleforge.

of the church will be available for all attendees to take home. The book was created by the church’s historical committee.
According to www.honey brookmethodist.org, the current church building, located at the corner of Maple Street and Route 322 in Honey Brook, was built in 1843. Prior to that, the church worshipped in a building several blocks away on Chestnut Street after being originally planted through the efforts of a Methodist circuit rider. At that time, the church was known as Honey Brook Methodist Episcopal Church before it became a member of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church.
“We are very happy to have been able to proclaim the
Good News of the Gospel and to serve the community of Honey Brook since 1823,” Voran stated.
The church began the celebration of its bicentennial with a Peach Festival held this past summer. On Harmony Day, Sept. 16, a historical display was on exhibit at the church, which also offered yard sales, free snacks, a kids’ art show, face painting and a performance by guitarist Paul Columbo. On Sept. 24, there was an afternoon of special music featuring selections on the church’s pipe organ and piano along with congregational hymns and additional special music.
The church holds a traditional Sunday worship service at 10:15 a.m. Services are also livestreamed on Facebook. Sunday school for people of all ages is held from 8:30 to
10:30 a.m. A Bible study is held on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month at 2:30 p.m. Since Voran also serves as the pastor of New Holland UMC, the churches frequently partner
for activities such as combined worship services. For additional information about the church, visit the previously mentioned website or search for “Honey Brook UMC” on Facebook.

According to a history of the church compiled by Swisher, St. Paul’s UMC began in 1773 as the Old Forest Church, which was led by the Rev. William Demour. Demour and his congregation built the first small church building at the present site on
land owned by the Swedish settler Mouns Jones.
After Demour’s death in 1776, the congregation struggled. Bishop Francis Asbury, one of the founders of Methodism in America, traveled from Philadelphia to encourage the struggling congregation in 1799. The congregation prospered and built the present church building on May 26, 1858, when the name was changed to St. Paul’s.

Three local homeschoolers, Shayle Bigman, Harlan Taylor and Emilio Taylor, recently participated in a worldwide effort to advocate ending the use of fossil fuels. The students made posters and hung them along a fence line on Furnace Road in Geigertown
on Sept. 16.
Shayle, Harlan and Emilio’s signs included messages regarding the pollution caused by fossil fuels and plastic bags. The students encouraged members of the public to use reusable shopping bags to help combat climate change.
The Fund for Women and Girls recently announced the awardees for its seventh annual Champions of Change Breakfast, which will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 25, from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at The Farmhouse at People’s Light, 29 Conestoga Road, Malvern.
The Champion of Change Breakfast recognizes individuals and organizations committed to women’s economic advancement and equity in the workplace, nominated by members of their community.
The Gladys Black “Woman of Distinction” awardee is Susan Fiorentino, Esq., who has dedicated her career to the safety and education of women and girls. Her research focuses on legal issues relevant to women in the workplace, including pay equity and sexual harassment. In addition to her work as a lawyer and researcher, Fiorentino is a speaker, a volunteer and a professor at West Chester University. The award is named for longtime Fund supporter Gladys Black.
The Champions of Change Corporate awardee is Countryside Consulting Inc. Under the leadership of
founder and president Louise Schorn Smith, the company has implemented flexible scheduling and other family-friendly policies.
New this year, The Fund has introduced an award focused on a nonprofit workforce development agency and has partnered with the WSFS Cares Foundation to sponsor this award. The winner of the WSFS Nonprofit Workforce Development Award will be presented with a $1,000 grant by The Fund for Women and Girls, recognizing the agency’s work in breaking down barriers to employment and economic achievement.
The WSFS Nonprofit Workforce Development awardee is Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (CCOIC). CCIOIC has demonstrated its dedication to supporting women from diverse communities, paving the way for sustainable employment and financial independence. Most of the women participating in CCOIC’s programs have experienced poverty, justice involvement or domestic violence. Led by Joyce Chester, CCOIC provides training, education and supportive services like child care, workforce clothing and toiletries, driver’s education, expungement services, personal mentorship and professional coaching.
The Fund invites the public to celebrate and honor the awardees at the Champions of Change Breakfast. For more information about the event and to secure a spot, visit www.thefundcc.org.

The Chester County Sheriff’s Office has warned residents about phone scams involving false fines for failure to report to jury duty or other court appointments.
The Sheriff’s Office has received numerous calls noting that the fraudulent calls seeking money are very convincing. For some, the caller ID shows Chester County Sheriff’s Office.
In addition, scammers may
use the name of a current Chester County judge and names of current or former sheriff deputies. Fraudsters may demand gift cards or urgent special bank transfers, claiming that the recipient was required to show up for jury duty, a meeting or a conference. Callers deliver ultimatums, including imminent arrest or loss of property for lack of immediate payment.
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2023
One individual lost $5,000 by responding to a false claim of missing a bail conference. Chester County detectives are investigating.
The Chester County Sheriff’s Office will never call and request immediate gift card payments or cash transfers for missing jury duty or other sim-
ilar fines. If someone receives such a request by phone, he or she should hang up. If a community member is unsure about the legitimacy of a call requesting immediate payment or fine, he or she should call local law enforcement or the Chester County Sheriff’s Office at 610-344-6850.
