Wizard Faire To Benefit Atglen Library By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
“Wizards” of all ages are invited to attend the first Di-Atglen Alley Wizard Faire on Saturday, July 28, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. During the event, the borough of Atglen will become an enchanted campus filled with magic and fun, with activities taking place along Main Street and Valley Avenue in Atglen. The Atglen Public Library (APL) has organized the event as a fundraiser for the library. Designed along the lines of popular movies and books that feature young wizards in training, the day’s events and activities are so unusual and varied that organizers hope they will interest diehard fans as well as those with a casual interest in the theme. The idea for the event came from a discussion between APL director Robbyn Kehoe and library trustee Erin Metzler. They share an interest in the Harry
Potter books and movies and thought that a wizardly themed event would be a good fundraiser for the library as well as a great activity for Atglen. The hope is that this new event will bring a lively spirit to the community. “It just evolved, and people got excited about it,” Metzler said. She noted that the fair will serve two purposes. “First and foremost, it is a fundraising event for the library to help finance our relocation to the center of town. In our bigger, more welcoming location, we hope to be somewhat of a community center, offering expanded programs and resources as well as study and meeting spaces,” Metzler stated. “Equally important, however, is that the festival will be a community and family-oriented event. The library will not be charging admission to the fair and will have several free activities for children.” See Wizard Faire pg 6

Chester County 4-H Program Names New Educator
By Francine Fulton

Although he lives in Ithaca, N.Y., William LaRose will run the Philadelphia Marathon this fall in an effort to raise money for The RADAR Project, a Chester County-based nonprofit organization that supports victims of domestic abuse and sexual violence. LaRose, who recently completed active duty as an officer in the United States Army, has formed the Race for RADAR team, a group of men and women who hope to raise money to allow The RADAR Project to market an app that will allow victims to anonymously report crimes by dropping color-coded pins on a virtual map, marking the locations where the incidents occurred. Currently, incidents of abuse can be reported at www.theradarproject.org.
Logan Hall, who has been involved in 4-H since he was in elementary school, was recently named an extension educator by the Chester County 4-H Youth Development Program. Hall, who started his new job on July 9, grew up in Cumberland County, located near Harrisburg. “4-H has been a part of my life since age 9 or 10,” said Hall. “I started in Cumberland County 4-H Goat Club and then joined the Cumberland Farm Stock Club. I grew up in town, but my aunt had eight acres outside of Carlisle, which is where my agriculture and livestock experience comes from.” During his youth, Hall showed market goats, breeding goats, market hogs, breeding sheep, market sheep and poultry, among other livestock. “We also raised turkeys,” he noted.

4-H Educator from pg 1 Hall continued in 4-H throughout his career at Delaware Valley College in Doylestown. “In the Pennsylvania 4-H youth program, you can (participate) from age 8 to 18. I continued into my freshman year of college,” he recalled. “Then, once I aged out, I started a collegiate chapter. It is very different from a traditional 4-H Club because we don’t carry a project; it was more service-based.” Prior to joining the Chester County staff, Hall was a 4-H youth development educator in the Penn State Extension of Cumberland County office and he served as the deputy communications director, as well as acting communications director, during his tenure at the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture.

To see it in all those little pins you can start feeling you are not completely isolated.” Future plans for the organization include developing a registry of volunteers to help victims. “Say a victim has to show up for court and doesn’t want their family involved. They can go onto the registry and ask if someone can go with them,” Holt explained. In the meantime, LaRose is running several times a week in preparation for the marathon, which will be held on Sunday, Nov. 18. “At most, I run four to five times a week. You start off with low mileage, and each week that goes by you increase,” he said. “You might have three short- to mid-distance runs, and, on the weekend, you do a longer run.” He said he plans to run the upcoming marathon at a steady pace. “When you start off, your body is full of adrenaline, (but) I start slow. If you come out of the gate too fast, you (burn out),” he said. “You try to keep the same pace throughout.” LaRose would like other runners to join him in the Philadelphia Marathon to benefit The RADAR Project. “We have a dozen or so runners on our team,” he added. “They can run the 8K, a half marathon or the full marathon - whatever distance they are comfortable with.” The 8K and half marathon will be held on Saturday, Nov. 17. The RADAR Project through a friend who knew the organization’s co-founder, Leslie Holt. LaRose explained that when he signed up for the marathon, a 26.2-mile race, he had the option of raising funds for a charity, and he selected The RADAR Project. “ When you sign up on the marathon website, you can link it to which charity you choose,” LaRose noted. Holt, who founded The RADAR Project with attorney Meri López in 2013, explained that the map on the website can identify a “hot spot” of illegal activities, such as a college campus. “Police will and are using it,” Holt said. “ We’re hoping the more populated the map gets the clearer the picture will be. Even though it’s anonymous, it gives (law enforcement) a barometer of what is going on.” She said the website aims to empower victims by giving them a place to share their stories. “Every person should have a voice,” said Holt. “When people share their stories, that’s how other people learn. In his new role, Hall joins extension educator Toni Stuetz to provide educational programs and activities for youths throughout Chester County. “The opportunity to work with 4-H in Chester County aligns with my animal science background and it aligns closely with what I enjoy in the program,” he stated. “A lot of the program areas I will handle will be the livestock and equine programs. Just like Toni, I will put together camps for the public to come to and for 4-H members.” Hall recently toured the Romano 4-H Center in Honey Brook for the first time. The 4H Center includes an outdoor riding ring with a full course of jumps, as well as a pole building. The main building has a large conference area, with
restrooms and showers. “It was my first opportunity to see the property,” he said. “It illustrates the dedication people have to the 4-H program in Chester County.” The public is invited to meet Hall and other staff members from the extension office in Chester County during an open house at the Chester County 4-H Fair on Wednesday, Aug. 8, from 4 to 6 p.m. The fair will be held at the Romano 4-H Center, 1841 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322), Honey Brook. The fair will be open to the public from Monday, Aug. 6, through Thursday, Aug. 9, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; on Friday, Aug. 10, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and on Saturday, Aug. 11, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Guided tours and hands-on activities for children will be offered on Tuesday, Aug. 7, beginning at 10 a.m.

Runners will have another option when it comes to stretching their legs and winning prizes this summer. A 5K race and fun run benefiting Solid Rock Youth Ministries will be held on the Enola Low Grade Trail on Saturday, Aug. 18. Day-of registration will open at 7 a.m., and the 5K race will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Fairview Road Trailhead, 520 Fairview Road, New Providence. Runners and walkers will head east toward Atglen before turning around and concluding at the start. A water station will be set up at some point along the trail. Strollers are welcome, but pets will not be permitted. Awards will be given to the top three women and top three men. Every registered participant will be entered in a door prize drawing. The trail will not be closed for the event, but only registered participants wearing race bibs will qualify for prizes. The fun run will be open to children age 10 and younger.
They will run a half-mile beginning at the trailhead, and their race will take place after the 5K concludes. Every registered young runner will receive a wristband. Packet pickup will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 17, at Solid Rock’s youth center, 34 E. State St., Quarryville. Tours of the facility will be available. Planning for the new event has been spearheaded by Mary Price, who felt God’s leading in the endeavor. She suggested the idea to Solid Rock Youth Ministries executive director Raeanne Nixon, who revealed that six months previous, she and board member Abbey White had kicked around and then rejected hosting a race because they did not feel qualified to plan it. Incidentally, Price has never planned a 5K event, but she has participated in numerous races, and her brother has organized many. She also has an enthusiastic team surrounding her. Annamarie Dixon has helped to organize 5K races, and fellow team members Trey and Danielle Little and Matt and Megan Boulden have access
to useful expertise, skills, and resources. Community members have also offered their support, and Price noted that Solanco cross-country coach Craig Ausel will lend his timing equipment for the race. “The main purpose (of the race) is to raise awareness about Solid Rock,” Price said, explaining that she was impacted by videos about the youth organization that were shown at her church. “It would have been a beneficial resource for my family (when I was in school),” she added. During the school year, Solid Rock Youth Ministries offers after-school activities for students in kindergarten through ninth grade, and attendance each week averages about 70. Additionally, summer programs are available for students who will enter first through ninth grades this fall. The organization aims to provide a safe space for children and teenagers to grow in relationships with each other and with Jesus Christ. All activities are offered free of charge so that finances never cause a barrier to participation. “That’s why we’re raising money,” Dixon explained.
“It’s neat to see how the Lord provides,” Nixon added. She shared that the organization would like to expand its offerings to include programs for high school students, and that will necessitate additional funding. Solid Rock also recently hired Corey Alfonso full time as the program director. “As Solid Rock is growing, we had a need to hire additional staff members,” Nixon said. Folks who register by Tuesday, July 31, will be guaranteed an event T-shirt and will receive a discount on the entrance fee. Discounts for groups of five or more people are also available. Race and registration information, as well as sponsorship details and a list of this summer’s programs, may be viewed at www.solidrockquarryville.com. Registration forms may also be obtained at the youth center. Readers with questions may call Solid Rock at 717-786-8007. CYF Staff Members Receive Recognition The Chester County commissioners and the director of the county’s Department of Children Youth & Families (CYF) have announced the statewide recognition of CYF staff members for their efforts to place children eligible for adoption into permanent loving homes. At this year’s Pennsylvania Department of Human Services Adoption and Permanency Conference, Shadell Quinones, manager of the CYF Adoption Unit, was awarded Permanency Professional of the Year for her commitment to finding permanent homes for children through adoption. Quinones has been a part of Chester County’s CYF team for 18 years. In addition to adoption and post-adoption support, she
heads the National Adoption Day program for the county every year. CYF supervisor Kristin Terrell and caseworker Briana Stinson were part of a group that was awarded the Permanency Teamwork recognition for their collaborative effort to promote permanent homes for children with special needs. The team’s efforts to find a “forever family” for a 16 year-old Chester County youth who had been in foster care in many different locations for many years were noted as exceptional. Quinones, Terrell, and Stinson were recognized at the recent Chester County commissioners’ Sunshine Meeting, where the commissioners also presented a Child Welfare Professionals Appreciation Month
proclamation to Doug Waegel, director of the Chester County Department of Children Youth & Families. In the proclamation, the commissioners noted the efforts of the county’s child welfare staff members, who work to intervene and protect children who are at risk of abuse and neglect and who work with families who are in crisis.

Local libraries are keeping learning alive throughout summer vacation time with Science in the Summer. This year, the popular program, themed “The Science of Space,” aims to help children learn more about the sky above them. “I think it’s fun to learn in the summer to keep my brain educated for the next year,” said 10-year-old Jill Chase, who recently took part in Science in the Summer at the Oxford Public Library. Both Jill and her brother took the classes this year. “Every summer we do this. It’s a great free program, sponsored by the Franklin Institute, that allows students to get a little more exposure to some science curriculum,” said Jill’s mother, Nancy Chase. Science in the Summer has been a popular fixture in the suburban Philadelphia area since 1986 and is sponsored by a global pharmaceutical company. The Franklin Institute has been a partner and administrator of the program

since 2012. Area libraries serve as host sites, providing a location and volunteer support for the weeklong experience. The free program includes four days of classes divided by age group. Level One students, who will be entering second or third grade in the fall, enjoy hands-on learning targeted to their age range, while Level Two students, entering fourth through sixth grades, explore the same topics in greater depth. The program is an exciting week for students, with classes taught by experienced, certified teachers such as Joe Korzec, who recently retired from teaching seventh-grade science at Springton Lake Middle School. “I’ve been doing Science in the Summer coming up on 15 years,” he said. “It prevents summer slide to a degree. From the time (students) leave school in June until the time they go back in September, there’s a lot lost in between. (Through Science in the Summer), they get to refresh their memories, shake those neurons together and
put together some good thoughts.” One of the major attractions of Science in the Summer is that children learn through active, hands-on experience. In “The Science of Space” curriculum, students explore the sun’s energy, the phases of the moon, human survival in space and how rockets overcome Earth’s gravity. “We change the topic every year. The Franklin Institute has brought some new topics in. Last year was ‘Science of Sports,’” said Korzec. “I think it’s a nice roundabout way for the kids to see areas they may not learn in school. I imagine the topic will tickle many of their fancies.” Science in the Summer was offered July 9 through 12 by the Oxford, Parkesburg and Atglen libraries. The program is scheduled to be held at the Avon Grove Library from July 23 through Thursday, July 26. “It’s an honor to come to the libraries. They treat us really well,” Korzec added. Pictured on front: Joe Korzec (right) is one of the teachers leading Science in the Summer programs at local libraries this summer.

The annual disaster relief golf tournament sponsored by Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren will be held on Friday, Aug. 3, at Pilgrim’s Oak Golf Course, 1107 Pilgrims Pathway, Peach Bottom. The four-person scramble-format outing will have starting times at 7:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The cost to participate will include green fees, cart rental, snacks, prizes, and dinner prepared by church members.
The tournament was started by Stanley Kreider, who had a vision to raise funds to help victims of natural disasters. With $10 in seed money from the Brethren Disaster Relief Auction Inc., Kreider partnered with Earle Hershey to host the first golf outing in 1994. Now, 24 years later, Kreider’s vision and Hershey’s leadership have resulted in the collection of more than $255,000 to assist those who have been affected by natural disasters. All proceeds from the tournament support disaster relief locally and around the world. The Brethren Disaster Relief Auction is held annually on the fourth weekend of September at the Lebanon Expo and Fairgrounds, 80 Rocherty Road, Lebanon. This year, the event will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 21, and from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22. Setup will begin at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 20. The three-day effort raises money for victims of natural and manmade disasters. The event is supported by the Atlantic Northeast and Southern Pennsylvania districts of the Church of the Brethren, which represent more than 130 congregations. According to www.brethrendisasterreliefauction.org, the proceeds from the auction support Brethren Disaster Ministries and Children’s Disaster Services, which are programs of the Church of the Brethren. Folks who would like to participate in or sponsor the Aug. 3 golf tournament may call Hershey at 717-951-9147 or Linda Bledsoe at 717-341-2115.

Information About Alzheimer’s Shared Aging is associated with a host of mental and physical side effects. For example, many adults expect their vision to deteriorate as they grow older. Such a side effect can be combatted with routine eye examinations that may indicate a need for a stronger eyeglass prescription, a relatively simple solution that will not impact adults’ daily lives much at all.
While physical side effects like diminished vision might not strike much fear in the hearts of aging men and women, those same people may be concerned and/or frightened by the notion of age-related cognitive decline. Some immediately associate such decline with Alzheimer’s disease, an irreversible, progressive brain disorder that gradually destroys memory and
cognitive skills, ultimately compromising a person’s ability to perform even the simplest of tasks. But age-related cognitive decline is not always symptomatic of Alzheimer’s disease. Learning about Alzheimer’s and how to maintain mental acuity can help aging men and women better understand the changes their brains might be undergoing as they near

or pass retirement age. The National Institute on Aging notes that only a very rare form of Alzheimer’s disease is inherited. Early-onset familial Alzheimer’s disease, or FAD, is caused by mutations in certain genes. If these genes are passed down from parent to child, then the child is likely, but not certain, to get FAD. So while many adults may be concerned about Alzheimer’s because one of their parents had the disease, the NIA notes that the majority of Alzheimer’s cases are late-onset, which has no obvious family pattern. Studies of Alzheimer’s disease are ongoing, but to date there is no definitive way to prevent the onset of the disease. Although researchers have not yet determined a way to prevent Alzheimer’s disease, adults can take certain steps to maintain their mental acuity into retirement. Routine exercise may be most associated with physical benefits, but the NIA notes that such activity has been linked to benefits for the brain as well. For example, a 2011 study published in the journal “Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America” found that aerobic exercise training increases the size of the hippocampus, leading to improvements in spatial memory. The NIA also notes that one study indicated exercise stimulated the brain’s ability to maintain old network connections and make new ones vital to cognitive health. Avid readers may be happy to learn that one of their favorite pastimes can improve the efficiency of their cognitive systems while delaying such systems’ decline. A 2013 study published in the journal “Neurology” by researchers at Chicago’s Rush University Medical Center PLACE YOUR CLASSIFIED AD ONLINE AT WWW.EPCCLASSIFIEDS.COM found that mentally active lifestyles may not prevent the formations of plaques and tangles associated with Alzheimer’s disease, but such lifestyles decreases the likelihood that the presence of plaques or tan- FINANCIAL ADVANCE FEE LOANS OR CREDIT OFFERS. The AVMA says that periodontal disease is the most common dental condition in dogs and cats, and by the time the animal reaches three years of age, it may have some early evidence of periodontal disease, which can only worsen if preventative measures are not taken. Pet dental problems are similar to those that occur in people. While dental caries (cavities) are less likely, abscesses, infections, broken teeth, and palate defects can occur. Signs of potential oral problems include bad breath, abnormal chewing, disinterest in eating, swelling in the gums, tenderness when the mouth is touched, or bleeding. Pets may become irritable if their mouths are bothering them, so if behavior changes are observed, dogs or cats should be seen by a veterinarian to find out if a dental issue is at the root of the problem. Some pet owners are reticent to handle oral health care for their companion animals because they fear the pet may bite if uncomfortable. Although this is always a possibility, dogs and cats can grow accustomed to teeth being brushed or wiped with patience, says AVDC. Oral rinses and special chews also can reduce plaque formation. Dental health is an important component of responsible pet ownership. Home oral hygiene and professional cleanings and examinations can help pets remain healthy.
