Three years after graduating from Solanco High School, Sara Hodgkiss entered the Army in October 2006 with the goal of serving country above self. Nearly seven years later in February 2013, she received a medical discharge and joined the ranks of disabled veterans. Hodgkiss has pressed forward, her medical condition notwithstanding. Last year, she launched a nonprofit equine/animal rescue, Woerth It Hollow, at her family’s farm with hopes See Animal Rescue pg 2

of providing a safe and supportive place for veterans and other disabled individuals to discover every aspect of horsemanship and rescue farming. “This is my way of continuing this selfless service and helping my fellow brothers and sisters in arms to do so themselves,” Hodgkiss explained. “Who can deny the added bonus of saving the horses as well?” Hodgkiss grew up at Woerth It Hollow, 259 Cooper Drive, Kirkwood, and was an avid horsewoman until around middle school. While she stopped competing in hunter/jumper events, she continued to work in the stables. After leaving the military, Hodgkiss found herself in a position to take over the farm. She spent several years finding a way to manage her health, and she fostered the idea of a rescue for animals and veterans. Hodgkiss had served a tour in Afghanistan, and she witnessed soldiers in her unit struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after deployment. Working with horses is one way that veterans can cope. “This is a place where veterans can be relaxed and have fun,” Hodgkiss related. While there is no formal curriculum in place, Hodgkiss has specific elements of equine care that she wants each program

participant to learn. Anyone considering adopting a horse should know what elements go into a stable’s budget, what to feed a horse, and how to care for the health of an animal. Program participants also need to learn how to interact safely with a horse and how to groom it. “Before you ride (a horse), you have to care (for it),” said Nancy Snelgrove, who served in the Army with Hodgkiss and now visits Woerth It Hollow with her children. “It’s like with a vehicle; you have to maintain it and take care of it.” Allowing veterans to work directly with horses offers them a chance to be in charge. Folks who might otherwise be accustomed to taking orders now have the opportunities to make decisions. According to Hodgkiss, this helps them develop responsibility and step into leadership roles. At some point, Hodgkiss would like to train a veteran to take over the program so that it will continue to operate smoothly if her health changes. Hodgkiss would also like to develop a vocational rehabilitation component. Although the initial program is in its infancy, nearly a half-dozen veterans are among the successful participants. “We have had at least five people completely turn around,” Hodgkiss said. “These horses have an ability that other people don’t.” In addition to helping veterans, Woerth It Hollow has rehabilitated three equines. Hodgkiss and program participants have worked with the horses to build trust around humans and to develop their manners. Gizmo and Stella are the farm’s permanent residents, but Hope will eventually be available for adoption. The farm hosted an open house for young farmers in June, and Hodgkiss would like to host another in July. She welcomes inquiries about sponsoring the event. Additionally, anyone interested in volunteering at Woerth It Hollow - particularly anyone who can make repairs to the barn and contribute toward making the facility handicapped-accessible or work with the horses - is welcome to email WoerthIt Hollow@gmail.com. and folk music. “This is our first appearance at Friends Folk Club,” said Pierson. “We will perform a mix of mostly originals (and) a few choice covers, ranging from folk to blues to New Orleans traditional jazz.” Pierson said that the musicians enjoy performing at smaller venues. “We’ve played in lots of coffeehouse and house concert settings,” Pierson noted. “I really enjoy the smaller listening rooms that provide not only an opportunity for the listeners to get up close and personal, but also the chance for us to get to know the folks who come.” According to www.heather pierson.com, Pierson first discovered her love of music when she listened to her dad play his clarinet to the recordings of jazz musicians Pete Fountain and Woody Herman, among others. Her dad started to teach her to play the piano at the age of 5. “I’ll never forget it,” she stated. “The very first time I played the piano - a real piano - I knew that this was exactly what I wanted to do, every moment that I had the chance to do it.” Pierson has released four recordings on her own and, in June of 2017, she released her first full-length recording with Sturtevant and Nadeau, titled
“Singin’.” The CD, which features 10 originals and two classics, debuted at No. 1 on the folk radio charts and was the No. 11 album for the year. The trio recently returned from a national tour that included stops at the main stage of the Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas and the Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Pierson said her goal is “to share her love of music and of life with others - one song, one heart, one mind at a time.” Tickets to the upcoming concert will be sold at the door. Children age 12 and under will be admitted for free. Refreshments will be available at a reasonable price. The Friends Folk Club is an all-volunteer, community-run concert series. It has been in operation in southern Chester County for more than 20 years. It began when concerts were held at the home of Mary Louise Bove, founder and director. For the past 15 years, the Friends Folk Club has held concerts at the Oxford Friends Meetinghouse, but in November of 2017, the concert series moved to St. Christopher’s in order to accommodate a larger audience. Hopewell Students from pg 1 including Jessica Shelderfer, who was the first-place grand prize winner. “Students from the entire state of Pennsylvania participated, so winning the award was an outstanding achievement,” said PSHA member Karen King, who is the speech/language pathologist for OASD. Connor Stockton was the secondplace winner, and Hannah Martin was the third-place winner. All three students received a gift card and certificates from PSHA. In her essay, Jessica talked about how developing speech and language benefits a person both socially and academically. “Being able to improve how I speak has built bridges,” she wrote. “I get less frustrated. I can communicate more easily.” Connor wrote about his undefeated lacrosse team. “What makes a good lacrosse team is a team that communicates with each other,” he wrote. “You need to have faith in your team and yourself. You need to be bold. In conclusion, communication, both verbal and
nonverbal communication is the bridge to winning.” Hannah wrote about her sister, who is teaching English to children in Honduras. “By learning English, children are more likely to experience a brighter future by getting a job and communicating with others,” she wrote. “Communication will allow them to build bridges to deal with their problems and earn a living so they can enjoy life.” In addition to the essay contest, PSHA also held a coloring contest for kindergarten through third-grade students and a drawing contest for students in third through sixth grades. Those interested in reading the students’ entire essays and learning about the other contest winners may visit www.psha.org/consumer-resources/better-hearing-speech-month-winners.htm. Founded in 1960, PSHA is a professional organization of speech-language pathologists, audiologists and teachers of the hearing-impaired. For more information, readers may visit www.psha.org.

Parkesburg’s Keystone Valley Fire Department. “We’ll have a display by the fire company, but we won’t have the firefighter challenge this year,” Assetto noted. “There will be a lot of activities all day long.” More than 20 vendors will set up shop, plus booths with useful information from state representatives and state senators will be on-site, along with churches and nonprofit agencies. “We invite all of the nonprofits and the churches to participate,” Assetto said. The big feature will come at the end of the day when a fireworks display is presented at approximately 9 p.m. The annual event is a production of the Parkesburg Special Events Committee. Proceeds from the Community Day will be distributed to local nonprofit organizations. “So far, (in the first four years) we’ve been able to contribute over $45,000 back into the community. We’re a charitable, nonprofit corporation, ” Assetto said. Minch Park is located along West Street between West Second and West Fourth avenues. The fifth annual Parkesburg Community Day will be held on Saturday, July 7, from 3 to 9 p.m., rain or shine, at Minch Park, 400 West St., Parkesburg. A large tent will be set up on-site, but everyone is encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. Attendees may relax and enjoy the music of two classic rock bands, Syde 2 and 74/75. The event will also feature an
appearance by the Phillie Phanatic. Attendees may enjoy their own picnic lunches or choose from the selection of food that will be available for purchase at the park. “The local baseball league is (selling) hot dogs and hamburgers, and the VFW Post 4480 will have roast beef sandwiches and pork sandwiches,” said Jack Assetto, Parkesburg special events committee president. He noted that there will also be an area serving specialty beverages for attendees age 21 and older.
