Sing for the Moment Choir focuses on here and now
BY JEFF FALK
Singing has a way of centering you, of washing away worries, of making time stand still. Singing has the power to both spark memories and render them irrelevant all at the same time.
Landis Homes’ Sing for the Moment Choir can’t cure dementia disorders like Alzheimer’s disease or Parkinson’s disease. But it can help to manage symptoms and make life a little more normal.
“Music just does so much for folks,” said Regina Cabezas, Sing for the Moment Choir’s coordinator. “It touches (some people) in a place they can’t speak about anymore. We know that the part of the brain that’s associated with singing and music stays intact for a very long time. (Singing) doesn’t change their situations. They might not even remember
that moment. But parts of the mind are being stirred for a while. They’re singing for that enjoyment.”

The hourlong practices will be conducted each successive
Wednesday through April 23 in preparation for Sing for the Moment Choir’s spring performance at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 27, also at the retirement village’s West Bethany Chapel. Participation in the choir is open to everyone and not limited to Landis Homes residents.
Registration is not required but encouraged through email at sftm@landis.org or by calling 717-381-3599.
“We talk about socializing,” said Cabezas. “It’s a place where (the singers) can feel very comfortable. They are just there. Lots of hugs, lots of smiles. It feels safe. They’re having a great time. It’s their space, but we can be in it.”

It’s been said that getting older is a privilege and an honor; that it sure does beat the alternative.
At the Lititz Senior Center, regular and semi-regular visitors seek to age gracefully, proactively, healthily - and together.
“Our mission is to create family,” said Lucy Weaver, who’s been the Lititz Senior Center’s manager for 13 years. “My goal is for people to come here and feel like family. I think isolation is a disease. Just being able to
shine is important. I’m not sure what it would look like if these people were home alone without human contact. We all need each other.”
Located in the Lititz United Methodist Church’s social hall at 201 E. Market St., the Lititz Senior Center is supported by the Lancaster County Office of Aging and staffed by Ephrata Area Rehab Services (EARS). The Lititz Senior Center is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and the program is

States. The soon-to-be-famous M.T. Parker will be making his only appearance of the year at the Manheim Township Recreation and Park Planning (MTRPP) Department’s upcoming Groundhog Day Celebration.
INTERVIEWS
“This started back in Germany with badgers,” said Harry Norton, MTRPP’s adult and family program manager who’s been employed by the township for 38 years. “When the Germans immigrated, there weren’t badgers here, so they selected groundhogs. But when you get right down to it, I’m not sure (groundhogs are) all that great (at predicting the coming of spring). M.T. Parker is four for four. But not all groundhogs are that accurate.”
You too can witness M.T. Parker’s prodigious prognosticating prowess at MTRPP’s Groundhog Day Celebration, Sunday, Feb. 2 - the calendar’s midway point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox - at the Carriage House at Stauffer Mansion, 1241 Lititz Pike, Lancaster. M.T. Parker, a lifelike plush toy, is expected to emerge from his wooden home carved from a fallen Manheim Township tree around 7 a.m., then, precisely 21 minutes later - as the sun rises in the east - predict whether or not the locale is destined for an early spring.
Last year at the Groundhog Day Celebration, M.T. Parker saw his shadow and forecasted six more weeks of winter.
MTRPP’s Groundhog Day Celebration, which is expected to last 75 minutes, is a free, family-ori -
“When you first get here it’s dark and cold, but we do have lights strung up,” said Norton, who will read aloud M.T. Parker’s proclamation. “Around 7:12 (a.m.) we ring our bell and introduce M.T. Parker. We open the spring door of where he resides, and we go from there. I don’t know what he does when spring does eventually come. I guess he goes somewhere in one of our parks. All I know is that every year when we open the door, he’s there.”
In addition to M.T. Parker’s appearance, the Groundhog Day Celebration will feature arts and crafts; face painting; light refreshments like hot chocolate, coffee, mini bagels and cream cheese, and ingredients to make smores; portable fire places; photo opportunities; and live music from an accordionist.
“It’s just a fun way to get folks out to enjoy the weather and camaraderie in winter,” said Norton. “When you get a group of people together, it’s a big social event. The atmosphere is one of excitement to see what the prognostication is going to be. There’s either a big cheer or a collective groan. I encourage everyone to take advantage of this opportunity to enjoy a sunrise and interact with your neighbors. Maybe you’ll get blasted by a snow cannon with polka music playing in the background.”
During the event, attendees will be afforded an opportunity to vote on their preferences - a longer winter or an early spring.
“I actually prefer winter,” said Norton. “I enjoy Pennsylvania, and I enjoy the four seasons. But when it’s cold like this, I’m open to having an early spring if possible.”
The Groundhog Day Celebration is one of four major events sponsored by MTRPP annually. This year, MTRPP will conduct its Community Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 12, from 1 to 3 p.m., at the Manheim Township Athletic Complex, 28823 Weaver Road, Lancaster.

communities and their caregivers. Many of the songs that will be sung are hymns and old love songs.
“It’s also a place for family and friends to get involved with their loved ones,” said Cabezas.
She noted that while medications can help to manage the symptoms of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, these conditions have no cures. Through activities such as the choir, family members, friends and others can focus on making daily lives better for people with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.
“The reality is that the cases of Alzheimer’s and dementia are going to grow because people are living longer,” said Cabezas. “Families are a huge part of this, just knowing their loved ones are being cared for.”
According to the Alzheimer’s Association, more than 280,000 Pennsylvania residents age 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s, or about 11% of the 65-plus population. But there are also many people living with Alzheimer’s who haven’t been diagnosed.
“People get nervous when
they get older and start forgetting things,” said Cabezas. “I tell them not to worry, that we all have memory loss. But if you can’t find your way home or you don’t know how to brush your teeth, you might have dementia. People with dementia might not remember that someone has passed away. We don’t try to bring them back to reality. We go to where they are. As we’ve learned about dementia, we don’t go to what makes sense for us.”
Sing for the Moment Choir was established in 2018 through the cooperation of Landis Homes employee Faith Hoover and the Alzheimer’s Association. Since its inception, the group has performed publicly seven times.
“Just offer (individuals with memory loss) assurance,” said Cabezas. “For families with loved ones with memory loss, just being with someone can be special. They want your time. They want your attention. Make them feel comfortable.”

learn something new. It’s a stressfree place when you walk through the doors. It’s a place where you come to enjoy yourself.”
In addition to a continental breakfast and a balanced lunch, the Lititz Senior Center offers crafts; speakers; dancing; bingo; nutrition and mental health programs; exercise classes, including tai chi and yoga; card games; health screenings; haircuts; and trivia.
“The (lunch) we give is a full
meal, and when some of our seniors go home, they just have a snack,” said Weaver. “They are the ones who used to call their loved ones, but they’re not getting it back like they used to give it. Their energy levels have gone down. They may not be able to drive. The economy has hit them really hard. There are a lot of changes happening, but I think they’re more mental than physical.”
“You have to be independent to get here,” said Weaver. “They’re parents and grandparents and great-grandparents. They’re wonderful people. They’re more than just a name. They are somebody’s somebody. We are spending time with them. Seniors are carrying more than you think they are. Just be kind to them. They are doing everything they can to stay strong. Appreciate them. Acknowledge them.”
The Lititz Senior Center is one of the largest of the nine senior centers located in Lancaster County. Weaver’s work is supported by supervisor Karen Hummel, assistant manager Kathy Ross and office assistant Carolyn Lewis.
While more than 200 older residents visit the Lititz Senior Center on a semi-regular basis, there are usually no more than 70 present at one time. The seniors reside in Lititz, Manheim Township, Ephrata, Akron, Leola, Denver and New Holland. Some live in their own homes, while others reside in retirement communities. Red Rose Transit offers seniors free transportation to and from the Lititz Senior Center.
“Do you know how many times I’ve been called ‘sunshine’?” said Weaver. “Since I’ve worked here, I’ve never had the Monday blues. I get all these hugs, and I’m not a hugger. I always ask myself, ‘How lucky can I be?’ It’s nourishing to my soul every day. It’s the love we share with each other. I think even younger seniors think it’s a cool place to hang out.” For additional information, search for “Lititz Senior Center” on Facebook.

Celebrating Cavod at 20
BY ANN MEAD ASH
At the heart of Cavod Performing Arts is executive director and founder Connie Dienner’s heart for children and young adults. “The arts are a vehicle for kids’ lives to be changed,” said Dienner. “(The goal is) for them to find their identity by taking classes and finding their giftings and their talents.”
On Saturday, Feb. 8, Cavod will celebrate 20 years of existence with an extravaganza called Lifetime Tour at Worship Center, 2384 New Holland Pike, Lancaster, from 2 to 5 p.m. There is no charge to attend, but registration is requested by Wednesday, Feb. 5, by visiting www.cavod.org or calling 717-354-3355.
Guests will receive a passport and a bag upon entry. More than 10 stations will be available in the foyer area. As attendees have their passports stamped at each station, they will receive a gift. “The first station will (represent) the barn where we started on the Welsh Mountain,” said Dienner, who added that the second station will represent the location at 501 E. Main St., in New Holland. “We were there six years,” said Dienner, who noted that Cavod has been at its present location at 665 W. Main St., New Holland for 11 years. Cavod Theatre, which is located at 641 W. Main St., opened nine years ago, and a branch opened in Manheim four years ago. Another station will honor the late Stan Deen, who helped Dienner found Cavod Theatre, and stations will be dedicated to Cavod programs such as the City Light outreach dance teams and Friends in Motion, which offers classes for individuals with disabilities. Another station will feature Ornate, Cavod’s professional dance team, which performs locally and internationally with a trip planned to South Africa and Kenya later this year. There will also be a missions table and a blessings table where students can share the Cavod experiences for which they are thankful and make suggestions

about what Cavod should offer in the future.
Another station will feature Dienner’s book, which will be released that day. The book is called “From Barn to Stage.” “(The title) has a double meaning,” said Dienner, who noted that the book tells both her story of growing up Plain on an Indiana hog farm and the story of the founding of Cavod. “I wasn’t allowed to be in shows, but I would sing to the pigs and dance for the pigs,” recalled Dienner. “That’s how I got my start in the arts.” Dienner’s book, which she wrote with Shawn Smucker, will be available that day by donation.
In addition to the stations, illusionist Jay Stoltzfus will perform in the café, and cake will be available to share.
“When their passport is stamped, it will go into a drawing for gifts such as ear pods, a year of free tuition, or season theater tickets,” said Dienner.
“At 3:30 p.m. we will go into the auditorium for a production,” said Dienner, who noted that Cavod will show a video by MAKE/ FILMS that looks at Cavod’s history and its future. “We will have live testimonies, dance, music, and worship,” said Dienner. “We really want the community to come and experience and see the progression of what God has done over the years,” she added. “(They will) also be able to hear the heart of where we are going. We have just begun.”
