Parkesburg Community Day To Offer Family Fun
By Marcella Peyre-Ferry People of all ages will find fun and entertainment at Parkesburg Community Day on Saturday, July 6, starting at 3 p.m. at Minch Park. The event is an annual production of the Parkesburg Area Events Committee. Any proceeds from the event will be distributed to local nonprofit organizations. The afternoon will be filled with plenty to see and do, including a pie-eating contest, a car show and more. There will be music all day, including returning rock band Syde 2 and the Dave Mell Blues Band, as well as a disc jockey and karaoke. There will also be plenty of shopping opportunities from vendors and flea market tables. “We’re looking for vendors; anybody who wants to come and sell can do that,” organizer Kathy Rick said. Vendors will be located along the edges of the park, and they may bring their own pop-up tents. This year, there will be additional children’s games, including a giant Connect Four, a speed pitch, a Boom Blasters race to see who can pop balloons the fastest, the “all-American rat race” game, basketball and more. The Parkesburg Lions Club will offer free eye screenings for children all day. Additionally, visitors are encouraged to visit the car show area and vote for their favorite to win the day’s prize. New this year will be an escape room. For a small fee, groups may sign up
on-site for 20-minute sessions. All other activities will be free. Folks may enjoy a meal or a cool treat from food trucks offering barbecue, hamburgers, hot dogs and frozen ices. A large tent will be available for dining in the shade. “The park is big; we can fit lots of things in there. I’m hoping every year we can add something different,” Rick said. To wrap up the evening, visitors may bring their lawn chairs or blankets to enjoy everyone’s favorite fireworks display at dusk. Anyone who would like to participate as a vendor or reserve a space in the flea market is asked to call Rick in advance at 484-798-3273. Advance registration for the car show is also appreciated, but not necessary. The event will take place rain or shine, with some activities, such as the car show, curtailed if weather is a problem. Minch Park is located along West Street between Second and Fourth avenues. Parking will be available in the municipal lot on West Street, opposite the Parkesburg Library. For more information, readers may contact Rick, search for “Parkesburg Community Day” on Facebook or visit www.parkesburg.org. ■

The newly renovated Keystone Valley Fire Department central station was completed in the fall of 2018 at the cost of nearly $2.7 million. It is a staple within the community and a centerpiece for the redevelopment of the local business district in Parkesburg. Soon it will be followed by the opening of a major fitness chain, Planet Fitness. An integral part of the KVFD renovation project was a partnership with VFW. With the VFW’s assistance, a newly constructed Veterans Memorial Garden was built in the front of the building. This area will commemorate all local veterans who have perished in every major conflict; will contain a 9/11 memorial to recognize the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001; and will recognize local firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty. KVFD was formed in March 2013 with the consolidation of the Parkesburg, Pomeroy and Atglen fire companies. KVFD provides fire, rescue and ambulance service to approximately 23 square miles, serving more than 7,500 residents. For more information, readers may visit www.kvfd8.org. ■

PABA Awards Scholarships, Honors Business Leader
Octorara Junior-Senior High School students Consigilio Roselli (right) and Bianca Cortez recently received $1,000 scholarships from the Parkesburg Area Business Association.
At the Parkesburg Area Business Association (PABA) banquet on May 16, the organization named the Business Leader of the Year, as well as the recipients of its scholarships. The ceremony was held at Gateway Church in Parkesburg. Business Leader of the Year was given to veteran Joe Yurick of JDog Junk Removal, who was honored for putting local veterans to work. According to the award nomination, “Joe comes to all of our events and meetings, always arriving early to lend a hand with setup, and (he is) one of the last to leave, helping with the cleanup. He’s ready to put our veterans to work cleaning up our neighborhood.” PABA noted that local residents may be familiar with JDog Junk Removal trucks that are painted in distinctive camouflage markings. Scholarship recipients, who each received $1,000, were Consigilio Roselli and Bianca Cortez of Octorara Junior-Senior High School. Consigilio is third in his class, has been enrolled in nine business courses at high school and is a member of the FBLA. His nominations stated that Consigilio is “always the first person to offer assistance and take the lead on many projects.” Bianca is a 2019 graduate of Octorara Junior-Senior High School. She was nominated by The Parkesburg Parkesburg Area Business Association POINT youth center for her “dedication, recently presented the Business Leader of leadership skills and her ability to the Year award to Joe Yurick of JDog Junk overcome adversity.” ■ Removal.
