approximately 10 p.m. Admission is free, and all are invited to attend. The silent auction will feature many products and services donated by local residents and businesses. “In our silent auction we have entries to many museums,” said Amy Pippin, who is co-chairing the auction with Payton Barber. “In the live auction we will have mushrooms, wheat straw, mums, pumpkins, (gift certificates for) riding lessons and fox hunting and much more. Someone also donated a triangular shawl loom for the live auction and a spinning wheel with wool to get started.” She noted that 4-H club members donate items they have gathered or made for gift baskets. For example, there will be an equine basket with horse grooming items. Pippin noted that 4-H youths will provide assistance at the auction, serving as runners and helping display items for auctioneer Bill McCauley. Food will also be available for purchase throughout the event, and offerings will include a dairy cart selling milkshakes and ice cream. “We will also have chicken sandwiches and pulled pork sandwiches and mac and cheese,” Pippin said, noting that a diner in southern Chester County will prepare the food. There will also be a cash-and-carry table where people can purchase donated items directly to take home. “We started this last year for random items that did not fit into the live or silent auction,” Pippin explained. “Last year we had a lot of antique items and some books.” She noted that only cash will be accepted for food sales and for the cash-and-carry table. Bidders will be

able to purchase auction items with cash or credit cards. Organizers are seeking donations for the auction. “We are asking for donations of any kind,” said Pippin. “Past donations have included services, handmade items, antiques, gift certificates, farm products, collectibles, artwork, used and new equipment and tools.” Donations may be dropped off at the Romano Center on Wednesday, Sept. 19, through Friday, Sept. 21, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and on Sept. 22 from 9 a.m. to noon. Proceeds from the auction will be used to help support the cost of upkeep and maintaining the 4-H Center, which gives 4-H clubs a place to meet for free. “We have about five clubs a week that meet there. We also have the 4-H Fair there,” said Pippin. According to Pippin, the 4-H auction used to be held at the former Tabas Hotel in Downingtown. When a pole barn was built in 1996 at the Romano Center site, the auction was relocated. Now, it is held in the center’s new addition, which was built in 2010. “I was in the original group of 4-Hers who did fundraising for the new 4-H building,” Pippin recalled. The center’s new addition contains restroom facilities and meeting rooms, as well as a large exhibition and activity area. For more information about the 4-H auction, readers may call the Chester County Extension Office at 610-696-3500. Singers Sought For Community Chorus By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Southern Lancaster County (SLC) Community Choirs will host a community Christmas concert on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 7 p.m. at Solanco High School, 585 Solanco Road, Quarryville. While readers are welcome to put the event on their calendars, director Rebecca Hess is announcing the performance several months in advance because she is recruiting vocalists to be part of the choirs that will perform that night. “Singers are invited from the Solanco community and beyond,” Hess said.
“The mass choir will include singers in grade nine through adult, while a children’s choir will involve students in grades four through eight.” Hess noted that interested singers should be able to read music or learn parts on their own with the assistance of rehearsal tracks, which will be provided. There will be a number of rehearsals, the dates of which are being confirmed. There is a cost to participate, but part of the fee will be refunded after the sheet music is returned following the concert. The deadline to register to participate in one of the
choirs is Monday, Oct. 1. The SLC Community Choirs groups will be joined in the concert by the Solanco High School jazz band and chorale. Tickets for admission will go on sale closer to the event. All proceeds from the event will support the Solanco Education Foundation (SEF), which funds numerous teacher grants and student scholarships each year. Hess related that her children attend fifth grade and kindergarten at Solanco schools, and she teaches private piano and voice lessons to families in the district. As a result, she is aware of the foundation
and the work it does. Hess noted that the choirs have hosted community events to fund two $2,000 scholarships, but the logistics are challenging. “We decided, why reinvent the wheel?” she said. “SEF is funding and awarding lots of grants and scholarships, so let’s combine our efforts with theirs. If our concert can help a few additional teachers and/or graduating seniors, it (will be) well worth the effort.” For more information about the community Christmas concert or to register for one of the choirs, readers may email Hess at singaloud@comcast.net.

The event is envisioned as a masquerade party, and everyone is encouraged to wear a mask. People may bring their own, or masks may be purchased at the door. “We wanted a unique theme that was different - an adult theme that could be just fun and entertaining,” said organizing chairperson Emily Reid. “This is our big fundraiser for this year. It’s open to the whole community; it’s not just a church function.” Each year, parish volunteers organize a different type of fundraiser to help contribute to operating costs. This year the masquerade party and dance will have an additional beneficiary, as a portion of each ticket sold will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. In conjunction with that cause, cancer survivors will be recognized, and those who have died will be remembered at the event. Survivors will receive a special mask and recognition at the party. To be included, readers may contact Jenny Reece at vieve29@gmail.com. Tickets for the Masquerade Benefit Party and Dance may be purchased at www.olc-fundraising.org or at the door. Tickets are also available at the parish rectory, 603 W. Second Ave., Parkesburg, on Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to
3 p.m. Cocktail-type attire is suggested for the event. Those who are interested in sponsoring the event may contact Sandy Hodorvoich at 484-716-3192 or shodorovich5@ comcast.net. Our Lady of Consolation Parish encompasses three worship sites. The home church is Our Lady of Consolation in the borough of Parkesburg. Worship is held there at 5 p.m. on Saturdays, at 8 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. (Spanish-speaking Mass) on Sundays and at 8:30 a.m. on Mondays through Fridays. St. Malachi’s, located at 76 St. Malachi Road in Cochranville (Londonderry Township), is also part of the parish. Worship is held there on Sundays at 9:30 a.m. The Rev. George P. Schneider Parish Center, named for a former pastor, is home to the Early Learning Center, where adult and youth religious education programs take place. It also serves as the worship site at 11 a.m. on Sundays from September through May. The parish center is located in West Sadsbury Township, just west of Parkesburg. More information about the parish is available by calling 610-857-3510 or visiting www.olcchurch.org or www.face book.com/olcchurch.

The show will consist of works by Scott Rineer, who took up the hobby of bead work as a 13-year-old in Lancaster County. A few years later, he got involved with the Black Powder Rendezvous Living History
Organization, which led to his interest in Native American arts. He works with all tribes and areas and uses all mediums, including feathers. Rineer spends as many as 200 hours counting beads for one item.

As the busy back-to-school season sets in, sun protection may slip down the list of health and wellness priorities. But harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays are present year-round, and one study notes that children sustain a significant amount of sun exposure at school. About 23 percent of lifetime UV exposure occurs before the age of 18, and this exposure can have far-reaching effects. Sun damage is cumulative, so sun exposure during childhood can contribute to skin cancer risk later in life. The best way to mitigate that risk is to educate young children on effective sun protection, instilling healthy habits that will last a lifetime. Children should understand that summer vacation is not the only time they are exposed to the sun’s rays. The Skin Cancer Foundation offers several recommendations for keeping children sun-safe during the school year. UV rays are most intense from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and this is when students are usually outside for recess, physical education class, and after-school sports. Parents should check with the school to see if there are adequate places for students to seek shade during outdoor activities. Shade can be provided by gazebos and roof structures, awnings, shade sails, and natural shade, such as thickly leaved trees. Clothing is the single most effective form of sun protection for the body, children should be sent to school in densely woven and brightor dark-colored fabrics, which offer the best defense. The more skin that is covered, the better, so long sleeves and long pants should be chosen whenever possible. Children should be sent to school with a wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses to protect their face, neck, and eyes. If a child will not wear a widebrimmed hat, a baseball cap is better than nothing. Sunscreen should be part of the morning routine. At least 30 minutes before children go outside, parents should apply a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF 30 or higher to their skin. Older children should learn to apply sunscreen themselves and make it a routine habit. To remain effective, sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating. At a minimum, remind children to reapply sunscreen before after school sports and outdoor activities. One ounce of sunscreen (about the size of a golf ball) should be applied to the entire body. Parents should remind children to cover those easy to miss spots, such as the back of ears and neck, as well as the tops of the feet and hands. There is a chance a school does not allow students to use sunscreen or wear a hat outdoors during the school day without written permission from a physician. If that is the case, The Skin Cancer Foundation has created a sun protection permission form that parents and doctors can sign, allowing students to bring these items to school to apply and use as needed. The form is available at www.skincancer.org/schoolnote.
