McCaw to share her music and story at OLC Listening Party
BY FRANCINE FULTON
“As a singer-songwriter, I pride myself on having my songs sound a little different,” said Adriana McCaw, when announcing the release of her contemporary Christian album titled “Greater.”
“Everything has a good Christian message, but there are some songs that are more on the rock side, some on the pop side and there is singer-songwriter-esque music with me on the piano. There is something in there for everybody.”
McCaw, an accompanist and youth minister at Our Lady of Consolation (OLC) Church in Parkesburg, will celebrate the album’s release with a Listening Party, where she will share her new music, as well as insight into the writing and recording of the album. The album was released on Jan. 31 and the Listening Party will be held on Friday, Feb. 7, at 7 p.m. at OLC’s Schneider Parish Center, 2995 Cemetery Road, Parkesburg. CDs will be available for purchase at the event, and snacks will be provided.
“We will listen to the new album, and I will play some things from the album,” McCaw said, adding that the event is free, but donations will be accepted for the parish’s music ministry.
McCaw is a graduate of Octorara Junior-Senior High School and is also a music instructor in addition to her duties at OLC. “I play for three out of four Masses on the weekend and serve as youth minister,” she noted. “I am in charge of our high school youth group,

and I help with the middle school group.”
This is the second contemporary Christian album that she has released. The first was titled “Enough.”
“I wrote all the music that is on these albums,” McCaw noted. “Me and the Holy Spirit have to write together. For me,
it’s a faithful experience.”
McCaw also held a Listening Party for her first album at the church in August of 2022. “We had close to 75 or 100 people (in attendance),” she said, noting that she enjoys watching people react to her music. “I like people to not only hear the music, but to get the words. It’s nice to

Octorara Area Food Cupboard welcomes new director
BY FRANCINE FULTON
The Octorara Area Food Cupboard (OAFC) recently welcomed Cherie Myers as its new director. She succeeds longtime director Judy Dougherty, who retired last September after serving the pantry as director for 18 years. Myers, who has lived in Parkesburg for 35 years, previously worked at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center.
“I retired from the VA Medical Center in July after 18 years as administrative officer of nutrition and food services,” she stated. “At the Coatesville VA Medical Center, we had a food bank, and I was involved with that. I had

A lifetime on the tracks
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
In 1973, Jim Rice was looking for a part-time job. Many other young residents of Strasburg made some extra cash when they weren’t in school by bagging groceries or staffing Dutch Wonderland. Rice, who was 15 years old at the time, decided he would rather work for the Strasburg Rail Road, and he took a part-time position as a member of the grounds maintenance crew. What Rice didn’t know at the time was that he had found more than an afterschool gig - it was the start of
an adventure that would last 51 years.
“Most of my friends were mowing grass. I applied to work at the railroad since I had some mechanical aptitude for a young kid,” said Rice. “I was always interested in machines growing up, but the train part came later.”
On Dec. 31, 2024, Rice took his last ride as a full-time employee of the Strasburg Rail Road. Since joining the grounds maintenance crew as a young man, Rice has worn many hats and held many titles, including that of an engineer, road foreman of

She said that she is a fan of country music and other musical styles, all of which she incorporates into her own songs. “There is a little bit of every genre in my albums because I listen to everything,” she said. “When I was in college, my composition teacher said that I was one of the few students that he would leave our lessons humming the songs. I took that to heart.”
She added that people who attend the upcoming Listening Party will hear some memorable tunes to carry with them. “I have a lot of catchy songs,” she stated. “You can take these good words with you. It doesn’t just stay in the building (after) we listen to it.”
“Christian music is (not just) something you hear in church,” she added. “There are other varieties of it.”

Volunteers are especially needed in the sorting room, where incoming donations are labeled. “If the Cub Scouts have a food drive and they bring in a trailer, they load it into our storage shed out back, and then they weigh it as they bring it in,” she explained. “Every piece has to be sorted and dated before it goes out on the shelf.”

Some of the food distributed at the food pantry comes from the Chester County Food Bank as well as state and federal providers, but much of the food comes from food drives.
“We get generous donations from the community,” Myers said, noting that local grocery stores also donate food, including baked goods.
The pantry is open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. and from 2 to 3:45 p.m. Although a drive-through format was utilized during the pandemic, clients are now able to “shop” for the items that they need inside the building, including canned goods, dairy products and fresh vegetables. “Once a month they get a big order, and weekly, they get a partial (order of food),” Myers noted.
“In two days, we serve over 100
families. This past week we gave out oranges, pineapples and we even had sweet corn.”
She said people of all ages utilize the food bank, including senior citizens and young mothers with children. “You hear all kinds of stories,” Myers said. “Some of the people I see here work in the businesses around here. It’s not that people don’t work; they are living paycheck to paycheck and trying to make ends meet.”

engines, track supervisor and vice president of operations and roadway.
When Rice turned 18 years old, he asked for a full-time position as a general laborer on locomotives and the track. Although he was always interested in machinery, Rice said he never had an interest in trains until he started working for the railroad. Once he was a full-time employee, Rice learned trades such as welding and machining to become more involved with railroad operations.
“That’s when I got more interested,” said Rice. “I thought that being able to operate something of historical significance and learning the process would be cool.”
In addition to getting hands-on experience working on the locomo
tives, Rice had access to a wealth of information and archived materials about every part of a steam engine and how it functions. Rice was still working as a general laborer when he had his first opportunity to drive a train, after an engineer offered to let him take the reins. “I was pretty taken aback. Here I was, a 20-yearold kid operating this big broiler locomotive,” Rice said.
At the same time that Rice was becoming a locomotive expert, the Strasburg Rail Road was growing into more than just a tourist attraction.
The historic rail line was restored by a group of train enthusiasts in the late ’50s, and ridership during its first year of tourist passenger operations was nearly 9,000. By 1991, annual

ridership peaked at 475,000 passengers, and the Strasburg Rail Road had evolved into a nationally known enterprise capable of restoring steam locomotives and contracting specialized equipment to local manufacturers.
Rice said some of his fondest memories at the railroad were times that he rode a steam engine to other parts of Pennsylvania and nearby states, after the National Railway Historical Society began to sponsor the trips in 1985. “We were going 50mph when we were used to going 15mph
in Strasburg,” Rice added. “It was sort of a ‘pinch me’ moment.”
Although Rice is no longer a fulltime employee, he said that he’ll be around to offer his insight to help with training new employees and track operations. Now that Rice is retired, he said that he is looking forward to spending more time with his family, hunting and riding his motorcycle.
“The people I’ve worked with and worked for at the railroad got me this far without any incidents,” said Rice. “I feel grateful. It’s turned out to be a great place to work.”

“We need donations of food or money (to buy) food. If we run out of donated food, we purchase food,” Myers noted.
Myers said she has been enjoying her new job because of the opportunity to work with people from the community. “I was not interacting with people; I was interacting with my computer (at my previous job),” she stated. “With my background, I like to be around people; I used to own a hair salon.”
“It is something new every day,” she added. “Coming in, you think you are (just) giving out food. Then you meet the people and their babies. One (client) just got her citizenship, so she was celebrating, and we celebrated (with her).”

The goal of the cookie sales, according to GSEP, is to teach Girl Scouts five essential skills - goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics. “They learn how to talk to people, how to deal with people who say no and learning to adapt to the situation,” said Sara.
