“We try to live out the parable of the Good Samaritan. We recognize people … who are hurting and suffering in our communities. We meet them where they’re at, and we respond with generosity and compassion,” said Nate Hoffer, chief executive officer of Good Samaritan Services, when he spoke recently at a meeting of the New Holland Area Kiwanis Club. Good Samaritan, with locations in Ephrata, Lancaster, Coatesville, and Phoenixville, was founded as the Good Samaritan Shelter in 2002 when several Phoenixville-area churches joined forces to help area residents who were struggling, especially with housing. The Ephrata location provides an 8,000-square-foot homeless shelter to as many as 35 women and children per day. The Phoenixville shelter for single men can also house 35. The Lancaster and Coatesville offices focus on permanent housing. “Our staff (in those offices) help single mothers stay in their (homes),” explained Hoffer. “Our

program will step in with rental assistance to keep (a mother and) her children in housing to prevent them from having to come to the shelter.” Hoffer added that the process of being uprooted and moved to a shelter is especially difficult on children, who may struggle with poor academic performance and even health issues related to homelessness. Hoffer noted that Good Samaritan may spend up to $9,000 per month in rental assistance helping people stay in their homes, translating to serving up to 65 children each day through its programs. According to Hoffer, the Good Samaritan model utilizes a holistic approach that includes financial assistance, professional social workers, and mentor volunteers from local churches to surround a single mother with support. “We do weekly budgeting, life coaching, and mentoring (with our clients),” said Hoffer, who added that the children the organization serves receive help as well. “We help children learn to read and write,” he said. “We focus on building the literacy skills to give (children) the tools they need to succeed.” The Ephrata shelter can accommodate a woman and her children from six months up to two years, giving the family the time necessary to secure affordable housing. Hoffer added that unfortunately about 60 to 70 percent of the families living in the shelter have fled abusive situations. “Domestic violence is the third leading cause of homelessness among women nationally,” said Hoffer, who added that Good Samaritan receives referrals from local churches that appreciate the shelter because it is safe, secure, and staffed by

professional social workers. Good Samaritan Services is a private, nonprofit, faith-based organization that is fully dependent on the community for support. “It costs $23 per day per person to provide shelter, food, supplies, and case management services,” said Hoffer. “We pride ourselves on being efficient.” Hoffer noted that the organization applies for grants and holds several yearly fundraising events. “About 25 percent comes from grants and about 25 percent from fundraising,” he stated. Adding lighthearted moments into the lives of those it serves is also a goal of Good Samaritan. “We try to have fun,” said Hoffer. “We hold a Christmas party, and once a year, we visit a miniature horse farm to take the (children and their mothers) for an outing,” added Hoffer, who lauded an Ephrata bakery that provides birthday parties for the children at the shelter. Hoffer noted that one of the most valuable resources Good Samaritan can give to its clients is time. “We have professional social workers to help clients achieve their goals, but that takes time,” said Hoffer. “There are often a number of issues (involved) that can’t be fixed in a week. We give people the gift of time.” Readers who would like to know more about Good Samaritan Services may visit www.goodsamservices.org.

which will also feature a Kidz Zone, will be held rain or shine. At the event, participants may walk a route around the park or pull in a tug-of-war competition. People may raise money as individuals or teams by getting sponsors. “The purpose of our Walk and Pull for Life is not only a fundraiser, it is a time to take a stand for life,” said Cornerstone executive director Debbie Davenport. “Whether you are walking or pulling at this event, you show your support for life in a family-oriented, fun way.” The walk will begin at 8:30 a.m. and will make roughly three laps on the walking trail at the park. The Pull for Life tug-of-war competition will follow the walk, with teams of five matching their strength against each other for the honor of taking home the grand prize trophy. “They pull for dear life. It is a lot of fun (and) it takes a lot of strength, so we are looking for strong men (and women) from the community, from churches and businesses - people who just want to come with a team of five and show their strength and pull for life,” development assistant Mary Wilson said. “Whoever the team is who wins, they get this enormous trophy they can keep for one year. Their name plate gets put on it,” Davenport added. Pulling teams may represent a business, a church group or other organization, or they may be teams of friends or families. Pull teams will be asked to pay a registration fee; walkers can walk for free but are encouraged to get individual sponsorships. As an incentive, individuals and teams that reach fundraising goals will have a chance to win gift cards. Music will be ongoing all morning, and there will be a chance to purchase T-shirts at the registration for the walk.

Starting at 10:30 a.m., children will be able to enjoy the Kidz Zone, which will include barrel train rides, face painting and balloon sculptor Mr. Pops. “He sculpts all kinds of balloons into animal sculptures. He’s also a great storyteller,” Wilson said. “Everything that we are offering for the families that day is 100 percent free. This is a fun-filled family day, and the Gap Park is a wonderful place to come out for the day.” Walking and pulling can build up an appetite, which can be easily satisfied with a chicken barbecue lunch that day. Half-chickens will be available from 10:30 a.m. to noon only. Chicken will be available on its own or as a meal with a roll and butter, chips, a beverage, applesauce and a cookie. Proceeds from the day will support Pregnancy Resources at Cornerstone, a nonprofit ministry that offers pregnancy testing, limited ultrasound to confirm a viable pregnancy, decision-making counseling, prenatal and childbirth education classes, parenting classes and healthy lifestyle education classes. The organization also has certified trainers who make sexual risk avoidance education programs available to schools and youth groups on request. “We obviously minister to women, but also to men and to families,” board member Jim Davis said. One of the newest additions to Cornerstone programming is a dating violence program. “Young girls and young boys are getting caught up in dating violence and not recognizing the danger signs, so we want parents and teens to be equipped,” Davenport said. For more information and to register, readers may call Pregnancy Resources at Cornerstone at 717-442-8694, visit www.pregnancyresources.org or search for “Pregnancy Resources at Cornerstone” on Facebook and choose “Events.”

Encounter Church, 300 Hideaway Drive, Quarryville, will host its annual “World of Wheels” car show on Saturday, Sept. 29, from 4 to 7 p.m. Vehicles for display may arrive after 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, has been set as the rain date. “It’s been a fun event for five years now,” said pastor Stuart Osborne. “We had a nice turnout last year,” added coordinator Jerry Bandy, reporting that about 75 vehicles were exhibited, including several motorcycles and a vintage semi-truck that a man from Ephrata used to start his trucking business a number of decades ago. There are no restrictions on entries. “It’s open to pretty much any vehicle, from vintage cars to diesel trucks. Any modified vehicle that anybody wants to show off, they can come hang out,” Bandy said. In addition to the vehicles, the event will feature music and refreshments, which have included burgers, hot dogs, and desserts in previous years. A prayer station will be set up for folks to pray or talk with a compassionate listener. There will be no cost for any part of the event,
