ABATE Helps Fill NSC Food Pantry By Marcella Peyre-Ferry

The food storage area at Neighborhood Services Center (NSC) in Oxford was empty when members of the ABATE Motorcycle Club rolled up on June 30 with trailers full of food, baby supplies and pet food. ABATE of Chester County Chapter 64 is a regional chapter of ABATE of Pennsylvania. ABATE, which stands for Alliance of Bikers Aimed Toward Education, is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to the protection of individual rights of motorcyclists through political change, charitable works and public education.

This was the 29th year for ABATE of Chester County to organize the Dwight Wallace Memorial Motorcycle Food Run for NSC. “We wanted to do something that was in memory of one of our fallen brothers in the chapter,” group member Tim Killinger said. Wallace’s mother, Arta Thomas, rode along with the bikers, wearing a memorial T-shirt with her late son’s picture. This year in particular was notable as the event was taking place 30 years after Wallace’s death. “I think (the event) is awesome; it’s absolutely wonderful,” she said. This year alone, ABATE members delivered approximately 23,000 pounds of goods to the NSC building in Oxford. See ABATE pg 7

To incentivize team members throughout the challenge period, the winning team was promised a donation, made in its name, to the Chester County Hero Fund. The Hero Fund provides financial assistance to the families of Chester County police officers, deputy sheriffs, firefighters, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, and state troopers who have lost their life or who are seriously injured in the line of duty. At the Chester County commissioners’ recent Sunshine Meeting, Health Department director Jeanne Casner announced the results of the WalkWorks ChesCo! First Responder Challenge - a competition that asked Chester County residents to support the county’s 5,000-plus emergency responders by joining a first responder team to compete and see who could walk the most steps in an eight-week period. During the challenge, members of the three first responder teams took more than 148.3 million steps. Team Fire, Team Law Enforcement, and Team Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were captained by Chester County Commissioners Terence Farrell, Michelle Kichline, and Kathi Cozzone, respectively, and aimed to sign up the most walkers and clock the most steps. Close to 400 county residents took part in the First Responder Challenge. Team Fire clocked the highest cumulative steps - more than 53 million. Team Law Enforcement registered the highest average individual steps at 8,180 per day. Team EMS member Yolanda Van de Krol had the highest average daily steps at more than 26,000 a day.

IYPT from pg 1 articulate your thoughts to someone who has no idea what you’re talking about. I don’t think you get that experience anywhere else, especially in a traditional school setting, Eric said. “One of the most important parts is the mathematical theory, so you have to come up with the mathematical models to demonstrate how the phenomenon occurs. There’s experimentation and there’s math theory, and you have to get all of those into the presentation, so it makes sense. The international tournament has been held annually since 1988. A grant and funding from the school districts are helping to fund the team’s trip to China. Although there will be teams from throughout the world, the competition will be held in English. To learn more about the event, readers may visit www.iypt.org. All students on the team are recent graduates of their respective high schools. They all plan to continue their education in the fall: Jarod at the University of Delaware, Ben at Drexel University, Katherine at Ursinus College, Eric at Haverford College, and Anthony at Rochester Institute of Technology.

Students from three area schools have earned places on the United States team that will take part in the International Young Physicists Tournament (IYPT) in Beijing, China, on Thursday, July 19, through Wednesday, July 25. Katherine Baker of Coatesville Area Senior High School (CASH), Eric Beery and Anthony Mazur of Phoenixville Area High School (PAHS), and Jarod Dagney and Ben Mellema of Octorara Area High School (OAHS), along with two alternates, Willetta Wisely from PAHS and Kyle Quinn from OAHS, were chosen for the local team at a selection competition at the Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU) in March. On April 14, the five team members and two alternates traveled to the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia for the regional competition, where they defeated a team from Princeton Regional Institute of Science and Math, a New Jersey STEM high school, to earn the right to represent the United States in the international competition. The students began to prepare for the regional competition when they started the school year last fall. They were presented with 17 physics problems that do not have readily available answers. Working in clubs after school and in their free time, they researched the problems and came up with solutions and presentations. Each school has a teacher

involved in its club to help the students with their research and to prepare them for competition. Assisting teachers are William McWatters, OAHS; David Fenimore, CASH; and Jay Jennings, PAHS. Thirty-five teams will compete in the IYPT, where the five local students hope to be among the top 15 finishers. The team members all have a knowledge of each of the 17 problems, but each of them has specialized in two or three specific problems. Since the team was selected, the students have continued to work alone and together to prepare for the IYPT. The problems represent a wide range of physics topics. Ben took on the acoustic levitation problem, and with the help of other OAHS Physics Club members, created a working model that can keep very small, lightweight foam balls hovering in mid-air by the use of sound waves. Because the competition is being held in China, the team members are unable to take the equipment they have built to the IYPT with them. Instead, they will be prepared with data, videos, and PowerPoint presentations. For the IYPT competition, a team will present its findings on one of the problems to a panel of judges and two other teams. One of those teams will dispute that solution, and the other will review how well the solution and the dispute were presented, commenting on each. All three teams will be scored on their work. “It forces you to find a way to

July 21: All You Can Eat Breakfast

Officially opened on May 19 at the Oxford Area Regional Park, 900 W. Locust St., the dog park is already a popular destination for dog lovers. There are separate areas for large and small canines, as well as a secure vestibule area for the security of animals and their handlers. The vestibule includes a raised bed garden, a comfortable bench and a repurposed parking meter that accepts donations in change. Each of the dog run areas includes a bench for people to relax, as well as interesting fixtures for play with the dogs, including tunnels and agility poles. In the large dog area, there is a real fire hydrant generously donated by Oxford Borough. The OARA board members hope that the community is enjoying the new dog park and that it will continue to attract people and their pets. To help cover continuing maintenance costs at the dog park and the park overall, the brick sale fundraiser was recently initiated. Originally, the cut-off date for the purchase of bricks was set for Labor Day to allow for installation this fall. However, people have commented that personalized bricks would make good Christmas presents. In response, brick sales are being extended until the end of the year, with installation in the spring of 2019 as soon as weather permits. Bricks are available in two sizes - standard bricks and double size. The larger-size bricks are large enough to include a business logo at no additional cost. Forms for brick purchases are available from OARA board members and at a variety of businesses throughout Oxford. Bricks may also be ordered online by visiting www.treasoara .wixsite.com/oxfordrecreation and choosing “Buy-A-Brick Fundraiser.” More information and photos of the dog park are available at www.facebook.com/Rec Authority/. OARA reserves the right to refuse sale of bricks if the message is considered to be inappropriate. OARA is a multi-municipal authority with board representatives from East Nottingham, Elk, Lower Oxford and West Nottingham townships and Oxford Borough. In addition to the dog park, the Oxford Area Regional Park features baseball/softball facilities, a multipurpose athletic field, walking trails, picnic areas and a pavilion available for rent.

Tandoori Turkey Burgers M u l c h D e l i v e r y Many people feel no backyard 3 - For the cumin yogurt sauce, barbecue is complete without staples like hot dogs and hamburgers. But grill masters need not feel beholden to such fare if their hearts and stomachs desire something less traditional. One of the joys of grilling is that there is a seemingly endless array of foods that can be cooked over an open flame. Grilled foods can be lean and healthy while still providing that unmistakable flavor unique to the grill. People who want to expand their grilling horizons while still providing juicy, delicious fare can try the recipe for Tandoori Turkey Burgers with Grilled Red Onions and Tomatoes from Karen Adler and Judith Fertig’s “The Gardener and The Grill” (Running Press). Tandoori Turkey Burgers with Grilled Red Onions and Tomatoes (Serves 4) Turkey Burgers 1 lb. ground turkey 1/4 cup fine, dry breadcrumbs 2 T plain yogurt 1 tsp turmeric 1 tsp ground coriander 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp fine kosher or sea salt Cumin Yogurt Sauce 1/2 cup plain yogurt 1/2 tsp ground cumin Kosher or sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste Toppings 2 large red onions, thickly sliced 2 large beefsteak tomatoes, thickly sliced 4 seeded hamburger buns Olive oil, for brushing Kosher or sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste 1 cup shredded lettuce 2 T chopped fresh cilantro

The golf outing, which took place on June 8, raised more than $22,600 to benefit Bridge of Hope at Good Samaritan Services, whose mission is to provide housing and supportive services to individuals and families experiencing homelessness in Lancaster and Chester counties. EPC’s golf outing has raised a total of $135,000 in 10 years. “I wish (there was no need) to do it at all,” Killinger said. “Once a year, we get all this and load up their basement. Unfortunately, in about three months it will be empty again.” NSC board vice chair James Saltysiak appreciates the help ABATE provides. “It makes a huge difference. This is about a quarter of our entire year’s worth of food they do in this one drive,” he said. “This will last us about three months. In the summer, people (may not) think about people needing food. This is a critical time.” In addition to the canned goods and nonperishable food items, ABATE collects funds for NSC so that the agency is able to purchase items to supplement the stockpiled foods as needed. Saltysiak is appreciative of the effort that ABATE puts into the food drive. “They collect all June. It’s a ton of effort, and it

combine the cumin and yogurt together in a bowl until smooth. Season to taste with salt and pepper. 4 - Toss the shredded lettuce and cilantro in a bowl and set aside. 5 - Lightly brush the sliced onions, tomatoes and cut side of the hamburger buns with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Grill the patties, onions and tomatoes directly over the fire. Grill the tomatoes for about 2 to 3 minutes on each side. Turn the burgers once after 7 to 8 minutes, then grill for another 7 to 8 minutes, or until the burgers are no longer pink inside and an instant-read thermometer registers 160 F in the center of each patty. 6 - Grill the onions for about 8 to 9 minutes, turning once halfway through the cooking time, or until softened and slightly charred. During the last minutes of grilling, toast the buns, cut side down, directly over the fire. 7 - To serve, place a patty on each bun. Top with a slice of grilled onion, tomato and 1/4 cup of lettuce mixture and a dollop of yogurt sauce. Serve the extra grilled onion and tomato slices on the side.

With students home from school for the summer, even more nonperishable goods and toiletries are needed to fill the Community Food Boxes that have been installed throughout the community by It Takes a Village, a nonprofit organization that was founded in the spring of 2017. The boxes are located along Business Route 30 between Downingtown and Coatesville. A plaque is posted on each box that reads, in part, “Take only what you need, leave behind what you can, be the village for your neighbor.” In order to keep the program going, a core group of volunteers, called Box Buddies, keeps the containers restocked. Vintage Base Ball from pg 1 Spectators will be treated to the game of “base ball” as it was played in 1864, which means players, called “ballists,” will be dressed in historically similar attire and use periodappropriate equipment, including handmade wooden bats and hand-stitched balls. In addition, players in vintage base ball do not wear gloves and only one baseball is used during the entire game. The Brandywine BBC, which formed in 2013, competes with other vintage clubs in the Mid Atlantic Vintage Base Ball

League. The team has grown in size and skill since its formation. “ We have received many compliments from our opponents who are impressed with our improvement and our large roster,” reported team player Rick Stratton, noting that the club has six wins and eight losses to date. “We have a handful of new ballists this year, which has been really helpful when others are not available to play because of vacation, injury or other commitments.” Like other teams that play outdoor sports, players have

been subjected to intense heat during their past several outings. “We (recently) played a doubleheader in 95-degree heat,” Stratton noted. “Luckily, the pace was fast, and we were able to finish both matches before 2:30 p.m.” All home matches are played at East Goshen Park, and games take place in an open grassy area in the park. Canvas bags or sacks filled with rubber chips are used as bases. Following the doubleheader, the team will compete in the Gettysburg Vintage Base Ball Festival on Saturday and Sunday, July 21 and 22. “We are getting very excited for the

upcoming Vintage Base Ball Festival in Gettysburg,” Stratton stated. “We will be playing the Cincinnati Red Stockings one of the most storied clubs in the country, dating back to 1869.” The next home game for the Brandywine BBC will take place on Saturday, Aug. 11, at 11 a.m. against the Liberty Base Ball Club of New Brunswick, N.J. A complete list of games is available at www.brandywinebbc.org/schedule.
