SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

Ceremony to commemorate Veterans Day

VOL XXXI • NO 39

Take a hike with the Berks Community Strollers BY FRANCINE FULTON

BY FRANCINE FULTON

With the autumn season winding down, there is still a chance to see fall foliage by joining the Berks Community Strollers on one of the group’s weekly outings. Participants can expect to enjoy low-impact hikes that allow them to explore scenic locations throughout the region. According to Emma Shealer, president, the Strollers group is an offshoot of the Berks Community Hiking Club; it offers an option to those interested in more of a leisurely stroll rather than a fast-paced hike. “We are predominantly a senior

he community is invited to a Veterans Day ceremony that will take place on Sunday, Nov. 5, beginning at 2 p.m. at Tel Hai Retirement Community. The event, which will include patriotic music, guest presentations and the honoring of local veterans, will be held in Tel Hai’s Stonecroft Center for the Performing Arts, 4000 Treeline Drive, Honey Brook. The annual Veterans Day program is a joint effort between Tel Hai,

group, but not limited to (seniors),” said Shealer. “We are open to everyone. Periodically, we have people who bring their grandchildren.” Each hike is generally held on a trail or path and lasts for about two hours. “It’s about a two-hour walk - an hour in and an hour out depending on our clip and how much we (stop to) see plants, birds and trees,” Shealer said, noting that at the club’s most recent outing at Wyomissing Creek Park, attendees were excited to see a blue heron. “It is between 2 and 4 miles. It’s a slow pace. We look for paths that are flat and have bathrooms close by.” Each walk is followed by an See Berks Strollers pg 8

Honey Brook Borough and Honey Brook Township. The planning committee includes Tim Herr, Tel Hai chaplain, along with members of the Tel Hai Veterans Group, Honey Brook Township supervisor John McHugh and Honey Brook Borough Council members Rich Florio and Jeanne Jenzano. This year’s musical entertainment will be provided by the 49ers Chorus. “They will do all patriotic songs,” Jenzano explained. “They will also do a medley of all the theme songs from each branch of the service. The musical part of the program adds an emotional level to (the event).”

David Turner Sr., shown with cases of shampoo and body wash that were recently donated by David’s Drive 831 to the Coatesville VA, will be the guest speaker.

Also in attendance will be Rep. Dan Williams, a member of the Veterans Affairs & Emergency Preparedness committee. “He will talk briefly about some of the legislation and some of the things happening at that level for veterans,” said Jenzano. The guest speaker will be David Turner Sr., founder and president of David’s Drive 831 (DD831), who will attend with his wife, Joy. DD831 is named for David Turner Jr., who was employed at the Coatesville

Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center when he passed away at the age of 20 in December 2009. His family members started the all-volunteer DD831 charity to benefit veterans by providing much-needed goods and services. The 831 symbolizes the phrase “I love you,” because the phrase contains eight letters in three words that have one meaning. Among its many efforts, DD831 collects underwear and socks and other necessities for veterans and donates beds and other supplies to previously homeless veterans who are moving into transitional housing. During Veterans’ Week activities at the VA, DD831 is sponsoring a variety of events, including Super Bingo. There will also be a program presented about the American flag by Tel Hai veteran Rich Toscano. “He is going to do a whole presentation about the flag - the symbolism of the flag and how to

Pet rescue sets open house BY FRANCINE FULTON

Those interested in volunteering with Pawsitive Hearts Pet Therapy and Rescue Inc. or adopting a new cat or kitten are invited to attend an open house on Saturday, Nov. 4, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Kenhorst Fire Company, 303 S. Kenhorst Blvd., Kenhorst. The event will include vendors and snacks, face painting for children and a chance to win prizes. The first 150 attendees will get a free coupon for a hot beverage from Wawa. Founded in 2020, Pawsitive Hearts Pet Therapy and Rescue is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization

that focuses on rescuing pets in need of homes and providing animalassisted therapy. Volunteers with the organization, as well as Kathy Iglar, Pawsitive Hearts executive director, will be on hand to answer questions about the organization at the open house. “We invite people to come and learn what we do and why,” said Iglar. There will be some adoptable kittens on hand, including Drew, a 7-month-old female, and Red, a 7-month-old male. “All kitties available for adoption have been spayed or neutered, individually tested for feline leukemia and feline AIDS, are microchipped and have

The program will conclude with the honoring of local veterans. “Rich will read a bio of our veterans from the borough, and John will read the bios from the veterans from the township and they all will receive a plaque,” said Jenzano, noting that select Tel Hai veterans will also be recognized. “It’s not just their military service we are honoring. We are honoring their contributions to their community.”

Members of Boy Scout Troop 9 of Honey Brook, led by Scoutmaster Cory Short, will present the colors and lead attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance. “They will also help with handing out programs as people walk in,” noted Jenzano. Jenzano pointed out that McHugh, a Marine Corps veteran, started the Veterans Day event at the Honey Brook Township Building. “We try to make (the ceremony) special, and everyone is invited to attend,” she added.

explained Shealer. The hike leaders also write a summary of each hike on the group’s Facebook page, which is accompanied by photos. This allows members who are no longer able to participate in the hikes to learn about the outings. “There are people who still pay dues because they don’t want to lose the connection,” said Shealer, noting that the club currently has more than 80 members. “To keep them engaged, we write summaries of every hike, and they love reading it. They come to our summer picnic, Christmas lunch and go on our trip.” The next scheduled Berks Strollers hike will be on Saturday, Nov. 4, when the group will explore

Registered members take part in an annual summer hike and picnic, a Christmas hike and luncheon and a yearly overnight trip. Members receive the schedule of hikes, which are also listed in the Community Calendar section of the Community Courier. “When we start out a quarter, we get a hike coordinator, and that hike coordinator looks for people to be hike leaders. That hike leader has to know the area and know the trail before they bring us onto it,”

The Chester County commissioners and Chester County Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced their support for Operation Green Light. Set to occur from Monday, Nov. 6, to Sunday, Nov. 12, this nationwide initiative will recognize veterans. As part of the efforts, the county will present a commissioners’ proclamation and illuminate the façade of the Chester County Historic Courthouse in green. The County encourages residents to shine a green light bulb from Nov. 6 to 12 to honor veterans and their families. To help with the effort, Chester County VA is giving away green light bulbs while supplies last to county residents. The Veterans Affairs Medical
