OAHS Career Fair Showcases Job Options By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
During Oxford Area High School’s (OAHS) annual Career Fair on Nov. 15, more than 40 different careers were represented by presenters from local businesses, colleges, military groups, law enforcement and emergency services. All students from freshmen to seniors were able to visit the rows of tables set up with displays and information, plus they had the chance to talk with people who are actively involved in the represented fields. The career fields covered everything from the visual and performing arts to engineering and medical fields. Some careers represented require advanced degrees, while requirements for others can be obtained through technical schools or apprenticeships. See OAHS Career Fair pg 2

They also had a chance to talk to take a close look at the different tables. “It’s really helpful to look around at different career fields and get (the representative’s) perspective on it,” OAHS sophomore Chloe Campbell said. “I want to pursue something in business management; I know there are a lot of entrepreneurs here I can talk to.” Jacob Hewes also had his eye on a specific career field. “I’m a senior, and I’ve already started the college process, so I know what I want to do - engineering,” said Jacob. “I know there’s an engineer here; I’ll talk to him.” “(The Career Fair) is also really good because although you might not be specifically interested in their career, (the presenters) are really experienced people,” added Jacob’s twin brother, Noah Hewes. “They offer you advice on an outlook on life and (what) you can do to benefit yourself.”

Wakefield Bible Church, 2310 Robert Fulton Highway, Peach Bottom, will host its second annual live Nativity scene on Friday, Dec. 14, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Pastor Phil Towles related that the event was created to connect with the community, illustrate the reality of Christmas, and share the message of Jesus Christ coming to the world. The Nativity scene will be set in a stable made of straw bales. Last year’s event involved about 10 people as well as a donkey, a calf, a goat, and some rabbits. This year, the church has invited other congregations to participate in the event, and a variety of
Some of the presenters came with interesting equipment that caught the students’ attention. Jason Dolinger, Wilmington Police Department bomb squad coordinator, had one of the most popular tables featuring bomb-sniffing dog Greta and a bomb squad robot. “(The students) are inquiring about what I do as a police officer and asking questions about the dog and what to do to get into my line of work. Everybody seems pretty curious,” Dolinger said. A 21-year veteran of the Wilmington Police Department, Dolinger is enthusiastic about events like the Career Fair that connect law enforcement with schools. “I think it breaks the barrier of meeting an officer out on the street,” he stated. “(Students) can come up and casually talk to us, ask us questions and break the ice.” A few of the presenters let students know that they can help them prepare for college, including those pursuing an art career. “At the Oxford Arts Alliance, we do art lessons, and one of the lessons we offer is portfolio preparation. To get into a fine arts program in college, you have to have a portfolio,” Oxford Arts Alliance art coordinator Caitlin Dougherty said. “I help (students) get their portfolio ready. I teach them about framing and matting,

It also aims to help the individual students develop leadership skills and encourages them to become involved in their community. “There was an application where I listed my general information, and then I wrote a short essay about why I wanted this position, Elizabeth said. “I think I’m going to be surprised about how the meetings run because I’ve never been to one before, and I think it’s going to be different from what I expected. Fundraising Dinner from pg 1 By Francine Fulton
OneRunTogether (ORT), a nonprofit organization that provides spiritual and financial support to cancer patients undergoing treatment, recently held its fourth annual fundraising dinner and silent auction at the Downingtown Country Club. The organization raised $32,000 during the event, which was attended by more than 150 guests. “We raised $2,000 more than last year, so we were pleased with that,” said Vernon Murphy, ORT founder and executive director. He noted that because local businesses sponsored the cost of the evening, the entire amount of the night’s donations will be able to go directly to help cancer patients. In addition to the meal, the event included a silent auction where attendees placed bids on items such as artwork, gift baskets, gift certificates, Flyers tickets and more. Murphy also shared his vision and motivation for starting the ministry after losing his wife, Beth, to breast cancer in 2009. OIC Tutoring Program Seeks Volunteers rs Online Training Available By Francine Fulton
The Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) is currently seeking volunteers willing to help individuals from other countries with their English language skills through its adult tutoring program. No experience is necessary, but volunteers must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. According to Debbie Rikess, who is the new adult tutoring program coordinator, there is a current waiting list of 22 people located throughout Chester County who are in need of volunteer
she said. Tutors are asked to meet with a student for a minimum of three hours a week for at least one year. “We ask them to meet at public locations,” Rikess explained. “We have a lot of people from Exton, West Chester, Downingtown and Coatesville that like to meet at the Chester County Library in Exton. “It’s a great location for people to meet.” She said that most student/tutor pairs meet twice a week for an hour and a half each time. In the past, tutors were required to attend a training workshop held at the library in Exton. Now, the program offers online training for tutors. “We recently switched to online training

CVC Bestows Awards The Crime Victims’ Center of Chester County Inc. (CVC) celebrated its 45th anniversary with its annual Night of Hope Gala at the American Helicopter Museum on Nov. 2. The event honored Phoenixville Area School District superintendent Dr. Alan Fegley with the John Crane Child Victims’ Advocacy Award and Chester County detective James Ciliberto with the inaugural Peggy Gusz Victims’ Advocacy Legacy Award. The John Crane Child Victims’ Advocacy Award is presented annually by the CVC board of directors to a person in Chester County who is not in the field of victim advocacy but supports child victims and their needs through work in related fields. Fegley was nominated by CVC community outreach supervisor Joe Myers to commend the work being accomplished through the Phoenixville HUB, a school district-based organization that brings together school profes-
sionals and outside providers to create a coordinated system of care for the students and families in the district. The Peggy Gusz Award was newly created this year to recognize Margaret “Peggy” Gusz’s longtime victim advocacy efforts since the agency was formed in 1973. Through her efforts, she helped give a voice to victims when their needs went unmet and helped change the attitudes of law enforcement professionals, medical professionals and the legal system toward victims. She also was responsible for having legislation enacted to guarantee victims’ rights and having trainings formalized for professionals and volunteers who work with victims. This inaugural award was given to Ciliberto for his professional service to victims of crime, including the young, the elderly, and victims of homicide, as well as the families and friends affected by these crimes.
