Christian schools in Lancaster County have never really been competitors. Now they’re working together to align their missions and streamline their efforts. The upcoming Christian Education Fair is an event that’s designed to draw strength from numbers, explore and promote the increasing popularity of Christian education and provide families with learning opportunities that are aligned with their beliefs and their children’s needs. “It’s not that we were against each other; it’s we weren’t working together,” said Jill Armstrong, Lancaster County Christian School’s events and communication coordinator and one of the organizers of the event. “I just think there wasn’t an intentional collaboration. We can learn from each other. We can grow in different ways as we collaborate. We’re trying to find ways to work as one.” T he inaugural Christian Education Fair will be staged from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 12, at Lancaster Bible College’s Good Shepherd Chapel, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster. ood is sustenance and nourishment for the body, mind and soul. That makes the volunteers, staff members and administrators of Meals on Wheels of Lancaster purveyors of empathy and angels of mercy. Meals on Wheels of Lancaster’s mission of providing food to people in need is as important now as it’s ever been. “I don’t know if we necessarily understand the full value of food,” said Feleen Nancarvis, who’s been the organization’s executive director for four years. “I don’t think we know how similar we are to the people we serve and how close we are to being in their circumstances. We’re all just as likely as the next to need additional support. There are times we need other people in our community to lean on. We all have to take care of each other, and we all have to take care of ourselves.” Meals on W heels operates two commercial kitchens at its 1411 Columbia Ave., Lancaster, location. From there, with the help of caring volunteers and dedicated staff members, the organization distributes and delivers 900 meals to 450 clients residing mostly in the city and New Holland. Christian schools in Lancaster County - Anchor Christian Academy, Dayspring Christian Academy, Hinkletown Mennonite School, Kraybill Mennonite School, L ancaster County Christian School, Lancaster Mennonite School, Linville Hill Christian School, Lititz Area Mennonite School, Lititz Christian School, Mainstay Christian Academy, Mount Calvary Christian School and Veritas Academy - will be on hand to provide information and answer questions. Many of the Christian schools that will be represented are nondenominational private institutions designed for students in prekindergarten through grade 12. The Christian Education Fair will inform visitors about the schools’ curriculum, athletics, arts, extracurricular activities, transportation, tuition, financial aid and enrollment processes. “I hope that it’s unifying and energizing,” said Armstrong of the education fair’s atmosphere. “I hope that it’s upbeat and there’s lively conversation. people to ask questions. I hope there’s kind of like a family feel.” T he event is fre e to attend, everyone is welcome and no registration is required. “There are a lot of options out there, and it can be overwhelming,” said Armstrong. “I think there are families asking themselves, ‘Do I do Christian schools? Do I do public schools? Do I do homeschooling?’ I think you’ll see families with new kindergarten-age children. I think you’ll see parents of students who are experiencing natural transitions, from elementary school to middle school, from middle school to high school. There’s no pressure, no commitment; just come and learn.”
Organizers of the Christian Education Fair sent out event invitations to 18 Christian schools in Lancaster County to participate. “Enrollment in Christian schools is growing rapidly,” said Armstrong. “I think we offer something different that families are attracted to. Most Christian schools are places of community. We want to showcase our u n i q u e n e s s . B u t w h at might be right for one family might not be right for another. We’re kind of on a mission together. I think all of the Christian schools would say similar things.” Christian schools offer just one type of private education available to L ancaster County students. The origins of local
Christian schools date back to the early 1900s, and their growth seems to be associated with periods of time when some became nondenominational. “I think we are really privileged to live in a part of the world that has so many Christian schools,” said Armstrong. “I think the county has a lot of histor y of prioritizing Christian education, just by the number of Christian schools that there are. Over the years, I’ve watched schools better articulate their missions. Christian education emphasizes a biblical worldview and studying the Word of God.” For additional information about the Christian E d uc at i o n Fa i r, g o to https://christianedfair.com.

Meals on Wheels from pg 1 of an entrée, a starch, a vegetable and a dessert and a bagged lunch, which includes a sandwich or salad, along with fruit, juice and milk. “Each day is an adventure here,” said Nancarvis. “There’s a lot going on. We’ve got to get meals out the doors on time. It’s been a wild ride, especially the last couple of years. It’s a fun puzzle, but we enjoy it. Once you put all the pieces together, it’s very eye-opening.” It takes the collaborative efforts of 70 daily volunteers - 25 in the kitchen and 45 delivery drivers - to get the meals to their destinations. Meals on Wheels owns and operates three cargo vans, but much of the delivery is performed by the volunteers in their own vehicles. “Many people see it as a donation of time and gas money,” said Nancarvis. “Without the community rallying around our cause and mission, we wouldn’t be able to meet the needs of
our clients. It’s good food. There’s no shame in having good food delivered to your home.” Many of the organization’s clients fall into three general categories: seniors or residents with disabilities; individuals who need meals temporarily or for short-term reasons; and caregivers. Some meals are provided to clients through care organizations or at reduced costs based on their abilities to pay. “Food insecurity is often a symptom of other issues,” said Nancar vis. “ T he y might be people with limited mobility, or maybe they can’t drive. They might not be able to lift groceries. We’re here for them.” Meals on Wheels of Lancaster was formed in 1967 through the collaboration of a number of local service organizations. Prior to the pandemic, the organization was serving 260 local residents. For additional information, go to www.mealson wheelsoflancaster.org.

The Newsweek ranking, compiled through surveys of industry professionals, residents, and family members, showcases retirement communities that excel in quality, amenities, and overall satisfaction. Landis Homes was given high marks for its compassionate team and its focus on creating a welcoming environment for residents to live life to the fullest. More information about
the awards can be found at www.newsweek.com/rank ings/americas-best -contining-care-retirement -communities-2025. In addition, Landis Homes was recognized as a Best Nursing Home for 2025 by U.S. News & World Report. Since 2009, U.S. News’ annual Best Nursing Homes ratings have sought to assist American families in need of either short-term rehabilitation or long-term care for themselves or a loved one. Landis Homes earned its Best Nursing Home status by achieving a rating of High Performing, the highest possible rating, for both shortterm rehabilitation and
long-term care. U.S. News gives the designation of Best Nursing Home only to those that satisfy U.S. News’ proprietary assessment of consistent performance in quality measures. To calculate the 2025 ratings, U.S. News evaluated nearly 15,000 nursing homes using a variety of quality measures obtained from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Both short- and long-term ratings included data on nurse staffing; use of antipsychotic drugs, intended to identify potentially inappropriate reliance on these substances; and success in preventing emergency
room and hospital visits. The long-term care rating also included measures of whether a home changed ownership and how well it was staffed on weekends.
