West Grove UMC Welcomes Youth Director By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
Melanie Hartley is serving her first Christmas season with West Grove United Methodist Church (UMC) as the director of children and youth ministries. Hartley began the role on July 1. Her tasks include overseeing the Sunday school programs for children and youths, children’s worship and the Confirmation program. She also oversees the youth group for high school and middle school-age students, which meets each Sunday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. for games, a lesson, Bible study and discussion. Hartley graduated from Eastern University in St. David’s with a bachelor’s degree in youth ministry. “I’m a lay person. I’m not ordained, but I have an education in programming for kids and youths but also teaching faith and understanding the Bible and talking about theology and things like that,” she explained. Hartley has a variety of experiences working with youths, including a position at St. David’s Episcopal Church following graduation. She then worked with children’s programs at a YMCA in New Jersey and for the last five years was the director of youth and young

adult ministries at Newark United Methodist Church. “My first experience was as a 17-year-old camp counselor at a Christian camp in New Jersey,” she said. Hartley always felt her closest connection to older children, but it was a job at a summer camp in north Philadelphia that let her know she had a talent for working with younger children as well. “I was working with the elementary-age kids, and it was a really great experience,” she said. “What I took from that was a sense that I can work with kids that are younger; I have a gift for that I never thought I had.” Hartley is enjoying her position at West Grove UMC. “I just really love being a positive part of a child’s life,” she said. “It’s wonderful. The people here are really great. They were very open and welcoming. I really love that it’s a church that’s intergenerational. It’s wonderful to see multiple generations that come together and support one another.” West Grove UMC is located at 300 N. Guernsey Road, West Grove. For more information about church activities, readers may call the church office at 610-869-9334 or visit www.westgroveumc.org or www.facebook.com/westgroveumc.

Earlier this year, Decade to Doorways published its most recent operational plan to ensure the program continues to prevent homelessness and quickly re-house those experiencing homelessness rather than just manage homelessness. The updated plan will guide the approximately 35 organizations that work to see that the Chester County community is healthy, housed and stable.

Administrators and staff of Decade to Doorways, Chester County’s initiative to end homelessness, recently honored a number of organizations that are working to prevent and eventually eradicate chronic homelessness in the county. Representatives from approximately 40 groups attended the event, and 10 Hometown Heroes were nominated by their peers for their dedication to pursuing an end to homelessness within Chester County. The event included an address by keynote speaker Julia Orlando, who, as director of the Bergen County, N.J., Housing, Health and Human Service Center, led that county to be the first in the nation to successfully reach and maintain what is known as functional zero for chronic homelessness. Since the inception of Decade to Doorways in 2012, Chester County has served more than 6,200 clients experiencing homelessness, of which more than 1,300 were children. Nearly

The fourth annual contemplative Christmas Eve service, featuring music, readings, candlelighting and a time of silence, will be held on Monday, Dec. 24, from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Sadsbury Friends Meeting House, one of the oldest houses of worship in Lancaster County. The event is designed to offer a deeper, quieter and more solemn celebration of the Christmas holiday. People of all faiths are welcome to attend. “As the service begins, we will still be in daylight, but during our hour together, the day will grow dark outside,” said congregation member Miriam Blank. “We will be lighting candles throughout the evening, bringing light into the darkness.” Live Christmas music will be provided by Brenda Sauder and her daughter, Faith, accompanied by Louise Ranck on the piano. “We will have poetry, Bible (passages) and reflective readings and periods
of contemplative silence,” Blank explained. “There will also be a fire going in the fireplace, which was how the Quakers (in olden times) stayed warm. It was all they had (as a source of heat).” At the end of the service, everyone will sing “Silent Night” together. There will be light refreshments downstairs in the church hall following the service. According to www.sadsbury friendsmeeting.org, the congregations of the Religious Society of Friends, also known as Quakers, do not have a pastor and there are no set readings during normal services. Instead, members gather for silent reflection. Should people feel moved to speak, they may share their thoughts with the group. The service may be completely silent, or at other times vocal ministry may come in the form of prayer, praise of God, song, teaching or witnessing. Worship ends with the shaking of hands. The Sadsbury Friends Meeting House was constructed in 1747. See Christmas Eve Service pg 5

Historically a peace church, Sadsbury Friends played a part in the Underground Railroad during the Civil War era. Originally, men and women gathered for worship in separate rooms, with partitions between them that could be opened or closed, but that separation is a part of the past. In modern meeting houses, men and women sit together. For the Christmas Eve service, the main floor partitions at the meeting house will be opened for the larger-than-usual gathering. To honor safety standards, doors will close when all seats are taken. Blank said that last year, some of those who attended the service were in the area visiting relatives for the holiday. “We had someone come from Bronx, New York, and we had Amish and Mennonites (in attendance). The past six years have been momentous at Wesley Church. The congregation, having outgrown its chapel at 7 Wesley Road, Quarryville, moved into a new facility at 1104 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville, in 2012. Three years later, Wesley left the United Methodist denomination and began operating as an independent church. In 2016, Wesley Church launched La Cosecha, a Spanish-speaking congregation. The following year, the new group moved into the chapel. At the end of 2017, members of what was once Colerain Baptist Church, 1923 Noble Road, Kirkwood, approached the leaders of Wesley Church and asked to merge with the larger congregation. The adoption was finalized this year, and Wesley now has a Colerain campus. Colerain’s pastor, Bryce Wendler, has teamed with Wesley’s director of operations, Rich Stevenson ,to lead the young adult ministry. 2018 also saw the opening of the Wesley Network Center. Located in the same building as the Daily Grind coffeehouse, 221 W. Fourth St., Quarryville, the center now houses pastors’ offices and offers space for individuals and groups to meet. Lead pastor Blake Deibler explained that as Wesley has grown, the church considered adding a new Sunday school wing to its main facility but opted instead to move the offices into the network center, creating more space for classrooms and opportunities to reach the public in new ways. “We’re looking to impact our community, Deibler explained. “We see a future with lots of ministries here (at the center). We want this place used for the glory of the Lord, Stevenson added. “We’re really hoping this becomes a broader place for worship and a hub for community ministries. Our hope for this campus of Wesley Church is to see people reached with the love and power of Jesus Christ. See Network pg 12

12 - COMMUNITYCOURIER - Oxford Edition - December 12, 2018
Network from pg 6 Following a renovation coordinated by director of student life Lester Davis, the center hosted an open house on Dec. 1, and regular morning prayer and worship times were slated to begin on Dec. 10. Seven people take turns leading the sessions, which are held on weekdays from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. Folks may drop in at any time. Stevenson said that there is a time for directed prayer, with attendees invited to pray for specific elements of the community, such as churches, leaders, students, and first responders. Special focus is placed on prayer for a spiritual awakening and renewal in the Southern End. There is also recorded and live music, and there are opportunities for folks to submit prayer requests. “We want people to know they can find comfort, strength, and healing in Jesus,” Stevenson remarked. The young adult ministry meets at the center on Tuesdays at 7 p.m., and anyone who considers themselves to be a young adult is invited to participate. The current focus, “Conversations on Christ,” is a study of Christology that began a few weeks ago by exploring who Jesus Christ is shown to be in John 1. Stevenson noted that attendees are challenged to engage in introspection, to be open to the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and to observe how the incarnation of Jesus Christ is revealed through Scripture and in their daily lives. The meeting times for the Latino Bible study will be announced once it is scheduled. La Cosecha leaders are also considering offering English language teaching at the center. Folks are welcome to drop by the center any time the door is open. The center will be open for Midnight Gladness from 6 p.m. to midnight on Friday, Dec. 21. A New Year’s Eve celebration will be held at 11 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 31; it will include worship, Communion, fun, and food. Additionally, special services will take place on Christmas Eve. Services will be held at 3 and 7 p.m. at the main campus, at 7 p.m. at La Cosecha, and at 8 p.m. at the Colerain campus.
