o lay people, the ideas and innerworkings of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) can be complex and foreign.
One Small Step for an Axolotl is a local independent robotics team whose mission is to inform, educate and advocate for the use of science and technology in the community. While they may be difficult to fully comprehend, what’s important to know is that these cutting-edge concepts are indeed important.
“We want people to know that there’s this amazing program called FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) and that kids can explore the exciting worlds of robotics and STEM,” said Janny Kim Lee, One Small Step for an
Axolotl’s coach. “We want people to know how great of a growth opportunity it is. We’re trying to get more kids involved and more girls involved.”
On Jan. 12, One Small Step for an Axolotl, which is made up of four Manheim Township School District students - juniors Isaac Link, Grant Lowther and William Lee and seventh-grader Elizabeth Lee - took top honors at a 30-team robotics event hosted at Manheim Township High School, the Blue Streaks Qualifier Tournament. The team, which bested entries from all over Pennsylvania, designed, built and programmed its own robot; responded to questions from judges about its design; and worked cooperatively with other robotics teams.
One Small Step for an Axolotl’s performance qualified it for the
Pennsylvania FIRST Tech Challenge, which will be contested in Bellefonte on Saturday and Sunday, March 8 and 9.

It has absolutely nothing to do with people lying on their backs in the snow and moving their arms and legs to create impromptu winter weather art. It’s more closely related to kindred spirits performing heavenly work here on Earth.
These are different kinds of Snow Angels.
“Before we had a formal name, the people who we were helping named us,” said Jennifer Jarvis, one of the founding members of the Lancaster Snow Angels.
Janny. “They want to learn and figure things out. They want to make a difference. They have so much in them. They want to get better and better, and they want to help their community get better. They’re giving back already.”
“They said to us, ‘You’re angels. We’re so thankful.’”
The Snow Angels are an independent, community-oriented group of concerned citizens who travel around the Lancaster countryside shoveling and removing snow from the sidewalks, walkways and driveways of the elderly, the disabled and veterans - neighbors who can’t remove snow on their own. It began as a grassroots movement in local neighborhoods, but the altruistic concept has gained traction and has now spread to nearly every corner of the county.
As part of its mission, One Small Step for an Axolotl has donated 350 volunteer hours to promote STEM in the community. Included in the

“Our veterans and elderly shouldn’t have to deal with stress,” said Jarvis. “They have doctor’s appointments, and they have direct-care nurses coming to their homes. If they don’t have families, or don’t have families who live nearby, who’s going to help them?”
That’s where Lancaster Snow Angels come in. Persons in need of snow removal reach out to the Angels through phone calls, email and social media. The response may not be immediate, but no call for help ever goes unanswered.
“It’s mostly individuals who can’t afford private snow removal,” said Jarvis, a resident of Terre Hill. “We’re a faith-based organization. We take everyone at their word. We haven’t really been taken advantage of at this point.”
From modest origins during the pandemic, the Lancaster Snow Angels have grown in number to about 43 shovelers and snow removers - 35 adults and eight junior volunteers. The volunteers work together in teams or crews.
130 to 200 requests for help. The Snow Angels’ coverage area currently encompasses the communities of Lititz, Ephrata, New Holland, Columbia, Denver, Strasburg, Paradise, Willow Street, Elizabethtown and portions of the city.
“It is a big county,” said Jarvis. “That’s why it gets so hard sometimes. We’re talking about 10 to 30 addresses per town, or on one Angel’s list. We’re pretty much covering every town in the county. Wherever there’s a need, we fill it. Sometimes it takes three or four days to clear a substantial snow. But we get it done.”
“We’ve gained a lot of unofficial grandparents who have become parts of our (extended) families,” she added. “They don’t have anyone else, so we become parts of their families. Some of these people are suffering from loneliness.”
Spring Painting and Movement, for kids ages 4 to 7, on Saturday, March 22; and Parent + Child: Creating a Fabric Banner, for kids ages 4 to 7, on Wednesday, March 26. Joanna Spicer will lead the Feb. 26 and March 26 classes, and Nichole Madonna will lead the March 22 class.
The Center for Creative Exploration at PCA&D offers creative experiences for adults, high school students, and children in grades one to nine. Its goal is to provide community education for enthusiastic beginners and aspiring professionals, as well as both credit-bearing and non-credit class options occurring throughout the year on evenings and weekends, both online and in person. Current class listings can be found at www.pcad. edu/cce.
“Most of us are doing it around full-time jobs,” said Jarvis. “Sometimes we call off, and our bosses know what we’re doing. We’re working around obligations. We have everyone prioritized.”
“Shoveling snow is very taxing on your shoulders, arms and back,” Jarvis continued. “The first day after a storm, you’re no good to anyone. There’s a recovery period needed. We’re going two or three days beyond the storm.”
Depending upon the severity of the storm and the amount of snow that has fallen, the Lancaster Snow Angels respond to
In January of 2020, Jarvis; her husband, Fernando Rosado Jr.; and co-founder Mike Schmelder identified a need for helping their neighbors with snow removal. Through social media, word of mouth and some other very organic sources, the movement has grown steadily.
“Volunteers have come to us through multiple channels, and I’m grateful for that,” said Jarvis. “They are strangers who have become family. We’ve experienced a lot of growth client-wise and volunteer-wise. There’s a great need. It brings the communities together.”

team’s outreach work have been free robotics camps at the Manheim Township Community Library and community makerspaces.
“Within our mission, everyone has to contribute,” said Janny. “(Team members) have learned to present and to teach kids. Each of them has a different personality. They’ve learned how hard it is to get sponsorships. If you asked the kids about the highlight of what they’ve learned, it would be the electric wiring of the robot. Now they’re really good at it. The kids have learned so much, and we’re still learning.”
“Parents and the community can come together and form more teams,” Janny. “That’s one of our goals: to have more teams in Lancaster County. We try to connect with everyone. Everyone we meet, we try to talk about it.”
“My favorite event was going to the Manheim Township Public Library and working with students who were enthusiastic about STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math),” said Grant.
Other Lancaster County robotics teams are currently being sponsored by the Warwick School District, the School District of Lancaster and the Manheim Township School District.
“It’s just such a wellrounded program,” said Janny. “Sometimes the team members are referred to as ‘the kids who ask too many questions.’”

Penn State Extension has released an updated version of the Walk by Faith trainthe-trainer educational program, offered in partnership with the Penn State Cancer Institute. A training for organizations will be offered on Thursday, March 13, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the basement training room at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.
Walk by Faith is a community-based program designed to encourage a healthy lifestyle that includes walking, with the goal of helping participants become more physically active and reduce their cancer risk. The program can be tailored to fit the needs and wants of the community where it is being presented.
During the program, participants set and track personal health goals, sup-
plemented by educational sessions intended to provide additional motivation and support. The toolkit offers resources for educational and motivational presentations, guidance for setting healthy lifestyle and activity goals, and group activities to encourage physical activity and healthy eating.
The curriculum writers noted that local community organizations implementing the program can reach individuals of various education levels, employment types, and incomes. These community organizations also can provide social support and reinforcement to members, especially if they share a common goal of wanting to change health behaviors.
To register for the training, visit https://extension .psu.edu/walk-by-faith -instructor-training-for -organizations. For more
