Parkesburg Community Day To Feature Full Day of By Marcella Peyre-Ferry

Preparations are under way to make the first annual Parkesburg Community Day an event filled with fun for the entire family. From a 5K run in the morning to family activities in the park to shop tours and fireworks, there will be something for all ages and interests. Set for Saturday, Aug. 2, with a rain date of Sunday, Aug. 3, Minch Park, located at West Street and Second Avenue, will be the focal point of the day's events. A wide assortment of vendors will be at the park from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., offering food, health screenings and general information, plus there will be music in the park. The morning will begin with a 5K race through the borough streets, starting at 9 a.m., with registration beginning at 8 a.m. Preregistration is encouraged. Commemorative T-shirts will go to those who sign up in advance. The 5K is not the only race of the day. There will be bike races for children on Gay Street, followed by a bed race for adults and an unusual outhouse race. Residents and local organizations are being encouraged to form teams to enter this fun event. The Robert Montgomery Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) Post 448 is sponsoring the races, with the Ladies Auxiliary hosting contests for children in the park. Later in the day, beginning at 4 p.m., the VFW will also host a chicken barbecue at its Post on West Fourth Avenue, with live music and a horseshoe tournament. At the park, there will be action to watch as the Keystone Valley Fire Department hosts a Firefighters' Challenge. Local fire companies from Chester and Lancaster counties will compete against the clock in various events that illustrate what a firefighter has to endure under real firefighting conditions. As evening approaches, the action will turn into a street party. Local business owners will open their establishments to adults age 21 and over for free tours and complimentary refreshments. The idea for the Parkesburg Community Day grew from the success of the criterium races held in the town the past two years. With word that the bike races would not be run this year, community members wanted to build on the positive energy that they had begun. "We decided we had momentum from last year; we had approximately 1,000

people (in attendance), and we thought we'd like to do something to continue it," committee chair Jack Assetto said. The group went to the Parkesburg Borough Council with the idea for the event, and the Council formed an Ad Hoc Committee and provided seed money to get the Community Day started. "The borough is behind us 100 percent," Assetto said, noting that he hopes for a much bigger turnout than the bike races drew. "We're aiming for five times as many as came to the bike race," he said. In addition to providing a fun day filled with activities for the community, the event has a serious side. All proceeds will go back to locally based charities in Parkesburg and the immediately surrounding municipalities of Sadsbury, West Sadsbury and Highland townships. "We're not doing it just for the fun of it. We're doing it for a charitable event for the community," committee member Gerry Treadway said. Beneficiaries will include The Parkesburg Point youth center, the Chester County Food Bank, the Parkesburg Free Library, the Keystone Valley Fire Department and Parkesburg Churches Community Outreach (PCCO). "There are a lot of things going on in Parkesburg as far as helping people," Treadway noted. The evening will conclude with a big bang at dark with a spectacular fireworks display at the park. For more information or to preregister for the 5K race, interested readers may visit “Parkesburg Community Day on Facebook. For information on becoming a sponsor, vendor or volunteer, individuals may contact Assetto at 610-857-1920.

Parkesburg Community Day 2014 - 5
Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc.
Keystone Valley Fire Department Serving The Community In January 2013, after approximately three years of meetings and discussions led by a steering committee comprised of municipal officials, local fire company members and representation from the communities at large, the Pomeroy, Parkesburg and Atglen fire companies consolidated. All three companies officially created a new fire department known as the Keystone Valley Fire Department, Chester County Station #8. The members of all three companies met at Station #28 in Parkesburg to have a special membership meeting and to vote on the final bylaws and articles of incorporation. Each company - Pomeroy, Parkesburg and Atglen – had majority votes to conclude the business of its fire company and turned ownership over to the new Keystone Valley Fire Department (KVFD) in the presence of Jill Nagy, esq. The municipalities of Sadsbury Township, West Sadsbury Township, Highland Township and Parkesburg Borough have tirelessly stood behind the development of the new fire department and have become part of a newly formed Fire District. The Fire District is comprised of representation from each municipality served and one representative of the fire department. Currently, the Keystone Valley Fire Department provides fire, EMS and rescue services from the former Atglen, Parkesburg and Pomeroy Fire company’s stations. In March, Martin's Corner Fire Company (MCFC) approached the Keystone Valley Fire Department, along with the Keystone Valley Fire District, regarding a cooperative agreement in the form of a merger. The merger has now been completed. In June, the KVFD board of directors announced the merger and issued the following
statement. “This is just the beginning of a long process and we understand there are operational challenges. However, we welcome Martin's Corner members to the Keystone Valley Fire Department and look forward to having them on our team, working regionally to survive locally.” "The operational officers are currently evaluating the resources acquired in the merger,” added chief Raymond Stackhouse. “New members are being oriented to KVFD and have started participating in training and public events. Response and deployment plans are being developed, reviewed and if services to our neighboring companies are affected, we will notify them once that is identified." Today, Keystone Valley Fire Department provides fire, rescue and ambulance service with over 50 active volunteers, 18 part-time career staff, including a staff supervisor. Staff members are on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week. For further information, interested readers may contact Stackhouse at 610-8573232. More information is also available at www.KVFD8.com or on Facebook at “KVFD Ladder/Rescue 8.”

Parkesburg Group Preserves History The Parkesburg History Group was founded to inform and educate the public about the history of Parkesburg. According to information compiled by the organization, as well as www.parkesburg.org, Parkesburg was once a rural area known as the Fountain Inn in the 1700s. The Fountain Inn building, circa 1734, still stands today as a private residence. It was once used as Parkesburg’s first post office. Parkesburg’s place in history started in the 1830s when the Columbia and Philadelphia Railroad started its westward expansion. It became a center of railroad activity for many years when repair shops were located in the town. Horace A. Beale established the Parkesburg Iron Company in 1872, which helped develop the town through its involvement in the American Industrial Revolution. That industry lasted for 50 years. For more information about the Parkesburg History Group, including meeting times and locations, readers may contact Gerry Treadway at 610-857-3677.
As part of the PAWS for Reading program, children are invited to read to Billy (pictured) at the Parkesburg Free Library to improve their reading skills. Children may register for a 15-minute session on Tuesdays, Aug. 12 or Aug. 26, between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. For more information or to schedule a session, call 610-857-5165.
