MTHS students learn to fight a killer
BY JEFF FALK
The life lessons to be learned from extracurricular activities are profound and far-reaching. But this event took the teaching of life lessons to a whole other level.
Recently, a group of Manheim Township High School (MTHS) students and teachers learned skills and techniques that could be considered both life-altering and lifesaving, figuratively and literally.
“This ranks right up at the top of the experiences we have provided,” said Mark Evans, who’s been the head football coach and a school counselor at MTHS
“It’s about life experiences. It’s about constant character development.”
for 13 years. “There’s no other way to describe it. Our (football) program is not just about X’s and O’s. It’s not just about the football experience. It’s about life experiences. It’s about constant character development. It’s what we’re trying to teach our group.”
During a morning strength -training class in late February, about 105 MTHS students in grades nine through 11 and teachers - a vast majority of whom are associated with the Blue Streaks’ highly successful football program - were certified in CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and AED (automated external defibrillator) use. The training was provided free of charge by

the Peyton Walker Foundation and offered to the students and teachers on a voluntary basis.
Of those 105 individuals, all but two became certified in CPR/ AED training for the first time.
“Sudden cardiac arrest is the No. 1 killer of high school kids,” said Evans. “I think (CPR/AED is) an essential life-saving skill. I was just looking for a vehicle for training a large group of kids.”
“I’ve been CPR-trained for 30 years,” continued Evans. “I’ve never had to use it. But it’s better
to have it and not use it than to not have it and need it. I can’t say enough about having that skill.”
The CPR/AED training was led by Billy Odom, an instructor with the Peyton Walker Foundation, and four local emergency medical technicians (EMTs). Located in Mechanicsburg, the Peyton Walker Foundation, which is named for a 19-year-old college sophomore who died due to cardiac arrest in 2013, provides education, training, screenings and equipment to organizations and

Like golfers who win the Masters Tournament and the green jackets tailored for them, Good Samaritan Services (Good Sam) and Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) are ideally suited for one another.
The two community-minded organizations are once again linking up for the 18th annual EPC Golf Outing benefiting Good Samaritan Services.

The charity event will be held Friday, June 6, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. There will be two sessions of golf. The first will tee off at 7:30 a.m., and the second will start at 1:30 p.m.
A light breakfast and a chicken
barbecue lunch will be served to the morning groups; the afternoon groups will receive a light café lunch and a chicken barbecue meal for dinner.

In 2015, Deon Butler was living a dream, playing professional football for the Detroit Lions, but he held a secret: Despite having graduated from college, he could not read past a fourth-grade level.
After getting help, Butler was moved to help others, and today, he’s a motivational speaker. He’ll share his story at “Breaking Barriers: A Path of Perseverance.”
The event will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 26, at The
Janus School, 205 Lefever Road, Mount Joy.
Growing up in Michigan, Butler became adept at hiding the secret of his struggle with reading. “I got picked on a lot in middle school and high school, where I was called ‘stupid’ and ‘dumb,’” he recalled. “I bottled it all away, and I got really good at hiding it.”
Butler became a master at memorizing, always chose the easiest book to read if he had to read out loud and avoided situations where his secret might

“You have to determine if the person is unresponsive or if there is breathing,” explained Evans. “You have to let the person know you are there to help if you can. Someone calls 911, someone gets the AED and you start compressions around the breast plate. You sing a song like the old Bee Gees’ song ‘Stayin’ Alive.’ You pump, you pump, you pump, and then another person jumps in until the AED arrives. You make sure you’re pushing firmly, and the mannequin will give you feedback. The AED technology is amazing; it will determine if a shock is needed or not.”
Evans said that the students present at the training were motivated by the seriousness of the subject material.
“They were very attentive,” said Evans. “The kids genuinely came

out of there like, ‘This is really cool.’”
“I was grateful,” added Evans. “When you’re trying new things, you never know how it’s going to resonate.”
The important exercise also served as an invaluable team-building experience for a program whose success is founded on unity.
“(Team building) is every day,” said Evans. “I’m always thinking about group messages. We do a lot of things that are yearround. It’s a process of coming together. To me, team building is paramount to your success. You’re always trying to give (student-athletes) value. That’s where this experience came in.”

running. I’m pouring my heart out to God about my frustration and my depression.”
forgive myself for the trauma I went through in school.”

“There are a lot of words you have to read in football,” he said, referencing playbooks and play strategies. He played professionally for a year in 2015 and then started working as an educational liaison for a social services agency.
“I was good at my job, but I couldn’t get a promotion,” he said. “My supervisors would ask me to document my work, and I couldn’t do that.”
After his mother passed away just before the pandemic, Butler began to take steps to change his situation. He started seeing a therapist, relied on his faith and found support from his wife.
“My therapist asked, ‘What do you like to do?’ and I said, ‘I like to run,’” he said. “I started running 15 to 20 miles, speaking to God as I’m
Then, he learned his wife was pregnant.
“I realized I want to read books to my daughter,” he said. “I want to be that father that reads to his kids every night.”
He decided to take a risk: Tell the truth about his illiteracy on social media.
His posts caught the eye of someone from the Michigan Dyslexia Association, who told Butler he might have the disorder.
He began working with a tutor, discovered he did indeed have dyslexia and started working to relearn the right way to read.
“I really had to go backwards at first,” he said. “I had developed bad habits of memorizing words. I had to relearn my ABC’s, learn how to break down syllables.”
Learning to read was a struggle, he admits.
“There were days when I was crying,” he said, but he relied on God to see him through. “I had to remember, ‘Just let my guard down; let go of my ego.’ I also had to
With lots of hard work, Butler learned to read, and he recalled one day that particularly stood out in his journey.
“I read the Bible out loud,” he said. “I cried so hard, because I had never heard myself read something like that out loud.”
Motivated by his own success and the support he found on social media throughout his journey with dyslexia, Butler wanted to help more people. He worked with lawmakers to pass a dyslexia bill in Michigan.
Now living in the Pittsburgh area, Butler continues to advocate for reading support services.
“I read a lot now,” he said, noting that he’s also in the process of writing a book. “I feel like a blind person who is able to see for the first time. I need to read every book.”
He’s also working with lawmakers in Pennsylvania and Ohio to develop more dyslexia support, and he travels the region to tell his story.
After meeting and speaking with Brenda Keller, director of academics for The Janus School, Butler

was impressed with the school’s mission.
The Janus School is the only independent school in central Pennsylvania dedicated to helping students with language- or mathbased learning disabilities, ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, executive function difficulties, nonverbal learning disorder or auditory processing disorder. The school serves students from seven Pennsylvania counties.
When Butler visits the school in April, he will interact with students and teachers throughout the day on Friday, April 25, and he will share his story in an assembly.
His April 26 event will be open to the public, and Keller hopes his talk will draw a wide range of audience members, from families of students to community members and literary specialists.

“We warmly invite you to attend and encourage you to invite family, friends, teammates, organizations and colleagues,” Keller said. “Let’s come together to hear Deon’s powerful message and celebrate the incredible work of The Janus School.” Tickets are required to attend the public event. To learn more or to purchase tickets, visit https://the janusschool.org/breaking_barriers.
EPC Golf Outing
The deadline to register is Friday, May 23. Go to https://epcgolf outing.com for more information and to register.
Individuals or businesses that wish to sponsor the event or provide prizes can visit the aforementioned website or email EPC marketing and communications director Dan Silva at marketing@ engleonline.com.
“We want to be involved with the communities we serve,” said Jocelyn Engle, who is EPC’s publisher. “We know that some people just need an extra boost in times of need, and this was a perfect fit for us.”
Rachel Shelley, the director of marketing for Good Samaritan Services, agrees. “We love our partnership with EPC,” said Shelley. “Obviously, the funding that comes from the golf outing is helpful in supporting our mission (and) funding the work that we do in the community. Also, EPC is obviously so well-connected, and this is a great awareness-building event for us, too.”
Good Sam has locations across Lancaster and Chester counties and every day serves about 300 people who are in crisis.
“Our mission is to respond with compassion to individuals and families who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of homelessness,” Shelley said.
Anyone who needs assistance from Good Samaritan Services can go to https://goodsam services.org. A Good Sam representative will conduct a screening via a phone call to determine if the organization can help.
EPC is carrying on a family tradition started by company founder Alvin Engle, who was Jocelyn’s grandfather. Alvin was involved with numerous philanthropic endeavors and set the tone for the company going forward, Jocelyn said.
Since its inception, the golf outing has generated nearly $300,000 for neighbors in need.
“We want to make the experience memorable for golfers and also make sure community members are aware of what Good Sam does,” Jocelyn said. “We want to (send the message) that everyone is included. We want to make sure (the golf outing is) affordable for everybody to take part. … I think what’s so neat about our event is we’ve had so many returning sponsors and golfers because it is something people look forward to every year.”
Many of Good Sam’s 30 staff members will volunteer at the golf event. “Our staff loves coming to the golf outing,” Shel -
ley said. “It’s such a cool day for our staff. A lot of them are working directly with the people we serve every day providing case management, and it’s a heavy job. It’s important, important work. It’s really important for our staff to come on the day of the golf outing and see the community support for the work that they’re doing.”
Good Samaritan Services executive director Nate Hoffer will attend the outing. “His true passion for what he and his team members do has been fun for us to watch as an organization, because we know everyone is being taken care of by Good Sam,” said Jocelyn.
Only 3% of Good Samaritan Services’ budget is funded by the government. “People have been generous and kind in supporting and believing in the work we do,” said Shelley.
Good Sam will be expanding its impact with two homes in Phoenixville. It will be the first time Good Sam will offer housing for women in Phoenixville. The homes will continue to provide safe housing for women facing homelessness, with the added resources of Good Sam.
Shelley stated Good Sam takes an individualized approach to caring for clients. “Everyone in crisis has their own individual story,” she said. “They are on a unique path on how they are going to reach stability.”
Clients meet one-on-one with a resource coordinator, who provides case management with “bite-size goals” for them to work on, Shelley said. She added Good Sam team members “take this large problem of crisis and break it into sizable goals while walking alongside them in that journey and equipping them with tools.”
There are no quick fixes. The goal is to remove any barriers that might be in the way of clients achieving long-term housing stability.
Courtney and her 3-year-old daughter, Cherish, were the first family to move into Good Samaritan Services’ Lancaster city residence for women and children, which opened last year.
“Good Sam Services has gone out of their way to make sure I have everything I need and more,” Courtney said. “The opportunities I’ve received are truly a blessing. They helped keep me going when I could have quit, and I’m so grateful for their support. For the first time in a long time, I feel like I can breathe.”
