Dedicates Family Life Center By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
When Bethany Christian School in Oxford held its annual fundraising banquet on Oct. 19, the evening’s program included a special surprise. “We celebrated a lady by the name of Kitty June Shepherd, who contributed so much to our school,” explained development director Kelly Cudicio. “(The banquet) was part fundraising and part dedication of the Family Life Center in her honor.” Shepherd was one of the founding members of the school, which was started as a preschool in 1980 in the basement of Bethany Presbyterian Church. As children grew, new grades were added until the school included classes through eighth grade, as it does See Bethany Christian School pg 5
Bethany Christian School social media coordinator Katie Arter (left) and development director Kelly Cudicio recently announced that the school’s newly renovated Family Life Center has been dedicated to the memory of Kitty June Shepherd, one of the founding members of the school. Avon Grove Charter School’s Early Learning Center at Kemblesville held a grand opening for its new bike trail on Oct. 26. Participants in the ceremony included (back, from left) Andy Lowe of LoweRiders Bikes and Boards, principal Maggie Johnson, school mascot Timber, head of school Kristen Bishop and (front) student riders.
Avon Grove Charter School (AGCS) is striving to make sure youngsters have fun and get exercise while they learn lifelong skills. Oct. 26 was the grand opening of a new bike trail at the charter school’s Early Learning Center (ELC) at Kemblesville, which is for kindergarten through third-grade students. The idea for the bike trail came from AGCS head of school Kristen Bishop. “I was at a park, and I saw kids struggling to ride their bikes,” she said. “A couple of parents had said to me, ‘Can the gym teacher help kids learn to ride their bikes or have bike safety lessons?’ We didn’t really have enough pathway for that to happen,” she noted. “I also saw the need for (children who need to develop) fine motor skills,
(those with) occupational therapy/physical therapy issues and kids that need to blow off some steam,” she continued. “Sometimes riding a bike and being at the gym helps your mental state.” The ELC school campus was undergoing an addition and renovation project at the building, which provided new classrooms and offices as well as a new playground area. Bishop said that this made it a perfect time to install a paved bike trail adjacent to the playground. Students use bicycles from the school, which were purchased with the help of parent and community donations. At the moment, there are about 30 bikes of various sizes, including strider bikes and bikes with training wheels. The school also provides helmets with disposable liners, or children may bring their own helmets. “This is a very unique program, one See Bike Trail pg 6

Concert from pg 1 the first and last numbers, he explained. “We will have close to 150 voices. To prepare for the combined musical numbers, the choirs will rehearse on their own prior to the concert and then hold a combined rehearsal that afternoon. “They practice in school or at church, and that way they learn the combined songs ahead of time, explained Johnson. “When they come together at 1:30 p.m. that afternoon, that gives me a chance to stage them, and we run through the two songs. A choir that is performing at the event for the first time this year will be the Kennett Community Choir. “It is neat to see a chorus from another school district, said Norris. “Penningtonville is also new this year,
which is my home church. “One of the popular acts coming back this year is the AME Church choir, Norris continued. “They are amazingly good and have lots of energy. One year the AME Church brought saxophones and bongos and all kinds of cool (instruments). Norris said the goal of the concert is to raise $10,000 for the food cupboard, which is run by director Judy Dougherty. “This concert is part of a capital campaign, Norris said. “That’s (the amount) that Judy needs to keep her operational - to pay rent and utilities. There is a high demand for food for our area. It is a highneed time, especially this time of year. Norris noted that the auditorium holds just under 1,000 people and that he would love to see
those seats filled on the afternoon of the concert. “It’s a way to kick off the holiday season, he said. “Most of the choirs do faith-based Christmas songs. It’s a very nice concert; it’s always enjoyable. The volunteer-run Octorara Area Food Cupboard, located at 714 W. Main St. in Parkesburg, serves the OASD region, including Atglen, Christiana, Cochranville, Compass, Parkesburg, Pomeroy, Sadsbury and Wagontown. In addition to supplying local families and individuals in need with nonperishable and fresh foods, it administers an Emergency Food Box program to those facing crisis situations. Wesley Bazaar Expands To Two Locations The annual Christmas craft bazaar hosted by Wesley Church has expanded to two locations. This year, the event will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Wesley Church, 1104 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville, and at Colerain Church, 1923 Noble Road, Kirkwood. “The Wesley Church location is full, and since Colerain Church has just recently become a part of Wesley, it was decided to see if any vendors on the wait list would like to sell their items at the Colerain Church location, which is only 2 miles south of Wesley Church, coordinator Bonnie Aukamp explained. The bazaar at Colerain will be a smaller version of the one at Wesley. Breakfast and lunch foods will be available at both sites, and
vendors at both locations will sell sweets and treats as well. Between the two venues, shoppers will be able to buy wooden toys and other items, health and beauty supplies, candles, painted signs, wreaths, handcrafted jewelry and hair pieces, artwork and photography, seasonal and home dĂŠcor, pet items, and knitted, crocheted, or sewn goods, along with much more. One of the vendor booths at Wesley has been reserved by The A-Team. The group meets at Wesley on two Thursdays a month and on Sunday mornings. It offers a safe place where people with intellectual and physical disabilities can socialize, have fun, and grow spiritually. Special needs coordinator Tami Shaub noted that the group is still planning what all it will sell at the bazaar, but popcorn, cookie gift plates, and crafts are on the

Aging can take its toll on drivers, prompting such drivers’ families to feel as if their loved ones’ ability to safely operate motor vehicles has been compromised. However, many seniors can still safely operate motor vehicles, and those who do can take steps to ensure they are as safe as possible behind the wheel. Seniors should avoid driving on days when aches and pains are strong. Aches and pains are common side effects of aging, and seniors know that some days are better than others. Seniors’ ability to control their vehicles may be compromised on days when stiffness, aches, or pains seem particularly strong, so it is best to avoid driving during these times. Fatigue may set in on days when aches and pains require extra effort to perform relatively simple tasks, and drivers of all ages should avoid driving while tired. Few seniors may look forward to their medical checkups, but visits to the doctor can reveal issues that can help seniors be safer on the road. Seniors are encouraged to schedule routine vision exams so eyeglass prescriptions are always up-to-date. In addition, seniors should discuss hearing screenings with their physicians so they can ensure they can always hear sirens and other motorists while on the road. Great strides have been made in regard to helping people with fading hearing hear better, and seniors would be wise to take advantage of such
advancements, which include hearing aids that can be connected to smartphones. Seniors should familiarize themselves with medication side effects. Whether they do so temporarily or permanently, many seniors take medications, and every medication comes with side effects. When filling a new prescription, people should carefully read the dosage and description label to ensure that it is safe to drive while taking the medicine. People should also take note of how they feel when taking a new prescription, avoiding driving if the medication makes them feel fatigued or drowsy or affects their motor functions. If the side effects of a new prescription are making it difficult to safely operate a vehicle, people should discuss potential alternatives with their physician. Driving in inclement weather, during rush hour, and at night may make drivers uncomfortable, regardless of their age. But such conditions can be especially dangerous for aging drivers whose vision and reaction times might be fading. Seniors who avoid driving in harsh conditions and heavy traffic may be more comfortable behind the wheel, thereby reducing their risk of accident or injury. Seniors need not give up their driver’s licenses at the first sign of aging. But adjusting certain behaviors and exercising extra caution can help these men and women stay safe behind the wheel.

today. The school moved into its own building in 1996. One of the members of the first graduating class was a granddaughter of Shepherd, who was a physical education teacher in the early years of the school and a volunteer throughout her life. Shepherd passed away in March of this year, but her connection to the school lives on. “She was such an important part of Bethany Christian School, and we felt it was awesome to honor her memory and give her a lasting legacy so that everyone knows, when they come to Bethany Christian School, that Mrs. Shepherd had a very important role in the school and left a legacy,” said Katie Arter, social media coordinator. “Her husband, Bill Shepherd, was extremely honored to have that.” Shepherd was particularly known for her volunteerism. “She holds the record for most volunteer hours,” Arter said, noting that Shepherd helped establish the foundation for what the school has become today. Shepherd was also known as a devoted member of the Bethany Presbyterian Church. “Everybody knew her, and she knew everybody. She had a heart for God and a heart for children,” Arter said. “There’s not many people on this Earth like her, and she’s left such a legacy. Everybody who knew her too seems to have a lit piece of Kitty in their heart.” The Family Life Center, now
known as the Kitty June Shepherd gymnasium, also serves as a gathering place for the community. Added to the school building in 1997, the space was in need of updating. Contributions from last year’s fundraiser enabled the school to install a new floor, update lighting and sound systems, paint and add new basketball hoops, a scoreboard and bleachers. Deb Bakelez, one of the foundation teachers of the school, paid tribute to Shepherd during the fundraising banquet, concentrating on Shepherd’s desire to serve at Bethany. A dedication plaque was revealed, followed by student performances and a banquet dinner in the newly refurbished gym. Arter made the financial appeal during the dinner. Proceeds earned this year will be allocated for education enhancements, such as textbooks, whiteboards and classroom materials. The school also announced that it will hold a Christmas program on Thursday, Dec. 6, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Bethany Presbyterian Church, located at 2483 Baltimore Pike, Oxford. The public is invited to attend. Bethany Christian School is located at 1137 Shadyside Road, Oxford. For more information or to schedule a tour, readers may call 610-998-0877. More information about the school is also available at www.bethanychristian.org and www.facebook.com/Bethany ChristianSchoolOxfordPA.
Customer Care Center Updated The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has modernized its online Customer Care Center - www.customercare.penndot.gov - to make it easier to report concerns on state-maintained roadways with new mapping capabilities, optional photo uploads, and a mobile-friendly interface. The purpose of the new Customer Care Center is to make it easier for members of the public to share their concerns or feedback. The modernized service sorts concerns into categories: road or bridge conditions; removing something from a roadway; traffic, signs, or signals; ongoing roadwork or projects; or general questions and concerns. Users can map their current location to document a concern or choose an address or roadway, as well as other relevant location information, and even upload photos related to the concern. These descriptions will provide better information for PennDOT staff and can reduce the amount of time needed to gather more information from customers submitting concerns. As of Sept. 30, the previous Customer Care Center had nearly 45,000 concerns submitted this
year. More than 96 percent of those concerns have been resolved. Motorists are asked to be as specific as possible when providing locations of concerns. Motorists should report the county, municipality, street name, and state route number, which can be found on small black and white signs posted along state highways. In addition, a description of any familiar landmarks would be helpful for PennDOT to locate the problem area. Maintenance concerns will be corrected as soon as possible. Emergency road repairs, such as road wash-outs, are handled on a top-priority basis. Concerns may also be reported through 800-FIX-ROAD (800-349-7623), though the number should not be used to report traffic accidents, disabled vehicles, or other emergencies. Motorists should continue to call 911 to report these types of emergencies. Customers with questions or concerns related to driver or vehicle services should visit www.dmv.pa.gov. For concerns related to the Pennsylvania Turnpike, readers should visit www.paturnpike.com.

The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) appreciates the sacrifices made by all veterans and wants to see that everyone leaving the military receives every benefit they earned with their service to America. To prepare for the future, veterans are encouraged to register with the DMVA, apply for federal health care benefits, and safeguard important military paperwork. Taking these steps when transitioning back to civilian life may help to make accessing military benefits easier going forward.
Veterans can sign up for the DMVA Veterans Registry at www.register.dmva.pa.gov. In addition to veterans, family members and people who work with veterans can sign up for the registry to receive helpful information about programs, benefits, and services. Information about how to apply for U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care benefits can be found by going to www.va.gov/HEALTH BENEFITS/apply/. It is also important for veterans to safeguard their DD214/215 and other military documents by filing them at their county courthouse of record. The DD-214 is an official document that contains the information needed to verify military service and help to avoid verification issues later in life. The DD-215 is used to correct errors or make additions to a DD-214. Additionally, any National Guard member who has not been ordered on active duty will not receive a DD-214. The discharge documents for National Guard members are the NGB22 and NGB-23. The easiest way to manage military documents is to make sure they are filed in a safe place immediately upon leaving the military. However, veterans who need help should never hesitate to contact the DMVA for assistance with searching for any military documents. Anyone needing assistance from the DMVA to locate their DD-214/215 or other military documentation may contact 717861-8910 or ra-req@pa.gov.

It feels wrong when parents outlive their children, and that grief is compounded when the cause of death is drugs or alcohol. Jacquelyn Grimsey knows that firsthand, as she lost her 26-yearold daughter, Samantha Simpers, on Sept. 3, 2016, to a drug overdose. Grimsey is now raising her two grandchildren, and she is organizing A Glimmer of Hope and a Celebration of Life, an event to honor the memories of loved ones who have died due to overdose or suicide. “We need to talk about the disease (of addiction),” Grimsey explained. “We should not be ashamed, but we should band together as a community. We’ll bring hope from those working on their recovery every day.” Grimsey is a member of Mothers Doing Battle, a support group for women whose children have a drug or alcohol addiction. Of the 44 members, eight have lost children to the disease. Two of the women will share during the celebration, which will be held on Saturday, Dec. 15, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Wesley Church, 1104 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville. Additionally, two people who have overcome their addictions will share their stories. “Everybody has a story. It’s all the same, but it’s not,” Grimsey remarked. “(Even if we’re not abusing substances), we all become addicts because that’s all we think about (when our loved ones are addicted).” Grimsey hopes that by talking about addiction and suicide, the
shame will dissipate, making it easier for folks to get help. Celebrate Recovery (CR) is one organization that aims to help people caught in addiction, and members of the CR group that meets at Wesley will be part of the celebration. CR leaders Mike Powers and Chuck Taylor will share their stories. “We both come from a background of addiction, but we’re here today,” Powers said. Other CR participants will be on hand to talk with attendees as well. “Part of recovery is to serve,” added CR leader Dave Eckardt. “We’re coming alongside this program because we believe in this.” To personalize the celebration, Grimsey invites folks to submit the names and photos of their loved ones - family members or friends who have died as a result of overdose or suicide for recognition during the event. The photos, along with names and dates of birth and death, should be emailed to grimsey 383@gmail.com by Friday, Nov. 30. The photos will be displayed, and each beloved’s name will be read during the celebration. “It’s an honor for us to recognize their loved ones,” Grimsey commented. “We don’t want to make it such a sad thing. We want to offer hope in the good Lord to get through these struggles.” Grimsey noted that while the service is being held in December, it is not a Christmas event. “But it’s a good time of year to have it,” she said. “Hopefully it will bring comfort to people who have lost loved ones.” In addition to the loved ones of people with addictions, A Glimmer of Hope and a Celebration of Life is open to people who are dealing with addictions themselves. A time of fellowship will be held following the service, and refreshments will be served. For more information about the event, folks may email Grimsey or call Powers at 484-880-3864.

Tips To Simplify Holiday Cooking Families big and small typically celebrate the holiday season together. For some, celebrating the holidays with family requires traveling, while others stay put and welcome family and friends into their homes. At some point during the holiday season, celebrants who host family and friends will no doubt prepare a home-cooked meal for their loved ones. Cooking for a crowd can seem like a daunting task, especially for first-time hosts. However, there are various ways for hosts to simplify cooking for a crowd this holiday season. These four tips will help hosts to tackle feeding a crowd. Hosts may agonize over their holiday menus, and some may feel compelled to prepare a family specialty or the same dishes their parents or grandparents prepared for holiday dinners when they were children.
But holiday hosts can make things easier on themselves by choosing dishes they have made in the past, regardless of their place in family history. Chances are the ingredients for hosts’ own specialties are already in the pantry, saving a potentially time-consuming trip to the grocery store. And thanks to the familiarity factor, hosts’ own specialties likely will not require as much time to prepare. Another way to simplify cooking for a crowd is to invite guests to bring along a side dish or dessert. Guests who live nearby can make something in advance of the big meal, while hosts can hand over their kitchens to overnight guests who express a willingness to contribute their own homecooked dish to the party. Sharing the cooking duties gives hosts more time to connect
with friends and family and serves as a great way to plan the menu in advance. Hosts also should not feel pressured to cook more food than is necessary. Holiday meals have a tendency to be lavish, but hosts do not have to spend all day in the kitchen preparing food that will likely end up as leftovers or trash. Hosts should get a final headcount in the days before everyone comes over and adjust their recipes accordingly. If the big meal is on Christmas Day, that does not mean hosts have to start cooking while everyone unwraps their presents. Hosts who are uncertain about what to cook can look for meals that can be prepared in advance so, come the big day, all they need to do is turn on the oven and let the meal cook while the family spends time together.

levels are constantly high and can cause serious health complications, including heart disease, kidney failure, nerve damage, and blindness. The National Eye Institute states that people with diabetes are 25 times more likely to become blind than those without diabetes. Additionally, AfricanAmericans have a 40 percent higher frequency of severe visual impairment caused by diabetic retinopathy as compared with whites, as well as twice the rate of blindness. Diabetic eye disease refers to a group of eye problems that people with diabetes may face as a complication of this disease including diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema (DME), cataract, and glaucoma. A leading cause of blindness in American adults, diabetic retinopathy is caused by damage to the small blood vessels of the retina - the seeing layer of the eye.
Diabetic macular edema (DME) is a complication of diabetes caused by leaking blood vessels, which leads to fluid accumulation in the macula, the center of the retina used for central vision, and can cause central vision to become blurry. Cataract is the clouding of the lens in the eye, which blocks or changes the passage of light into the eye and can cause vision to become blurry. Glaucoma is characterized by optic nerve damage and possible loss of side vision, usually caused by increase in fluid pressure inside the eye. For more information on diabetic eye disease, readers may call Prevent Blindness at 800331-2020 or visit www.prevent blindness.org/diabetes. For a free listing of organizations and services that provide financial assistance for vision care, readers may visit www.prevent blindness.org/.

Winter Driving Safety Tips locations and details of when statemaintained roadways were last plowed. The information is made possible by PennDOT’s Automated Vehicle Location (AVL) technology, which uses units in each of the more than 2,200 departmentowned and rented plow trucks to send a cellular signal showing where a truck is located. The 40,000 miles for which PennDOT is responsible translates into 96,000 snow-lane miles - enough miles to circle the globe nearly four times. A snow lane is calculated as the miles of road multiplied by the number of lanes, which means a 1mile section of four-lane roadway would equal 4 snow-lane miles. The department maintains roughly the same number of miles maintained by the state in New York, New Jersey, and all the New England states combined.

With the winter season approaching, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) shared the agency’s plans for winter services and highlighted tools members of the public can use through the winter and how they can prepare for the coming season. PennDOT’s top priority is safety, and that guides winter preparations and operations. To help the public prepare for the season and share information about winter services, resources are available at www.penndot.gov/winter. The site also has a complete winter guide with detailed information about winter services in each of PennDOT’s 11 engineering districts. The public can also access travel information on nearly 40,000 roadway miles year-round at www.511PA.com, and during the winter, they can find plow truck
With $228 million budgeted for this winter’s statewide operations, PennDOT deploys about 4,500 onthe-road workers, has more than 620,000 tons of salt on hand across the state, and will take salt deliveries throughout the winter. Winter maintenance is a critical and difficult task, and drivers should always think safety first and be sure that they are giving plenty of room to PennDOT operators and other motorists. When winter weather hits, PennDOT’s primary focus is on interstates and expressways, and equipment may be redirected to those routes during significant winter events. The more traffic a roadway has, the more attention it will receive from plows, so motorists may find deeper accumulations on lesstraveled routes and should adjust their driving for those conditions. If motorists encounter snow or ice-covered roads, they should slow down, increase their following distance and avoid distractions. Last winter in Pennsylvania, preliminary data shows that there were 440 crashes resulting in one fatality and 221 injuries on snowy, slushy, or ice-covered roadways where aggressive-driving behaviors such as speeding or making careless lane changes were factors. In addition to planning for winter travel conditions, motorists should prepare their vehicles for the season. Tires should be checked often for the correct level of air pressure and adequate tire tread depth to perform on ice and snow. A quick way to check tread depth is to insert a penny in the tread groove with Lincoln’s head upside
down. If the entire head can be seen, the tires are worn and traction will suffer. If the driver lives in an area prone to heavy snow, he or she may want to consider using dedicated snow tires or carrying a set of tire chains. At a minimum, all-season tires should be rated for use in mud and snow. Once vehicles are travel-ready, drivers should be prepared for winter or vehicle emergencies, especially if long-distance travel is planned. PennDOT urges motorists to carry an emergency kit. An emergency kit should include items such as nonperishable food, water, first aid supplies, warm clothes, a blanket, a cellphone charger and a small snow shovel. However, motorists should tailor their kits to any specific needs that they or their families may have. Drivers should consider adding such items as baby supplies, extra medication, pet supplies, or even children’s games. Motorists can check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles, including color-coded winter conditions on 2,900 miles, by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information, and access to more than 860 traffic cameras. 511PA is also available through a smartphone application for iPhone and Android devices, by calling 5-1-1, or by following regional Twitter alerts accessible on the 511PA website. For more information on PennDOT, winter preparations, and additional winter-driving resources for motorists, readers may visit www.penndot.gov.

Library Director Receives Award
Marguerite Dube recently received the Difference of One Award from the Chester County OIC. On Oct. 26, Marguerite Dube, director of the Chester County Library and its Henrietta Hankin Branch, received the Difference of One Award at the Chester County OIC’s 39th annual Award Gala. Dube received the 2018 Difference of One Award for her dedication to public service and personal commitments to excellence in helping her community and its members. The Chester County Library partners with the Chester County OIC, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing free adult basic literacy education and life skills programs that prepare individuals for employment leading to economic self-sufficiency. The library supports adult literacy through its Adult Graded Reading collection and by providing office space, computers, supplies, and other amenities. Dube began her career at the Chester County Library in January 2001 as the business/finance manager. She developed a passion for library services and in 2006 was awarded an IMLS grant to pursue a master’s degree in library science at Drexel University. In September 2008, she was appointed as the director at the Chester County Library. During her tenure, she has overseen many physical changes to the buildings and strives to create a welcoming atmosphere
for all the library’s customers. She said one of her major accomplishments has been the redesign of the balcony area of the library, which houses the new young adult area, the Jacobs Technology Center with its Digital Media Lab, and the spacious OIC adult tutoring area. The Difference of One Award is given in memory of the Rev. Dr. Leon H. Sullivan, founder of OIC of America. Sullivan impacted the quality of life in Philadelphia by developing an economic empowerment plan that led to a set of principles that aimed to empower people in their own communities in Philadelphia, across the country, and around the world. The Difference of One Award, developed by Chester County OIC, is given in honor of people who singlehandedly have made a difference in supporting the values of Chester County OIC. The mission of the Chester County and Henrietta Hankin Branch libraries is to provide informational, educational, and cultural services to the residents of Chester County so that they may be lifelong learners. The Chester County Library and District Center is located at 450 Exton Square Parkway, Exton. For more information, readers may visit www.chescolibraries.org.
