Betsy Bradford (left) is a co-facilitator along with Ellen Neff (not pictured) for a new Alzheimer’s and Dementia Caregivers Support Group that will begin meeting on Jan. 5, 2019, at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, Oxford, where Mary Ann Mertz (right) is pastor.

A new Alzheimer’s and Dementia Caregivers Support Group, presented by the Alzheimer’s Association, Delaware Valley Chapter, will be offered in the church house at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, Oxford. Meetings will take place on the first Saturday of each month at 10 a.m., beginning on Jan. 5, 2019. “Were going to start on Saturdays, but if the group feels that is not going to meet their needs then we’ll take a consensus of the group and see what they prefer,” said Betsy Bradford, who is co-facilitator for the group along with Ellen Neff. The aim of the group is to help caregivers build a support system with people who understand the difficulties they are facing. Group members can

exchange practical information on caregiving challenges and possible solutions, as well as talk through issues and ways of coping. They may also simply share their feelings. The group will also help people learn about helpful resources in the community. “Every quarter we’re required to have an educational session, but between times we are whatever the group needs,” Bradford said. “We’re not leaders; we’re facilitators. We’re going to share differences and commonalities and try to support one another.” Both Bradford and Neff are nurses and have experience with the issues caregivers are facing. Bradford, who is also on the church’s health care ministry team, is a retired nurse who worked in geriatrics and has experience with veterans’ support groups, plus she has a personal interest in the topic.

Nottingham Elementary School recently kicked off its Safety Patrol program for the 2018-19 school year with the induction of 22 fourth-grade students into the Safety Patrol. The program is sponsored by the AAA Mid-Atlantic Foundation for Safety and Education and the Oxford Borough Police Department. Patrollers help direct fellow students to safely cross streets and driveways, exit and

enter buses, and walk to their homerooms quickly and quietly. Patrol members also teach other students about traffic safety on a peer-to-peer basis and serve as role models. Members receive complete training in traffic safety, and the goal is to help them develop safety awareness, leadership skills, the ability to work as a team, self-esteem, civic mindedness, and respect for law enforcement.

out with you and help you go through some of life’s bumps. Just by petting a dog, it decreases blood pressure. For kids, it creates a safe environment.” Alakszay said that Lily is certified through Therapy Dogs International. “Therapy Dogs were the folks that provided stress relief dogs after 9/11,” she noted. She said that certification training can take up to three years, noting that Lily has earned her American Kennel Club (AKC) K9 Good Citizenship certificate and the Good Community Dog certificate. “I’m proud of her. One of the exams that we went through to be certified was a two-hour test,” Alakszay recalled. “She had to walk through crowds and avoid food that they put down. She had to walk past another dog, and they had to ignore each other. Out of 15 dogs, only five passed that day.” Alakszay pointed out that one of Lily’s favorite places to visit is the Barclay Friends senior living facility in West Chester. “Depending on where they are with Alzheimer’s or dementia, (the residents) come to life when they see her. It is very gratifying,” she added.

Among the other activities was the Friday night gala held at Whitford Country Club. Members, friends and guests from the beneficiary organizations danced to live music, enjoyed food and participated in silent and live auctions. On Saturday, the golf sponsors’ event featured 124 golfers. The Pro-Am on Sunday was canceled, but members and participating PGA professionals enjoyed lunch and the Eagles’ victory.

As part of the formal review of Chester County’s strategic plan, Chester County commissioners recently announced the results of a citizen survey, undertaken as part of the review process for the strategic plan’s next five years. Results of the Chester County Quality of Life Survey, conducted by West Chester University’s Center for Social and Economic Policy Research during September, are based on a random sample of 1,256 responses, evenly represented from all areas of Chester County. The results provide a comparison to the citizens’ surveys undertaken in 2009 and 2013, which helped form the basis of the commissioners’ strategic plan goals. In 2018, residents continue to give Chester County high ratings in terms of it being an excellent or good place to raise a family (94 percent) and nine out of 10 (91 percent) rate it as an excellent or good place to obtain a good education. The survey reported a significant increase in those who found the county an “excellent or good” place

to find a good job (moving from 62 percent in 2013 to 79 percent in 2018). The percentage of residents describing Chester County as a better place to live increased from 25 percent in 2013 to 33 percent in 2018. Open space, scenery, and rural areas continue to be noted by respondents as the best thing about life in Chester County, and this year’s survey highlighted “maintenance of water quality” and “providing quality services while maintaining low taxes” as the two most important issues facing Chester County. For questions about the importance of issues facing Chester County, the top three results stating “most important or one of the most important” were maintaining the quality of water (83 percent), providing quality services while maintaining low taxes (81 percent), and the preservation of open space (77 percent). The issue of growth and land development in the county (55 percent) moved up See Survey Results pg 7

“My mother had Alzheimer’s for 14 years and was in a community nursing home in the area, and there was no support group. I always said (that) when I retired, I was going to have a support group in the area,” Bradford said. She noted that the closest support groups to the Oxford area are in Kennett Square and Elkton, Md. “One of the things we’ve been trying to identify with the parish is what niches or what places in the community are not being served,” St. Christopher’s pastor Mary Ann Mertz said. “To have a support group for the caregivers of people who have Alzheimer’s and dementia, that’s huge.” The caregivers group is open

Citizen Planners Hold Breakfast Affordably priced housing for professionals, those in the trades, first-time home buyers, seniors, and those looking to locate in Chester County is needed today and in the coming years, according to housing professionals at the Citizen Planners’ Breakfast held recently. The two-hour Citizen Planners’ Breakfast was sponsored by Chester County 2020 and the Chester County Planning Commission. Brian O’Leary, executive director of the Chester County Planning Commission, began the event by saying that an estimated 55,000 new homes will be needed by 2035 for the county’s growing population and that the county must balance the need for growth with the need to preserve open space. Lisa Moore, manager of Kennett Township, told the audience that her municipality is looking to quality affordable housing and workforce housing. Several such projects are going on in the township and neighboring Kennett Square borough, she said. Chester County 2020 is a nonprofit organization helping to create livable communities by bringing people together to find common ground and then working to transform dialogue into action. Students from pg 8 by the school administration. The Students of the Month for December were named after being nominated by members of the art, music, business education, and guidance departments, as well as the nurse’s office and the Academically Talented Program. Joey DiNapoli, a freshman, was nominated by teacher Erin Kauppila for being an excellent band student and for always being prepared for class and rehearsal. He also lends an extra hand and often seeks ways to help without being asked. He also practices percussion outside of the school day. Abby Rodriguez, a freshman, was nominated by guidance counselor Mary Humphreys for showing initiative in planning for post-high school. She is involved in Chester County Futures, cheerleading, band, her youth group, and track and field. Olivia Young, a freshman, was nominated by teacher Valerie Hill. According to Hill, Olivia is new to the district but has blossomed in Art 1 and takes risks with her work, even staying after school to work with new materials. Christopher Goodrich, a sophomore, was nominated by teacher David Martin for his academic achievement in Intro to Business and Entrepreneurship and for his positive attitude, humor, and enthusiastic class participation, including asking thought-provoking questions. Nathaniel Greer-Eshelman, a sophomore, was nominated by school nurses Tish Foster and Nicole Cardarople for showing independence and adjusting well, as well as for being polite and talkative and sharing his sketches with the health office. He has also shown improvement in his classwork and is willing to assist his classmates. Turner Hannon, a sophomore, was nominated by teacher Jackie Mavrelos for his academics and his dedication to his schoolwork, as well as for his decisiveness and confidence and for being a model student. Carlos Lara, a sophomore, was nominated by teacher Kimberly Webber for showing an improvement in his attitude, grades, and work ethic. Karlyn Rees, a sophomore, was nominated by teacher Jenny Muehlmatt for being conscientious, thoughtful, and kind. She was also recognized for being talented and being involved in sports. Anna Hampshire, a junior, was nominated by teacher Jason McLead for being active at the high school. In addition to taking the lead in bringing in cans for the annual food drive last year, she is active in Future Business Leaders of America and has acted as the Hornet mascot at various school events. Miranda Nilan, a junior, was nominated by teacher Bridget Cotellese for showing leadership skills in her chorus classes, for being a talented musician, and for being kind and caring to her peers and respectful to her teachers. Miranda was recently selected to perform with the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association District 12 Chorus. Emily Ramsey, a junior, was nominated by guidance counselor Keith Truver. According to Truver, Emily is new to the district and has transitioned into the school by asking appropriate questions and advocating for herself.
