OARA To Present Haunted Park And Hayride Three nights of fun and scares are planned for the third annual Haunted Park and Hayride at the Oxford Area Regional Park, 900 W. Locust St., Oxford. The event is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 18; Friday, Oct. 19; and Saturday, Oct. 20, from 6:30 to 10 p.m. each evening. Organized by the Oxford Area Recreation Authority (OARA), the Haunted Park is a major fundraiser for the park as well as a fun event for the community. A tractor-drawn hayride will lead visitors to the corners of the park, which will be “spookified” for the event. Each year the event is revised so there are sure to be new scares. This year, younger children will enjoy a familyfriendly version of the hayride on Oct. 18 from 6:30 to 8 p.m., with the first two hayrides out on Oct. 19 and 20 also being family-friendly. After that, the adult-level

frights will begin, which may not be appropriate for small children. New this year, several local businesses will be participating in the event, with displays on the park’s multipurpose field. As a special attraction Oct. 19 only, there will be a display of hearses. Each night, sword swallower David Peyre-Ferry will entertain crowds periodically at the park pavilion as they wait for or return from the hayride. In a change from previous years, no food trucks will be at the event. No pets or alcohol will be permitted. No rain dates are set for the event. In the case of questionable weather, readers may check www.facebook.com/Rec Authority for updates and information. Those who like, share or comment on Facebook will have a chance to receive two free tickets. See Haunted Park pg 5

Each year, millions of young children in impoverished countries receive shoeboxes full of gifts thanks to Operation Christmas Child (OCC), a program of the Samaritan’s Purse ministry. The local community had an opportunity to meet Jaki Steward, a former shoebox recipient, during a program presented on Oct. 6 at Gateway Church in Parkesburg. The program was hosted by Amy and Will Shaw of Chester Springs, who are the OCC area coordinators for the Greater Philadelphia Area Team, which includes Chester and Delaware counties. Steward, 23, explained that when she was only a few months old she was left at an orphanage in Guatemala by her young mother. During Steward’s

Church, Media Mennonite Church in Oxford and Andrews Bridge Christian Fellowship in Christiana are all members of AMEC and among the founding members of the organization, which now includes 28 churches in the Northeast and some in Oklahoma. A conference of member churches is held every other year, with this year’s activities in Lancaster and Chester counties. Johnson is the current president of AMEC, and Andrews Bridge Christian Fellowship pastor Vernon Myers is one of the founders of the organization. “ What draws us together within AMEC is a focus on living biblically, and we come out of an Anabaptist faith and subscribe to those values,” Johnson said. “Our churches share doctrinal and biblical convictions, but we are quite diverse in our styles and the ways we sing and worship at our worship services.” The conference will begin on Oct. 19 with evening worship at 7 p.m., followed by a time for refreshments and fellowship. The featured speaker for the service will be James Ehrman, dean and assistant professor of leadership and culture at Evangelical Seminary, Myerstown. Oct. 20 will have a full schedule of events, starting with activities and a program for children from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The event, designed for children of elementary school age and younger, will include a performance by local musician Bruce Fite. Worship services will be held at 8:30 a.m. with Mark Hager speaking. There will be a second worship service that evening at 7 p.m. with a testimony by Tefera Bekere and a message by Ehrman. On Oct. 20, youths and adults have an opportunity to hear the featured presentation by Piercing Word. “We’re excited that Piercing Word is going to be sharing with us,” Johnson said. “Piercing Word is an organization that memorizes Scripture, and they present it dramatically and with great effect. They do large passages of memorized Scripture with a whole team of folks who give voice to the different characters.” Following the Piercing Word performance will be an assortment of workshops and activities. “It really is a weekend where everyone is invited,” Mount Vernon Christian Church pastor Mervin Charles said. The conference will conclude with a Sunday worship service on Oct. 21 at 10:15 a.m. with Charles as worship leader and with messages by Myers as well as Dean Landry of Indian Valley Faith Fellowship in Harleysville. Worship will be followed by a fellowship lunch at noon. Advance registration, particularly for the youth programs, is suggested but not required. Shoebox Gifts from pg 1 She said that one of the worst parts of the experience was sharing a toothbrush with 10 other girls. “At night, we lined up and passed that brush down the line,” she noted. “Most of the time, we just used water (to brush), or occasionally, we brushed with soap.” She said her favorite memories of living in the orphanage were when American missionaries came to visit. “They came to spend time with us and they gave us hugs, and my favorite part was the candy they would bring us,” she said. “I loved how special they made us feel, and we got to eat something besides beans and rice, which is what we ate every day. When the missionaries came, we got spaghetti or pizza.” Steward recalled the day that she received her shoebox gift from OCC. “One day we were called into a big room, and I remember sitting there waiting to see what was going to happen,” she said. “As we looked around the room, we saw these boxes and then (volunteers) started handing them out. Every one of us was getting a gift. For a lot of us, we had never gotten a gift before. “Inside my box there were crayons and a stuffed animal, but my most favorite gift was getting my own toothbrush,” she added. “I knew that I didn’t

have to share anymore.” Steward’s story also helps to illustrate why toothpaste is no longer allowed to be included in an OCC shoebox. “As I continued to dig further into my shoebox, I spotted a tube of something and I tasted it. I figured it was a type of American candy that I never had before, and I ate the whole thing,” Steward said. “They explained to me (later) that it was toothpaste.” Steward noted that the small gifts brought the children hours of joy. “The boys loved their soccer balls and their toy cars and their marbles. We played with marbles by the hour in the dirt,” she remarked. “ We colored every page in the books.” She also noted that letters, photos and cards from the families that filled the shoeboxes were also priceless. “A stranger had taken the time to pack this gift for me and they didn’t even know me,” she added. At the age of 6, Steward was adopted by an American family and two years later her parents adopted a boy from the same orphanage. Today, Steward is recently married and lives in Maryland. Three years ago she became a national speaker for OCC. “It’s been so much fun, but my favorite part is meeting the amazing volunteers behind the ministry. Without (the volunteers), there wouldn’t be stories

Jaki Steward spoke about receiving a shoebox gift from Operation Christmas Child during a program at Gateway Church in Parkesburg. Information was also available at the event about National Collection Week, which will take place Nov. 12 through 19. like mine,” she stated. Prior to Steward’s talk, the Shaws conducted a trivia contest about OCC, giving prizes to the those who came up with the correct answers. They reported that the OCC program, now in its 25th year, has distributed 157 million shoeboxes since its inception. For those who would like to donate a shoebox, National Collection Week will be held from Monday, Nov. 12, through Monday, Nov. 19. Many local churches will accept shoebox gifts during that week. For more information, including drop-off locations, readers may email occphilly@aol.com or search for “OCC Greater Philadelphia Area Team” on Facebook. Jenner’s Pond Sets Arts And Crafts Festival Jenner’s Pond Retirement Community, 2000 Greenbriar Lane, West Grove, will hold its 14th annual arts and crafts festival on Saturday, Oct. 20, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. More than 45 craftspeople from Pennsylvania and surrounding states will sell their creations in the interior public areas of the Alison Community Center. All items being sold are handcrafted and include jewelry, paintings, home décor, woodcrafts, needlework, Christmas décor, pottery, and more. A new craftsman this year will be Michael Elliott of North East, Md. As a former restoration carpenter, Elliott uses a lathe and specialized wood or acrylics to create hand-turned pens and other fine writing implements as well as hand tools such as pizza

cutters, back scratchers, and hand-held functional art items. Another new artist is Elaine Biancaniello of West Grove, who creates leather camels which are decorated for various seasons. In addition to the craft sale, a giant used book sale as well as a bake sale and free face painting will be featured. There will also be a prize drawing table where attendees will have an opportunity to win quilts, crafts, gift cards to local restaurants and shops and other items. The public is invited to attend. Admission and parking are free, and the Cattail Café will be open for lunch. All proceeds will benefit Jenner’s Pond Benevolent Care Fund. “I think we have a good variety of things for everybody,” remarked Melissa Kreider, vendor coordinator for the annual craft show hosted by the Believers Sunday school class of Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren. For this year’s event, set for Saturday, Oct. 27, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church, 1392 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville, Kreider cut back on the number of direct sales representatives in response to shopper feedback. Instead, the event will focus on unique and handcrafted items. All 40 vendor slots are full, and Kreider is not accepting inquiries about spaces. “Our craft show fills up over the summer,” observed Kari Johnson, Believers member and marketing coordinator for the event. This year’s craft show will feature laser-engraved and scrollworked wooden items, dog treats, fall and Christmas décor, quillows and tote bags, copper

flowers, ceramics, candles, jewelry, floral arrangements and potpourri, hand-painted and chalkboard signs, stationery, metal art and rag bags, flannel scarves, felted bowls, rubber-stamping items, Haitian tinware, and a variety of baked goods, including sandtarts. The Mechanic Grove Painting Group will sell artwork. The Women’s Fellowship will sell apple dumplings, and hot breakfast foods will also be available. Soup, salad, and sandwiches will be sold at lunchtime. Grilled cheese sandwiches have been added to this year’s menu, and a soup-and-sandwich combo will be offered. Folks may choose from chicken corn noodle, broccoli cheddar, and tomato bisque. Tables will be set up so customers may enjoy their refreshments, and high chairs will be available. “We’re very family friendly,” Kreider remarked. She noted that the venue is all on one level and is wheelchair- and strolleraccessible as well. The proceeds from the craft

show will be used by the Sunday school class to pay for the community meals the group serves at Huffnagle Park in Quarryville during the summer. “Our money helps people,” Kreider said. For more information about the craft show, readers may email craftfair@mgcb.org or visit www.facebook.com/MGCBfall craftshow/. An event page has been linked from the Facebook page, and vendors are posting pictures of items they will sell at the craft show. Local workforce development boards can apply for $2.5 million in Business-Education Partnership (BEP) grants that will connect businesses and school districts in an effort to expand career opportunities across Pennsylvania. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, Oct. 31. The funding is available through the Department of Labor and Industry to local workforce development boards, which are regional entities that direct federal, state, and local funding to workforce development programs in their areas. Kristina Borham of Oxford, a third-year medical student at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine (GCSOM), first became interested in the subject of human trafficking when she worked on a donation drive to support Free the Girls, an organization that aims to encourage and empower women freed from sex trafficking. Following that experience, Borham attending two trainings on sex trafficking with the American Medical Women’s Association’s (AMWA) Physicians Against the Trafficking of Humans. Borham felt that other medical students needed education on the topic, so she recently implemented and delivered a curriculum on human trafficking to secondyear medical students at GCSOM. Borham taught the subject matter during the students’ Art and Practice of Medicine (APM) class.

SALT Performing Arts, a nonprofit theater group, will present the Tony Award-winning musical “Cats,” featuring music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, at its theater in the West Pikeland Township Building, 1645 Art School Road, Chester Springs. Performances dates and times include the following: Fridays, Oct. 19 and 26 and Nov. 2, from 7 to 9 p.m.; Saturdays, Oct. 20 and 27 and Nov. 3, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m.; and Sundays, Oct. 21 and 28 and Nov. 4, from 2 to 4 p.m. Based on T. S. Eliot’s 1939 anthology “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats,” “Cats” is one of the longest-running shows in Broadway history. Set in a junkyard playground, the musical is about the Jellicle Cats, all with their own distinct personalities, who come out to play on one special night of the year - the night of the Jellicle Ball. The cats include the Rum Tum Tugger, Mr. Mistoffelees, Macavity, Jennyanydots, Skimbleshanks and Grizabella, among others. One by one they tell their stories to Old Deuteronomy, their leader, who must choose one of the cats to ascend to the Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new life. Judy Elliott, SALT marketing director, said that audiences will enjoy the set, the choreography

and the music, which includes the popular song “Memory.” The costumes and makeup are also elaborate. “My daughter, Hannah, who is in the ensemble, and her friend Celia asked if they could do the makeup, and Lauren (McComas, producer) said yes. They researched and drew pictures of the makeup for each cat,” Elliott explained. “It’s a lot of work and a lot of makeup. The cast wears body suits, and the wigs and tails are made of yarn.” She said that the cast members had to learn to be “cat-like” in their movements during musical numbers, as well as when they are not actively involved in the dialogue. “Everyone has to act like cats and twirl their tails,” she said. “(The play is) very danceoriented. We have gymnasts and dancers and people who can sing really well.” Elliott noted that a sneak preview of “Cats” was offered by several cast members during the Eagleview Fall Fest held on Oct. 8 in the Eagleview Town Center. In addition to the director, Renee Chambers-Liciaga, who has Broadway experience, the crew includes: Lauren McComas (producer), Elizabeth Tozer (stage manager), Brooke Spinelli (costumes), Hannah Elliott and Celia Hernandez (makeup), Chelsea Barnett (assistant stage manager), Rob Merow (tech director/set designer) and Mike

For Jeremy Leaman, founder and director of Ten Million for Christ, who grew up on a farm south of Strasburg, the invitation to lead a Youth Evangelism Service (YES) team to Romania as part of Eastern Mennonite Missions became a life-changing opportunity. “From the spring of 1993 to the summer of 1994, (our team) worked with churches there, said Jeremy, whose team started a Christian student movement and a church during the 15-month outreach. “I fell in love with the people, the culture, the language, the food, and the beauty of the countryside. In the fall of 2000, Jeremy returned to Romania, and he fell in love again. “That’s when I fell in love with my wife, Gabriella, explained Jeremy, noting that Gabriella is from Galati. The couple married in 2001 and returned to the United States to raise their children, but in the last few years, the Leamans felt God nudging them to return to Romania. “We want to impact Romania now, said Jeremy. “(Beginning Ten Million for Christ) will allow us to go back to Romania with a focus of bringing people to Christ. Our vision is to see ten million new believers come to faith in Romania and throughout Eastern Europe. With that goal in mind, the Leamans are working with their team to organize a flag football tournament and chicken barbecue to be held at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland, on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. The event will kick off at 8:30 a.m., and the first game will start at 9 a.m. The play will be six-on-six flag football, and players must be 16 and older to register. The top three teams will receive prizes, and all players will

Jeremy Leaman, director of Ten Million for Christ, played football with one of the boys from House of Hope in Romania during a recent visit. The organization will hold a fundraising flag football tournament and chicken barbecue at Petra Church in New Holland on Nov. 3. receive a T-shirt and lunch. Players are invited to bring their families to enjoy the game. Both chicken barbecue meals and chicken only will be available for purchase. Since late 2016, the Leamans have been working to build the foundation of their organization. “Ten Million for Christ was birthed from (our) passion for Romania and Eastern Europe, said Jeremy, who launched the organization in 2017 with help from friends in Lancaster County. The Leamans moved to Florida to take part in a discipleship training school with Youth With a Mission and completed an outreach in Romania with their four children. The organization is overseen by a six-member board, with Keith Yoder from Teaching the Word in Leola serving as chair. Jeremy noted that the ministry hopes to form partnerships with local churches in Romania and Eastern Europe and work with them toward impacting communities for Christ. “Our uniqueness is that one of our goals is to place coaches, consultants, and chaplains into businesses to build a platform to share the Gospel, Jeremy explained. “We hope to have an influence among business leaders and those who are (still new) to the job and trying to figure out their place. Through this strategy, Jeremy hopes to create jobs for business coaches. Over the summer, the Leamans and their children spent

nearly three weeks in Romania serving in Cluj-Napoca. “We are hoping to form a collaboration with a church in that area to impact (Cluj-Napoca) for Christ, said Jeremy. “That is our big goal for the end of the year. The idea for a flag football fundraiser grew out of Jeremy’s love of holding get-togethers. “This is the biggest party I will probably ever throw, he said. “I love sports, and I love good competition. He recalled playing touch football on his family farm during high school and college. “We would mow out a field two-thirds of the size of a football field, he recalled. Readers who would like more information about the event or to register a team may visit www.tenmillionforchrist.org. Teams must be registered by Friday, Oct. 19.

Nothing says Halloween like the perfect costume. Children may spend months thinking about what they will wear and how they can bring their favorite characters from movies, comics, and books to life. Clever costumes can be made from items already on hand. Billions of dollars are spent each year on Halloween costumes, advises the National Retail Federation. Many of these costumes are worn just once. The environmental group Recycle Nation states that Halloween costumes are often made with low-value materials like petroleum-based polyester and a mix of other materials. Financially savvy environmentalists may lament that Halloween costumes can be wasteful and potentially harmful to the environment. Recycling and reusing these garments can quell such concerns. Pinterest offers many ideas for turning different materials into homemade Halloween costumes. With a little creativity, items like boxes, paper bags, plastic water bottles, and more can be upcycled into costumes at little or no cost.

Afterward, costumes can be broken down, and individual parts can be recycled. Parents also can look for items around the house that potentially can be used to make costumes. An apron and a whisk is the perfect representation of a pastry chef. Wearing a pair of overalls and holding a hammer can signify a construction worker. Another way to get more mileage out of costumes is to swap them with other people. This way another family can benefit, and the costume will not end up in the garbage after a single use. Parents can also consider turning the idea into a fundraiser for a school or sports organization. People can donate their costumes to the cause, and then others can shop the selection and pay a donation for a costume. The school or organization keeps the proceeds, and children get gently used costumes. Petroleum-based Halloween costumes that go into landfills will sit there a long time. Choosing costumes made from natural materials can help prevent this problem.

Clothing and textiles are notoriously hard to recycle, but some items on costumes may be recycled into new things. Theater groups perhaps can use pieces of old costumes to create wardrobes for their productions or children can use items for pretend play. Crafters with a creative eye may take apart pieces of costumes and turn them into artwork or home decor. Parents can try selling a costume through an online site like Craigslist. Many people are happy to get a discount on costumes that are in good shape. Otherwise, a thrift store or consignment shop may be a good option. Costumes may bring in foot traffic for these retailers, and they will be happy to take costumes in good condition prior to the Halloween season. Accessories like tiaras, swords, hats, and cloaks also can be sold or swapped. Halloween costumes are easy to enjoy, and those who want to think a little greener can find new ways to get more use out of costumes.
