Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation
slates Burns Night Celebration
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
The Octorara Covenanter
Presbyterian Foundation will host its annual Burns Night Celebration on Saturday, Feb. 1, at Beale Manor, 200 S. Church St., Parkesburg. The event will take place from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m., and the price of admission will include live entertainment, food and drinks that are unique to Scottish culture.
When guests arrive at Beale Manor, they will hear the distinct sound of a bagpipe ringing through the halls of the historic home. Bagpiper Tyler Destremps will continue to perform until all guests
have arrived, and the celebration will kick off with a social time and a second musical performance by fiddler Tom Knapp.
After Destremps and Knapp set the tone for the evening with

traditional Scottish compositions, Charlie Zahm will lead a haggis ceremony. The time-honored ritual will include a tasting of haggis, a savory dish that is made using the heart, lungs and liver of a sheep.
The meat is minced with chopped onion, oatmeal, suet and a medley of spices and broth, and ingredients are customarily cooked inside the sheep’s stomach. In addition to offering a tasting of haggis, Zahm will discuss the cultural significance of the Scottish delicacy. The ceremony will conclude with a tasting of Scottish whiskey.
Although haggis has been enjoyed in the United Kingdom since the 15th century, the meal was made popular by “Address to a Haggis,” a poem that Burns published in 1786. In Burns’ poem, he describes the ingredients of haggis and marvels at its image and flavor. Shortly after “Address to a Haggis” was published, the

AgConnect announces Chester County farming awards
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Lisa McNamara, who retired in 2024 as Octorara Area School District’s director of Career and Technical Education (CTE), recently received the Duncan Allison Distinguished Service to Agriculture Award for her service to agriculture education.
She was presented the award by AgConnect, a public-private partnership that supports farmers and agricultural businesses and promotes the value of farming in Chester County. AgConnect also presented the Farmer of the Year Award to Bob and Ryan Rohrer of Rob-Roy Farm in Nottingham.
The awards were given out in December during a special ceremony held at Octorara Junior-Senior High School. Among those in attendance were Chester County Commissioners Josh Maxwell, Marian Moskowitz and Eric Roe; AgConnect executive advisory committee members; Octorara staff members; and guests.
For McNamara, who now lives in Ocean City, Md., it was her first visit back to Octorara after retiring.
“Culinary arts students made an impressive lunch for us. All the commissioners were there. It was an absolutely wonderful event,” said McNamara, noting that she was nominated for the award by Penn State Extension educator Jodi Gauker. “I was pleasantly surprised, honored and humbled.”
McNamara started as an instructional support teacher for the school district and also served as principal of the Octorara Primary Learning Center. She then transferred to serve as the Octorara Area School

District’s kindergarten through 12th grade program administrator and CTE program director. In addition to agriculture, CTE programs prepare students for careers in business, woodworking, engineering, childhood education, graphic design and illustration, culinary, law enforcement, firefighting, emergency medical services, computer technology, animal and plant science, engine repair and more.
“I decided to change my career and went to the high school and built all the technical education programs there for the last nine or 10 years. It was quite fun, and that’s where I ended my career,” McNamara stated. “We started off with eight programs and ended with 12. We had over 250 kids in the program by the time I left. It was under 100 before. It was a great experience, and agriculture was a big part of it.”
McNamara said that through the programs, students learn about the many career opportunities that revolve around agriculture. “My biggest goal was to promote
agriculture,” she said. “We are a rural community surrounded by farmland, and the students, community and the teachers need to know that agriculture is not just about farming. It has every industry within it. You have to be a businessman, have marketing (skills) and be a soil scientist. You have to know manufacturing.”
“Agriculture and CTE programs are vital pathways that open incredible opportunities for our
students, many of whom don’t come from agricultural backgrounds,” she added.
Additionally, McNamara expanded the Octorara Agriculture, Business, Environmental Science and Technology (OABEST) Expo, growing it from a small event to a community-wide celebration. “The purpose of OABEST was to promote agriculture, and every year I continued that and had someone from the agriculture industry speak,” she noted. “(OABEST) got built up to include our other programs, but agriculture was still the focus.”
“(During my career), I worked hard to promote and change mindsets about agriculture,” she added.
Bob and Ryan Rohrer, the father and son team who operate Rob-Roy Farm, were honored for their decades-long commitment to sustainable farming and land stewardship. Bob has farmed in Chester County since 1952, taking
over Rob-Roy Farm in 1966. Over the years, the farm transitioned from hog production to focus on row crops, including corn, soybeans, wheat, barley and sorghum. The Rohrers utilize conservation practices, planting cover crops on every acre to improve soil health, water retention and weed suppression.
Beyond their farm, the Rohrers are active in their community, volunteering with Chester County 4-H programs and advocating for agriculture through the Chester Delaware County Farm Bureau.
“Farming has been my life - faith, family and farming,” Bob stated when accepting the award. “It’s humbling to be chosen, especially when I know so many other deserving farmers in Chester County.”

he invented. “(His story) is one that I have been wanting to share for a long time,” said Dickinson. “My brother and I discussed it at length - how can we make sure that his contributions are not forgotten?”
Since her brother passed away, Dickinson said it became her responsibility to share her grandfather’s story as she is his only surviving grandchild. “We formed the William Chester Ruth Legacy Project (in 2022) in order to help us further spread this story,” she noted. “Fortunately, we made a lot of progress in terms of getting the word out. One of the first things we did when we formed the project was to interview people from the community who knew my grandfather. We were able to interview them, and we did a short video of their recollections of my grandfather.”
Dickinson shared the video with audience members, which further described Ruth as a visionary and awe-inspiring.
According to the video, Ruth’s father, Samuel, was a former slave, who was taken from his mother’s arms as the plantation owners sold her into slavery when Samuel was 7 years old. Samuel later joined the Union Army at the age of 13. After the war, Samuel traveled to Pennsylvania with two of his Union Army friends where he met and fell in love with his wife, Maria Louisa Pinn, who was the sister of one his friends. Samuel
and Louisa, as she was known, married at age 15 and eventually settled in Ercildoun. Samuel worked as a thresherman and then started his own threshing businesses. Louisa had 12 children, including William, who was born in 1882.
From an early age, Ruth had a mechanical mind, and he became used to using farming and threshing equipment from his father’s businesses. He also became skilled in blacksmithing.
Ruth eventually married Gertrude Miller from Gap in 1906, and they settled in the Gap area.
Around 1917, Ruth landed a job at Lukens Iron and Steel Company in Coatesville. Later, in 1923, he opened Ruth’s Ironworks on Route 30 in Gap, which specialized in welding and metal fabrication.
Ruth’s first patented invention was the combination baler feeder in 1925. The machine collected straw that was exiting a thresher and fed the straw efficiently into the chamber of a baler. He sold more than 5,000 baler feeder machines.
Ruth then invented a farm elevator, which was used to transport bays of hay to silos. In 1928, Ruth invented an automatic tie for a hay baler. His next invention, the mechanical cinder spreader, was used to spread cinders over icy roads.
“Grandfather was inquisitive and industrious. In the 1950s, he

dish became officially designated as the national dish of Scotland, and the poem is typically recited during a haggis ceremony.
A supper buffet will be served after the haggis ceremony. Food options will include haggis, Angus beef, red lentil soup, salad and trifle, as well as neeps and tatties, a dish made from mashed turnips and potatoes.
After supper, attendees will be invited to commemorate Burns’ life with toasts, speeches and readings of the poet’s works. Charlie Zahm will present “A Tribute to Robert Burns,” a show that will incorporate Burns’ writing and traditional Scottish music. As the evening concludes, Zahm will invite guests to encircle a piano and sing Burns’ songs together.
“I think people with Scottish heritage enjoy celebrating it, but that’s not to say (Burns Night) is not open to everybody,” said Donna McCool, who co-chairs the annual event alongside John Girvin. “You don’t need to have Scottish ancestors to
invented an aerial-type amusement park ride,” Dickinson pointed out, noting that he first created a scale model of his idea. “He built a full-sized one for me. My friends and I had the privilege of riding it.”
In the beginning of World War II, when he was 60, Ruth was commissioned by the United States government to design and manufacture secret wartime devices for airplanes. Some of his inventions were later used in the design of the Trident missile in the 1950s.
Ruth died in an automobile accident in Lancaster County on April 3, 1971. He was 89.
Dickinson noted that the Landis Valley Museum features a William Chester Ruth exhibit, where visitors can view working models of Ruth’s inventions and a full-scale example of his baler feeder. He was also granted a Pennsylvania Historical Marker, located at the former site of his shop in Gap, in 2006.
Concluding her talk, Dickinson provided each audience member with a magnet that features a quote by her grandfather, which reads, “You were born with a purpose for being in this world. Develop your capabilities to the fullest.”

Paul noted that some people who have gone through the GriefShare program return, since the information can be applied to people at different stages of grief. “Each session is self-contained, and you can repeat the ones you want or repeat all of them,” he said.
In addition, group members sometimes form friendships and may get together outside the scheduled meetings. “In the group there are clusters of people who choose to meet outside the group as well. They meet as often as they want,” Paul said. “In the one group we had, a few of (the participants) met even a year or two after the (GriefShare) sessions.”
While the sessions are designed for people age 15 and older, people of all ages may attend GriefShare meetings, whether they have lost a spouse, parent, child, friend, sibling, other relative or co-worker. “(In) the last group we had some people in their 20s. Often we have some younger people that are part of the group,” said Paul.
The Rancks have been facilitating GriefShare sessions since 2002. At one time, the meetings were held in their home. “We are
on the third reproduction of the videos,” Paul noted. “We started with the original video series, and they updated them a couple of times. It is the same content with small adjustments, different people, different speakers and some different examples. There are speakers that talk on the videos, and there are also people who are going through grief and loss who share.”
Even with the passage of time, Paul said the goal of the group has remained the same - to support individuals who are dealing with loss. “We have enjoyed doing it, and we learned a lot. Every group provides (positive) feedback,” he stated. “(When) we have participants come through all 13 weeks, it becomes almost like a family and as close as a family.”
“What is really encouraging and interesting is we will be out, and people will come up to us and say, ‘Thank you,’” he added. “When they come up to us, it means a lot.”
For more information about the GriefShare session at Gateway Church or to register, visit www.griefshare.org/ groups/254802. Walk-ins will also be welcome. GriefShare attendees should enter through the church’s main door and follow the signs to the meeting room. No child care is offered.
